The United States military scrambled fighter jets Sunday to intercept a Russian spy plane flying near Alaska, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said. It was the third time in less than a week that U.S. forces deployed planes after a Russian plane was spotted inside the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone, a section of international airspace just outside of U.S. and Canadian sovereign space that both countries monitor closely.
This kind of Russian activity is not considered a threat and happens regularly in the identification zone, which extends outward from U.S. territory off the coast of Alaska, said NORAD. Although the designated area does not belong to any individual country, aircraft that enter the zone are required to identify themselves to the U.S. and Canada for national security reasons.
NORAD detected and tracked one IL-20 COOT, a Cold War-era reconnaissance aircraft operated by the Russian military, in the Alaskan identification zone Sunday after surveilling the same type of plane flying over the region Wednesday and Thursday.

The Department of Defense has spent months blocking the Ukrainian military from using American and British-made missiles to hit targets deep inside Russia, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing unnamed U.S. officials.
Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Eldridge Colby reportedly designed the procedure to review requests to carry out the long-range strikes with weapons that are either of U.S. origin or that require American intelligence or use components provided by the U.S., according to the WSJ. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reportedly has the final say on whether Ukrainian forces can use the MGM-140 ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) to hit targets in Russia.

Vice President JD Vance said Sunday that Russia has made "significant concessions" in talks to end its war with Ukraine but didn't rule out imposing more sanctions to pressure the Kremlin toward peace.
In an interview aired Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," Vance was asked if Russia is stringing President Donald Trump along, Vance said no and said the Russians have been "flexible" on some of its demands.
"I think the Russians have made significant concessions to President Trump for the first time in 3 1/2 years of this conflict. They've actually been willing to be flexible on some of their core demands. They've talked about what would be necessary to end the war," he said. The Justice Department, FBI, and IRS during the first Trump administration slow-walked, declined to aggressively pursue, or squashed investigations into potential criminal behavior by James Comey, Hillary Clinton and her Clinton Foundation, now Sen. Adam Schiff, Hunter Biden, and other politically-sensitive figures.
A host of declassifications published byΒ Just the News in recent weeks have revealed new details about these investigations by the DOJ, FBI, and IRS β including previously unknown details about how many of these inquiries were delayed or ground to a halt during President Donald Trumpβs first term in office.
Newly-declassified records detail evidence that since-fired FBI Director Comey approved leaking classified information despite his denials to the contrary, including using hisΒ lieutenants and friends to leak to the media.Β
New allegations about how then-Rep. and now-Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., may have leaked classified information to hurt Trump as well also surfaced, as well as new information on how inquiries into the Clinton Foundation wereΒ shut down. The Trump DOJ declined to pursue prosecutions in any of these matters.
