The Chief Data Officer of Social Security, Charles Borges, submitted a resignation letter Friday, just days after he cited alleged policy violations in a whistleblower report that documented the Department of Government Efficiencyβs (DOGE) decision to upload sensitive data to a βvulnerable cloud environment,β according to The Hill.
βRecently, I have been made aware of several projects and incidents which may constitute violations of federal statutes or regulations, involve the potential safety and security of high value data assets in the cloud, possibly provided unauthorized or inappropriate access to agency enterprise data storage solutions, and may involve unauthorized data exchange with other agencies,β Borges wrote in the letter, which was submitted to Social Security Administrator (SSA) Frank Bisignano.
βAs these events evolved, newly installed leadership in IT and executive offices created a culture of panic and dread, with minimal information sharing, frequent discussions on employee termination, and general organizational dysfunction,β he added.

WASHINGTON β Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem fired two dozen Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employees Friday following βmassiveβ cybersecurity failures that compromised government networks and put operations βat risk.β
The ousted employees include FEMA Chief Information Officer Charles Armstrong, Chief Information Security Officer Gregory Edwards and 22 other IT workers at the agency, reps told The Post.
βFEMAβs career IT leadership failed on every level. Their incompetence put the American people at risk,β Noem said in a statement.
βWhen DHS stepped in to fix the problem, entrenched bureaucrats worked to prevent us from solving the problem and downplayed just how bad this breach was.β

The Trump administration on Thursday authorized a major weapons shipment to Ukraine to aid the country in its fight against Russian invasion, intensifying pressure on Moscow to end its war on Kyiv.

Turkey has closed its airspace to Israeli planes in protest at the war in Gaza, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Friday.
βWe have completely cut off our trade with Israel. We do not allow Turkish ships to go to Israeli ports. We do not allow their planes to enter our airspace,β he told a special parliamentary debate on Gaza in Ankara.
Turkey severed direct trade ties with Israel in May last year, demanding a permanent ceasefire and the immediate entry of humanitarian aid to Gaza. In 2023 the two countries carried out $7 billion in trade.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Friday that the funding will be redirected from infrastructure projects that would have supported offshore wind development and instead will be used to boost the maritime industry.

Despite US reports currently circulating, Russian President Vladimir Putin has not ruled out meeting Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky but it should serve as the final stage of meaningful diplomacy beforehand, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

In a press briefing on Friday, Peskov stressed that the Russian president remains open to bilateral talks with Zelensky.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday that Chinese nationals are no longer allowed to be coders on cloud systems at the Department of Defense.
Hegseth said under his leadership in July, an Obama-Biden media legacy program was discovered called "Digital Escorts."
He said that under the program, Microsoft has been able to use Chinese coders remotely supervised by U.S. contractors to support sensitive DOD cloud systems.
