A video posted to social media and enhanced by The Washington Post shows a person running across a roof overlooking the courtyard at Utah Valley University where conservative activist Charlie Kirk had been fatally shot seconds earlier.
Tanner Maxwell, a business school student at the university, was filming the crowd gathered to hear Kirk speak. Across the courtyard was a campus building called the Losee Center. βRight when I hit the camera is when I heard the shot go off,β Maxwell told The Post.
The footage circulated widely Wednesday evening, with a figure on the Losee Center roof barely visible. Zoomed in and stabilized, the footage shows a person who appears to be in dark clothing running for approximately two seconds before going out of frame as the camera pans. The roof is roughly 140 yards from where Kirk had just been shot.
After the shooting, other video footage shows yellow police tape cordoning off the area where the individual was seen running. A small group of police officers is nearby. University spokeswoman Ellen Treanor said late Wednesday that βthe shot came from the direction of the Losee Center.β

According to Steven Crowder, an exclusive leaked ATF internal message details the weapon recovered from the Charlie Kirk shooting: an older Mauser .30-06 rifle with cartridges engraved with transgender and anti-fascist ideology, found along the suspect's escape route.
ATF agents and other law enforcement quickly responded and located the weaponβan older imported Mauser .30-06 caliber bolt-action rifleβwrapped in a towel in a nearby wooded area, consistent with the suspect's route of escape. The rifle had a spent cartridge still chambered, along with three unspent rounds in the top-fed magazine. Notably, all cartridges were engraved with wording expressing transgender and anti-fascist ideology. An emergency trace on the firearm has been initiated, and the ATF's Salt Lake City office is following leads from it. The rifle and ammunition have been handed over to the FBI for DNA and fingerprint analysis; once forensics are complete, the weapon will be disassembled for further importer details.

24 years ago the world changed forever when terrorists brutally attacked the peace and security of America. Itβs a day that fundamentally altered our country. A day that we will remember forever.
But in the wake of so much tragedy, we saw the best of America respond. Law enforcement acted bravely. First responders ran into danger without hesitation. Thousands of men and women from all walks of life banded together to protect and serve their fellow citizens.
Itβs an honor to lead the FBI, where 4,000 special agents and 3,000 professional staff jumped to immediately assist in the work after the attack, deploying from their homes to deliver aid and support first responders in rescue efforts.
As we reflect on that day and remember the lives we lost, including the too many 9/11 related deaths the FBI has had since that horrific day, let us honor those who courageously stood guard, ran toward danger, and put everything on the line defend America in her darkest hour. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

During MSNBCβs coverage of Kirkβs shooting, anchor Katy Tur asked Dowd about βthe environment in which a shooting like this happens.β Dowd responded with the following about Kirk: βHeβs been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that is the environment we are in. You canβt stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And thatβs the unfortunate environment we are in.β

JUST IN: Utah Police release a statement:
This shooting is still an active investigation. The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are co-leading this incident in unison with the Utah County Attorney's office, the Utah County Sheriff's office, and the local police departments.
We initially took in George Zinn as a suspect. He was later released and charged with obstruction by UVU police. A second suspect, Zachariah Qureshi, was taken into custody and released after interrogation with law enforcement. There are no current ties to the shooting with either of these individuals.
There is an ongoing investigation and manhunt for the shooter.
The FBl has created a digital media tip line for information regarding this shooting at fbi.gov/UtahValleyShooting. We ask the public to please provide any information they may have to this tip line.
DPS's State Crime Lab, along with all law enforcement involved, are working multiple active crime scenes. These were identified based on where the victim was shot, as well as the locations where the suspect and victim traveled.
The shooting is believed to be a targeted attack. The shooter is believed to have fired from the roof of a building down to the location of the public event in the student courtyard. Any additional clarifications cannot be provided to protect the integrity of our investigation.
To secure the event, UVU PD had six officers working the event. These security measures were in addition to Charlie Kirk's security detail, who travels with him. Approximately 3,000 people attended. The location of the event was held in the university quad, an outdoor bowl courtyard on campus for events.

continued... Charlie Kirk was a true friend. The kind of guy you could say something to and know it would always stay with him. I am on more than a few group chats with Charlie and people he introduced me to over the years. We celebrate weddings and babies, bust each other's chops, and mourn the loss of loved ones. We talk about politics and policy and sports and life. These group chats include people at the very highest level of our government. They trusted him, loved him, and knew he'd always have their backs. And because he was a true friend ,you could instinctively trust the people Charlie introduced you to. So much of the success we've had in this administration traces directly to Charlie's ability to organize and convene. He didn't just help us win in 2024, he helped us staff the entire government.
I was in a meeting in the West Wing when those group chats started lighting up with people telling Charlie they were praying for him. And that's how I learned the news that my friend had been shot. I prayed a lot over the next hour, as first good news and then bad trickled in.
God didn't answer those prayers, and that's OK. He had other plans. And now that Charlie is in heaven, I'll ask him to talk to big man directly on behalf of his family, his friends, and the country he loved so dearly.
