California Gov. Gavin Newsom suggested Thursday that he would resign before allowing the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) to pay a fine to the federal government over antisemitism on campus.
Several Ivy League universities have paid fines and penalties, notably Columbia (over $200 million) and Brown ($50 million) in agreements to settle claims that they let antisemitism run rampant on campus.
UCLA was the site of some of the worst antisemitism and violence in the country during the anti-Israel βencampmentβ protests in the spring of 2024. The Trump administration identified UCLA as one of its top ten investigative targets, and pulled $200 million in research funding β later rising to nearly $600 million β from the university last week after finding that it had violated Jewish and Israeli studentsβ civil rights.

A bill signed into law by President Donald Trump last month banning fentanyl analogues would also make a series of changes to current laws that have restricted research into Schedule I drugs like marijuana and psychedelics, congressional analysts say.
In a report published last weekβshortly after Trump gave final approval to the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of (HALT) Fentanyl Actβthe Congressional Research Service (CRS) broke down the various provisions, including its potential impact on studies into currently controlled substances.
While drug policy reform advocates have sounded the alarm about the main thrust of the bill, which is to permanently place analogues of the opioid fentanyl into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), there are components that could help facilitate studies into drugs, including cannabis, psilocybin, MDMA and others.
βSection 3 of the HALT Fentanyl Act contains multiple provisions designed to streamline research with Schedule I controlled substances,β CRS said. βThe section applies generally to Schedule I substances, including but not limited to [fentanyl-related substances, or FRS.]β
