NEW: Months after he refused to charge Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election for using a private, unauthorized server to transmit classified information, then-FBI Director James Comey's inner circle used personal email accounts to further a plan to make an "unauthorized disclosure" to journalists, newly declassified memos reveal.
When investigators in a criminal probe codenamed "TROPIC VORTEX" sought permission in 2019 to gain access to those private emails, federal prosecutors turned them down, according to the memos recently uncovered by current FBI Director Kash Patel and declassified for release to Congress by Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington DC "issued a prosecutorial declination decision for TROPIC VORTEX," the FBI memo shutting down the probe stated.
The memos are the latest evidence that FBI agents on the front lines had serious concerns about illegal leaks and abuses of classified information allegedly involving major figures in Washington like Comey, now Sen. The Federal Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday suspended around 30 employees after those workers wrote to Congress warning that the Trump administration had gutted the nationβs ability to handle hurricanes, floods and other extreme weather disasters.
Of the 182 FEMA employees who signed the letter to Congress, 36 attached their names, while the rest withheld their identities for fear of retaliation.
Those who used their names received emails on Tuesday night saying they had been placed on paid administrative leave βeffective immediately, and continuing until further notice,β according to copies of the emails reviewed by The New York Times.
The emails did not provide a reason for the decision. Representatives for FEMA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

π¨π¨Trump administration pulls additional $175 million from California High-Speed Rail
On Tuesday, the Department of Transportation announced it was withdrawing roughly $175 million previously awarded by President Joe Biden to the California High-Speed Rail Authority.
The federal funds were earmarked for several projects along the high-speed rail route, including multiple grade separations to separate vehicle and train traffic where would intersect, as well as one of the projectβs planned stations in Madera.
In scathing comments released by the Department of Transportation, Secretary Sean Duffy referred to the project as a βboondoggleβ and a waste of the nearly $14 billion already spent on the early design and construction elements.
βJoe Biden and [former DOT Secretary] Pete Buttigieg didnβt care about these failures and dumped hundreds of millions of dollars into the stateβs wish list of related fantasy projects,β Duffy said in a release. βThe waste ends here. As of today, the American people are done investing in Californiaβs failed experiment."
