The United States had not even established air superiority over the Houthis. Instead, what was emerging after 30 days of a stepped-up campaign against the Yemeni group was another expensive but inconclusive American military engagement in the region.

The Houthis shot down several American MQ-9 Reaper drones and continued to fire at naval ships in the Red Sea, including an American aircraft carrier. And the U.S. strikes burned through weapons and munitions at a rate of about $1 billion in the first month alone.

It did not help that two $67 million F/A-18 Super Hornets from America’s flagship aircraft carrier tasked with conducting strikes against the Houthis accidentally tumbled off the carrier into the sea.

By then, Mr. Trump had had enough

The sudden declaration of victory over the Houthis demonstrates how some members of the president’s national security team underestimated a group known for its resilience

In those first 30 days, the Houthis shot down seven American MQ-9 drones (around $30 million each), hampering Central Command’s ability to track and strike the militant group. Several American F-16s and an F-35 fighter jet were nearly struck by Houthi air defenses, making real the possibility of American casualties, multiple U.S. officials said.

That possibility became reality when two pilots and a flight deck crew member were injured in the two episodes involving the F/A-18 Super Hornets, which fell into the Red Sea from the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman within 10 days of each other.

The cost of the operation was staggering. The Pentagon had deployed two aircraft carriers, additional B-2 bombers and fighter jets, as well as Patriot and THAAD air defenses, to the Middle East, officials acknowledged privately. By the end of the first 30 days of the campaign, the cost had exceeded $1 billion, the officials said.

So many precision munitions were being used, especially advanced long-range ones, that some Pentagon contingency planners were growing increasingly concerned about overall stocks and the implications for any situation in which the United States might have to ward off an attempted invasion of Taiwan by China.

And through it all, the Houthis were still shooting at vessels and drones, fortifying their bunkers and moving weapons stockpiles underground.

The intelligence community said that there was “some degradation” of Houthi capability, but argued that the group could easily reconstitute, officials said.

I knew this would be a bust from day 1.

◾“It’s not terrorism. It’s imperialism.” – Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré slammed French media for waging an ideological war to sustain colonial domination. Propaganda, he argued, like arms, is part of the Western arsenal—used to manufacture war and justify foreign control.

Traoré points to foreign instructors, drone specialists, and explosives teams in mining zones. “Their objective is to keep us in a state of permanent war, stop development, and continue to exploit our resources.”

The US has not answered Europe whether it is ready to impose sanctions against Russia if Moscow refuses a 30-day truce — Bloomberg

▪️Therefore, European leaders are ready to wait until the talks in Istanbul, as well as a possible meeting between Zelensky and Putin, "before pushing the US to announce new sanctions against Moscow."

▪️The American side wants to provide an opportunity to hold negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on Thursday.

➖"If Putin refuses to meet with Zelensky or Russia does not agree to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire on Thursday, European leaders will call on Trump to impose sanctions on Moscow," the agency writes.

UK and EU sanctions apparently are worthless.

'There will be no deal without Putin's approval' - Witkoff

You were in the same room with Vladimir Putin, you met him face to face. What was he like in person? What kind of meeting was it? What were his demands? What conditions does he put forward to end this conflict?

I spoke to both sides, because how can you be involved in mediation or solution-making if you don't speak to everyone? I spoke to Yermak, Zelensky, Umerov. We had really good, positive discussions. I spoke to all the national security advisers who are involved in the process - from England, France, Germany, Italy, and I spoke to President Putin. There will be no deal without the approval of President Putin. He is the leader of the Russian Federation, so the very idea that talking to President Putin is bad, I don't understand that logic.

Witkoff seems like a capable man.

Rheinmetall and Lockheed-Martin to create joint missile production facility in Europe

On May 8, 2025, German arms company Rheinmetall and American Lockheed Martin officially announced the establishment of a new missile production center in Germany. The two companies "signed a memorandum that envisions the creation of a European center of excellence for the production and distribution of missiles and missile systems, with the aim of strengthening Europe’s security and independence."

"The center of excellence", led by Rheinmetall, will operate primarily in Germany and other European countries.

The companies have already begun identifying the next steps for establishing this center, and the project’s implementation will depend on approval from the U.S. and German governments. Construction of the new factory will begin in June 2025. According to the presented plan, the annual production capacity of the enterprise will be 10,000 missiles. The implementation period and budget of the project are not disclosed, but it is already known that the future enterprise should become the largest in terms of volume and variety of ammunition in Europe, and its creation involves multi-year capital investments in the amount of hundreds of millions of euros.

Rheinmetall has previously partnered with Lockheed Martin on the development of the GMARS multiple rocket artillery system based on Rheinmetall’s HX 8×8 truck, with the system unveiled at the 2024 Eurosatory arms exhibition in Paris. Rheinmetall is also in the process of completing its production facility for F-35 center fuselage sections in Weeze, Germany, with Lockheed Martin saying it expects the Weeze facility to begin building the first of approximately 400 center fuselage sections in July.

“This is a step toward helping our European customers meet their NATO commitments. By combining Rheinmetall’s extensive experience with Lockheed Martin’s advanced missile technologies, we are creating a strong foundation to meet evolving security demands,” Ray Piselli, Vice President of International Affairs at Lockheed Martin, stated.

Translation: the conflict in Ukraine has bled NATO stocks dry and they need to rearm as fast as possible, something that will take them years to accomplish. If it wasn't clear already why they are trying to freeze the conflict, now you know why. It was never about "putting a stop to all the deaths", but about giving the Military Industrial Complex enough time to prolong the grift, and NATO to catch some breath before going at it again.

Slavyangrad cinematic livestream today: "Stalker" (1979 - with English subtitles)

Russian: Сталкер, (Stalker) is a Soviet science fiction film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky with a screenplay written by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, loosely based on their 1972 novel Roadside Picnic. The film tells the story of an expedition led by a figure known as the "Stalker" (Alexander Kaidanovsky), who guides his two clients—a melancholic writer (Anatoly Solonitsyn) and a professor (Nikolai Grinko)—through a hazardous wasteland to a mysterious restricted site known simply as the "Zone", where there supposedly exists a room which grants a person's innermost desires. The film combines elements of science fiction and fantasy with dramatic philosophical, and psychological themes.

Later tonight we may continue with a talking livestream where we can discuss current issues, or just talk about Soviet films, whichever we feel is more rewarding.

Kursk Incursion 2: Electric Boogaloo, sitrep

Clashes between the Russian Army and the AFU are still ongoing along the contact line at Tyoktino, Budki, Bessalovka, and Novy Put.

No significant enemy advances are being recorded as of May the 12th.

According to WorldPravda and TASS, most of the AFU units participating to these incursions seem to be Polish and Estonian "volunteers".

It is unclear what the AFU are hoping to achieve on this front. The Ukrainian logistics are too battered to sustain deep breakthroughs (deep enough to reach Kurchatova at least), and whatever "surprise advantage" the AFU might have had originally is long gone. On the other hand, they are using aviation to drop glide bombs and destroy bridges in this area to either damage the logistics of Russian forces in the area or redirect them elsewhere - a "shaping" operation - which hints at a greater plan being put into motion.

We will keep our eyes on this section of the battlefield in the following days.

The Economist look at staffing levels in Russia’s defence industry to get an indication of Russian production

General Chris Cavoli, NATO’s top commander, recently told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Russia was replacing troops, tanks and munitions “at an unprecedented pace”. Its factories would roll out 1,500 tanks this year, compared with America’s 135. It would produce 3,000 armoured vehicles; America produces no new infantry fighting vehicles. Russia would produce 250,000 shells per month, putting it “on track to build a stockpile three times greater than the United States and Europe combined”.

To understand the scale of Russia’s defence-industrial expansion, The Economist consulted a Western company which uses artificial intelligence to sift through data from a variety of mostly commercially available sources. This shows how the number of electronic devices, such as mobile phones, present at an industrial site has changed over time. The data capture only a fraction of total devices present—perhaps 2% to 10% of the number—but they serve as a proxy for the level of activity. The firm asked to remain anonymous owing to the sensitivity of the topic.

These are not the only signs of Russia’s hyperactive defence industry. The Economist has also seen a range of other indicators. In Biysk, for instance, home to an important plant that produces oleum, which is used in explosives, and a centre of military research, average daily traffic between dormitory areas and districts with chemical plants rose 19% in 2023. “Dwell time”—how long people remain in one place—rose by 32% during periods associated with second and third working shifts.

“In principle, there would seem to be no reason why this mobilised defence effort cannot be maintained for quite a long period of time,” writes Mr Cooper, in a recent study for the RUSI Journal which surveys many of the facilities discussed above. “It is not without irony,” concludes Mr Cooper, “that advanced Western economies may now find the need to look closely at Russia to understand how to adapt.”

Note: Charts show staff activity not output.

Libya is on the brink of civil war: shooting in the capital, tanks on the streets

The reason is the murder of a high-ranking official from the Government of National Accord, Abdul Ghani al-Kikli. The Interior Ministry asks residents not to leave their homes.

The airport has been suspended and civilian aircraft are being urgently evacuated from there.

All emergency departments in Tripoli have been instructed to increase their level of preparedness. A state of emergency has been declared in the city.

There is currently dual power in Libya: in the east of the country, a government approved by parliament operates, while in the capital, a Government of National Unity operates.

The UN-mandated transition period, which ended on June 22, 2023, failed to achieve its main goal – the formation of a popularly elected president and parliament.
