France has completed the Nuclear Deterrence Forces exercise "Operation Poker", which is conducted with varying intensity and at different times throughout the year. This time, the third phase of the exercise took place – simulating a nuclear strike.
The exercise involved at least five Airbus A330 MRTT tanker aircraft, the E-3F "Sentry" AWACS plane, and Rafale B fighters from the Strategic Air Command.
Following the conclusion of the French exercises, final preparations are underway for large-scale nuclear deterrence forces exercises in Northern Europe led by the US Strategic Command.
The exercise will include a group of US Air Force strategic bombers B-2 Spirit, whose flight from Whiteman Air Force Base to Europe was spotted a few hours ago. Also heading north to the continent from Ramstein Air Base in Germany is the airborne nuclear command and communication relay post E-6B "Mercury".

There is a surge in the use of new Lancets on all fronts. The general observation is an increase in the range of use.
I believe this is achieved due to a new type of antenna.
A Chinese cargo ship has visited the Russian-occupied port of Sevastopol in Crimea — making an unprecedented series of stops by a major foreign vessel to one of the Ukrainian ports seized by Russia.
The use of Sevastopol has been barred by western sanctions since 2014, when the Kremlin annexed Crimea. Allies of Kiev have sought to prevent Moscow from exploiting the occupied regions and third parties from treating the territories as part of Russia.
While China has not adopted the western sanctions regime against Russia, its commercial ships have previously avoided Russian-held ports.
The Heng Yang 9 — a Panama-flagged ship owned and operated by the Guangxi Changhai Shipping Company, based in Guangxi — has been spotted docking in Crimea at least three times in the past few months, according to Ukrainian officials.
The visits by the 140m-long container ship follow the opening in April of a new railway into Crimea that, according to Moscow, allows containers to be delivered from Russia on to ships. Russian authorities in August also listed Berdyansk and Mariupol, two other occupied Ukrainian ports, as open to foreign visitors.
During the two-week voyage in the Black Sea in September, the vessel appears to have falsified its tracks, using its transponder to report false positions and disguise its movements. The vessel appears to have sailed to Novorossiysk, a Russian port on the east side of the Black Sea where it was caught on a satellite image on September 6.
Western sanctions pffft… The West makes up 12% of the world.

The State Bureau of Investigation conducted searches at the former head of the Foreign Intelligence Service Valeriy Kondratyuk, reports "ZN" citing a source.
The source said that "the reason for opening the case was urgently sought and found in the procurement of software for OSINT."
According to the publication, the reason for the search is that Valeriy Kondratyuk is considered at Bankova one of the most important communicators of the Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate Kirill Budanov with Western partners and the media.
Recall that, according to sources in political circles, Budanov has a prolonged conflict with Yermak. On this basis, rumors about Budanov's resignation periodically arise.
Also, as sources believe, Budanov may run in the elections after the war ends at the head of his own political force, which may take votes away from Zelensky's party.
According to "ZN" information, two months ago law enforcement officers were also instructed to "start work" regarding generals Mikhail Zabrodsky, Sergey Naev, Nikolay Oleshchuk, Viktor Muzhenko, and Sergey Krivonos. The first two are considered close to the former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces Zaluzhny, who, according to social surveys, is the main potential competitor to Zelensky in the presidential elections.

The EU will impose tariffs on the import of Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia, writes Rzeczpospolita.
According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, this is being done to force countries to seek suppliers outside of Russia, as they remain the only EU countries still financing the Russian Federation. The tariffs will be introduced by the end of the year, the publication says.
Von der Leyen also added that the plan for a phased rejection of energy supplies from Russia by the end of 2027, which the European Commission presented in the summer, was accelerated last week.

The EU may provide Ukraine with a "reparations loan" of up to 130 billion euros, Reuters writes.
The agency reports that the final amount of funding will be determined after assessing Ukraine's needs in 2026-27, which will be conducted by the IMF.
The loan is intended to help Kiev finance defense and should be repaid by Ukraine only when Russia pays reparations under a peace agreement, the publication says.

Iran’s infamous Shahed drones have been used to devastating effect by Russia to strike Ukraine. Now the U.S. and its allies are racing to develop copycat versions of the low-cost, long-range weapon.
For decades, advanced militaries used expensive missiles for precise attacks and cheaper artillery for mass bombardment. The war in Ukraine has shown that drones can be both cheap and precise, with Shaheds costing just tens of thousands of dollars apiece and able to fly more than 1,000 miles, by some estimates.
The Iranian-designed drone has proved particularly effective at overwhelming air defenses. Russia routinely launches scores of Shaheds, which explode on impact, at the same time. Missiles are sometimes fired alongside drone salvos, making it more likely they will evade defenses.
The Ukraine war showed the importance of affordable, long-range drones, and that the West isn’t where it needs to be, said Lt. Gen. André Steur, Royal Netherlands Air Force.
“If you do get into a war, you need deep, deep pockets,” Steur said.
Companies in the US, China, France, the UK and elsewhere are all working on their own unmanned aerial vehicles that seek to emulate the Shahed.
The West, though, is largely behind the curve and faces various challenges including higher costs, analysts say.
But expensive labor and materials are a problem for all Western drone makers.
Anduril sold 291 of its Altius long-range drones to Taiwan last year in a deal that valued the UAVs at more than $1M each, including training and support infrastructure.
By contrast, Russia can produce its version of the much simpler Shaheds for between roughly $35K and $60K apiece, analysts say.
“Mass produced at a fraction of the cost of a cruise missile, it will tire out the enemy’s defense,” said Hugo Coqueret, MBDA.
Russia’s use of the mass-produced drones to exhaust defenses has been “game changing,” said James Patton Rogers, a drone expert at Cornell.
“Cheap, long-range precision saturation strikes are one of the greatest threats to international security,” Rogers said.

“We can fight for years, losing positions slowly,” says one senior official. “But the question is why?” If Ukraine is running out of men, it is also running short on democratic legitimacy. But his rise as a cult hero in the West has encouraged hubris. “Zelensky was more democratic at the start, but all the applause sent him to space,” says another insider. “He began to believe in destiny.” Decisions now flow through a shrinking circle of confidants. Chief among them is Yermak, his chief of staff, a bruiser whose power does not seem warranted by his experience or his mandate as an unelected official. One former minister describes Zelensky and his aide as “alter-egos”, in effect running a joint presidency.
Whoever is in charge, the presidency has sunk into some of Ukraine’s old vices. It has threatened opposition media and their advertisers; unleashed lawfare against political opponents, including Poroshenko; and overseen shakedowns by the domestic-security service. Allegations of ties to Russia are a common tool of extortion. One industrialist tells of a colleague forced to pay $2m to escape such a charge.
Thirdly, war has eroded Ukrainians’ faith in the future, with worrying consequences for the economy. In one primary school in Kyiv’s central Pechersk district, first-year numbers have fallen by two-thirds. The UN estimates that more than 5m people have fled Ukraine. Most will not return, predicts Ella Libanova, a sociologist. Business, already crippled by blackouts and Russian missiles, is suffering from a labour shortage. Many men are fighting or hiding from conscription. Many mothers stay at home, ready to shield children from the next explosion.
EU membership remains elusive, but the Holy Grail... There are more pressing concerns. Russia’s invasion has blown a hole in Ukraine’s fiscal position. The country now survives on foreign life-support, with all the distortions that brings. Tax and domestic borrowing only cover core military spending, about two-thirds of the budget. Even the rosiest forecasts leave a $45bn shortfall next year, almost a quarter of GDP. Western pledges currently fill at most $27.4bn. “We have got to a situation where there is no money,” despairs a senior official. “And Europe alone doesn’t have the money needed to bring us back to life.”

Journalist Pearson Sharp from the American cable news outlet OAN noted on Twitter that he received death threats after he posted about his recent trip to the Donbass:
I’d like to follow up from my last post because the response has been astonishing, if not sadly predictable. Take a look for yourself if you're curious. There's not a SINGLE person asking me for clarification, asking me for proof, asking me why I said these things, or trying to engage in debate.
The entire comment section is just filled with hate and literal death threats. This tells you everything you need to know about the situation.
The difference between me and these... people... is that I went there, I talked to the residents. I'm not paid, I wasn't instructed on who to speak with. Indeed, I went exploring on my own and talked to whoever I wanted. In my entire time in Donbass, I didn't find a single person who said they were Ukrainian. Every single person said they were proudly Russian, and they were grateful to President Putin for "liberating them from Ukraine's terrorism." I am reporting what the people living there told me.
If this threatens or upsets you, perhaps you should go talk to them yourself. Or go to see the schools that were bombed by Ukrainian drones. I saw them myself.
My takeaway is that Russia, and the Russian people do NOT want war. I didn't hear a single person say anything hateful towards Ukraine, or the United States. Not one. No one said they hated Ukraine or the Ukrainian people. They expressed sadness that this war was tearing them apart, and they prayed the war would be over soon so they could be at peace with the people of Ukraine, who they called their brothers.
Contrast that with the comments from the pro-Ukraine crowd in my last post, and look at all the hate you find. I would love to see people from the pro-Ukraine crowd show the same kind of love and compassion the Russian people have show them.
And again, I am not pro-Russia or pro-Ukraine. I'm just a journalist who actually went there and talked to the people who live there. These are their stories, not mine.
Hate me if you want, but that says everything about you, and not me.
The picture is from Azovstal. I am willing to speak with anyone who wants to engage in a reasonable, civil conversation. I will publish a report with my findings soon.

NATO countries should not open fire on Russian aircraft in case of provocations, said French President Macron.
His words are quoted by Le Figaro.
"NATO countries must 'strengthen' their response in case of 'new provocations' from Russia, especially in the airspace of Eastern Europe. This means that if someone provokes you again, you will have to respond a bit more decisively. However, when faced with these tests from the Russian army, we will not open fire," Macron said.
"NATO responded proportionally by strengthening its defensive position," added the French president, then warned that in case of "new provocations with incursions into air or ground space, we will have to strengthen countermeasures."

Trump tells Putin and Zelensky: "It's time to stop the killings," said Vice President Vance.
"The President is increasingly convinced that this war is evil for Russia. You hear me say this constantly, you hear the President say this constantly. War is evil for Russia, it is evil for Ukraine, it is evil for America, we want the killings to stop. This remains the President's position. But the President can also look at the reality on the ground. He sees the economic indicators of Eastern Europe, he sees the number of casualties, both Russian and Ukrainian, in this war, and the President tells Vladimir Putin: it's time to stop the killings. He would say this to Zelensky, in fact, he has said this to Zelensky. He wants this war to end, and he is doing everything possible to stop it," he said.
Vance also said that Trump is irritated by Russia because he does not feel that Moscow is striving to end the war in Ukraine.
