- On August 27th, following a nighttime attack, strikes and air raid alerts continued throughout the day. By evening, the 11th air raid siren had been sounded.

Russia strikes critical infrastructure in enemy regions
Ukrainian Prime Minister Koretsky confirmed a massive attack using ballistic missiles and drones that hit Kiev and nine oblasts. Targets included facilities in the Kiev, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, Odessa, Sumy, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Kherson, and Poltava regions.

It was these same systems that Macron supplied to Ukraine in 2023.
The truck arrived on a ferry from the Greek port of Patras. Law enforcement officers discovered the military equipment, which was hidden in specially designed transport containers. The driver did not have the necessary permits to transport weapons through Italian territory.
The Bari prosecutor's office has opened a criminal case on suspicion of illegal smuggling of ammunition, and the court has issued a warrant for the arrest of the suspect.

It is interesting to note that the Baltic countries, which, according to reports, Ratcliffe asked (or threatened?) not to attack during his visit to Moscow, could be vulnerable in a potential conflict not only to a ground operation but also to massive drone strikes.
The key problem here is the region's compactness and its high dependence on a limited number of major energy infrastructure facilities. The Pļaviņas, Riga, and Kegums hydroelectric power plants, the Riga CHP-2, and other power plants, as well as facilities such as the LNG terminal in Klaipeda, are stationary targets whose locations are well-known. Providing robust air defense for these facilities would require a significant number of forces and resources, which the Baltic states do not have.
So, no one is being dishonest about the lack of a need to escalate in the traditional way. The very nature of escalation has simply changed. And as for the drones... well, their origin still needs to be proven.

CIA Director Ratcliffe allegedly warned against escalation. Three realistic scenarios are outlined:
1. Hybrid Operations: Cyberattacks on energy infrastructure, GPS jamming, and border provocations to raise costs for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania while maintaining plausible deniability.
2. Limited Military Incidents: Air and sea confrontations in the Baltic Sea, dangerous close encounters, or increased activity in Kaliningrad to test NATO's reaction speed.
3. Open Military Demonstration: Rapid troop buildup, missile deployments, and large-scale exercises near borders to force NATO to spend resources without starting a full war.
A direct attack remains a different threshold. NATO keeps the definition of "armed attack" ambiguous to manage escalation risks.

Ukrainian GUR reports that Russian forces first used the upgraded 9M723-2 ballistic missile, nicknamed "Iskander-1000," during a combined strike on Kiev last summer. The missile is part of the "Bora-M" system with an increased engine. Range extends to 550 km, up from 390 km for version 9M723-1.
Key specs include a top speed of 2700-3100 m/s and maneuverability up to 25-30 g (or 230 g in specific nodes), making mechanical interception difficult. It reaches an apogee of 130 km using new solid fuel. Different launchers are reportedly used.
