ANC stalwart and former Minister Naledi Pandor said that it was unacceptable to build an Afrikaans-medium university funded by the community.
Pandor shared her views on the new Akademia University in Pretoria during an interview with the African Renaissance Podcast.
In the interview, she said that the fact that a university intended to be Afrikaans-medium is being built and receiving billions of rands is concerning.
“It is a massive challenge because we are battling centuries of racism and colonialism, and those who have held control do not let go easily.”

🇿🇦 More than 900 arrested during South Africa’s antimigrant protests
South African police have arrested more than 900 people during nationwide antimigrant protests that were mostly peaceful but at times turned violent with shops looted and one person shot dead.
The demonstrations on Tuesday were organised by a coalition of more than 20 civil society groups, including the March and March movement. They were called to mark an unofficial “deadline” for undocumented migrants to leave the country.
Of 120 marches held across South Africa, 108 were peaceful while 12 saw police intervention, Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said at a news conference on Wednesday.
Mosikili stated that reasons for the arrests ranged from public violence and robbery to immigration violations.
The Western Cape recorded the highest volume with 215 arrests, followed closely by the Eastern Cape with 208.
In Johannesburg’s Alexandra township, police confirmed one person was shot dead late on Tuesday during looting of foreign-owned informal corner shops, known locally as spaza shops. Soldiers were also dispatched to Johannesburg’s inner city Hillbrow neighbourhood after a shooting that injured two people, including a 17-year-old.

Solidarity filed a complaint today against Amazon Web Services with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Washington, DC, over its exclusion of businesses with any white ownership from a development programme for South African small businesses.
According to Solidarity, Amazon’s 100% race-based exclusion violates the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct.
“The US government is right to put pressure on South Africa to scrap race laws that impose trade restrictions on American businesses. However, an American giant is using race-based requirements to enforce trade restrictions in South Africa.”

🇿🇦🚔 Four robbers dressed as cops torture Limpopo farmer in horrific attack
Police are searching for four suspects who posed as officers and brutally tortured a farmer during a robbery.
According to a statement from the Limpopo South African Police Service (SAPS), the group attacked after waiting in ambush at the farmer’s home in Morebeng, Capricorn, on Thursday afternoon.
The robbers, dressed in police uniforms and reflective jackets with their faces covered, had reportedly been on the property for three hours before the farmer and two farmworkers returned home.
“The [farmer] became suspicious and tried to run, but one of the suspects allegedly threatened him with a firearm.
”He was then tied up and held at gunpoint while the robbers demanded access to his safe. When he said he did not have one, they assaulted him.
“The suspects allegedly assaulted him with a pick and sjambok [whip] and later cut his fingers with a side cutter in an attempt to force him to reveal the location of the safe key.”
The robbers eventually located the safe and stole five rifles, one pistol, ammunition, an undisclosed amount of cash, a bank card, and four cellphones.
