🏭🇿🇦🇨🇳 South African Factories Crater as China Imports Stunt Revival
South Africa’s manufacturing sector has been in decline for more than three decades. Now, a deluge of cheap Chinese goods, intensified by US President Donald Trump’s tariff war, is putting what remains of its industrial base under renewed pressure.
Chinese exports to South Africa have more than doubled since the start of the decade, rising by almost $10 billion in the first eight months of this year compared with the same period six years ago.
South Africa also runs a large trade deficit with China, which accounts for more than a third of the country’s manufacturing imports and only about 5.9% of exports.
Moody’s Ratings latest Manufacturing Vulnerability Index ranks Africa’s largest economy the most exposed to Chinese trade competition of the eight nations it assessed on the continent.
It attributed this to South Africa’s “relatively large manufacturing sector with a high reliance on foreign, and specifically Chinese, value added in exports” and moderate and declining competitiveness.

🇩🇪🇿🇦 German defence giant plans South African production line for drone bomb with 15 km range
Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) CEO Maximilian Froch has said the production line for the locally developed LongClaw glide bomb will start up in the second half of next year.
Development of the LongClaw began early last year, and a mock-up was shown on the RDM stand at the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) 2026 exhibition at Air Force Base Waterkloof last month. Froch told DefenceWeb at the show that while the production line will only start up in the second half of next year, small quantities of the LongClaw are already being assembled manually. Over the past few months, the weapon has undergone evaluation on a number of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms.
While the LongClaw can be launched from manned aircraft, the target market for the bomb is the UAV market. One of the reasons for targeting the UAV market is that the qualification process for such munitions on these platforms is usually far faster than that for a manned aircraft. RDM stresses that mounting and integration of the weapon on UAVs is designed to be straightforward.

South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) issued a formal diplomatic protest against United States Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III.
The action was triggered by a series of scathing media interviews and an op-ed published by Bozell. In these statements, he lambasted the South African government, declaring that Washington was "shocked" by President Cyril Ramaphosa's failure to meaningfully address a list of policy demands.
This marks the second time Bozell has been démarched by Pretoria since assuming office in February 2026. He was previously reprimanded in March 2026 for saying that the genocidal chant of "Kill the Boer" is hate speech regardless of what the South African courts decide.

🇿🇦👨🌾 The farm murder phenomenon explained
Finally, last year, under the intense spotlight focused on the issue by the Trump administration, there were 30 farm murders recorded, the lowest number in 26 years. To put that number in perspective, that is still ten times the number of people killed in residential robberies in England and Wales in 2024. It is three times the total number of people killed in all robbery murders in Germany in that same year.
To understand the emergence of the phenomenon, it’s important to go back to the farm murder index case. In the revolutionary ferment of the mid-1980s in South Africa, there was, in fact, a major ANC campaign – directed from exile – to clear the white farmers off the land.
This essentially took three forms: The first was generalised incitement, exhortations to the people “to rise up and seize the land!”, and so on. The second was a landmine warfare campaign, which was also meant to involve an assassination component. And the third was to infiltrate guerrillas from their camps in Angola into South Africa, to link up with the paramilitary bands of youth who had made the townships ungovernable, and to give them training and direction for attacks on targets in the white areas.
Indeed, guerrillas were sent on special short courses, ahead of their deployments, in how to provide such on-the-spot training once back in South Africa. This was how the first farm murders of this particular type were instigated in mid-1985, and also how the “Kill the Boer” chant – which actually originates from the Rhodesian Bush War of the 1970s – was injected into South Africa during the tumult of that era. It’s important to note as well that it was part of MK doctrine at the time that once in South Africa its guerrillas could use robbery to secure weapons and operational funds in so-called “repossession operations.” Furthermore, a common ANC/MK call to action at the time was for the youth to go into the homes, the businesses, and the farmsteads of the enemy and seize the weapons that were allegedly contained therein.

But they need help. Our ask was for the South African government to designate rural crime a priority and back up their words with resources. AfriForum asked for support from the South African government – and the United States offered to help financially. This was ignored.
President Trump has been clear, this does not bode well for U.S.-South Africa relations.

The victim was trying to take photos of the vehicles for insurance purposes when the occupants of the other vehicle allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot him in the back as he tried to flee.

A US judge has rejected South African telecoms giant MTN’s bid to revisit earlier rulings in a major anti-terrorism lawsuit and refused to allow an appeal, clearing the way for the case to move into discovery.
The case was brought by American servicemembers and civilians injured in terrorist attacks, as well as relatives of some of those killed or wounded.
They have accused the South African company of knowingly providing assistance to terrorist groups responsible for attacks on Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan.
MTN has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and says it did not play a role in the attacks.
The plaintiffs first sued MTN in 2021 under the US Anti-Terrorism Act, seeking unspecified damages for deaths and injuries caused in the attacks. MTN is today facing a total of five similar lawsuits in US federal courts.

🇿🇦🕊 The White man executed point-blank yesterday was renowned racing driver Robert Wolk
Motorsport South Africa is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Robert Wolk.
Robert was a hugely respected figure in South African motorsport, with a career spanning almost three decades and success across karting, single-seaters, touring cars and other forms of circuit racing.
His list of achievements is extensive, including SA Junior GP Karting Championship titles in 1995 and 1997, multiple Formula Ford championships, the 2013 SA Formula Volkswagen Championship, the 2015 SA Formula 1600 Championship, the 2021 and 2022 SA GTC Championships and the 2024 SA Touring Cars Championship.
He was awarded South African Junior Protea Colours in 1998 and later received his Senior Protea Colours in 2022.
Robert continued to add to that remarkable career in 2026. In May, he won his second Simola Hillclimb King of the Hill title, and in June he returned to South African Touring Cars with a victory at Aldo Scribante.
Robert’s passion for racing remained clear right to the end. He was still competing at national level and was due to race at Killarney this weekend.
His passing leaves a profound void in South African motorsport. Robert will be remembered not only for the championships and victories he achieved, but for the passion, commitment and sportsmanship he brought to the sport throughout his career.
Our thoughts are with Robert’s family, friends, team members, colleagues and everyone across the motorsport community who knew him.
Rest in peace, Robert Wolk.

Solidarity filed a complaint today against Amazon Web Services with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Washington, DC, over its exclusion of businesses with any white ownership from a development programme for South African small businesses.
According to Solidarity, Amazon’s 100% race-based exclusion violates the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct.
