🇿🇦🇺🇸 Roelf Meyer wants to stop President Donald Trump’s Afrikaans refugee programme
Roelf Meyer, South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States, said he is working hard to get President Donald Trump’s executive order on South African refugees lifted.
He shared this information during the Clement Manyathela Show on Radio 702, where he discussed his work in the United States.
“The executive order issued by President Donald Trump in February 2025 still stands, and we have to find a way to get around it or at least try to get it revoked,” Meyer said.

Sanctions against South Africa would harm everyone in the country. For this reason, we visited Washington last year in an effort to help prevent these measures in the interest of the country.
Our proposals will promote progress that benefits everyone in South Africa, while also ensuring that important issues such as the threat to property rights, rural safety, other issues of contention, and several other challenges that specifically affect Afrikaners and other minorities receive the attention they deserve.

🇿🇦 SA braces for anti-immigrant shutdown on 30 June
Determined to avoid a repeat of the July 2021 riots that claimed 350 lives and caused damage estimated at R50 billion, government says it is better prepared for the planned protests on Tuesday led by anti-immigrant groups like March and March, which has issued an ultimatum for illegal immigrants to leave the country by 30 June.
This has alarmed several key African allies and prompted voluntary repatriation efforts by Malawi, Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda, with several other countries issuing travel advisories for those planning to visit SA.
All police leave has been cancelled for 30 June and the army is on call to protect critical infrastructure.
Private security companies are also on high alert. There are fears that supposedly peaceful protests could turn violent, as they have done in the past.

🇿🇦🌍 South African firms face pressure due to anti-immigrant protests
South African companies with operations across Africa are facing mounting pressure as anti-immigrant protests in the continent’s largest economy trigger diplomatic tensions and calls for action against their businesses.
Mobile-phone operator MTN has dispatched a senior executive to meet officials in Ghana and is supporting Nigerians repatriated from South Africa, while Standard Bank Group, the continent’s biggest lender, says it is closely monitoring developments.
Gold Fields, which operates the Tarkwa gold mine in Ghana, is navigating a tougher policy environment as authorities push for greater local participation in the mining sector and now risks coming under further political pressure.
More than 2 700 people from Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique and Malawi have been assisted to return home from South Africa amid fears that anti-immigrant demonstrations could escalate, with a number having already been attacked and had their homes or businesses looted. Meanwhile, 7 400 undocumented migrants have been arrested for contravening immigration laws over the past month, bringing the number detained so far this year to more than 40 000, according to the home affairs ministry.
🇬🇭 The dispute has intensified in recent days, with Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa calling on the African Union to debate the treatment of African migrants in South Africa.
🇳🇬 In Nigeria, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu indicated that the government is considering possible measures against South Africa following the repatriation of Nigerian citizens.
The risk is particularly acute for South African firms whose growth depends on operations beyond their home market. MTN’s Nigerian business is its largest, Standard Bank is present in more than a dozen African countries and Gold Fields’ Tarkwa mine in Ghana ranks among its most important assets.

🇿🇦 Trio found guilty of 2018 brutal murder of celebrated British botanists in KZN forest
Three Muslims, Sayfudeen Aslam Del Vecchio , his wife Fatima Patel, and their former Malawian boarder, Ahmad ‘Bazooka’ Mussa were found guilty for brutally murdering two world renowned British botanists, Rodney and Rachel Saunders, in the Drakensberg mountains in 2018.
The couple was killed shortly after being interviewed for an episode of BBC Gardeners' World and pictures of them with presenter Nick Bailey are said to be the last photographs taken of the couple.
The Saunders' bodies were thrown into the crocodile-infested Tugela River. Due to severe decomposition, it took three forensic experts to identify them and their injuries.
Aslam Del Vecchio and Fatima Patel were on the radar of KZN authorities since late 2016 with alleged links to the Islamic State.
Sentencing will take place on the 19th of June.

🇿🇦🏛🇺🇸Legal bid launched to stop SA arms exports to the US
The South African government has been accused of breaking its own laws and violating its obligations under the National Conventional Arms Control Act, by selling arms to the US in the face of “overwhelming evidence of its aggression and systematic international law violations”.
In an application to the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Pretoria, on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, the Southern Africa Litigation Centre is seeking the suspension of permits that were granted by the National Conventional Arms Control Committee authorising the export of arms to the US.
“By authorising the transfer of arms to the US, which is likely to have acted in violation of international humanitarian law and the Genocide Convention, and also to have committed international war crimes, SA may well have aided or assisted in the commission of an internationally wrongful act. This is because the National Conventional Arms Control Committee authorised transfers of arms to the US ‘with knowledge of the circumstances of the internationally wrongful act’.

🇿🇦 More than 900 arrested during South Africa’s antimigrant protests
South African police have arrested more than 900 people during nationwide antimigrant protests that were mostly peaceful but at times turned violent with shops looted and one person shot dead.
The demonstrations on Tuesday were organised by a coalition of more than 20 civil society groups, including the March and March movement. They were called to mark an unofficial “deadline” for undocumented migrants to leave the country.
Of 120 marches held across South Africa, 108 were peaceful while 12 saw police intervention, Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said at a news conference on Wednesday.
Mosikili stated that reasons for the arrests ranged from public violence and robbery to immigration violations.
The Western Cape recorded the highest volume with 215 arrests, followed closely by the Eastern Cape with 208.
In Johannesburg’s Alexandra township, police confirmed one person was shot dead late on Tuesday during looting of foreign-owned informal corner shops, known locally as spaza shops. Soldiers were also dispatched to Johannesburg’s inner city Hillbrow neighbourhood after a shooting that injured two people, including a 17-year-old.

▫️have senior governor officials unequivocally, condemn all race based incitement to violence, including the “kill the Boer” song more frequently.
▫️prevent the implementation of measures that would allow expropriation without fair compensation and due process under the Expropriation act of 2024.
▫️designate rural crime, a “priority crime,” and increases resources dedicated to high crime, rural areas.
▫️and refrain from actions that would significantly interfere with the implementation of the refugee program within the confines of South African law.

🇿🇦 JUST IN: Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen has been fired by Ramaphosa
Newly elected leader of the liberal Democratic Alliance, Geordin Hill-Lewis, has asked President Ramaphosa to remove Steenhuisen from his cabinet.
Steenhuisen, who was the leader of the DA until April, was involved in a disastrous attempt to curb the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak — see coverage of the legal battles against his department here. Recently, his chief of staff was exposed in a leaked email describing farmers' plea for help as amusing.
It is expected that Willie Aucamp, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, will take over as Minister of Agriculture.

"South Africa has failed to impose and effectively enforce a forced labor import prohibition. In section IV, we found that the failure to impose and effectively enforce a forced labor import prohibition is unreasonable. In section V, we found that the failure to impose and effectively enforce a forced labor import prohibition burdens or restricts U.S. commerce.
Some comments suggest that South Africa’s existing labor laws, anti-trafficking laws, and customs laws provide a legal framework for South Africa to prohibit the importation of goods produced with forced labor. A legal framework that could provide a basis for a forced labor import prohibition, however, is distinct from a measure that forbids legally the importation of goods produced with forced labor.
For the foregoing reasons, the results of this investigation indicate that the acts, policies and practices of South Africa related to the failure to impose and effectively enforce a forced labor import prohibition are unreasonable and burden or restrict U.S. commerce."
📝 The US is proposing to impose an additional 12.5% tariff (duty) on virtually all products imported from South Africa as a responsive action under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

It commemorates the Bittereinders during the final phase of the Second Boer War of Independence (1899–1902) who refused to surrender and fought to the “bitter end” for their independence, even when military victory seemed impossible.
Today we remember their perseverance until the end of the war with the signing of the Peace of Vereeniging (May 31, 1902). We also remember later Afrikaner milestones such as the Republic Day on May 31, 1961. May the bravery of the Bittereinders live on in our descendants."
