This jump was led by a +7.5% MoM increase in capital goods, which include computers and accessories, semiconductors, and telecommunications equipment fueling the AI buildout.

Now, the capital goods deficit has widened by -$54.3 billion YoY, accounting for more than the entire increase in the overall trade deficit.

BREAKING: The US personal savings rate fell -0.2 percentage points in September, to 4.2%, its lowest level since October 2022.

Since January 2024, this metric has declined -3.4 percentage points.

The personal savings rate is now well below the 5-year pre-pandemic average of 6.2%.

This comes as personal income grew +4.1% YoY in September, its 2nd-lowest growth rate since April 2022.

At the same time, personal consumption expenditures rose +6.3% YoY, the 2nd-highest YoY growth since December 2024.

In other words, consumer spending continues to outpace income growth, putting further pressure on household savings and increasing household reliance on borrowing.

Elevated inflation and record prices are putting further pressure on consumer savings.

Americans have never been this pessimistic about their finances:

A record 41% of US consumers expect their financial situation to be worse over the next 12 months.

This figure has more than tripled since Q2 2024.

By comparison, during the 2008 Financial Crisis, this metric peaked at 23%.

This proportion is also significantly higher than in the 1970s and the 1980s, when CPI inflation was above 10%.

Furthermore, 31% of US consumers believe their personal financial situation will be worse in 5 years, double the proportion seen in the 1980s.

On days like today, it's important to zoom out.

No, the AI Revolution is not "over," and the market is not "going to zero."

In fact, the Nasdaq 100 is up +11% YTD and nearly +70% since its April 2025 low.

Meanwhile, the S&P 500 is currently set to post a blended earnings +30.2% growth rate for Q3 2026.

This puts us on track for the third-straight quarter of earnings growth above 25%.

And, even after the biggest hack in crypto history, Bitcoin is down less than -5% this week.

Disruptive technologies like AI will inevitably bring heightened volatility, polarized positioning, and extreme swings in market sentiment.

However, do not let short-term volatility overshadow the broader picture.

We are in the midst of the biggest technological revolution in history.

Technical corrections are healthy, necessary, and an inevitable part of every bull market.

Do not lose sight of the bigger picture.

The timing of today's market crash is noteworthy.

As selling pressure spreads, the Nasdaq 100 is now down nearly -5% on the day.

Meanwhile, the market-implied odds of a Democrat "sweep" in the Midterms next week has surged from 65% to 72% today, a record high.

That's +7 percentage points in 2 days amid this market downturn.

We have yet to receive a comment from the Trump Administration regarding the current situation in the market.

However, what is clear is that the timing of today's market crash will be consequential.

And, even as technology stocks drop sharply, US Treasury Yields are barely seeing any relief.

This leaves us with high rates, a falling stock market, $100+ oil prices, and rising CPI, PPI, and PCE inflation.

Next week is going to be interesting, to say the least.

The global copper market is extremely tight:

China's copper import premium over London Metal Exchange (LME) prices has surpassed $200 per ton, the largest premium on record.

The Yangshan premium, named after a Shanghai port that serves as a major hub for Chinese copper imports, has more than doubled over the last 3 months.

Since the beginning of 2026, this figure has surged +700%.

Furthermore, the premium of spot prices over three-month futures on the LME widened to $217 per ton, the largest since mid-August.

This has been driven by strong Chinese copper demand and domestic inventories falling below typical seasonal levels.

At the same time, expectations of potential US tariffs on refined copper have redirected hundreds of thousands of tons of copper to the US, leaving global inventories heavily concentrated in the country.

The physical copper supply squeeze is far from over.
