According to the The Washington Post, the U.S. military has lost at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones in the war with Iran, which is approximately 25% of the total fleet in the United States. This information was provided to the publication by three U.S. officials familiar with the situation.
The potential cost of these losses to U.S. taxpayers for this weapons system alone exceeds $1.3 billion. Before the conflict began, the United States had approximately 185 Reaper drones in its inventory.
The loss of Reaper drones is just one part of a more serious problem with the U.S. arsenal. The publication notes that the war with Iran, combined with years of arms shipments to Ukraine, has led to depletion of various ammunition supplies and is already limiting Trump's capabilities in the military sphere.
To cover the costs of the war and replenish supplies, the U.S. administration is requesting an additional $67 billion from Congress.
"Even if they are ordered today, deliveries will only begin after President Trump leaves office," said Todd Harrison, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.
