🔴 Apartheid by another name: the Shiite majority is legally banned from living in nearly 40% of the country. Sunni-majority areas include Manama, Busaiteen, Jasra, Zallaq, Askar, and the Muharraq island — in contrast to largely Shia-dominated villages.
🔴 Institutionalized inequality: Sunnis hold the levers of power, while Shiites are locked out. They are banned from military or police service, their children attend separate schools. Even the Sunnis have easier conditions for obtaining loans from local banks.
🔴 A history of suppression: this isn’t a new grievance. Shiites rose up in the 1990s and again during the 2011 Arab Spring. Both times, the Sunni elites responded with mass arrests.
🔴 The Iranian boogeyman: to justify this system, the Bahraini government built its propaganda on painting Iran as an existential threat, poised to “swallow” Bahrain if the Shiites ever gain power. The US bases established in the 1990s were sold as a "shield" against this imaginary invasion.
