THE ORDER TO FAST

ALLĀH said:

O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become pious.

In an address to the believers of this Ummah, ALLĀH ordered them to fast, that is, to abstain from food, drink and sexual activity with the intention of doing so sincerely for ALLĀH the Exalted alone. This is because fasting purifies the souls and cleanses them from the evil that might mix with them and their ill behavior.

ALLĀH mentioned that HE has ordained fasting for Muslims just as HE ordained it for those before them, they being an example for them in that, so they should vigorously perform this obligation more obediently than the previous nations.

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

ALLĀH tells us of the wisdom behind the prescription of fasting, as HE says "that you may become pious".

Fasting is one of the greatest means of developing piety, because it involves obeying the command of ALLĀH and avoiding that which HE has forbidden.

Part of the piety that fasting involves is that the fasting person refrains from that which ALLĀH has forbidden to him of food, drink, intercourse and so on, to which he is naturally inclined, seeking thereby to draw closer to ALLĀH, hoping for HIS reward by giving up these things. This is part of piety. Piety also includes the following:

• The fasting person trains himself to remember that ALLĀH is always watching, so he gives up things that he desires even though they may be available to him, because he knows that ALLĀH is watching him.

• Fasting narrows the pathways of the Shaytan, who flows through the son of Adam like blood. Fasting weakens the Shaytan’s influence and reduces sins.

• The fasting person usually does many acts of worship and obedience, which are characteristics of piety.

• By fasting, the rich man feels the pain of hunger, which makes him inclined to help the poor and destitute. This is also a characteristic of piety.

REWARD FOR PRAYING TARAWĪH WITH THE IMAM UNTIL HE FINISHES

Abu Hurayrah said: "ALLĀH’s Messenger ﷺ used to encourage the people to stand ˹for salah at night˺ during Ramadān, without sternly ordering them. He would say:

'Whoever stands ˹in salah in the nights of˺ Ramadān out of faith and expecting the reward from ALLĀH, he will be forgiven for what has preceded of his sins.'" {Muslim #759}

Therefore, it is essential for the Muslim to be diligent in praying tarawīh with the Imam, to not neglect any part of it, and to not turn away before his Imam - even if the Imam prayed more than eleven or thirteen raka'at - due to the saying of the Prophet (ﷺ):

"Whoever stands ˹in salah˺ with the Imam until he turns away, will have written for him the standing ˹in salah˺ for a whole night." {Abū Dawūd #1375}

The meaning of the turning away of the Imam is: the end of salah and not the leaving of the first Imam - if it is prayed by more than one Imam.

Our master Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah on Monday, the twelfth of Rabi' al-Awwal. He was the son of Abdullāh and Aminah al-Qurashiyyah. He is the last of the prophets and the messenger of ALLĀH, sent to all people to call them to worship ALLĀH alone and not associate anything with HIM. His father had passed away before his birth and was buried in Madinah, so he was raised by his mother. He ﷺ was breastfed after his mother by Thuwaybah al-Aslamiyyah, then Halimah al-Sa'diyyah. When he was six years old, his mother passed away, and he was taken care of by his foster mother, Umm Ayman. Thereafter, his grandfather took care of him. When he was eight years old, his grandfather passed away, so his uncle Abu Talib took care of him.

At the age of nine, he travelled with his uncle Abu Talib to Syria, where Bahīrā the monk recognized him. At the age of twenty-five, he travelled in trade for Sayyidah Khadijah, and two months after his return, he married her when she was forty years old.

At the age of thirty-five, he participated with the Quraysh in rebuilding the Kaaba and arbitrated among them in placing the Black Stone in its place. He became well-known among his people for his praiseworthy qualities, and they loved and respected him, so they called him "Al-Amīn" (the trustworthy one). ALLĀH protected him from the deeds of ignorance, and he preferred solitude as he approached forty years old. He used to worship in the cave of Hira, following the religion of his grandfather Ibrahim.

However, the best spending is the one for family and it has more reward, hence when you feed your family then that is the best of Islam."

THE BLESSINGS OF ALLĀH ARE COUNTLESS

ALLĀH said

And if you count the Blessings of ALLĀH, never will you be able to count them.

let alone give thanks for them all.

Verily man is highly unjust, exceedingly ungrateful

That is, this is the nature of man with regard to the fact that he is a wrongdoer and sinner, who falls short in his duty towards his Lord and is ungrateful for the blessings of ALLĀH; he does not give thanks for them or acknowledge them, except those whom ALLĀH guides, so they give thanks for HIS blessings, acknowledge the rights of their Lord and fulfil those rights.

These blessings highlight various types of the many blessings that ALLĀH bestows upon HIS slaves, some in general terms and some in specific terms, because of which ALLĀH calls HIS slaves to give thanks to HIM and remember HIM. HE urges them to do so and encourages them to ask of HIM and call upon HIM during the hours of the night and day, just as HIS blessings are repeatedly bestowed upon them at all times.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

In Sahih Al-Bukhari it is recorded that the Messenger of ALLĀH used to supplicate;

"O ALLĀH! All praise is due to YOU, without being able to sufficiently thank YOU, nor ever wish to be cutoff from YOU, nor ever feeling rich from relying on YOU; our Lord!"

It was reported that Prophet Dawud, peace be upon him, used to say in his supplication,

"O Lord! How can I ever duly thank YOU, when my thanking YOU is also a favor from YOU to me"

ALLĀH the Exalted answered him, "Now, you have thanked ME sufficiently, O Dawud,"

meaning, 'when you admitted that you will never be able to duly thank ME.'

And those who have believed and done righteous deeds -  WE will certainly house them in ˹elevated˺ mansions in Paradise, under which rivers flow, to stay there forever. Excellent is the reward of the ˹righteous˺ workers.

Those who have been patient and upon their Lord rely.

ETIQUETTE OF DEALING WITH DREAMS

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported:

I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, "When one of you sees a dream that he likes, then it is from ALLĀH he should praise ALLĀH for it and relate it to (others).''

Another narration adds: Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, "He should not report it except to those whom he loves. And if he sees one which he dislikes, then it is from the Satan. He should seek refuge in ALLĀH against its evil and should not mention it to anyone. Then it will not harm him.'' {Al-Bukhari and Muslim}

📖 Riyādhus-Saliḥīn: Book 5, Chapter 130, Hadith 841

Hafiz Salahudeen Yusuf said: "These are clear instructions from Messenger of ALLĀH about both good and bad dreams. A good dream means a good news sent by ALLĀH to a person who has seen it. It should be related only to those who are close to his heart and not to such people who may start nourishing malice against him like the brothers of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph). A bad dream should be attributed to Satan and not be described to others because it often causes one to be pessimistic and it may be taken as a bad omen, which is not allowed in Islam. Rather, a man should seek ALLĀH'S Refuge against its evil. And if he puts faith in ALLĀH, no harm will come to him." {Sharḥ Riyādhus-Saliḥīn}

GUIDANCE FROM THE HADITHS:

1⃣. A bad dream, in which a person sees unpleasant and disturbing things, comes from Satan. A good dream, on the other hand, is glad tidings to the believer, and it comes from ALLĀH Almighty.

2⃣ . A bad dream does not harm a person if he does certain things: spitting dryly three times to his left side, seeking refuge with ALLĀH three times from the evil of Satan and the evil of what he has seen in the dream, and turning to the other side. Moreover, if he feels active, he can get up, perform ablution, and pray. He should not relate the dream to anyone or try to interpret it. Whoever does these things will not be harmed by such dreams, ALLĀH Willing.

"Certainly, celebrating the fifteenth night of Sha'bān by performing supererogatory prayers or other acts of worship, and singling out its day with fast is a despicable innovation, as viewed by the majority of the people of knowledge.

There is no basis for it in the pure Shari'ah, rather, it is from that which arose in Islaam after the era of the Companions (may ALLĀH be pleased with them)."

📖 Hukm al-Ihtifal bi Laylat al-Nisf min Sha’bān

He (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) also said:

"There is no sahih hadith concerning the night of the fifteenth of Sha'ban (Laylat al-Nisf min Sha’ban). All the ahadith that have been narrated concerning that are mawdu’ (fabricated) and da’if (weak), and have no basis. There is nothing special about this night, and no recitation of Quran or prayer, whether alone or in congregation, is specified for this night. What some of the scholars have said about it being special is a weak opinion. It is not permissible to single it out for any special actions. This is the correct view. And ALLĀH is the Source of strength."

VIRTUE OF SINCERE REPENTANCE

ALLĀH says,

And those who do not invoke with ALLĀH another deity or kill the soul which ALLĀH has forbidden, except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse - and whoever does this shall receive the punishment.

The torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace;

Except those who repent and believe, and do righteous deeds;

means, those who do these evil deeds will be punished in the manner described,

Except those who repent,

that is; those who repent in this world to ALLĀH from all of those deeds, for then ALLĀH will accept their repentance. This is evidence that the repentance of the murderer is acceptable, and there is no contradiction between this and the Ayah in Surah An-Nisa':

وَمَن يَقْتُلْ مُوْمِناً مُّتَعَمِّداً
And whoever kills a believer intentionally,
(4:93)

because even though this was revealed in Al-Madinah, the meaning is general, and it could be interpreted to refer to one who does not repent, because this Ayah states that forgiveness is only for those who repent.

Moreover ALLĀH says:

Verily, ALLĀH forgives not that partners should be set up with Him, but He forgives except that to whom He wills.
(4:48)

And in the authentic Sunnah, it is reported from the Messenger of ALLĀH that the repentance of a murderer is acceptable, as was stated in the story of the person who killed one hundred men and then repented, and ALLĀH accepted his repentance, and other Hadiths.

for those, ALLĀH will change their sins into good deeds, and ALLĀH is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Dharr, may ALLĀH be pleased with him, said, "The Messenger of ALLĀH said: "I know the last person who will be brought forth from Hell, and the last person who will enter Paradise. A man will be brought and it will be said,

"Take away his major sins and ask him about his minor sins."

So it will be said to him: "On such and such a day, you did such and such, and on such and such a day, you did such and such."

He will say, "Yes, and he will not be able to deny anything."

Then it will be said to him: "For every evil deed you now have one good merit."

He will say:"O Lord, I did things that I do not see here."

He (Abu Dharr) said:

"And the Messenger of ALLĀH smiled so broadly that his molars could be seen."

Muslim recorded it.

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Abu Jabir heard Makhul say,

"A very old man with sunken eyes came and said, 'O Messenger of ALLĀH, a man betrayed others and did immoral deeds, and there was no evil deed which he did not do. If (his sins) were to be distributed among the whole of mankind, they would all be doomed. Is there any repentance for him?"

The Messenger of ALLĀH said: "Have you become Muslim?"

He said, "As for me, I bear witness that there is no God but ALLĀH Alone, with no partner or associate, and that Muhammad is HIS servant and Messenger."

The Prophet said: "ALLĀH will forgive you for whatever you have done like that, and will replace your evil deeds with good merits."

The man said: "O Messenger of ALLĀH, even my betrayals and immoral actions?"

The Prophet said: "Even your betrayals and immoral actions."

"The man went away saying 'Lā ilaha illallāh' and 'Allāhu Akbar."'

ALLĀH tells us how HIS mercy extends to all His creatures, and that whoever among them repents to HIM, HE will accept his repentance for any sin, great or small.

ALLĀH ALONE IS THE BESTOWER OF GUIDANCE

ALLĀH says,

It is Sunnah to recite the following Du'a when walking to the mosque from home:

"O ALLĀH, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light and in my sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and to my right light, and to my left light, and before me light and behind me light. Place in my soul light. Magnify for me light, and amplify for me light. Make for me light and make me a light. IF THE DEVILS ARE CHAINED UP, WHY DO WE SEE EVILS AND SINS HAPPENING IN RAMADĀN?

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said: "When Ramadān begins, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in chains." {Al-Bukhārī #3277 and Muslim #1079}

"When the first night of Ramadān comes, the devils and mischievous jinn are chained up, and the gates of Hell are closed, and none of its gates are opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and none of its gates are closed…" {At-Tirmidhi #682 and Ibn Majah #1642}

Shaykh Taqiy ad-Din Ibrahim ibn Muflih (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The devils are put in chains and shackled in Ramadān, according to the apparent meaning of the hadith. Or it may be that what is meant is the mischievous devils, as was stated by Abu Hatim and other scholars. That does not mean that no evil is committed at all; rather evil is reduced, because they are weakened. Imam Ahmad also interpreted this according to the apparent meaning. ‘Abdullah ibn al-Imam Ahmad said: 'I said to my father: We sometimes see the majnun (person who is possessed by jinn) having fits during the month of Ramadān.'

He said: 'This is what the hadith says, and there is no need to argue about it.'" {Masaib al-Insan min Makaid ash-Shaytan || Page 144}

Imam Abul-'Abbas al-Qurtubi (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "If it is said, we often see evils and sins happening in Ramadān; if the devils were chained up no evil would happen.

This may be answered from several angles:

1️⃣. They are only shackled and restrained from those who observe the fast, fulfilling the necessary conditions and adhering to the appropriate etiquette. As for those who do not observe the fast in the proper manner, the Shaytān is not restrained from them.

2️⃣. If we assume that they are chained up and kept away from every person who fasts, that does not necessarily mean that all the devils are chained up and no evil will happen, because there are other causes for the occurrence of evil, other than the devils, such as evil souls, bad customs and traditions, and the devils among mankind.

3️⃣. This is speaking of most of the devils and the mischievous ones among them; as for those who are not described as mischievous, they may not be chained up.

What is meant is that evil is reduced, and this does indeed happen during the month of Ramadān, because the incidence of evil and shameful deeds during this month is little compared to other months." {Al-Mufhim lima Ushkila min Talkhis Kitab Muslim, 3/136}

RELYING ON ALLAH ALONE IN ALL MATTERS

ALLĀH says,

And rely upon ALLĀH; and sufficient is ALLĀH as Disposer of affairs.

Therefore matters are to be referred to HIM and left to HIM, so HE will direct them in a way that is in the best interests of the individual, because HE knows what is in the best interests of HIS slave, whereas the individual may not know, and HE is able to bring it about in a way that the individual cannot. ALLĀH is more merciful towards HIS slave than he himself or his parents are, and HE is more kind than anyone else, especially in the case of the chosen ones among HIS slaves, who HE has constantly been taking care of and bestowing blessings upon them, both visible and hidden, especially when HE has commanded him to leave his affairs to HIM and promised to take care of him.

When a person has put his trust in ALLĀH in that manner, then do not ask about how every endeavour becomes easy, every difficult task becomes smooth, every calamity becomes bearable, every stressful situation is alleviated, all needs are met, blessings come down, trouble is warded off and evils are averted. Then you will see how the weak slave who delegated all his affairs to his master will be able to achieve many things that a group of people could not achieve, for ALLĀH will make easy for him that which is too difficult for the toughest and strongest of men to do. And it is ALLĀH Whose help we seek.

When Abdullah ibn al Mubarak (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) was asked about the descent of ALLĀH on the night of the 15th of Sha’bān, he said to the one who asked him:

"O weak one! The night of the fifteenth?! He, descends every night!"

AMONG THE FAVORS ALLAH HAS GRANTED PEOPLE ARE HEARING, SIGHT AND THE HEART

ALLĀH says:

And ALLĀH brought you out of the wombs of your mothers while you knew nothing. And HE gave you hearing, sight, and hearts, that you might give thanks.

ALLĀH mentions HIS blessings to HIS servants in that HE brought them from their mothers' wombs not knowing a thing, then HE gives them hearing to recognize voices, sight to see visible things and hearts - meaning reason - whose seat, according to the correct view, is the heart, although it was also said that its seat is the brain. With his reason, a person can distinguish between what is harmful and what is beneficial.

These abilities and senses develop gradually in man. The more he grows, the more his hearing, vision and reason increase, until they reach their peak.

ALLĀH has created these faculties in man to enable him to worship his Lord, so he uses all these organs, abilities and strengths to obey his Master.

Al-Bukhari reported in his Sahih from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of ALLĀH said: "ALLĀH says:

"Whoever takes MY friend as an enemy, has declared war on ME.

MY servant does not draw near to ME with anything better than his doing that which I have enjoined upon him, and MY servant keeps drawing near to ME by doing Nawafil (supererogatory) deeds until I love him.

And when I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his vision with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks.

Were he to ask ME for anything, I would give it to him, if he were to call on ME, I would respond, if he were to seek ME for refuge I would surely grant him it.

I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of MY believing servant, because he hates death and I hate to upset him, but it is inevitable."

The meaning of the Hadith is that when a person is sincere in his obedience towards ALLĀH, all his deeds are done for the sake of ALLĀH, so he only hears for the sake of ALLĀH, he only sees for the sake of ALLĀH - meaning he only listens to or looks at what has been allowed by ALLĀH. He does not strike or walk except in obedience to ALLĀH, seeking ALLĀH'S help in all of these things.

Sheikh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān (may ALLĀH preserve him upon goodness) said:

"The proof upon loving the Messenger ﷺ is not just mere claims people make, or celebrations that are done rather the proof upon it is in four affairs:

• Obedience to him in what he commanded.

• Refraining from what he prohibited.

• Believing in all of that which he informed.

• Worshipping ALLĀH only in the manner he legislated."

ALLĀH'S HANDS ARE WIDELY OUTSTRETCHED

ALLĀH says,

And the Jews say, "The Hand of ALLĀH is chained (i.e. HE does not give and spend of HIS Bounty)." Chained are their hands, and cursed are they for what they say. Rather, both HIS hands are extended; HE spends however HE wills.

HIS Hands are giving by night and by day, and HIS bounty pours forth abundantly at all times, relieving distress, removing hardship, enriching the poor, ransoming the captive, consoling the afflicted, giving to those who are in need, answering the cry of the desperate, responding to those who ask, bestowing blessings even upon those who do not ask, granting well-being to those who seek it and never depriving any sinner of HIS bounty. Indeed HIS bounty is enjoyed by righteous and evildoers alike, but HE shows further kindness to HIS close friends by helping them to do righteous deeds. Then HE praises them and attributes their righteous deeds to them, by HIS grace, and HE rewards them for those deeds in this world and in the hereafter, a reward that cannot be described and has not crossed the mind of man. HE takes care of them in all their affairs, bestows HIS blessings upon them and wards off harm from them, much of which they are unaware of. Glory be to the One from Whom all blessings come and to Whom they turn to ward off harm. Blessed be the One Whom no one can praise as HE deserves; rather HE is as HE has praised HIMSELF. Exalted be the One of Whose generosity people are never deprived, not even for the blink of an eye; rather they cannot exist or survive except by HIS grace.

May ALLĀH doom the one who in his ignorance thinks that he can do without his Lord and who ascribes to HIM that which is not befitting to HIS Majesty. Rather if ALLĀH were to take to task the Jews who said that or others of their ilk, for some of what they say, they would have been destroyed and doomed in this world. But they say these things, and ALLĀH shows forbearance, overlooks and gives respite, but HE never forgets about them.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) that: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The Right Hand of ALLĀH is full and that is never affected by the continuous spending, night and day. In HIS other Hand, is the Scale, which HE raises and lowers. Have you seen what ALLĀH has spent since HE created the heavens and the earth? And that has not decreased what is in HIS Hands in the slightest.'" {Ibn Mājah #197}

"If you want to fix your heart, or would like to see improvement in your child or friend, or anyone for that matter, then direct them to places where the Qur'ān is recited and direct them to be in the company of the Qur'ān.

ALLĀH will then cause them to become better, regardless of whether they want to or not!"

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: "My close friend (the Prophet ﷺ) advised me to do three things which I will not give up until I die: fasting three days of each month, praying Duha, and sleeping after Witr." {Al-Bukhārī #1124, Muslim #721}
