Were it not that people might ˹be tempted to˺ become one community ˹of disbelievers˺, WE would have provided for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful (ALLĀH), silver roofs for their houses, and ˹silver˺ elevators whereby they ascend.

And for their houses, doors ˹of silver˺, and thrones ˹of silver˺ on which they could recline.

And adornments of gold. Yet all this would have been nothing but a ˹fleeting˺ enjoyment of this world. And the Hereafter with your Lord is ˹only˺ for the righteous.

THE PROMISE OF EVIL FOR THE TRANSGRESSORS

ALLĀH says,

وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِي
And whoever turns away from My Reminder,

This means, "Whoever opposes my command and what I have revealed to MY Messenger, then he has turned away from it, neglected it and taken his guidance from other than it."

فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِيشَةً ضَنكًا
will certainly have a miserable life
.

meaning, his life will be hard in this world. He will have no tranquility and no expanding of his breast (ease). Rather, his chest will be constrained and in difficulty due to his misguidance. Even if he appears to be in comfort outwardly and he wears whatever he likes, eats whatever he likes and lives wherever he wants, he will not be happy. For verily, his heart will not have pure certainty and guidance. He will be in agitation, bewilderment and doubt. He will always be in confusion and a state of uncertainty. This is from the hardship of life.

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

The phrase "miserable life" has also been interpreted as referring to the punishment in the grave, for his grave will be narrow and he will be compressed in it and punished, as a requital for turning away from the reminder of his Lord. This is one of the verses that point to the punishment in the grave; the second such verse is: "...If you ˹O Muhammad˺ could but see the evildoers when they are in the throes of death and the angels are stretching out their hands..." (6: 93)

The third verse is: "WE will surely cause them to taste a lesser punishment before the greater punishment..." (32:21)

and the fourth verse is that in which ALLĀH said concerning the people of Pharaoh: "The fire, which will be shown to them morning and afternoon..."(40:46)

What made some of the earlier scholars think that this refers to the punishment of the grave only and limit its interpretation to that only - and ALLĀH knows best - is the end of the verse (20:124), at the end of which ALLĀH mentions the punishment of the Day of Resurrection.

Some commentators thought that the phrase "miserable life" applies to this world, and what befalls the one who turns away from his Lord’s reminder of distress, grief and pain, which is a kind of hastened portion of the punishment, as well as what will befall him in al-barzakh and in the hereafter, because the phrase "miserable life" is mentioned in general terms and is not specific, so it may refer to any stage.

In one of his lessons in al-Masjid al-Nabawi, sheikh 'Abd al-Razzaq al-Badr (may ALLĀH preserve him upon goodness) mentioned:

"If you ask ALLĀH "make the Qur'an a spring of my heart", then open the mushaf and recite it, ponder and reflect on the Words of Allah, and set aside a regular portion of your time for the Qur'an so that it will become a spring of your heart.

The Qur'an will never be a spring of one's heart while it remains sitting on the shelf or displayed - as some people do - for home decoration."

🌙 LIVE EVERY DAY LIKE IT'S RAMADĀN!

Once again, Ramadān, the month in which ALLĀH bestowed upon us so many of HIS favors has come and gone so quickly...

Alhamdulillah, for many of us, it was a time of self-reflection, to better ourselves spiritually and engage in various acts of worship to gain the pleasure of ALLĀH. But what happens now that we’ve just entered Shawwāl? Do we keep firm to this character we developed or slowly go back to our original state before Ramadān?

It was said: “If a Muslim continues to have the patience to do righteous deeds after Ramadān, this is a sign that his (fasting) has been accepted by his Lord, the Most Generous, the Bestower of blessings. If he fails to do righteous deeds after Ramadān and follows the ways of the Shaytān, this is a sign of humiliation, meanness, lowly status, and being deprived of the help of ALLĀH.”

Whatever acts of worship we took up in Ramadān, be it fasting, spending the nights in prayer, or just generally doing good deeds, we must try to keep up this compliance and continue to be as obedient to ALLĀH as we were in Ramadān.

Remaining steadfast proves to us that we have gained something beneficial from the holy month and that we didn’t just fast or spent greater time in worship for the sake of it being Ramadān. We should treat Ramadān, not as a one-off, but as a starting point to do good deeds, improve our spiritual awareness and come closer to ALLĀH for what remains of our lifetime.

ALLĀH says:
(وَٱعۡبُدۡ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ یَأۡتِیَكَ ٱلۡیَقِینُ)
“And worship your LORD until the certainty (death) comes to you.” [15:99]

Ibn Umar reported: A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ), “Which of the believers is the wisest?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Those who remember death often and have best prepared for it with good deeds; such are the wisest.” [Sunan Ibn Ma‌jah 4259]

But many of us wonder how we can keep the spirit of Ramadān going. In Ramadān, it seems to naturally fall in place, with us fasting in daylight hours, observing night prayers, giving charity, and reciting the Qur’an, while pondering over its meaning.

However, ALLĀH is so bountiful, that HE allows us to do each one of these acts throughout the year, just to name a few:

• We can still keep voluntary fasts (6 fasts of Shawwaal to begin with, already at our doorsteps).

• We can continue to perform night prayers.

• We can give to Charity and feed the poor and the needy all year round.

• And of course, we can recite the Qur’an anywhere and at any time.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“The best deeds are those done regularly even if they are few.” [Ibn Majah 4240]

Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said to me, "Do not be like so-and-so O 'Abdullāh! He used to pray during the night, then stopped the practice.''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

We ask ALLĀH to grant us the understanding, accept our good deeds, and keep us steadfast on HIS straight path. آمِيْن

THE MOUTHS OF THE DISBELIEVERS WILL BE SEALED ON THE DAY OF RESURRECTION

ALLĀH says,

This Day WE will seal their mouths, their hands will speak to US, and their feet will testify to what they used to commit.

This will be the state of the disbelievers and hypocrites on the Day of Resurrection, when they deny the sins they committed in this world and swear that they did not do that. ALLĀH will seal their mouths and cause their limbs to speak about what they did.

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Anas bin Malik, may ALLĀH be pleased with him, said,

"We were with the Prophet and he smiled so broadly that his molar could be seen, then he said:

Do you know why I am smiling?

We said, 'ALLĀH and HIS Messenger know best.'

He said: "Because of the way a servant will argue with his Lord on the Day of Resurrection. He will say, 'O Lord, will YOU not protect me from injustice!'

(ALLĀH) will say, "Of course."

He will say, "I will not accept any witness against me except from myself."

(ALLĀH) will say, "Today you will be a sufficient witness against yourself, and the honorable scribes will serve as witnesses against you."

Then his mouth will be sealed, and it will be said to his faculties, "Speak!" So they will speak of what he did. Then he will be permitted to speak, and he will say,

"May you be doomed! It was for you that I was fighting."

This was recorded by Muslim and An-Nasa'i.

Ibn Jarir narrated that Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari, may ALLĀH be pleased with him, said,

"The believer will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection, and his Lord will show him his deeds, just between him and HIS Lord. HE will admit it and will say, 'Yes, O Lord, I did do that.'

Then ALLĀH will forgive him his sins and conceal them, and no creature on earth will see any of those sins, but his good deeds will be seen, and he will want all the people to see them.

Then the disbeliever and the hypocrite will be brought to account, and his Lord will show him his deeds and he will deny them, saying, 'O Lord, by Your glory, this angel has written down things that I did not do.'

The angel will say to him, 'Did you not do such and such on such a day and in such a place?'

He will say, 'No, by Your glory, I did not do that.' When he says this, ALLĀH will seal his mouth."

2. He retracts his statement.

3. He publicly announces that he made such and such statement.

THERE IS NO REFUGE BESIDES ALLĀH

HADITH ON KEEPING SECRETS

Thabit (May ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: Anas (May ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of ALLĀH  ﷺ came to me while I was playing with the boys. She asked, "What was it?" I said, "It is a secret". My mother said; "Do not disclose to anyone the secret of Messenger of ALLĀH  ﷺ". As we grow up, we tend to forget the importance and value that our mother holds in our lives and the sacrifices she has made for us. But our beautiful religion does not allow us to neglect the women whose sacrifices are innumerable.

I also help her perform ablution while turning my face away from her (out of respect). Have I fulfilled my duty towards her?'

‘Umar said, 'No.' The man said, 'Even though I carry her on my back and exert myself in her service?'

‘Umar said, 'She used to do the same for you (when you were young) while hoping that you will live, as for you, you await when she will go away (die).'" {Kindness to Parents || Page 63}

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE QUR'ĀN

ALLĀH says,

وَهَذَا ذِكْرٌ مُّبَارَكٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ
And this ˹Qur'an˺ is a blessed Reminder which WE have sent down;

ALLĀH describes two characteristics that it possesses:

It is a reminder of all that one needs to be reminded of, such as knowing ALLĀH by HIS names, attributes and deeds; and the characteristics and stories of the Messengers and close friends of ALLĀH; Islamic rulings having to do with acts of worship, business dealings and other matters; rulings on requital, and paradise and hell. Through the Qur’an people are reminded of issues and proofs both rational and textual. ALLĀH calls it a reminder, because it reminds the individual of what ALLĀH has instilled in his mind and nature of believing in true stories, enjoining what is regarded as good on a rational basis, and forbidding what is regarded as evil on a rational basis.

The second characteristic that it possesses, namely that it is blessed, implies that it contains abundant and ever-increasing goodness. There is nothing more blessed than this Qur'an. Every good thing, blessing and increase, whether that is in terms of religious or worldly affairs, or in the hereafter, is because of it and is a result of adhering to it. As it is a blessed reminder, one should accept it with willing submission and give thanks to ALLĀH for this great gift, adhering to its teachings and seeking its blessings by learning its words and meanings. As for responding to it in the opposite manner, by turning away from it, ignoring it, rejecting it and not believing in it, this is one of the worst kinds of disbelief, ignorance and wrongdoing.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE CRUCIFIXION

ALLĀH'S statement:

وَقَوْلِهِمْ إِنَّا قَتَلْنَا الْمَسِيحَ عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولَ اللّهِ
And because of their saying, "WE killed Al-Masih, Isa, son of Maryam, the Messenger of ALLĀH,"

meaning, we killed the person who claimed to be the Messenger of ALLĀH. The Jews only uttered these words in jest and mockery, just as the polytheists said,

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ ۞ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ
O you to whom the Dhikr (the Qur'an) has been sent down! Verily, you are a mad man!. {15:6}

When ALLĀH sent Isa with proofs and guidance, the Jews, may ALLAH'S curses, anger, torment and punishment be upon them, envied him because of his Prophethood and obvious miracles; curing the blind and leprous and bringing the dead back to life, by ALLAH'S leave. He also used to make the shape of a bird from clay and blow in it, and it became a bird by ALLAH'S leave and flew.

Isa performed other miracles that ALLĀH honored him with, yet the Jews defied and bellied him and tried their best to harm him. ALLAH'S Prophet Isa could not live in any one city for long and he had to travel often with his mother, peace be upon them. Even so, the Jews were not satisfied, and they went to the king of Damascus at that time, a Greek polytheist who worshipped the stars. They told him that there was a man in Bayt Al-Maqdis misguiding and dividing the people in Jerusalem and stirring unrest among the king's subjects.

The king became angry and wrote to his deputy in Jerusalem to arrest the rebel leader, stop him from causing unrest, crucify him and make him wear a crown of thorns.

When the king's deputy in Jerusalem received these orders, he went with some Jews to the house that Isa was residing in, and he was then with twelve, thirteen or seventeen of his companions. That day was a Friday, in the evening.

They surrounded Isa in the house, and when he felt that they would soon enter the house or that he would sooner or later have to leave it, he said to his companions, "Who volunteers to be made to look like me, for which he will be my companion in Paradise?"

A young man volunteered, but Isa thought that he was too young. He asked the question a second and third time, each time the young man volunteering, prompting Isa to say, "Well then, you will be that man."

ALLĀH made the young man look exactly like Isa, while a hole opened in the roof of the house, and Isa was made to sleep and ascended to heaven while asleep. ALLĀH said:

إِذْ قَالَ اللّهُ يَا عِيسَى إِنِّي مُتَوَفِّيكَ وَرَافِعُكَ إِلَيَّ
And (remember) when ALLĀH said:"O Isa! I will take you and raise you to Myself)." {3:55}

When Isa ascended, those who were in the house came out. When those surrounding the house saw the man who looked like Isa, they thought that he was Isa. So they took him at night, crucified him and placed a crown of thorns on his head. The Jews then boasted that they killed Isa and some Christians accepted their false claim, due to their ignorance and lack of reason.

As for those who were in the house with Isa, they witnessed his ascension to heaven, while the rest thought that the Jews killed `Isa by crucifixion. They even said that Maryam sat under the corpse of the crucified man and cried, and they say that the dead man spoke to her.

All this was a test from ALLĀH for HIS servants out of HIS wisdom. ALLĀH explained this matter in the Glorious Qur'an which HE sent to HIS honorable Messenger, whom HE supported with miracles and clear, unequivocal evidence. ALLĀH is the Most Truthful, and HE is the Lord of the worlds Who knows the secrets, what the hearts conceal, the hidden matters in heaven and earth, what has occurred, what will occur, and what would occur if it was decreed.

A REMINDER OF THE TRUTHFULNESS OF ALLĀH’S PROMISES

ALLĀH says,

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ

meaning the Resurrection will undoubtedly come to pass.

فَلَ تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا
So, let not this present life deceive you,

means, 'this life is as nothing in compare to the great good that ALLĀH has promised to HIS close friends and the followers of HIS Messengers, so do not let these transient attractions distract you from that which is lasting.'

وَلَا يَغُرَّنَّكُم بِاللَّهِ الْغَرُورُ
and let not the chief deceiver deceive you about ALLĀH.

CONDITIONS FOR THE ACCEPTANCE OF DEEDS

The statement,

إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ اللّهُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ
Verily, ALLĀH accepts only from those who have Taqwa.

who fear ALLĀH in their actions.

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Abu Ad-Darda' said, "If I become certain that ALLĀH has accepted even one prayer from me, it will be better for me than this life and all that in it. This is because ALLĀH says,

إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ اللّهُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ
Verily, ALLĀH accepts only from the those who have Taqwa.

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

The more correct view concerning the meaning of fearing ALLĀH here is that what is referred to is those who show the quality of fearing ALLĀH in doing that action ˹of sacrifice˺, in the sense that their action is done sincerely for the sake of ALLĀH, following the Sunnah of the Messenger of ALLĀH.

ESSENTIALS OF SALVATION ARE PILLARS OF ISLAM

Abu Huraira, may Allāh be pleased with him, reported: A bedouin came to the Messenger of Allāh, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, "O Messenger of Allāh, show me a deed by which I may enter Paradise."

The Prophet said, "Worship Allāh and never associate anything with Him, establish the prescribed prayers, give the obligatory charity, and fast of the month of Ramadān."

The man said, "By Him in whose hand is my soul, I will never add anything to it, nor will I lessen anything from it."

When the man turned his back, the Prophet said, "Whoever is pleased to see a man from the people of Paradise, let him look at this one."

Indeed, those who disbelieve in OUR verses -  WE will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through WE will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, ALLĀH is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.

As for those who believe and do righteous deeds -  WE will admit them to gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there for ever and ever. There they will have purified spouses, and WE will place them under a vast shade.

THE COMMAND TO KEEP ONESELF CHASTE IF ONE IS NOT ABLE TO GET MARRIED

ALLĀH's saying

وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِ الَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ نِكَاحًا حَتَّى يُغْنِيَهُمْ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ
And let those who do not have the means to marry keep themselves chaste until ALLĀH enriches them out of HIS bounty
.

This ruling applies to the one who is unable to get married. ALLĀH instructs him to keep himself chaste, refrain from that which is prohibited and to take measures to restrain himself and prevent thoughts crossing his mind that may prompt him to fall into sin. He should also do what the Prophet (ﷺ) instructed, as he said: "O young men, whoever among you can afford it, let him get married, and whoever cannot, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him." (Muslim)

And let those who do not have the means to marry...

That is, they are not able to get married, either because they themselves are poor or because their guardians and masters are poor, or because the latter refused to arrange marriages for them, and they do not have the means to force them to do that. This interpretation is better than the interpretation of those who understood it to refer to those who cannot afford the mahr (dowry) for marriage. There are two reservations about the latter interpretation:

1 - The word mahr is not mentioned in this verse, so we should not assume that this is what is meant.

2- Introducing the idea of the mahr would restrict the meaning to free people who can or cannot afford it, and would exclude male and female slaves and those whose marriage is the responsibility of their guardians, as we have mentioned above.

...keep themselves chaste until ALLĀH enriches them out of HIS bounty.

This is a promise to the one who keeps himself chaste that ALLĀH will suffice him and make things easy for him; he is instructed to await relief so that his situation will not become unbearable.
