TRUE FASTING IS LEAVING SINS, BAD WORDS

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said,

“When one of you wakes up in the morning for fasting, then he should not use obscene language or behave foolishly. If anyone abuses him or fights with him, he should say twice: Indeed, I am fasting.”

[Muslim #1151]

“Whoever does not leave evil words and deeds while fasting, ALLĀH does not need him to leave food and drink.”

WARNING AGAINST AN ENCOMPASSING FITNAH

ALLĀH warns;

وَاتَّقُواْ فِتْنَةً لاَّ تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ مِنكُمْ خَأصَّةً
And fear a fitnah which will not only affect the wrongdoers among you.

ALLĀH warns HIS believing servants of a Fitnah, trial and test, that encompasses the wicked and those around them. Therefore, such trial will not be restricted to the sinners and evildoers. Rather, it will reach the others if the sins are not stopped and prevented.

Of the most precise things that have been mentioned under this topic, is what was recorded by Imam Ahmad from Hudhayfah bin Al-Yaman that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "By HE in Whose Hand is my soul! You will enjoin righteousness and forbid evil, or ALLĀH will send a punishment upon you from HIM; you will supplicate then to HIM, but HE will not answer your supplication."

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Ar-Riqad said, "I heard Hudhayfah saying: 'A person used to utter one word during the time of the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) become a hypocrite on account of it. I now hear such words from one of you four times in the same sitting. Surely, you will enjoin good, forbid evil and encourage each other to do good or ALLĀH will surround you all with torment, or make the wicked among you become your leaders. The righteous among you will then supplicate, but their supplication will not be accepted.'"

Imam Ahmad recorded that An-Numan bin Bashir said that the Prophet ﷺ gave a speech in which he said, while pointing to his ears with two of his fingers: "The parable of the person abiding by ALLĀH'S order and restrictions in comparison to those who violate them, or sit idle while they are being violated, is that of those who drew lots for their seats in a boat. Some of them got seats in the lower part, which is the most rough and worst part, and the others in the upper. When the former needed water, they had to go up to bring water and that troubled the others, so they said, Let us make a hole in our share of the ship and get water, saving those who are above us from troubling them, so, if the people in the upper part let the others do what they suggested, all the people of the ship would be destroyed, but if they prevented them, both parties would be safe."

This was recorded by Al-Bukhari, but not Muslim, in the Book of Partnerships and the Book of Witnesses. It was also recorded by At-Tirmidhi through a different route of narration.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Umm Salamah, the Prophet's wife, said,

I heard the Messenger of ALLĀH saying: "If sins become apparent in my Ummah, ALLĀH will surround them with punishment from HIM."

I said: 'O ALLĀH'S Messenger! Will they have righteous people among them then?'

He said: "Yes."

I asked: 'What will happen to them?'

He said: "They will be stricken as the people, but they will end up with ALLAH'S forgiveness and pleasure."

Imam Ahmad recorded that Jarir said that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "Every people among whom sins are being committed, while they are mightier and more numerous than those who do wrong, yet they did nothing to stop them, then ALLĀH will surround them all with punishment."

FASTING IN SHA'BAN IS BETTER THAN FASTING IN THE SACRED MONTHS

Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab (may ALLĀH have mercy upon him) said: "Fasting in Sha'ban is better than fasting in the sacred months. Because the status of such is like that of al-Sunan al-Rawatib (Regular Sunnah prayer) when performed with the obligatory prayers."

{Lata’if al-Ma‘arif]

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin (may ALLĀH have mercy upon him) said: "That is so because it acts like al-Rawatib when done prior to the obligatory prayer."

{Sharh Riyadhus-Saliheen}

Hence, we should be keen on fasting the month or part of it, to attain its virtue, unless contradicted by an obligatory act of worship.

REWARD OF FASTING AND PRAYING IN RAMADĀN

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said,

“Whoever fasts the month of Ramadān due to faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven. Whoever stands in prayer during the Night of Decree due to faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”

WHEN A TRAVELER BY PLANE BREAKS THE FAST

FIRST SCENARIO: The sun sets and Fulānah broke her fast, then the airplane takes off and rises, and she sees that the sun has not set.

If the sun sets and she breaks her fast on the ground, then when the plane takes off she sees the sun, she does not have to refrain from eating and drinking, because she has completed her fast in full, and there is no need to repeat the act of worship after she has finished it.

Sheikh Abdul-Razzaq Afifi (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "If the sun sets on ground, the fasting person breaks his fast. If the plane rises in space and he sees that the sun has not set, he continues to break his fast (i.e, he does not refrain from eating and drinking)."

{Fatāwa of Sheikh Abdul-Razzaq Afifi: Page 168}

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymīn (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "A man had the sun set while he was on the ground, and he broke his fast, and the plane flew with him, then he saw the sun. We say: 'It is not necessary for him to refrain ˹from eating and drinking˺, because the day has ended for him, and the sun did not rise on him, but rather he rose on it.'"

{Al-Sharh Al-Mumti’, 6/397}

SECOND SCENARIO: Fulān travels by plane while fasting, then finds out via a watch, television, or other means that it is time to break the fast in the country from which he traveled or the country near him during his travel; but he can see the sun because of the height of the plane.

If the plane takes off before sunset, and he wants to complete that day’s fast whilst traveling, then he should not break his fast until the sun sets in the place where he is in the air.

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymīn (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The people who are on the mountains or on the plains and in the high-rise buildings, each of them has his own ruling. Whoever has the sun set is permissible for him to break the fast, and whoever does not, then not."

{Al-Sharh Al-Mumti’, 6/398}

The Standing Committee said: "If the fasting person is on board an airplane and he finds out through the clock or the telephone that a nearby city has broken the fast, but he can see the sun because the plane is high up, then he is not allowed to break his fast because ALLĀH says: "Then complete the Sawm (fast) until the night (i.e., sunset)." {al-Baqarah: Verse 187}

{Majmu’ Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Daimah, 10/136}

It should be noted that a person who is travelling during the day in Ramadān is allowed not to fast as indicated by the Quran and Sunnah, and the consensus of the ummah. ALLĀH says: "But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍān˺" {al-Baqarah: Verse 185}

ALLĀH SAVES PEOPLE FROM HELL DURING RAMADĀN

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“On the first night of the month of Ramadān, the devils are chained, the jinn are restrained, and the gates of Hellfire are closed and none of its gates are opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and none of its gates are closed. A heavenly caller announces: O seeker of good, come near! O seeker of evil, stop short! ALLĀH will save them from the Hellfire and that is during every night of Ramadān.”

THE COMMAND TO ADHERE TO TRUTHFULNESS

ALLĀH says:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ
O Believer! Fear ALLĀH

That is, O you who believe in ALLĀH, and in what ALLĀH enjoins you to believe in, do what faith requires, which is to fear ALLĀH, and avoid and keep away from that which ALLĀH forbids.

وَكُونُواْ مَعَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
and be with the truthful

That is, those who are true in word, deed and conduct, those whose words are true and whose deeds and conduct cannot be but based on truth, devoid of laziness and apathy, free of bad intentions, and based on sincerity and good intentions. For truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to paradise.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said:

"Hold on to truth, for being truthful leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. Verily, a man will keep saying the truth and striving for truth, until he is written before ALLĀH as very truthful (Siddiq).

Beware of lying, for lying leads to sin, and sin leads to the Fire. Verily, the man will keep lying and striving for falsehood until he is written before ALLĀH as a great liar."

ACT THAT FACILITATES QIYĀMU-LAYL

1⃣ Sincerity of intention.

"And they were not commanded except to worship ALLĀH, ˹being˺ sincere to HIM in religion..."

{al-Bayyinah: Verse 5}

Ibn al-Qayyim (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The degree to which a person is helped and aided by ALLĀH depends on the degree of his intention, drive, aim and hopes."

2⃣ Knowing the virtues of qiyāmu-layl.

Among the reports that describe the virtues of this act of worship is the hadith in which the Prophet ﷺ urged us in performing it when he said: "You should pray qiyāmu-layl, for it is the habit of the righteous people who came before you, and it will bring you closer to your Lord, expiate for bad deeds, prevent sin, and expel disease from the body."

{al-Tirmidhi #3549}

3⃣ Sleeping on ones right side.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When any one of you goes to bed, let him clear his bed by hitting it with his garment, for he does not know what may have come onto it. Then let him lie down on his right side..."

{Bukhari #6320, Muslim #2714}

Ibn al-Qayyim (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "There is a reason for his lying on his right side, which is that the heart is located on the left, so if a person lays on his left side, he will sleep too deeply, because the hearts position will be too comfortable, but if he sleeps on his right side, he will not be too settled, so he wont sleep deeply."

4⃣ Sleeping in a state of purity.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Purify these bodies and ALLĀH will purify you, for there is no slave who goes to sleep in a state of purity but an angel spends the night with him, and every time he turns over, [the angel] says, 'O ALLĀH, forgive YOUR slave, for he went to bed in a state of purity.'"

{al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr #13456}

5⃣ Reciting prescribed adhkár before sleep shields against Shaytān and aids in waking up for qiyāmu-layl by the permission of ALLĀH.

It was mentioned before the Prophet ﷺ that there was a man who slept the night till morning (after sunrise). The Prophet ﷺ said, "He is a man in whose ears or ear Shaytān had urinated."

{al-Bukhari #3270}

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said, "Satan ties three knots on the back of your head while you are asleep. On every knot he puts the saying: The night is long, stay asleep. When you wake up and remember Allah, one knot is undone. When you perform ablution, the second knot is undone. When you pray, the third knot is undone and you will wake up energetic with a good heart; otherwise, you will wake up lazy with a mischievous heart."

{al-Bukhari #1091}

6⃣ Keen on taking a nap before or after zuhr.

Anas (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Take a nap, for the shayātīn do not take naps."

{al-Mu’jam al-Awsaṭ lil-Ṭabarānī 28}

Ishaaq ibn Abd-Allāh said: "Taking a nap is one of the deeds of good people. It revitalizes the heart and helps one to pray qiyāmu-layl."

7⃣ Avoiding eating or drinking too much. Eating and drinking too much are two of the main obstacles that prevent people from praying qiyāmu-layl.

Sufyaan al-Thawri said: "You should eat little, so that you will be able to pray qiyāmu-layl."

8⃣ Avoiding sin.

Some people asked Ibrāhīm b. Adham: "We cannot get up for the night prayers. Can you advise us as to what we should do in order to perform them?" He replied, "If you do not disobey ALLĀH  during the day, HE will wake you to stand before HIM during the night because to stand in front of your Lord in the night is a great honor for you, and the disobedient do not deserve this honor."

We ask ALLĀH to make it easy for us to remember HIM, to thank HIM and to worship HIM properly. May ALLĀH's peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad.

CAN THE ONE WHO HAS NOT REACHED PUBERTY FAST?

Ans: Yes, it is recommended.

Before puberty, fasting is not compulsory according to the consensus of scholars. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The pen is lifted from three people: a sleeping person until he awakens, a child until he reached puberty, and an insane person until he regains his sanity." {al-Tirmidhi #1423}

However, the child's guardian should encourage him to fast, according to his ability, so that he gets used to it, as was done by the Prophet's companions with their children. Al Rubayyi’ bint Mu’awwadh (may ALLĀH be pleased with her) said about fasting ‘Āshūrā’ at the time when it was mandatory to fast it and not voluntary: "We used to make our young boys fast, and we made them a toy made out of wool. If one of the boys cried [wanting] food, we would give him [the toy to distract him] until it was time to break the fast." {Al Bukhari #1960}

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "A young child should not be forced to fast until he has reached the age of adolescence, but he may be told to fast if he is able to do it, so that he may get used to it and it will be easier for him after he reaches puberty. The Sahabah (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) – who are the best of this ummah – used to make their children fast when they were young."

{Majmu’ Fatawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin, 19/28, 29}

Some people are quite lenient and lax when it comes to making their children fast. A situation may even arise where the young child feels enthusiastic and chooses to fast and is physically capable of doing so, then his father or mother order him to break his fast claiming that it is out of sympathy. Little do they know that real sympathy is in stressing the importance of fasting and teaching the child about it.

On the other hand, fasting becomes compulsory as soon as the signs of puberty appear: wet dreams, growth of coarse hair in the pubic area, menstruation for women, and reaching the age of fifteen. It then becomes prohibited to abandon it or to obey anyone, whether it be parents, society or a leader, who would authorize or order to abandon it without legitimate excuse.

Know that this worldly life is no more than play, amusement, luxury, mutual boasting, and competition in wealth and children. This is like rain that causes plants to grow, to the delight of the planters. But later the plants dry up and you see them wither, then they are reduced to chaff. And in the Hereafter there will be either severe punishment or forgiveness and pleasure of ALLĀH, whereas the life of this world is no more than the delusion of enjoyment.

˹So˺ compete with one another for forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who believe in ALLĀH and HIS messengers. That is the bounty of ALLĀH which HE gives to whom HE wills, and ALLĀH is the possessor of great bounty.

THE REALITY OF THIS WORLD AND THE HEREAFTER

ALLĀH speaks of this world and the hereafter in a manner which implies that one should lose interest in this world and long for the hereafter. ALLĀH says:

وَمَا هَذِهِ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلاَّ لَهْوٌ وَلَعِبٌ
And this life of the world is only an amusement and a play!

Which distracts people’s hearts and minds, because of what ALLĀH has created in it of adornment, pleasures and desires that attract those whose hearts have turned away from the truth and that look attractive to the eyes of the negligent and give joy to souls whose main pursuit is falsehood. But it quickly passes and comes to an end, and the one who is in love with it will get nothing but sorrow, loss and regret.

وَإِنَّ الدَّارَ الاْإخِرَةَ لَهِيَ الْحَيَوَانُ
But the Hereafter is indeed the real life

That is, the perfect life, one of the characteristics of which is that people there will be physically strong, because their bodies and strength will be created for life, and everything will be available there that makes life perfect and brings pleasure and joy and fulfilment of physical desires, by way of food, drink, spouses and so on, such as no eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor has it entered the mind of man.

لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ
If only they knew.

They would not give precedence to this world over the hereafter, and if only they understood, they would not have lost interest in the abode of the only true life or been distracted by this abode of distraction and play. This indicates that those who have such knowledge must inevitably give precedence to the hereafter over this world, because of what they know about the nature of the two realms.

EXCELLENCE OF PERFORMING ABLUTION AT HOME

'Uthman bin 'Affan (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: I saw the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ performing Wudu' the way I have just done it and said, "He who performs Wudu' like this, his previous sins will be forgiven and his Salat and walking to the mosque will be considered as supererogatory act of worship.'' {Muslim}

{Riyadh us-Saliheen, Book 9, Chapter 185, Hadith 1024}

COMMENTARY:

Wudu' is a means of remission of minor sins, provided those sins are not related to the rights of people because they too will not be forgiven without penitence and compensating the aggrieved or the wronged.

To perform Wudu' at home before proceeding to the mosque for Salat is highly meritorious. He who does so, will be purged of minor sins. Then his going to the mosque and performance of Salat there, is a means for gaining further reward.

BEING KIND TO THE DIVORCED WIFE

ALLĀH Says;

When you divorce women and they have almost reached the end of their waiting period, either retain them honourably or let them go honourably.

This is a command from ALLĀH to men that when one of them divorces his wife with a reversible divorce, he should treat her kindly. So when her term of Iddah (waiting period) nears its end, he either takes her back in a way that is better, including having witnesses that he has taken her back, and he lives with her with kindness. Or, he should release her after her Iddah finishes and then kindly asks her to depart from his house, without disputing, fighting with her or using foul words.

THE BELIEVER AND THE DISOBEDIENT ARE NOT EQUAL

ALLĀH says;

أَفَمَن كَانَ مُوْمِنًا كَمَن كَانَ فَاسِقًا
Then is one who is a believer like one who is defiantly disobedient?

Here ALLĀH draws our attention to the established principle that two different things cannot be equal, and that HIS wisdom dictates that they should not be equal.

أَفَمَن كَانَ مُوْمِنًا
Then is one who is a believer

whose heart is filled with faith and he has complied fully with ALLĀH’s laws, and his faith has left an impact on his behaviour and attitude, such as refraining from that which incurs the wrath of ALLĀH and deeds that are detrimental to faith,

كَمَن كَانَ فَاسِقًا
Like one who is defiantly disobedient

whose heart is ruined and devoid of faith, so he has no religious deterrent and therefore he hastens to commit all kinds of sins as a result of ignorance and wrongdoing, and he turns away from obedience to ALLĀH because of his evildoing. Can these two people be equal?

لاَّ يَسْتَوُونَ
They are not equal!

from either a rational or Islamic point of view, just as night and day, light and darkness, cannot be equal. Thus their recompense in the hereafter will not be the same.

THE BEST CLOTHING IS TAQWA

ALLĀH says:

وَلِبَاسُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيۡرٌۚ
...but the clothing of taqwa - that is best.

That is, better than physical clothing, for the garment of taqwa lasts and does not wear out or vanish; it is the beauty of the heart and soul. As for outward clothing, its purpose is to cover the ‘awrah sometimes, or to be an adornment for the wearer, and it has no other benefit beyond that.

Moreover, if a person cannot obtain this clothing, all that results from that is the uncovering of his ‘awrah, which does not harm him if he cannot help it. But if there is no garment of taqwa, then his inner ‘awrah becomes uncovered, which results in disgrace and shame.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

Ibn Rajab said: "Taqwa of ALLĀH means that a person should make a fence between himself and between ALLĀH'S Punishment, anger and displeasure by doing all that HE has ordered and abstaining from all that HE has forbidden."

WORSHIP ALLĀH ALONE AND BE GRATEFUL

ALLĀH says:

بَلِ ٱللَّهَ فَٱعۡبُدۡ
Rather, worship ALLĀH ˹Alone˺

That is, devote your worship to HIM alone, with no partner or associate.

وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّٰكِرِينَ
And be one of the grateful.

For HIS guidance. Just as ALLĀH is to be thanked for worldly blessings, such as physical good health and well-being, granting provision, and so on, HE is also to be thanked and praised for spiritual blessings, such as enabling one to be sincere and to fear HIM. In fact it is spiritual blessings that are real blessings. Pondering and realising that they come from ALLĀH and giving thanks to HIM for them will protect one from self-admiration that affects many people who strive hard, because of their ignorance. Otherwise, if a person were to understand the reality of things, he would not develop self-admiration because of the blessing which requires him to give more thanks to ALLĀH.

CAN INJECTIONS BE TAKEN DURING FAST?

Ans: Yes, injections are allowed except injections that contains nourishment.

It is permissible for a fasting person to take medicine by injection, whether intramuscular (injected through the muscle) or intravenous (injected through the veins), during the day in Ramadān. However, it is not permissible for the fasting person to be given an injection for nourishment purposes during the day in Ramadān.

It says in Fatāwa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah li’l-Ifta’ (10/252): "It is permissible to receive medicine by injection into a muscle or vein, for one who is fasting, during the day in Ramadān. But it is not permissible for one who is fasting to receive an injection of nutrients during the day in Ramadān, because that comes under the same ruling as consuming food and drink, so using such injections is regarded as a trick to break the fast in Ramadān. If it is possible to give the intramuscular or intravenous injection during the night, that is better."

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymīn was asked about the ruling regarding the effect of medical injections on the fast during the daytime of Ramadān and he said:

"Medical injections are of two types. The purpose of one of them is nourishment and to sustain the body without the need of eating and drinking, because it has the same meaning. Therefore, this type breaks the fast, because of the texts of the Islamic law, if the meaning which they contain is present in any form, then this form is given the ruling of that text.

In reference to the second type, it is the injection that does not nourish. This means that it is not a substitute for eating and drinking. This type does not break the fast because the text does not relate to it in wording or meaning. For it is not food or drink, nor does it have the meaning of food or drink. The basic principle is that the fast is correct until it is confirmed that something corrupts it according to the evidence of the Islamic law."

That is, let them rely on HIM to bring that which is in their best interests and ward off harm from them, and let them trust HIM to help them attain what they want, for the one who puts his trust in HIM will never be disappointed. As for the one who puts his trust in anyone other than HIM, he will indeed be disappointed and will not attain what he hopes for.

THE TRUE CALAMITY

Ibn al-Jawzī (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"Perhaps losing what you have missed out will cause you to turn to ALLAAH ﷻ and getting it will distract you from HIM. This is obvious, based on the fact that were it not for this calamity you would not have turned to HIM, because the real calamity is what distracts you from HIM, but what makes you stand before HIM is good for you and is in your best interests."

Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for ALLĀH, Lord of the worlds.

HE has no partner. And of this I have been commanded,  and I am the first  ˹among you˺ of the Muslims."

Say, "Should I seek a lord other than ALLĀH while HE is the Lord of everything?" No one will reap except what they sow. No soul burdened with sin will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and HE will inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

And HE is the One Who has placed you as successors on earth and elevated some of you in rank over others, so HE may test you with what HE has given you. Surely your Lord is swift in retribution, but HE is certainly All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

VALID REASONS FOR BREAKING THE FAST

Q2: The following are valid reasons for one to break the fast of Ramadān except?

Ans: Not eating Suhūr

ALLĀH has made things convenient for HIS servants by only mandating fasting for those who are capable of doing it, and HE has pardoned those who are incapable of fasting due to a legitimate shar’i reason.

The legitimate reasons includes the following:

1. Traveling

ALLĀH says: But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍân˺. [al-Baqarah:185]

It should be noted however that a valid reason for shortening prayers while traveling is if the journey is long enough, and the traveler must not have the intention to settle in the destination. The purpose of the journey must also be a sound one, as the concession of not fasting while traveling is not granted to those whose purpose is sinful.

2. Old age
Old age refers to one who is old and has lost his strength, or who is approaching death, so that every day he becomes weaker, until he dies, or who is suffering from a terminal or incurable illness and has no hope of recovery. The evidence is the saying of ALLĀH: And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. [al-Baqarah:184]

Ibn 'Abbas (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said that this verse has not been abrogated, and it applies to old men and old women who cannot fast, so for each day they should feed one poor person.

3. Intense hunger and thirst
An-Nawawi (may ALLĀH mercy on him) said: "Our companions and others said: Whoever is overcome by hunger and thirst, and fears that he may die, must break the fast, even if he is in good health and is not travelling, because ALLĀH says: “And do not kill (or destroy) yourselves: Surely, to you ALLĀH has been Most Merciful”
[an-Nisa’ 4:29]

[al-Majmoo‘, 6/258]

The scholars explained further that the one who break the fast due to intense hunger or thirst should make it up, and if he ended his fast prematurely without enduring the requisite hardship that permits breaking the fast, he must repent for his actions and refrain from doing so in the future.

4. Compulsion
Compulsion involves the use of threats by one individual to coerce another person into doing or refraining from doing something against their wishes.

Ibn ‘Abbaas رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "ALLĀH has pardoned my ummah for mistakes, what they forget what they are forced to do.” [Ibn Majah, 2045]

5. Menstruation and postnatal bleeding

6. Sickness

7. Pregnancy and breastfeeding

THE PROHIBITION OF SPYING AND BACKBITING

ALLĀH said,

وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا
And do not spy (on each other).

Tajassus, usually harbors ill intentions, and the spy is called a Jasus.

As for Tahassus (inquiring) it is usually done for a good reason.

ALLĀH the Exalted and Most Honored said that Prophet Yaqub said,

يبَنِىَّ اذْهَبُواْ فَتَحَسَّسُواْ مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَايْـَسُواْ مِن رَّوْحِ اللَّهِ
"O my sons! Go you and inquire (Tahassasu) about Yusuf and his brother, and never give up hope of ALLAH'S mercy." {Yusuf: Verse 87}

Both of these terms, Tajassus' and Tahassus' could have evil connotations.

In the Sahih it is recorded that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: "Neither commit Tajassus nor Tahassus, nor hate each other, nor commit Tadabur. And be brothers, O servants of ALLĀH."

Al-Awza
i said: "Tajassus means, to search for something, while Tahassus means, listening to people when they are talking without their permission, or eavesdropping at their doors. Tadabur refers to shunning each other."

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded this statement.

ALLĀH the Exalted said about backbiting;

وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا
Nor backbite each other.

thus prohibiting it, which was explained in a Hadith collected by Abu Dawud that Abu Hurayrah said: "It was asked, O ALLĀH'S Messenger! What is backbiting?'"

He ﷺ said: "Mentioning about your brother in a manner that he dislikes."

He was asked, What if my brother was as I mentioned?'

He ﷺ said: "If he was as you mentioned, you will have committed backbiting. But if he was not as you say about him, you will have falsely accused him." {At-Tirmidhi}

Backbiting was sternly warned against, and this is why ALLĀH the Exalted and Most Blessed compared it to eating the flesh of a dead human being,

أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ
Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother You would hate it.

Just as you hate eating the flesh of a dead person, on account of your nature; so hate backbiting, on account of your religion. The latter carries a punishment that is worse than the former. This Ayah seeks to discourage people from backbiting and warns against it.

THE NUMBER OF RAK'AH IN THE TARAWīH PRAYER

Q16: Tarawīh prayer comprises of how may Rak'ah?

Ans: Unlimited Rak'ah

There is a valid scholarly difference of opinion on the specific number of rak'ah in Tarawīh prayers as the Prophet ﷺ did not specify the number of rak'ah to be performed for Tarawīh, but it is reported that he performed eleven raka'hs. However, some companions performed more, which proves a certain flexibility on this subject.

The evidence that there is no set number for prayers at night – which includes Tarawīh – is the hadith of Ibn ‘Umar according to which a man asked the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ about prayer at night. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Prayers at night are to be offered two by two (two rak’ahs at a time). If any of you fears that the time of dawn is approaching then let him pray one rak’ah as Witr."

{Bukhari #846, Muslim #749}

Ibn Taymiyyah (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "If a person prays Tarawīh according to the madhhabs of Abu Hanifah, al-Shafi'i and Ahmad, with twenty rak’ahs, or according to the madhhab of Mālik, with thirty-six rak'ahs, or with thirteen or eleven rak’ahs, he has done well, as Imam Ahmad said, because there is nothing to specify the number. So the greater or lesser number of rak'ahs depends on how long or short the qiyam (standing in the prayer) is."

{Al-Ikhtiyarat: Page 64}

As such, we should not fall into extremism by causing arguments during Ramadān or even accusing those who follow another opinion of "innovation" in Islam.
