FASTING AL-AYYAM AL-BEED (THE WHITE DAYS) FOR JUMĀDAL-ŪLĀ 1446AH

The white days of the month refer to the 13th, 14th, and 15th of each lunar month. The moon is at its fullest and most luminous during this period. Fasting on these days (Al-Ayyam Al-Beed) is sunnah, mentioned in various hadith.

Abu Dharr (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said to me: "If you fast any part of the month, then fast the 13th, 14th, and 15th.” {Sunan an-Nasai #2424}

It was narrated that 'Abdullāh ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said to me: "It is sufficient for you to fast three days every month because, for every good deed, you will have (the reward of) ten like it, so that will be like fasting for a lifetime." {Al-Bukhārī #1874, Muslim #1159}

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: "My close friend (the Prophet ﷺ) advised me to do three things which I will not give up until I die: fasting three days of each month, praying Duha, and sleeping after Witr." {Al-Bukhārī #1124, Muslim #721}

FASTING DATES:

In Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and South Africa:

- Friday, 15th November
- Saturday, 16th November
- Sunday, 17th November

NB: If your country is not mentioned, please confirm the dates with your local Islamic Centers.

HASTENING TO PERFORM RIGHTEOUS DEEDS.

ALLĀH says: "So hasten towards all that is good." {Al-Baqarah || Verse 148}

"And spend ˹in charity˺ from what WE have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, My Lord, if only YOU would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be of the righteous." {Al-Munāfiqūn || Verse 10}

Abu Hurairah (May ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH said, "Hasten to do good deeds before you are overtaken by one of the seven afflictions." Then (giving a warning) he said, "Are you waiting for poverty which will make you unmindful of devotion, or prosperity which will make you corrupt, or a disease which will disable you, or senility which will make you mentally unstable, or sudden death which will take you all of a sudden, or Ad-Dajjal who is the worst expected, or the Hour; and the Hour will be most grievous and most bitter.'' {Sunan at-Tirmidhī #2306}

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said, “O Messenger of ALLĀH, which charity has the greatest reward?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “That you give charity while you are healthy, greedy, fearing poverty, and hoping to be rich. Do not delay giving until you are on your deathbed, then say it is for such a person. It already belongs to that person.” {Al-Bukhārī #1419, Muslim #1032}

It was confirmed in the Sunnah that the individual's deeds are raised and presented to the Lord of the Worlds on a daily (Fajr and Asr), weekly (Mondays and Thursdays) and yearly basis (Sha'bān). Regarding this, Ibn al-Qayyim (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "From the benefits of knowing this is that an individual should hasten, strive and be diligent to do good deeds, especially during the times in which his deeds are being presented. This is why the Prophet (ﷺ) would fast on Mondays and Thursdays, since they are the days in which the weekly accounts are presented. He (ﷺ) said: “Deeds are presented ˹to ALLĀH˺ on Mondays and Thursdays; therefore, I like that my actions be presented while I am fasting.” {Ḥāshiyah Ibn al-Qayyim 'Alā Ṣunan Abī Dawūd || 12/313}

These are indications that the Muslim should always be mindful of the fact that his actions are recorded and presented at every instance to the All Knowing, the All Aware; hence, it is necessary that he constantly takes account of his actions, hastens to do good deeds and repents to ALLĀH for his sins and shortcomings.

PROHIBITION OF CONTEMNING OTHERS

It is reported on the authority of Jundub (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) that he said: “ALLĀH's Messenger (ﷺ) said: “A man said: "By ALLĀH! ALLĀH will not forgive such and such a person, at which ALLĀH, Almighty, All powerful said: “Who is he who swears about ME that I would not forgive so-and-so? I have pardoned him and wiped out your (the swearer's) deeds.” {Muslim #2621}

According to another narration on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) it is reported that the man who said this was a believing slave; Abu Hurairah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: “He spoke one word which destroyed his life in this world and in the Hereafter.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) informs us in this Hadith that there were two men, a righteous man and a sinful man, the former condemned the latter and swore that ALLĀH would never forgive him his sins. ALLĀH became angry at this statement which suggests that anyone may be barred from ALLĀH’s Mercy and Forgiveness and declared that, on the contrary, HE had already forgiven the sinner and HE, Most High, further added that HE had invalidated the deeds ofthe righteous man. Thus due to an injudicious word, the righteous man’s deeds were made to count for nothing while the sinner was forgiven.

Benefits Derived From This Hadith

1⃣. The forbiddance of swearing on ALLĀH’s behalf.

2⃣. The prohibition of making assumptions about ALLĀH.

3⃣. Confirmation of ALLĀH’s Divine Attribute of Speech in a manner befitting HIS Majesty.

4⃣. The obligation to be circumspect when speaking of ALLĀH.

5⃣. Evidence of the vastness of ALLĀH Bounty and Mercy.

6⃣. That the most important deeds are the last ones in a person’s life.

7⃣. That a person might be forgiven his sins because of the words or actions of another.

8⃣. That a person’s deeds might be invalidated because of an injudicious word.

9⃣. The forbiddance of barring anyone from ALLĀH’s Bounty and Mercy.

WHAT TO DO FOR A DYING PERSON

When death approaches a person, those in his presence are required to do certain things, as described as follows:

1⃣ He should be gently but firmly prompted to utter the Shahadah (La ilāha illa-Allāh).

Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri narrated that: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Exthort your dying to say: 'La illāha illa-Allāh (None has the right to be worshipped but ALLĀH)'"

{Muslim #916 and others}

Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, "He whose last words are La illāha illa-Allāh (None has the right to be worshipped but ALLĀH), will enter Paradise."

{Abu Dāwūd #3116}

2⃣ The prompting should be done by commanding him and helping him to utter it himself.

Anas reported that ALLAH’S Messenger (ﷺ) visited a dying man of the Ansar and said to him: "0 my maternal uncle! Say, 'Laa ilāha illa-ALlāh' The man asked, 'Am I your maternal or paternal uncle?' The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, 'Maternal' He asked, 'Is it good for me to say, Laa ilāha illa-ALlāh'. He (ﷺ) replied, 'Yes!'"

{Ahmad #12543}

3⃣ Supplication should be sincerely made for him and to say good things that give him glad tidings.

Umm Salamah reported that ALLAH’S Messenger (ﷺ) said: "When you are present with a sick or dying person, say good things, because the angels endorse what you say (by saying amin)."

Umm Salamah added that when Abu Salamah died, she went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and told him, "O ALLĀH's Messenger (ﷺ)! Abu Salamah has passed away." He instructed her to say:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلَهُ وَأَعْقِبْنِي مِنْهُ عُقْبَى حَسَنَةً

O ALLĀH! forgive me and him (Abu Salamah) and give me a better substitute than he.

So I said (this), and ALLĀH gave me in exchange Muhammad, who is better for me than him (Abu Salamah).

{Muslim #919}

4⃣ It is permissible for a Muslim to visit a dying disbeliever in other to call them to Islam.

Anas reported that a Jewish youth used to serve the Prophet (ﷺ). He (ﷺ) visited him in his fatal illness, sat by his head, and said to him, "Embrace Islam; embrace Islam!" The boy looked at his father (as if to take his permission), and he told him, “Obey Abu al-Qasim!” So he did, and then died. The Prophet (ﷺ) departed saying: "All praise be to ALLĀH who has saved him from the Fire."

He then commanded his companions: "Pray janazah for your companions."

ALLĀH'S SIGNS AND BLESSINGS IN THE RAIN.

ALLĀH mentions HIS innumerable blessings to HIS servants,

وَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۢ بِقَدَرٍ
And WE sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount,

meaning, according to what is needed, not so much that it damages the lands and buildings, and not so little to be insufficient for crops and fruits, but whatever is needed for irrigation, drinking and other benefits. If there is a land that needs a lot of water for its irrigation but its fertile soil would be carried away if rain fell on it, then ALLĀH sends water to it from another land, as in the case of Egypt, which is said to be a barren land. ALLĀH sends the water of the Nile to it, which brings red soil from Ethiopia when it rains there. The water brings the red soil which is used to irrigate the land of Egypt, and whatever of it is deposited is used for agriculture, because the land of Egypt is infertile, and most of it is sand. Glory be to the Subtle One, the All-Knowing, the Most Merciful, the Forgiving.

فَأَسْكَنَّاهُ فِى الاٌّرْضِ
and WE gave it lodging in the earth,

means, 'when the water comes down from the clouds, WE cause it to settle in the earth, and WE cause the earth to absorb it and the seeds etc. in the earth to be nourished by it.'

وَإِنَّا عَلَى ذَهَابٍ بِهِ لَقَـدِرُونَ
and verily, WE are able to take it away.

means, 'if WE wanted to cause it not to rain, WE could do so;

if WE wanted to divert it towards the wilderness and wastelands, WE could do so;

if WE wanted to make it salty so that you could not benefit from it for drinking or irrigation, WE could do so;

if WE wanted to cause it not to be absorbed by the earth, but to remain on the surface, WE could do so;

if WE wanted to make it go deep underground where you would not be able to reach it and you could not benefit from it, WE could do so.'

But by HIS grace and mercy, HE causes sweet, fresh water to fall on you from the clouds, then it settles in the earth and forms springs and rivers, and you use it to irrigate your crops and fruits, and you drink it and give it to your livestock and cattle, and you bathe and purify yourselves with it. To HIM is due the praise and thanks.

VIRTUES OF VOLUNTARY DEEDS

ALLĀH says: "And whoever does good voluntarily, then verily, ALLĀH is All-Recogniser, All-Knower." {Al-Baqarah || Verse 158}

"But whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him." {Al-Baqarah || Verse 184}

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, ALLĀH says: "My servant draws not near to ME with anything more loved by ME than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and MY servant keeps on coming closer to ME through performing Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him." {Al-Bukhārī #6502}

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said, 'I heard ALLĀH's Messenger (ﷺ) say: "The first of his deeds for which a person will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayer. If it is sound then he will have succeeded but if it is not sound then he will be lost and doomed. If anything is lacking from his obligatory prayers, the Lord will say: 'Look and see whether MY slave has any voluntary (prayers),' and the shortfall from his obligatory prayers will be made up from that. Then all his deeds will be dealt with in like manner." {Al-Tirmidhi #413}

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever prays twelve ˹voluntary˺ rak’ahs each day and night, a house will be built for him in Paradise because of them.” {Muslim #728}

Shaykh Abdur-Rahman As-Sa'di (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "This indicates that the more a person does of acts of obedience, the more he increases in goodness, spiritual development, and status before ALLĀH, because of the increase in his faith" {Taysir al-Karīm ar-Rahman}

TEN WAYS BY WHICH THE   TONGUE IS MISUSED

4⃣. As-sukhriya wal istihzaa’ (Mocking and laughing at others)

As-sukhriya means to say something which degrades someone and puts them down. It could be verbal or a subtle indication or could even be an imitation. The aim is to ridicule and make others laugh at the person.

People who speak ill of others are usually those whose upbringing has not been up to the mark, and who have not learnt proper social manners. They are not perhaps, aware that all human beings are honored and equal in ALLĀH's sight except through piety, and no one has the right to humiliate or hurt another. They also forget that it is quite possible, that those whom they ridicule may be better people than themselves, because of their good qualities. ALLĀH said:

“O Believers! Let not a people ridicule ˹another˺ people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule ˹other˺ women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by ˹offensive˺ nicknames.”
{Al-Hujurāt || Verse 11}

Commenting on this verse, Imām al-Qurtubi  (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "In general, no one should dare to ridicule another person even if that person was shabby, handicapped or inarticulate, for that person may be more sincere or may have a purer heart than the one who is not shabby or handicapped or inarticulate. In this case, ridiculing such a person would be despising someone whom ALLĀH has honored." {Tafsi‌r Qurtubi}

The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade expressing pleasure at the misfortune of a Muslim brother when he said: "Do not express pleasure at the misfortune of a brother lest ALLĀH should bestow mercy upon him and make you suffer from a misfortune." {Sunan al-Tirmidhī #2506}.

Mocking others is a disease and like all diseases, it is an unnatural twist of human nature.  It needs a cure. That can only happen when the one mocking realizes the seriousness of his actions and questions his motives. Scholars have compared mocking others to putting a knife through their soul and murdering their morale and confidence. Just as doing that to the body would be deemed extremely serious, such assaults on the soul must also not be taken lightly.

Only those whose souls are impure because of arrogance and pride mock others. They endeavor to hurt others because of the feeling of superiority that runs in their diseased veins. Shaytān ridiculed Ādam (peace be upon him) and said, “I am better than him” and so he became a loser. Had he thought carefully of the characteristics of Ādam (peace be upon him) he would have realized that Ādam was superior to him.

May ALLĀH protect us from being arrogant towards others and ignorant of ourselves. Aamīn.

NAVIGATING THROUGH DIFFICULT ECONOMIC CONDITIONS

1⃣ CHOOSE GRATITUDE

Refocus your mindset from complaints about the rising cost of commodities to gratitude, recognizing that all attainments are granted by ALLAH'S permission Alone. Whether a commodity costs $1 or $100, attaining it can only occur with the permission of ALLĀH. The Prophet ﷺ will say after each prayer: "O ALLĀH, there is none who can withhold what YOU give, and none may give what YOU have withheld..."

{Al-Bukhari 1/255}

It's crucial to resist Shaytan's influence, which can obscure our reasoning and lead us into a cycle of ingratitude through complaint. Embracing gratitude fosters contentment and invites further blessings into our lives as ALLĀH promised: "If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more." {Ibrāhim: Verse 7}

2⃣ MAKE THINGS EASY FOR THE PEOPLE

We all have a service or commodity we offer to the people, how much ease are we granting to the people? One of the means of attaining ease is being a source of ease for another. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever brings ease to the one who is in difficulty, Allāh will bring him ease in this world and the Hereafter." {Muslim #2699}

He ﷺ also said, "May ALLĀH have mercy on a man who is lenient when selling, buying, and seeking repayment."
{al-Bukhārī #2076}

3⃣ MAKE DU'A FOR THE LEADERS

It's a very common practice amongst the ignorant to curse the leaders. This is contrary to the practice of the true believers, wanting good for the rulers and supplicating to ALLĀH for them is an important feature of the true believer. It is reported that Al-Fudayl B. ʿAyyād (ALLĀH have mercy on him) said, "If I had one supplication that was going to be answered I would make it for the ruler, for the wellbeing and righteousness of the ruler means wellbeing for the land and its people." {Siyar A’lām al-Nubalā 8/434}

4⃣ RELY ON ALLĀH AND ASK FROM HIM ALONE

Al-Hassan al-Basri (ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "If people called on ALLĀH when put to trial because of their rulers, ALLĀH would relieve their suffering; but instead they resorted to the sword, so they were left to it. And not one day of good did they bring. Then he recited: "And the good word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, for the patience and perseverance they had, and WE destroyed the works of Pharaoh and his people and what they had erected." {Al-A'rāf: 137}

{al-Tafsir #8897}

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, "Verily, after me there will be undue favouritism and matters you will reject." They said, "O Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ, what do you order us to do if we reach that time?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Fulfill the duties placed over you and ask ALLĀH for what belongs to you." {Bukha‌ri‌ #3603 & Muslim #1843}

5⃣ PRUDENT FINANCIAL PLANNING

Practice responsible financial management by budgeting, saving, and avoiding unnecessary expenses. In describing the righteous believers, ALLĀH says in the Qur’an, "And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, justly moderate." {Furqan: Verse 67}

The Prophet ﷺ also said, "Eat, drink, give in charity, and wear nice clothing, but without pride and extravagance. Verily, ALLĀH loves for HIS blessings to be seen upon HIS servants." {Musnad Aḥmad #6656}

May ALLĀH rectify our affairs.

THE VIRTUE OF SENDING PEACE AND BLESSINGS UPON THE PROPHET (ﷺ).

Ubayy bin Ka'b (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: I said: "O Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ), I frequently invoke ALLĀH to elevate your rank. How much of my supplications should I devote to you?''

He said, "You may devote as much as you wish.''

When I suggested a quarter, he said, "Do whatever you wish, but it will be better for you if you increase it.''

I suggested half, and he said, "Do whatever you wish, but it will be better for you if you increase.''

I suggested two-thirds, and he said, "Do whatever you wish but it will be better for you if you increase it.''

I said, "Shall I devote all my supplications invoking ALLĀH to elevate your rank?''

He said, "Then you will be freed from your worries and your sins will be forgiven.''

{At-Tirmidhi #2547}

Ibn ‘Allān al-Bakri (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The reason why one’s concerns will be taken care of if he spends that time sending blessings on the Prophet (ﷺ) is that it involves complying with the command of ALLĀH, may HE be exalted, and remembering and venerating HIM, and venerating HIS Messenger. So in fact the worshipper does not miss out on anything by diverting his time to sending blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ). Rather, by engaging in this great praise of the Prophet he will attain something better than what he had been asking for himself, and in addition to that he will attain the tenfold blessing of ALLĀH and the prayer HIS angels, in addition to what may be added to that of great reward that cannot be matched by any other. What benefits could be greater than these? How could a worshipper attain anything like it, let alone anything more precious than it? How could his du‘aa’ for himself equal any of these unmatchable virtues?"

{Dalīl al-Fālihīn li Turuq Riyādhus-Saliḥīn || 5/6-7}

USEFUL TOPICS IN CHILD EDUCATION WHOSE REWARDS ARE REAPED AT OLD AGE (2)

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) proceeded:

"When teeth start to grow, their gums should be rubbed with butter, and the neck beads should be oiled a lot. Parents must be very cautious, during the teeth growth period, of solid matter, and they should absolutely keep them away from their children, as it may cause the corruption, irregularity or disorder of the teeth.

Parents must not be overburdened by the crying and yelling of their child, particularly when he feels hungry for the breast milk, for he benefits from that crying greatly. It trains the organs, widens the intestines, expands the chest, heats the head, preserves the temper, instigates the instinctive temperature, drives the child's nature to satisfy his curiosity, and pushes away the wastes of the head, such as mucus.

The matters of the child's diapers should not be neglected, even if it was a burden, until his body and organs strengthen, and he can sit on the ground. Then, he can be trained to move and stand up bit by bit until he has the strength to go and do it himself.

The child must be protected from anything that can scare him, such as terrible and loud sounds, horrible scenes and disturbing movements, as they may harm his intellectual capabilities that are weak at this point, which would prevent him from utilizing them when he grows. If he was subjected to such thing, parents must hasten to counter its effects, entertain him with what makes him forget, give him his mother's breast immediately, so that this disturbance goes away and not get imprinted in his memory making it difficult to remove, and he should be cradled until he falls asleep and forgets about it. This matter should not be treated lightly, for to neglect it is to instill panic and fear in his heart, which will cause him to grow up like this, and make it very difficult to get rid of that.

The newborn's state changes upon the growth of his teeth, and it instigates vomiting, fever and bad temper, particularly if it was in wintertime of extreme cold, or in summertime of extreme heat. The best times for teeth growth are in the spring or autumn. The time of its growth is at the age of seven months; it may start growing in the fifth month, and it may also be delayed to the tenth month. Upon its growth, he should be treated gently, be taken to the toilet frequently and be given light amount of food, so as not to fill his stomach causing him to have diarrhea. His head should be bound a band containing what is sufficient for him, such as a wool band containing soft cumin, celery and anise, and his gum should be rubbed with what was previously mentioned."

USEFUL TOPICS IN CHILD EDUCATION WHOSE REWARDS ARE REAPED AT OLD AGE (1)

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) stated:

"The newborn’s breastfeeding should be carried by someone other than his mother, two or three days after his birth, which is better, because of the roughness of her breast milk during that time, unlike the breast milk of she whose job is breastfeeding, All the Arabs care for that, and have their children nursed by Bedouin women, just as the Prophet (ﷺ) was nursed in the clan of Sa‘d.

They should not be carried around until they reach three months of age or more, due to their recent emergence of their mothers’ wombs and their weak bodies.

They should only consume milk until their teeth grow, because of the weakness of their stomachs and their digestive capabilities.

When the teeth grow, the stomach strengthens and then he can eat food. ALLĀH (the Exalted) delayed the growth of teeth to the time when he needs food, in HIS wisdom and kindness, and HIS mercy for the mother and her breast nipples, so that the newborn does not bite them with his teeth.

Food should be gradually introduced to them. The first thing they eat should be tender food. They should be fed hot water soaked bread, milk, and then cooked vegetables, soup devoid of meat, and then very tender meat after being thoroughly chewed or broken to soft pieces.

If they are close to the speaking time, and parents wished to facilitate the process for them, they should rub their tongues with honey and rock salt, because they expel the heavy moistness that hinder speaking. When they start speaking, they should be inspired ‘Laa ilāha illallāh, Muhammad Rasūlullāh (There is no deity worthy of worship except ALLĀH, Muhammad is the Messenger of ALLĀH).’ Let the first thing they hear be the knowledge of ALLĀH (the Exalted) and HIS unity, that HE is above HIS throne, looking at them and hearing them, and that HE is with them (in knowledge) wherever they are."

SHOW FORGIVENESS, ENJOIN GOODNESS, AND IGNORE THE IGNORANT

ALLĀH says:
خُذِ الْعَفْوَ
Show forgiveness

This verse is a comprehensive summary that tells one, in a concise way, how to interact with people in the best manner; he should take people as they appear to be and adopt an easy-going approach, by accepting them as they are, with whatever they have to offer of deeds and characteristics. He should not expect more from them than they are able to do; rather he should appreciate whatever he sees of good words and deeds, and whatever is less than that, and overlook their shortcomings. He should not look down on the minor because he is young, or on one who is lacking in reason for his shortcomings, or on one who is poor because of his poverty. Rather he should treat everyone with kindness and respond kindly to each person as is appropriate to his nature and situation, with an open heart and mind.

وَأْمُرْ بِالْعُرْفِ
enjoin what is good

that is, enjoin all good words, good deeds and good attitudes, addressed to close associates and strangers alike; ensure that whatever reaches people from you is either: teaching knowledge; encouraging good, such as upholding ties of kinship or honouring parents; reconciling people; beneficial advice; sound opinions; help in righteousness and piety; discouraging abhorrent deeds; or guiding to that which will attain some good purpose, be it spiritual or worldly.

وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْجَاهِلِينَ
and turn away from the ignorant.

As it is not possible to avoid the harm of the ignorant, ALLĀH instructs us to turn away from the ignorant one and not to respond to his ignorance; whoever harms you in word or deed, do not harm him in response; do not deprive the one who deprives you; whoever cuts you off, uphold ties with him; and whoever wrongs you, be fair towards him.

LENIENCY AND WISDOM IN DA'WAH

ALLĀH says,

كَذَٰلِكَ كُنتُم مِّن قَبۡلُ فَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ
You were initially like them; then ALLĀH favoured you ˹with Islam˺.

That is, just as HE guided you after you had been astray, HE may also guide others; just as guidance was a gradual process for you, it may also be like that for others. So the one who is perfect should look at how he was before he was perfect, and think about how he should deal with those who are still like that, on the basis of what he knows about how he was before, and he should call them with wisdom and beautiful preaching. This is one of the most effective ways in which he may benefit himself and others.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: A bedouin entered the mosque of the Prophet (ﷺ) while the Prophet was sitting. The man prayed and when finished, he said, “O ALLĀH, have mercy upon me and Muhammad and no one else.” The Prophet (ﷺ) turned to him and he said, “You have restricted something vast.” It was not long before he was urinating in the mosque, so the people rushed to him, but the Prophet said, “Pour a bucket or a tumbler of water over it. You have only been sent to make things easy, and you were not sent to make things difficult.” {Sunan al-Tirmidhī #147}

Mu’aawiyah ibn al-Hakam (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: Whilst I was praying with the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ), a man among the people sneezed and I said: Yarhamukallāh. The people glared at me and I said: May my mother be bereft of me! Why are you staring at me? They started striking their hands on their thighs, and when I realized that they were telling me to be quiet, (I felt angry) but I kept quiet. When the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) had prayed – may my father and mother be sacrificed for him; by ALLĀH I have never seen a better teacher or better teachings before or since; he did not rebuke me, hit me or revile me – he (ﷺ) said: “This prayer is not the right place for any of the people’s speech, rather it is tasbīh, takbīr and recitation of Qur'ān.”  {Muslim #537}

THREE DEEDS WHOSE REWARDS CONTINUE AFTER DEATH

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said,

"When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqatul-Jāriyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a righteous child who prays for him (for the deceased).'' {Muslim}.

{Riyādhus-Saliḥīn || Book 13, Chapter 241, Hadith 1383}

Hafiz Salahudeen Yusuf commented: "His deeds come to an end'' means that he does not any longer receive the return and reward on his actions. But there are three categories of actions on which he receives reward even after his death. First, Sadaqah Jariyah such as building a mosque, or a hospital, or digging a well. As long as people will benefit from these, he will receive a reward for them. Second, "knowledge which is beneficial'' means to impart knowledge to others or to propagate knowledge by means of one's books. As long as this medium of teaching will continue and his books will be studied and people will benefit from them, he will receive a reward for it. Third, virtuous decedants. Training of children on the right lines is essential so that after a person's death they continue to pray for him. The prayer of children in favour of parents is highly useful." {Sharḥ Riyādhus-Saliḥīn}

Sheikh Ibn al-Uthaymīn said:
"Consider the statement of the Prophet (ﷺ) stated: “A virtuous child who prays for him.” He did not say, A righteous child who observes Salat, recites the Qur’an, give in charity or fast for him.

No, He didn’t say this even though all of them are righteous deeds; rather, he (ﷺ) said, "A righteous child who prays for him”. This is evidence that supplicating for ones father, mother, paternal and maternal grandparents is better than giving charity, performing the Salat and fasting on their behalf. This is because it is not possible for the Prophet (ﷺ) to direct his Ummah except to that which he knows is best for them. Every Prophet (ﷺ) sent by ALLĀH guided his Ummah towards what he knows to be the best for them. If the Messenger (ﷺ) had known that your giving charity on behalf of your father and mother is better than supplication, he would have said charity rather than supplication. So since he refrained from mentioning charity, fasting, Salat, recitation of the Qur’an in a state of discussing deeds, he would not have left these actions to mention supplication. Then, we know with certainty, with no doubt, that supplication is better than the other good deeds." {Sharh Riyādhus-Saliḥīn}

EVERY PERSON CARRIES HIS OWN BURDEN

ALLĀH said,

وَلَا تَكْسِبُ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ إِلاَّ عَلَيْهَا وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى
No person earns any ˹sin˺ except against himself, and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another.

thus emphasizing ALLĀH's reckoning, decision and justice that will occur on the Day of Resurrection. The souls will only be recompensed for their deeds, good for good and evil for evil. No person shall carry the burden of another person, a fact that indicates ALLĀH's perfect justice.

ALLĀH said in other Ayat,

وَإِن تَدْعُ مُثْقَلَةٌ إِلَى حِمْلِهَا لَا يُحْمَلْ مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ وَلَوْ كَانَ ذَا قُرْبَى
And if one heavily laden calls another to ˹bear˺ his load, nothing of it will be lifted even though he be near of kin.
(35:18)

and,

فَلَا يَخَافُ ظُلْماً وَلَا هَضْماً
Then he will have no fear of injustice, nor of any curtailment ˹of his reward˺.
(20:112)

Scholars of Tafsir commented, "No person will be wronged by carrying the evil deeds of another person, nor will his own good deeds be curtailed or decreased."

ALLĀH also said;

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَة إِلاَّ أَصْحَـبَ الْيَمِينِ
Every person is a pledge for what he has earned. Except those on the Right.
(74:38-39)

meaning, every person will be tied to his evil deeds. But, for those on the right -- the believers -- the blessing of their good works will benefit their offspring and relatives, as well.

ALLĀH said in Surah At-Tur,

And those who believe and whose offspring follow them in faith, to them shall We join their offspring, and WE shall not decrease the reward of their deeds in anything.
(52:21)

meaning, WE shall elevate their offspring to their high grades in Paradise, even though the deeds of the offspring were less righteous, since they shared faith with them in its general form.

ALLĀH says, WE did not decrease the grades of these righteous believers so that those (their offspring and relatives) who have lesser grades, can share the same grades as them. Rather ALLĀH elevated the lesser believers to the grades of their parents by the blessing of their parents' good works, by HIS favor and bounty. ALLĀH said next (in Surah At-Tur),

كُلُّ امْرِىءٍ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهَينٌ
Every person is a pledge for that which he has earned.
(52:21),

meaning, of evil.

THE COMMAND TO STICK TO THE PATH OF ALLĀH

ALLĀH says: "ALLĀH wants to accept your repentance, but those who follow their desires wish to see you deviate entirely ˹from ALLĀH’s Way˺." {An-Nisā || Verse 27}

Ibn Mas’ud (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) drew a line in the sand with his hand and he said, “This is the straight path of ALLĀH.” Then, the Prophet drew lines to the right and left, saying, “These are other paths, and there is no path among them but that a devil is upon it calling to its way.” Then, the Prophet recited the verse, “Verily, this is the straight path, so follow it and do not follow other ways.” (6:153). {Musnad Aḥmad #4437}

Dr. Saleh As-Saleh (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "Those who examined the Qur'ān and Islām found a complete code for life that requires man to fulfil the purpose of his existence on earth. ALLĀH does not want man to be enslaved to any false deity: nature, drugs, lust, money, other men or women, desire, or sex. This holds true for Muslims and non Muslims. HE gives the proofs that HE Alone is the One Who can deliver man to free himself from the slavery to any form of creation and to turn to his Creator Alone. HE is the First, nothing before HIM. HE is the Last, everything ends except HIM. HE is Most High, nothing above HIM." {The Purpose of creation and the return to the creator || Page 3}

Sometimes, in order to achieve happiness, people attempt to follow complicated paths; they fail to see the easier path that is Islām. The key to happiness is knowing and worshipping ALLĀH. When one worships and remembers the Creator as HE should be worshipped and remembered, happiness can be observed all around us, at any given moment. The guidelines provided by Islām allow us, imperfect humans, to seek happiness in this world. The key to being happy in this world and the next is seeking the pleasure of ALLĀH, and worshipping HIM, without associating partners with HIM.

ALLĀH'S MERCY TO THE BELIEVERS

ALLĀH says:

وَكَانَ بِالْمُوْمِنِينَ رَحِيمًا
And HE is Ever Most Merciful to the believers.

That is, by HIS mercy and kindness towards the believers, by means of HIS blessings and praise for them, and the prayer and supplication of HIS angels. HE brings them forth from the dark depths of sin and ignorance to the light of faith, guidance, knowledge and good deeds. This is the greatest blessing that He bestows upon HIS obedient slaves, which should make them be grateful and remember ALLĀH a great deal, for HE has shown kindness and mercy to them, and HE causes the bearers of HIS Throne, the best of the angels, and those who are around the Throne, to glorify and praise their Lord and pray for forgiveness for those who believe, so they say: "Our Lord, YOU encompass all things in YOUR mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who repent and follow YOUR path, and protect them from the punishment of the blazing fire. OUR Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual abode which YOU have promised them, and [admit] the righteous among their forebears, their spouses and their offspring. Verily, YOU are the Almighty, the Most Wise. And protect them from the evil consequences [of their sins], for whomever YOU protect from evil consequences on that day, YOU will indeed have bestowed mercy upon him, and that is the supreme triumph."(40: 7-9)

This is the mercy and blessing that HE bestows upon them in this world.

As for HIS mercy towards them in the hereafter, it is the greatest of mercy and the best reward, namely attaining the pleasure and greeting of their Lord, listening to HIS noble words, gazing upon HIS beautiful Countenance, and attaining immense rewards of which no one knows the extent except those to whom HE gives them.

TEN WAYS BY WHICH THE   TONGUE IS MISUSED

3⃣. Al-Kathib (Lying)

Al-Kathib is anything spoken or written that is totally or partially baseless, unreal, made-up, distorted or exaggerated. So, anything that is untrue and deliberately intended to mislead another person is a lie. Lying is one of the characteristics of the hypocrites, and it is a blameworthy trait which encourages one to commit evil and prevents one from doing good. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Beware of lying. Verily, lying leads to o Al-Fajur (i.e. wickedness, evil-doing), and al-Fajur leads to the Hellfire. A man may keep on telling lies till he is written before ALLĀH, a liar." {al-Bukhārī #6094, Muslim #2607}

Lying indeed does lead to wickedness, evil-doing, corruption, deceit and many more. For example, just take a look at how many politicians across the world have been elected as pillars of trust by the denizens of their states only to be hauled off to jail towards the end of their term due to corruption and blatant lying. They lied to get elected and those lies snowballed into other vices like misappropriating government funds or engaging in illicit deeds.

Sometimes, an individual lies without even meaning to do it and it would, in reality, be recorded as a lie against him. It was narrated by Abdullalāh ibn Amir (may ALLĀH be pleased with him): “My mother called me one day when the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) was sitting in our house. She said: Come here and I shall give you something. The Messenger of ALLAAH (ﷺ) asked her: "What did you intend to give him?" She replied: "I intended to give him some dates." The Messenger of ALLAAH (ﷺ) said: "If you were not to give him anything, a lie would be recorded against you." {Abū Dāwūd #4991}.

Someone might tell a lie to get a better job. Isn't it routine for many job seekers to embellish their CVs just a bit to get noticed? This type of lie might land a person a coveted job but it also might make someone else, who has the proper credentials, lose out on the position simply because they have been more truthful.

Safwaan bin Sulaim narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) was asked, “Can a believer be a coward? He (ﷺ) said, “Yes, he can be coward." Then it was asked whether a believer could be a miser? He replied, “Yes, he can be a miser”, it was then asked whether a believer could be a liar? He replied, “No, a believer cannot be a liar.” {Muwatta Malik || Book 56, Hadith 19}

This Hadith mentions that a believer can be a coward, he can be a miser but he cannot be a liar, which indicates that lying is a great risk to the Muslim's belief, it is a must for us to save our faith and to save our faith, we must prevent ourselves from lying. We need to present ourselves as slogans of truth, the followers of the true religion, the undoubtable Qur’ān and Ummah of a Prophet (ﷺ), who was declared the truthful one even by the infidels of Makkah.

There are, however, a few choice instances where lying is acceptable according to the sharee’ah. The reason they are acceptable is not to cheat or be deceptive with others but rather as a benefit and sometimes even a saving grace.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Lying is not permitted except in three cases: a man speaking to his wife to make her happy; lying in times of war; and lying in order to reconcile between people.” {Tirmidhi, 1939]. It is very important that you read the explanation of this Hadith here.

Even in these instances where lies are permissible, it is advisable not to lie. Adopt a strategy by using statements that have multiple meanings and could serve the purpose of the demand.

In conclusion, ALLĀH said:

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی مَنۡ هُوَ مُسۡرِفࣱ كَذَّاب
Indeed ALLĀH does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.” {Ghāfir || Verse 28}.

Telling lies is a great and grievous sin, we must therefore, at all costs, abstain from uttering such things that will be to our detriment in this world and hereafter.

UNDESIRABILITY OF SEEKING LEADERSHIP

ALLĀH says: "And WE made from among them leaders guiding by OUR command when they were patient and ˹when˺ they were certain of OUR signs." {Al-Naml || Verse 24}

"Their prophet told them, “ALLĀH has appointed Saul to be your king.” They said, “How can he be our king when some of us are more deserving of kingship than he, and he has not been blessed with vast riches?” He replied, “ALLĀH has chosen him over you and blessed him with knowledge and stature. ALLĀH grants kingship to whoever HE wills. And ALLĀH is All-Bountiful, All-Knowing.” {Al-Baqarah || Verse 247}

Abdur Rahman ibn Samurah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said to me, “O Abdur Rahman, do not ask for authority! If it is given to you at your request, you will be held fully responsible for it. If it is given to you without your request, you will be helped by ALLĀH in it.” {al-Bukhārī #7146, Muslim #1652}

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Verily, you may earnestly desire a position of leadership but you will regret it on the Day of Resurrection.” {al-Bukhārī #6729}

Abu Umamah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “No man is given authority over ten people or more but that he will come to ALLĀH on the Day of Resurrection with his hands in shackles up to his neck. His freedom is his righteousness, or his imprisonment is his sin. The first of it is blame, the middle of it is regret, and the last of it is disgrace on the Day of Resurrection.” {Musnad Aḥmad #22300}

Hafiz Salahudeen Yusuf said: "This Hadith urges people, particularly the incapable ones, to shed off the ambition to achieve rulership and power. It is feared that owing to their lack of talent they will mismanage the task which will be assigned to them. This will render them guilty with ALLĀH. The Prophet (ﷺ) dissuades such people from accepting any government portfolio as in this way they will remain safe and trouble-free. Yet, if a deserving person gets a job of high responsibility, he should do his utmost to do full justice to it, so that he may be spared remorse on the Day of Resurrection." {Sharh Riyādhus-Saliḥīn}

One of our teachers (may ALLĀH preserve them upon goodness) once said, "A person in a position of authority may not receive praise or reward for doing their job—such as building schools, hospitals, and roads—since that is part of their responsibilities. However, they will definitely be held accountable and punished if they fail to fulfill those duties."

THE COMMAND TO OBSERVE JUSTICE

ALLĀH says: "O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for ALLĀH, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, ALLĀH is more worthy of both. So follow not ˹personal˺ inclination, lest you not be just." {An-Nisā || Verse 135}

Aisha (may ALLĀH be pleased with her) reported: The Quraysh had been anxious about a woman who had committed theft and they said, “Who will speak to the Messenger of ALLĀH about her?” Some said, “Who would dare to but Usama, one beloved by the Messenger of ALLĀH?” Thus, Usama spoke to him and the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, “Do you intercede regarding a punishment prescribed by ALLĀH?” The Prophet then stood up and addressed the people, saying, “O people, those who came before you were destroyed because if a person of high status committed theft among them, they would spare him, but if a person of lower status committed theft, they would apply the punishment upon him. By ALLĀH, if Fatima the daughter of Muhammad were to steal, I would have cut off her hand.” {Muslim 1688}

It was narrated that An-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: My father took me to the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) and said: “O Messenger of ALLĀH, bear witness that I have given such and such of my wealth to An-Nu'man.” He said: “Did you give to all your children the same as you have given to An-Nu'man?” He said: “No.” He said: “Let someone else bear witness to that for you.” Then he said: “Would you not like all your children to honour you equally?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Then no (I will not bear witness to injustice).” {Muslim #3059}

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "ALLĀH the Exalted has made clear in his law (sharia) that the objective is the establishment of justice between HIS servants and fairness among the people, so whichever path leads to justice and fairness is part of the religion and can never oppose it." {al-Ṭuruq al-H‌ikmīya || Page 13}

DESCRIPTION OF THE QUR'ĀN

ALLĀH says,

ٱللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡحَدِيثِ كِتَٰبًا مُّتَشَٰبِهًا مَّثَانِىَ
ALLĀH has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration.

Here ALLĀH speaks of HIS Book that HE sent down, telling us that it is "the best statement" that is, the best of all messages. The best of speech is the word of ALLĀH, and the best of the divinely revealed Books is this Qur’an. As it is the best, thus it is known that its wordings are the most eloquent and clear, and its meanings are the most sublime, because it is the best of messages in its wording and meaning; it is consistent and harmonious in its beauty and is not contradictory in any way whatsoever, to the point that the more a person reflects on it and ponders it, he will see of its harmonious nature - even in some of its ambiguous verses - that which would dazzle those who reflect, and he will be certain that it can only have come from One Who is Most Wise, All-Knowing.

"wherein is reiteration" that is, its stories and rulings, and the descriptions of good people and evil people, are repeated, and the names and attributes of ALLĀH are repeated in it. This is a manifestation of its majestic and beautiful nature, for ALLĀH knows how much people need its meanings and ideas to purify their hearts and perfect their character. These meanings and ideas are, for people’s hearts, like water for trees; the less frequently trees are watered, the more they are damaged and they may even be destroyed, but the more frequently they are watered, the better they are and the more beneficial fruit they may bear. In like manner, the heart constantly needs to be reminded of the meanings and ideas in the word of ALLĀH, but if a certain concept were to be mentioned only one time in the entire Qur’an, it would not have a strong impact and would not lead to any results.

Hence in this commentary I have followed the same methodology, emulating the example of that on which it is a commentary. You will not find instructions to go back and check something that has already been discussed; rather every time a concept is mentioned, you will find it explained in full detail, without taking into account previous discussions of similar concepts, even though in some places the idea may be discussed in greater detail than others, pointing to more benefits. Similarly, the reader of the Qur’ān should reflect on its meanings and should not omit to reflect on the meanings of all verses, (even if the meaning is repeated), because that is a means of attaining much good and many benefits.

TIMES SPENT IN DISOBEDIENCE TO ALLĀH CAN BE BROUGHT BACK FOR AMENDMENT

"Whatever of your time has passed in disobedience to ALLĀH, it is possible for you to bring it back ˹and amend it˺. And it has been said, 'Time is like a sword, if you don't cut it, it will cut you.' And this is correct wisdom save that ALLĀH has excepted the repenters from this. For whatever time they have wasted in committing zinā, even murder, in fact, even shirk - then whoever repents from them will find his scroll ˹of deeds˺ not just white and plain ˹free of those evils˺ but good deeds will have been written on it in replacement of those evil deeds, as if his time had been adorned with them. And nothing is impossible for ALLĀH, HE is the One who said:

"...except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them ALLĀH will replace their sins with good deeds. And ever is ALLĀH Forgiving and Merciful." (25:70).
