WELCOMING THE MONTH OF RAMADĀN

The poet says:

O seeker of goodness, this is a month of honour

Approach with sincerity, may ALLĀH reward you with goodness

Approach with generosity and do not withhold extra deeds

And make your forehead a sign of prostration

Perform obligatory acts as much as you will not be harmed by them

Be generous and recite the Qur’an therein

Guard your tongue when you speak amid chatter

Do not break your fast with words forgetfully

Be truthful in seeking wealth and give some of what you have been given

Your wealth will not decrease if you spend it in goodness.

We ask ALLĀH to help us to observe HIS commands during this blessed month and beyond. Aamīn.

THE VIRTUE OF RAMADĀN AND THE REVELATION OF THE QUR'AN IN IT

ALLĀH says;

Ramadān is the month in which the Qur’an was sent down.

That is, the fast that you are enjoined to observe is the month of Ramadān, the great month in which ALLĀH bestowed the great blessing upon you, namely the Holy Qur’an, which contains guidance to that which is in your best interests in both religious and worldly affairs, explains the truth in the clearest manner, and distinguishes between truth and falsehood, guidance and misguidance, those who are destined for paradise and those who are destined for hell. So it should come as no surprise that a month of such blessings that ALLĀH bestowed upon you should be a season of worship in which fasting is enjoined.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

#sadi #baqarah (2:185)

Wathila ibn al-Asqa’ reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said, "The Suhuf of Ibrahim were revealed during the first night of Ramadān. The Torah was revealed during the sixth night of Ramadān. The Injil was revealed during the thirteenth night of Ramadān. ALLĀH revealed the Qur'an on the twenty-fourth night of Ramadān." {Musnad Ahmad #16984}

DO NOT FAST DAYS BEFORE RAMADĀN, UNLESS A ROUTINE

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said, "Do not anticipate Ramadān by fasting one or two days before it begins, unless it is part of a man’s fasting routine, so let him fast that day." {Bukhari and Muslim}

Ammar ibn Yasir said: "Whoever fasts on the day concerning which there is doubt has disobeyed Abu’l-Qasim ﷺ." {At-Tirmidhi #686 and An-Nasa'i #2188}

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin said in his commentary on the hadith: Do not anticipate Ramadān by fasting one or two days before it begins…":

"The scholars differed concerning this prohibition and whether it meant that this is haram or makruh. The correct view is that it means it is haram, especially on the day of doubt." {Sharḥ Riyadhus-Saliḥīn (3/394)}

The day of doubt is the thirtieth of Sha'bān if the new moon cannot be seen because of clouds etc. It is called the day of doubt because it could be the thirtieth of Sha’bān, or it could be the first day of Ramadān.

FASTING IN RAMADĀN IS OBLIGATORY; PRAYING 5 TIMES A DAY EVERY DAY IS ALSO OBLIGATORY

Prayer is the second most important pillar of Islam and the most regular compulsory action in a Muslim's life. It is the one act that must be fulfilled at least five times a day, regardless of the circumstance. In fact, ALLĀH did not even exempt the Muslims from praying during the battle! HE says: "And when you (O Prophet) are among them and lead them in prayer, let a group of them stand ˹in prayer˺ with you and let them carry their arms." (4:102)

Despite the importance of prayer, it is a sad fact that many Muslims do not offer prayer or fulfil the conditions of prayer.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The first thing for which a person will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayer. If it is sound, he will be successful, and if it is lacking in any way, he will be doomed." {An-Nasa'i #465}

This Hadith points to the fact that there is no success for the one who does not establish the prayer.

EVALUATE YOUR PREVIOUS RAMADĀN AND SET GOALS FOR THIS YEAR'S

Two days of a believer's life should not be the same, just like each day should be better than the previous one. Similarly, two Ramadāns should not be alike.

The believers are racing toward Paradise, as ALLĀH says: "Race with one another in hastening towards forgiveness from your Lord, and Paradise..." (57:21)

They are always trying to have today better than yesterday.

They want to keep increasing in piety and good deeds.

They try to devote more time, energy, and resources with each passing day to win ALLĀH’s pleasure.

They want their inner self to be better today than it was yesterday and their tomorrow to be better than today.

They don’t want to repeat their mistakes; they learn from their experiences and try to purify their hearts and their intentions to make them better all the time.

Thus, a believer's two days are not equal, similarly, two Ramadāns should not be equal.

BENEFIT 14: REGARDING MENSTRUATION DURING RAMADĀN

ISSUES RELATED TO MENSTRUATION AND FASTING (¹)

If she (the woman) becomes pure (finishes menstruation) during the day: She continues her non-fasting state, meaning she can eat and drink. If her husband returns from travel while not fasting, he is allowed to have marital relations with her. She is not required to abstain for the rest of the day with the intention of fasting.

● If she becomes pure before Fajr: If she intends to fast, her fast is valid even if she delays taking a ritual bath (ghusl) until after Fajr. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars.

● Can a Woman Take Medication to Stop Menstruation in Ramadān?

Menstruation is something that ALLĀH has decreed for the daughters of Adam. Women during the time of the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ did not go to such lengths to complete the fast of Ramadān, and therefore, it is not recommended.

However, if she takes it—and it does not harm her—then there is no problem. If she takes it and her bleeding stops, she takes the ruling of a pure woman; she fasts, and she does not need to make up those fasts. And ALLĀH knows best.

● A woman experiencing istihādah (irregular bleeding) does not refrain from fasting: or prayer; rather, both are obligatory upon her by consensus of the scholars.

THERE'S NO GOOD EXCEPT IN FOLLOWING THE PROPHET (ﷺ) AND THE COMPANIONS

Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"From Abul Aaliyah who said: We were with Ibn Umar on a journey and we stopped at a place called Dhil Majāz that had water which belonged to some bedouin.

The time of prayer came in and the Mu'adhin of Ibn Umar called the Adhan then Ibn Umar began the prayer.

A man stood up high upon a saddle which belonged to some of the people and he called out at the top of his voice: 'The prayer O people who own the water! The prayer!'

Ibn Umar began saying 'Subhana ALLĀH in his prayer until the prayer had ended.

Ibn Umar asked: 'Who is the person shouting with the prayer?

The people said: 'It was Abu Aamir, O Abu AbdurRahman!'

Ibn Umar said to him: 'You did not pray or recite! Which of your Shaytān ordered you to do this!'

Is not what is with ALLĀH and the Sunnah of HIS Prophet (ﷺ) and the righteous people dispense and relieve you from this Bid'ah (innovation) of yours.

Indeed the people do not innovate a Bid'ah and view it as good except that they kill off a Sunnah.'

A man from the people said: 'He did not intend except good O Abu AbdurRahman!'

Ibn Umar said: 'If he had intended good then he would not have desired for his-self other than the Sunnah of his Prophet and the righteous people from ALLĀH's worshippers.'"

PUNISHMENT FOR BEING UNJUST BETWEEN WIVES

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

"If a man has two wives and he is not just between them, he will come on the Day of Resurrection with one of his sides collapsed." {Ibn Mājah}

EXPLANATION:
This Hadīth shows that it is mandatory to divide one's time among one's wives and that favoring one of them over the other is forbidden. The punishment for the man who treats his wives unjustly in this respect is that ALLĀH will disclose him on the Day of Resurrection. He will come to the gathering place with one of his sides hanging down. This is an appropriate recompense, for one reaps what he sows. It is obligatory to treat one's wives fairly in matters that are controllable such as financial support, staying overnight, good treatment, and the like. However, this is not obligatory in uncontrollable matters such as love and inclination of the heart, since they are beyond one's power.

THE REWARD OF THE MUHAJIRIN

ALLĀH tells:

And as for those who emigrated for the cause of ALLĀH, after they had been wronged,

ALLĀH tells us about the reward of those who migrated for HIS sake, seeking HIS pleasure, those who left their homeland behind, brothers and friends, hoping for the reward of ALLĀH.

This may have been revealed concerning those who migrated to Ethiopia, those whose persecution at the hands of their own people in Makkah was so extreme that they left them and went to Ethiopia so that they would be able to worship their Lord.

Among the most prominent of these migrants were Uthman bin Affan and his wife Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of ALLĀH, Jafar bin Abi Talib, the cousin of the Messenger, and Abu Salamah bin Abdul-Asad, among a group of almost eighty sincere and faithful men and women, may ALLĀH be pleased with them. ALLĀH promised them a great reward in this world and the next.

ALLĀH said:

WE will certainly give them good residence in this world,

Ibn Abbas, Ash-Sha'bi and Qatadah said: ˹this means˺ "Al-Madinah."

It was also said that; it meant "good provision."

This was the opinion of Mujahid.

There is no contradiction between these two opinions, for they left their homes and wealth, but ALLĀH compensated them with something better in this world.

Whoever gives up something for the sake of ALLĀH, ALLĀH compensates him with something that is better for him than that, and this is what happened. HE gave them power throughout the land and caused them to rule over the people, so they became governors and rulers, and each of them became a leader of the pious.

ALLĀH tells us that HIS reward for the Muhajirin in the Hereafter is greater than that which HE gave them in this world, as HE says:

وَلَاَجْرُ الاخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ
but indeed the reward of the Hereafter will be greater,

meaning, greater than that which WE have given you in this world.

if they but knew!

means, if those who stayed behind and did not migrate with them only knew what ALLĀH prepared for those who obeyed HIM and followed HIS Messenger.

Then ALLĀH describes them as:

الَّذِينَ صَبَرُواْ وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
those who remained patient, and put their trust in their Lord.

meaning, they bore their people's persecution with patience, putting their trust in ALLĀH Who made their end good in this world and the Hereafter.

RAMADĀN REFLECTIONS: DAY 1⃣

WHY IS THE DESIRE FOR PLEASURE DEEPLY INGRAINED IN HUMMANS

A question that is often asked is why the world and its desires have been glamorized for human beings. If ALLĀH intended for us to attain perfection by avoiding worldly pleasures, why is the desire for these pleasures so deeply ingrained in humans, prompting them to struggle against it?

The answer to this is simple. There would be no merit in staying away from something for which there was no internal inclination. When there is a struggle and challenge there can be a victory. Therefore, true success for a human being lies in overcoming the love of materialism and utilizing what the world offers to achieve success in the Hereafter, as ALLĀH states elsewhere:

"But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires and lusts. Verily, Paradise will be his abode." (79:40-41)

DO NOT BEGIN FASTING UNTIL THE CRESCENT IS SIGHTED

ALLĀH says: "So whoever sights ˹the crescent of˺ the month, let him fast it." {Al-Baqarah || Verse 185}

Ibn Umar (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadān), and do not give up fasting till you see the crescent (of Shawwal), but if the sky is overcast (if you cannot see it), then act on estimation (i.e. count Sha'ban as 30 days)."

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said, "If the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the term as thirty days." {al-Bukha‌ri‌ #1807, Muslim #1080}

Ibn ‘Umar said: "The people went out to sight the new moon and I told the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) that I had seen it, so he fasted and told the people to fast." {Abu Dāwūd #2342}

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "We are an unlettered Ummah, we do not use astronomical counting or computation. The month is like this, and this, and this," he did three times, showing it as twenty-nine. {An Nasā'i #2140}

Sheikh Ibn Bāz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The Hadiths concerning this matter are numerous and all of them prove that it is obligatory to act according to the sighting or completion of the number of days (in the month as 30) when there is no sighting. Likewise they prove that it is not permissible to rely on calculations for this. Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taimiyyah mentioned that it is the consensus of the people of knowledge that it is not permissible to rely upon calculations to confirm the new moons. This is the truth concerning which there is no doubt. And ALLĀH is the Giver of success."  {Fatāwa Islāmiyah (3/222-224)}

It should be noted that what is obligatory is to fast when the sighting of the moon is confirmed, even if it is seen by only one trustworthy Muslim, as the Prophet (ﷺ) issued orders to fast when a Bedouin testified that he had seen the new moon. Interpreting the verse (2:185) or hadith "Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadān)" as meaning that no individual should fast until he sees the new moon for himself is incorrect, because the hadīth is telling everyone to fast when the sighting is confirmed, even if only one trustworthy Muslim sees the new moon. Evidence that the sighting of the new moon by one trustworthy, reliable Muslim is sufficient for fasting to be obligatory on all the people is the hadith of Ibn 'Umar in Abu Dāwūd #2342 (mentioned above)

ALLĀH knows best.

VOLUNTARY PRAYERS SEPARATED FROM OBLIGATORY PRAYERS

Mu’awiyyah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: "When you perform the Friday prayer, do not pray another prayer until you have spoken or left the mosque. The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) commanded us to do that, to not connect two prayers together unless we have spoken or we have left." {Muslim #883}

Al-Nawawi (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said,

"In this is evidence for what is said by our scholars, that for regular voluntary prayers and others it is recommended to move them from the place where an obligatory prayer was performed to another place. It is best to move them to one’s house, or else he can move to another place in the mosque or elsewhere, to increase the places where he has performed prostration and to distinguish the performance of voluntary prayers from obligatory prayers."

THE COMMAND TO SEEK SHELTER WITH ALLĀH ALONE

ALLĀH says,

So, flee to ALLĀH!

What is meant is to flee from that which ALLĀH hates, both outwardly and inwardly, to that which HE loves, both outwardly and inwardly, fleeing from ignorance to knowledge, from disbelief to faith, from sin to obedience, and from heedlessness to remembrance of ALLĀH.

Whoever does all of that has done all that religion requires of him; he will be spared all that he fears and he will attain all that he seeks.

ALLĀH describes turning to HIM as fleeing, because turning to anyone other than HIM will result in all kinds of fearful outcomes and troubles, whereas turning to HIM leads to all that one loves, security, joy, happiness and triumph.

You would flee from everyone you fear, except ALLĀH; the more you fear HIM, the more you flee to HIM.

Indeed, I am to you from HIM a clear warner.

That is, I am a warner to you of the punishment of ALLĀH, bringing a clear message of warning.

And do not associate with ALLĀH any other god.

This is part of fleeing to ALLĀH; rather this is the basis of fleeing to HIM, for a person to flee from taking any other god among the idols, rivals, graves and so on, things that are worshipped besides ALLĀH, and devoting his worship, fear, hope, supplication and repentance to his Lord alone.

NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR CHILDREN!

Never give up on your children, Never!

Undoubtedly you will face tough times with your children – some will face incredible amounts of difficulty.

However through all the pain, the heart ache, the abandonment, you don't get to give up on them.

You don't get to throw them to the wolves and have them left for dead.

You keep protecting them and supporting them.

There are many examples of children who were set aright only because of the love, Du'as and constant reminders of their parents.

You may face a few months of backlash, maybe a few years, maybe decades, but your constant loving reminders and Du'as will help them when the time is right.

You don't guide anyone, not even your own children.

However, the job at hand is still to convey, and to continue conveying until your last breath. The rest we leave to ALLĀH.

Even in the story of Nūh (peace be upon him), you find him pleading with ALLĀH until the last moments, even until after the death of his son. SubḥānAllāh!

IN WHICH WAY DO OUR LIMBS FAST DURING RAMAḌĀN?

Sheikh Bin Bāz said: "The fasting of the limbs is distancing them from that which ALLĀH had prohibited them from.

• The tongue fasts (refrains) from that which ALLĀH has prohibited it from, for example, backbiting, tale-carrying between people, lying and that which is similar to this.

• The hand fasts (refrains) from that which ALLĀH has prohibited it from, for example, stealing, transgression (oppression), aggression and similar to this.

• Also, the foot keeps away from that which ALLĀH has prohibited it from; so it must not proceed and walk towards that which ALLĀH has prohibited.

• Likewise, the stomach should be safeguarded from eating that which is ḥarām; a person must safeguard his stomach from prohibited food.

• And he safeguards his hearing from listening to that which ALLĀH has prohibited, for example, musical instruments, backbiting, tale-carrying and other than this."

ALLĀH'S PROMISE OF RESPONSE TO DU'A

ALLĀH says: "And your Lord says, Call upon ME; I will respond to you."  {Ghāfir || Verse 60}

"And when MY servants ask you, ˹O Muḥammad˺, concerning ME - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon ME." {Al-Baqarah || Verse 186}

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said: "Call upon ALLĀH, being certain of a response, and know that ALLĀH will not answer a supplication from a negligent and heedless heart." {Al-Tirmidhi #3479}

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, "The servant will continue to have his supplications answered as long as he does not ask for sin or cutting family ties, and he is not impatient." They said, "O Messenger of ALLĀH, what is its impatience?" The Prophet said, "He says: I have supplicated again and again, but I have not seen an answer. He becomes frustrated with that and gives up supplicating." {Muslim #2735}

‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, "There is no Muslim on earth who calls upon ALLĀH in supplication but that ALLĀH will grant it to him or divert some evil away from him, so long as he does not ask for something sinful or to cut off family ties." A man said, "In that case we will ask for more." The Prophet said, "ALLĀH has even more." {Al-Tirmidhī #3573}

Al-Qurtubi (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said al-Mufhim: "The individual should strive hard to do what is required of him, trusting that ALLĀH will accept it and forgive him, because HE has promised that and HE does not break HIS promise. If the individual believes or thinks that ALLĀH will not accept it, and that it will not benefit him, this is despairing of the mercy of ALLĀH, which is a major sin; whoever dies in that state will be left to what he thought, as it says in some versions of the hadith mentioned above: 'So let MY slave think of ME as he wishes.'" {Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi (7/54)}

Ibn al-Jawzi (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "If Shaytan ever whispers to your heart saying, 'How long have you been supplicating but you still see no answer?' Let your answer be, 'I worship HIM with my supplications, while I am confident and certain that my supplications shall be answered. Yet, maybe the answer is postponed to bring forth a goodness that is for my interest for answers come when the time comes. And even if no answer is noted, it suffices the humility and worship I am in.'" {Captured Thoughts || Page 730}

We should continue to call upon ALLĀH and ask of HIM, as HE answers the supplications of those in distress and loves those who are persistent in their Du'as. If someone keeps knocking at the door, it is sure to be opened to them soon.

Our master Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah on Monday, the twelfth of Rabi' al-Awwal. He was the son of Abdullāh and Aminah al-Qurashiyyah. He is the last of the prophets and the messenger of ALLĀH, sent to all people to call them to worship ALLĀH alone and not associate anything with HIM. His father had passed away before his birth and was buried in Madinah, so he was raised by his mother. He ﷺ was breastfed after his mother by Thuwaybah al-Aslamiyyah, then Halimah al-Sa'diyyah. When he was six years old, his mother passed away, and he was taken care of by his foster mother, Umm Ayman. Thereafter, his grandfather took care of him. When he was eight years old, his grandfather passed away, so his uncle Abu Talib took care of him.

At the age of nine, he travelled with his uncle Abu Talib to Syria, where Bahīrā the monk recognized him. At the age of twenty-five, he travelled in trade for Sayyidah Khadijah, and two months after his return, he married her when she was forty years old.

At the age of thirty-five, he participated with the Quraysh in rebuilding the Kaaba and arbitrated among them in placing the Black Stone in its place. He became well-known among his people for his praiseworthy qualities, and they loved and respected him, so they called him "Al-Amīn" (the trustworthy one). ALLĀH protected him from the deeds of ignorance, and he preferred solitude as he approached forty years old. He used to worship in the cave of Hira, following the religion of his grandfather Ibrahim.

REJOICING AT THE COMING OF RAMADĀN

The month of Ramadān creates a feeling of joy and delight in the hearts of believers. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "…There are two joyous occasions for the fasting person; one at the time of breaking his fast and the other when he meets his Lord, for then he will rejoice because of his fasting." {Muslim #1151}

Ramadān is the optimal time for Muslims to relish joy and delight.

How could the believer not rejoice at the coming of Ramadān when a gate of Paradise is opened for him?

How could a believer not rejoice at the coming of Ramadān as he is given a chance for his past and future sins to be forgiven?

How could a believer not rejoice at the coming of Ramadān when he is given a chance to be saved from Hellfire?

How could a believer not rejoice at the coming of Ramadān as the caller proclaims, "O seeker of good, come forward!"?

May ALLĀH make us of those who will reach the blessed month.

REASONS FOR LIMITING TO ONLY ONE WIFE

Shaykh Muhammad Ibn al-Uthaymīn (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:

"Some of the people of knowledge held the opinion that it is better to limit one self to one wife, the reasons they give are:

1⃣. That it is safer for a husband's responsibility for his wife rather than oppressing his other wives.

This is because if a man marries two women or more, then perhaps he may not be able to do justice between them.

2⃣. Also because, limiting one self to one wife is closer to preventing the family from becoming scattered.

This is because if he has more than one wife, the family can become scattered, since he will have children from one woman and also children from the other woman.

Also perhaps there may occur conflict and disunity between the children due to a conflict and disagreement between their mothers, as has been witnessed.

3⃣. Likewise, having just one wife is closer to being able to fulfil the obligation of spending upon her and other matters.

4⃣. It is also easier for a man to take into account justice. Indeed having a consideration for justice is a great matter,  which requires help and aid.

So due to that, we say, limiting to one wife is safer for that person.

However if a person sees in himself that one wife is not sufficient and does not keep him chaste, then indeed we would order him to marry a second, third and fourth wife until he can achieve tranquillity, and keep away from looking at women and have ease for the soul."

NOTHING IS SIMILAR TO FAST IN REWARDS AND IT'S A PROTECTION  FROM HELLFIRE

Abu Umamah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: I said, “O Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ), tell me a deed to do." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Take to fasting, for there is nothing equal to it." {An-Nasa'i #2223}

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever fasts a day in the way of ALLĀH, ALLĀH will make a trench between him and the Hellfire whose distance is like that between the heavens and the earth." {Al-Tirmidhi #1624}

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The reward for acts of worship is tenfold up to seven hundredfold, up to many times more, except fasting, for it is ALLĀH Who will reward for it. What that means is that the reward for it is very great indeed." {Ash-Sharh al-Mumti‘ (6/458)}
