RAMADĀN REFLECTIONS: DAY 5⃣

OVERCOMING DESPAIR AND INGRATITUDE

This verse highlights a weakness in human nature. It reveals our tendencies toward despair and ingratitude, as we often lose hope and focus solely on what we've lost, ignoring the blessing of having it in the first place. This attitude can foster a sense of entitlement, making us forget that ALLĀH is the true Owner of all blessings, giving and taking as HE wills. When the Prophet ﷺ was informed about the death of his daughter's child, he said:

"Whatever ALLĀH takes is for HIM, and whatever HE gives is for HIM and everything has its fixed time. So ˹she should˺ be patient and look for ALLĀH's reward." {Bukhārī #1284}

We must understand that both gaining and losing blessings are tests in this world. They are not necessarily signs of ALLĀH’s pleasure or displeasure but are meant to develop us, refining our souls towards purity and perfection. Therefore, we must accept them with patience and without excessive emotional reaction.

RAMADĀN REFLECTIONS: DAY 4⃣

DESCRIPTION OF THE ANGELS WHO RECORD OUR DEEDS

To emphasize accountability on the Day of Judgment, ALLĀH has appointed angels to record each individual's deeds. These angels possess the following qualities as indicated in the Ayah:

1. Hāfizīn (Guardians/Protectors): Their role extends beyond merely writing good and bad deeds; they also safeguard and preserve them until the Day of Judgment. These deeds will be compiled into a record (kitāb), which every person will read on the Day of Recompense.

2. Kirāman Kātibīn (Noble Recorders): The term kirām (plural of karīm) signifies being free from any form of lowliness. A demonstration of their nobility is that the angels recording deeds during the day keep them confidential from those recording at night, and vice versa, ensuring the person's dignity is maintained.

3. Complete Awareness: These angels are fully aware of all actions, whether performed publicly or in private.

WELCOMING THE MONTH OF RAMADĀN

The poet says:

يَابَاغَيَ الخَيْرِ هَذَا شَهْرُ مَكْرُمَةٍ
O seeker of goodness, this is a month of honour

أقْبِلْ بِصِدْقٍ جَزَاكَ اللهُ إحْسَانَا
Approach with sincerity, may ALLĀH reward you with goodness

أقْبِلْ بجُودٍ وَلاَ تَبْخَلْ بِنَافِلةٍ
Approach with generosity and do not withhold extra deeds

واجْعَلْ جَبِينَكَ بِالسَّجْدَاتِ عِنْوَانَا
And make your forehead a sign of prostration

أعْطِ الفَرَائضَ قدْراً لا تضُرَّ بِهَا
Perform obligatory acts as much as you will not be harmed by them

واصْدَعْ بِخَيْرٍ ورتِّلْ فِيهِ قُرْآنَا
Be generous and recite the Qur’an therein

واحْفَظْ لِسَاناً إذَا مَا قُلتَ عَنْ لَغَطٍ
Guard your tongue when you speak amid chatter

لاَ تجْرَحِ الصَّوْمَ بالألْفَاظِ نِسْيَانَا
Do not break your fast with words forgetfully

وصَدِّقِ المَالَ وابذُلْ بَعْضَ أعْطِيَةٍ
Be truthful in seeking wealth and give some of what you have been given

لنْ ينْقُصَ المَالَ لَوْ أنْفقتَ إحْسَانَا
Your wealth will not decrease if you spend it in goodness.

We ask ALLĀH to help us to observe HIS commands during this blessed month and beyond. Aamīn.

O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those who came before you, that you may become pious.

˹Fast a˺ prescribed number of days. But whoever of you is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍān˺. For those who can only fast with extreme difficulty, compensation can be made by feeding a needy person ˹for every day not fasted˺. But whoever volunteers to give more, it is better for them. And to fast is better for you, if only you knew.

RAMADĀN REFLECTIONS: DAY 1⃣

WHY IS THE DESIRE FOR PLEASURE DEEPLY INGRAINED IN HUMMANS

A question that is often asked is why the world and its desires have been glamorized for human beings. If ALLĀH intended for us to attain perfection by avoiding worldly pleasures, why is the desire for these pleasures so deeply ingrained in humans, prompting them to struggle against it?

The answer to this is simple. There would be no merit in staying away from something for which there was no internal inclination. When there is a struggle and challenge there can be a victory. Therefore, true success for a human being lies in overcoming the love of materialism and utilizing what the world offers to achieve success in the Hereafter, as ALLĀH states elsewhere:

"But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires and lusts. Verily, Paradise will be his abode." (79:40-41)

PROHIBITION OF UNINTERRUPTED FASTING (WISAL)

ALLAH said:

ثُمَّ أَتِمُّواْ الصِّيَامَ إِلَى الَّليْلِ
then complete your Saum (fast) till the nightfall.

This Ayah orders breaking the fast at sunset.

It is recorded in the Two Sahihs that Umar bin Al-Khattab said that ALLĀH's Messenger said: "If the night comes from this direction (the east), and the day departs from that direction (the west), then the fasting person breaks his fast."

It is reported that Sahl bin Sa'd As-Sa'idi narrated that ALLĀH's Messenger said: "The people will retain goodness as long as they hasten in breaking the fast."

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet said: "ALLĀH the Exalted said, 'the dearest among MY servants to ME are those who hasten in breaking the fast the most.'"

At-Tirmidhi recorded this Hadith and said that this Hadith is Hasan Gharib.

There are several authentic Hadiths that prohibit Al-Wisal, which means continuing the fast through the night to the next night, without eating.

Imam Ahmad recorded Abu Hurayrah saying that ALLĀH's Messenger said: "Do not practice Al-Wisal in fasting."

So, they said to him, "But you practice Al-Wisal, O ALLĀH's Messenger!"

The Prophet replied, "I am not like you, I am given food and drink during my sleep by my Lord."

So, when the people refused to stop Al-Wisal, the Prophet fasted two days and two nights (along with those who practiced Wisal) and then they saw the crescent moon (of the month of Shawwal). The Prophet said to them (angrily): "If the crescent had not appeared, I would have made you fast for a longer period."

That was as a punishment for them (when they refused to stop practicing Al-Wisal).

This Hadith is also recorded in the Sahihayn.

The prohibition of Al-Wisal was also mentioned in a number of other narrations. It is a fact that practicing Al-Wisal was one of the special qualities of the Prophet, for he was capable and assisted in his practice of it. It is obvious that the food and drink that the Prophet used to get while practicing Al-Wisal was spiritual and not material, otherwise he would not be practicing Al-Wisal.

We should mention that it is allowed to refrain from breaking the fast from sunset until before dawn (Suhur).

A Hadith narrated by Abu Sa'id Khudri states that ALLĀH's Messenger said: "Do not practice Al-Wisal, but whoever wishes is allowed to practice it until the Suhur."

WISDOM BEHIND THE RECOMMENDATION TO BREAK FAST WITH DATES OR WATER

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When any one of you breaks his fast, let him break his fast with dates for that is a blessing; if there are no dates then with water, for that is a means of purification." {al-Tirmidhi #658}

Ibn al-Qayyim said: "The fact that the Prophet (ﷺ) broke his fast with fresh or dried dates or water is very beneficial to the health, because fasting empties the stomach of food and there is no nourishment to be sent to the different parts of the body. Sweet foods are quickest to be absorbed and processed, especially if they are fresh, so they are more readily digested. If there are no fresh dates, then one should eat dried dates because they are sweet and nourishing. If there are no dried dates then a few sips of water will extinguish the pangs of hunger and the heat of fasting, so that the stomach will be prepared to receive food."

THE OBLIGATION OF FASTING RAMADĀN

ALLĀH said:

فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ
So whoever is present this month, let them fast.

This Ayah requires the healthy persons who witness the beginning of the month, while residing in their land, to fast the month.

This Ayah abrogated the Ayah that allows a choice of fasting or paying the Fidyah. When ALLĀH ordered fasting, HE again mentioned the permission for the ill person and the traveler to break the fast and to fast other days instead as compensation.

ALLĀH said:

وَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number ˹of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasting) must be made up˺ from other days.

This Ayah indicates that ill persons who are unable to fast or fear harm by fasting, and the traveler, are all allowed to break the fast. When one does not fast in this case, he is obliged to fast other days instead.

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

Abdur Rahman ibn Awf reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, "Verily, Ramadān is a month in which ALLĀH Almighty has obligated its fasting. I have instituted for Muslims the practice of prayer at night. Thus, whoever fasts it with faith and expecting reward will be rid of sins like the day he was born from his mother." {Musnad Aḥmad #1688}

THE VIRTUE OF RAMADĀN AND THE REVELATION OF THE QUR'AN IN IT

ALLĀH says;

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِيَ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْانُ
Ramadān is the month in which the Qur’an was sent down.

That is, the fast that you are enjoined to observe is the month of Ramadān, the great month in which ALLĀH bestowed the great blessing upon you, namely the Holy Qur’an, which contains guidance to that which is in your best interests in both religious and worldly affairs, explains the truth in the clearest manner, and distinguishes between truth and falsehood, guidance and misguidance, those who are destined for paradise and those who are destined for hell. So it should come as no surprise that a month of such blessings that ALLĀH bestowed upon you should be a season of worship in which fasting is enjoined.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

#sadi #baqarah (2:185)

Wathila ibn al-Asqa’ reported: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said, "The Suhuf of Ibrahim were revealed during the first night of Ramadān. The Torah was revealed during the sixth night of Ramadān. The Injil was revealed during the thirteenth night of Ramadān. ALLĀH revealed the Qur'an on the twenty-fourth night of Ramadān." {Musnad Ahmad #16984}

THE ORDER TO FAST

ALLĀH said:

O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become pious.

In an address to the believers of this Ummah, ALLĀH ordered them to fast, that is, to abstain from food, drink and sexual activity with the intention of doing so sincerely for ALLĀH the Exalted alone. This is because fasting purifies the souls and cleanses them from the evil that might mix with them and their ill behavior.

ALLĀH mentioned that HE has ordained fasting for Muslims just as HE ordained it for those before them, they being an example for them in that, so they should vigorously perform this obligation more obediently than the previous nations.

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

ALLĀH tells us of the wisdom behind the prescription of fasting, as HE says "that you may become pious".

Fasting is one of the greatest means of developing piety, because it involves obeying the command of ALLĀH and avoiding that which HE has forbidden.

Part of the piety that fasting involves is that the fasting person refrains from that which ALLĀH has forbidden to him of food, drink, intercourse and so on, to which he is naturally inclined, seeking thereby to draw closer to ALLĀH, hoping for HIS reward by giving up these things. This is part of piety. Piety also includes the following:

• The fasting person trains himself to remember that ALLĀH is always watching, so he gives up things that he desires even though they may be available to him, because he knows that ALLĀH is watching him.

• Fasting narrows the pathways of the Shaytan, who flows through the son of Adam like blood. Fasting weakens the Shaytan’s influence and reduces sins.

• The fasting person usually does many acts of worship and obedience, which are characteristics of piety.

• By fasting, the rich man feels the pain of hunger, which makes him inclined to help the poor and destitute. This is also a characteristic of piety.

REWARD FOR PRAYING TARAWĪH WITH THE IMAM UNTIL HE FINISHES

Abu Hurayrah said: "ALLĀH’s Messenger ﷺ used to encourage the people to stand ˹for salah at night˺ during Ramadān, without sternly ordering them. He would say:

'Whoever stands ˹in salah in the nights of˺ Ramadān out of faith and expecting the reward from ALLĀH, he will be forgiven for what has preceded of his sins.'" {Muslim #759}

Therefore, it is essential for the Muslim to be diligent in praying tarawīh with the Imam, to not neglect any part of it, and to not turn away before his Imam - even if the Imam prayed more than eleven or thirteen raka'at - due to the saying of the Prophet (ﷺ):

"Whoever stands ˹in salah˺ with the Imam until he turns away, will have written for him the standing ˹in salah˺ for a whole night." {Abū Dawūd #1375}

The meaning of the turning away of the Imam is: the end of salah and not the leaving of the first Imam - if it is prayed by more than one Imam.

Our master Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah on Monday, the twelfth of Rabi' al-Awwal. He was the son of Abdullāh and Aminah al-Qurashiyyah. He is the last of the prophets and the messenger of ALLĀH, sent to all people to call them to worship ALLĀH alone and not associate anything with HIM. His father had passed away before his birth and was buried in Madinah, so he was raised by his mother. He ﷺ was breastfed after his mother by Thuwaybah al-Aslamiyyah, then Halimah al-Sa'diyyah. When he was six years old, his mother passed away, and he was taken care of by his foster mother, Umm Ayman. Thereafter, his grandfather took care of him. When he was eight years old, his grandfather passed away, so his uncle Abu Talib took care of him.

At the age of nine, he travelled with his uncle Abu Talib to Syria, where Bahīrā the monk recognized him. At the age of twenty-five, he travelled in trade for Sayyidah Khadijah, and two months after his return, he married her when she was forty years old.

At the age of thirty-five, he participated with the Quraysh in rebuilding the Kaaba and arbitrated among them in placing the Black Stone in its place. He became well-known among his people for his praiseworthy qualities, and they loved and respected him, so they called him "Al-Amīn" (the trustworthy one). ALLĀH protected him from the deeds of ignorance, and he preferred solitude as he approached forty years old. He used to worship in the cave of Hira, following the religion of his grandfather Ibrahim.

RAMADĀN REFLECTIONS: DAY 3⃣

COMBINING PIETY AND VIRTUE

The truly religious are those whose faith is rooted in a balanced approach, nurturing both their relationship with ALLĀH and their good treatment of others. Limiting religiosity to personal acts of worship like prayer and fasting while neglecting kindness and service to others creates a significant gap in the completeness of one's faith. True success in this life and the Hereafter comes from sincere devotion to ALLĀH and excellence in character towards others.

Sheikh As-Sa'di highlights this balance, explaining that ALLĀH frequently pairs prayer and zakah in the Qur'an. Prayer signifies sincerity and devotion to ALLĀH, while zakah and charity embody kindness and care for others. The essence of a believer’s ultimate success lies in these two qualities—sincere worship of ALLĀH and striving to benefit HIS creation. Conversely, true loss and misery stem from the absence of both sincerity in worship and goodness towards others.

RAMADĀN REFLECTIONS: DAY 2⃣

READING IN THE NAME OF ALLĀH

The emphasis in the command is not just to Read but to 'Read in the name of your Lord'.

Jibrīl commanded the Prophet (ﷺ) to 'Read' three times, but each time he (ﷺ) replied, 'I am not a reader,' until Jibrīl said, 'Read! In the Name of your Lord.'

This signifies reading with the help, guidance, and invocation of the Creator’s name, seeking HIS blessings during and after the act.

We are encouraged to start any activity—whether reading, speaking, or acquiring knowledge—by saying Bismillāh. Beginning a task in the name of ALLĀH serves as a tool for achieving success.

At a deeper level, it reminds us that all knowledge ultimately comes from ALLĀH, it is by HIS permission that we are granted the ability to learn and comprehend. Recognizing this fosters humility, as we acknowledge that our understanding is limited and dependent on HIS will, as the angels acknowledged,

"...we have no knowledge except what YOU have taught us." (2:32)

DO NOT BEGIN FASTING UNTIL THE CRESCENT IS SIGHTED

ALLĀH says: "So whoever sights ˹the crescent of˺ the month, let him fast it." {Al-Baqarah || Verse 185}

Ibn Umar (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadān), and do not give up fasting till you see the crescent (of Shawwal), but if the sky is overcast (if you cannot see it), then act on estimation (i.e. count Sha'ban as 30 days)."

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said, "If the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the term as thirty days." {al-Bukha‌ri‌ #1807, Muslim #1080}

Ibn ‘Umar said: "The people went out to sight the new moon and I told the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) that I had seen it, so he fasted and told the people to fast." {Abu Dāwūd #2342}

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "We are an unlettered Ummah, we do not use astronomical counting or computation. The month is like this, and this, and this," he did three times, showing it as twenty-nine. {An Nasā'i #2140}

Sheikh Ibn Bāz (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The Hadiths concerning this matter are numerous and all of them prove that it is obligatory to act according to the sighting or completion of the number of days (in the month as 30) when there is no sighting. Likewise they prove that it is not permissible to rely on calculations for this. Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taimiyyah mentioned that it is the consensus of the people of knowledge that it is not permissible to rely upon calculations to confirm the new moons. This is the truth concerning which there is no doubt. And ALLĀH is the Giver of success."  {Fatāwa Islāmiyah (3/222-224)}

It should be noted that what is obligatory is to fast when the sighting of the moon is confirmed, even if it is seen by only one trustworthy Muslim, as the Prophet (ﷺ) issued orders to fast when a Bedouin testified that he had seen the new moon. Interpreting the verse (2:185) or hadith "Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadān)" as meaning that no individual should fast until he sees the new moon for himself is incorrect, because the hadīth is telling everyone to fast when the sighting is confirmed, even if only one trustworthy Muslim sees the new moon. Evidence that the sighting of the new moon by one trustworthy, reliable Muslim is sufficient for fasting to be obligatory on all the people is the hadith of Ibn 'Umar in Abu Dāwūd #2342 (mentioned above)

ALLĀH knows best.

EASE AND NOT HARDSHIP

ALLĀH said:

يُرِيدُ اللّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ
ALLĀH intends for you ease, and HE does not want to make things difficult for you.

That is, ALLĀH wants to make the paths that lead to attaining HIS pleasure very easy for you. Hence everything that ALLĀH has enjoined upon HIS slaves is very easy.

If something happens to make it difficult, then there is another option to make it easier, either by waiving the obligation or by reducing it in some way.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

Abu Huraira (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Verily, the religion is easy and no one burdens himself in religion but that it overwhelms him. Follow the right course, seek closeness to ALLĀH, give glad tidings, and seek help for worship in the morning and evening and a part of the night." {Al-Bukhārī #39}

PROHIBITION AGAINST FAVORING ONE CHILD OVER ANOTHER IN GIVING GIFT

An-Nu'man bin Bashir (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) said:

My father took me to the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ and said to him: "I have gifted one of my slaves to this son of mine.''

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Have you given such gift to every son of yours?''

He replied, "No.''

Thereupon he said, "Take this gift back.''

Another narration is:
The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said, "Be mindful of your obligation to ALLĀH and do justice in respect of your children.''

My father came back and revoked his gift.

Another narration is:
The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Have you other children besides this one?''

He said, "Yes.''

The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Have you awarded a gift like this to all of them.''

He said, "No.'' The Prophet ﷺ said, "I am not going to bear witness to this act of injustice.''

Another narration is:
The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you not except goodness from all of them as you except from him?''

He said, "Yes, of course.''

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then don't do this (i.e., do not give a gift to one son only).'' {Al-Bukhari and Muslim}

{Riyādhus-Saliḥīn: Book 18, Chapter 353, Hadith 1773}

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymīn (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) commented: "Al-Awlād encompasses males and females. The intended meaning of Al-Atiyah is gift, not Nafaqah (maintenance). With regards to maintenance, one should give every person what he needs, whether small or big. If it is assumed that one of them needs books to study while others do not need it, there is no harm in giving him the books. Similarly, if one of them needs clothes while others do not have a need, he should be provided with the clothes. If one of them is ill and needs money for treatment, there is no harm in giving him. In the same vein, there is no harm to marry for anyone of them who reaches the age of marriage.

The important point is that as long as it is to fulfill a need, justice demands giving each person according to his needs. However, if it is an ordinary act of giving gifts, it is a must to be fair among them...

So, there are three ways of redressing preferential treatment of some children.

First: He should revoke the gift.

Second: He should give the like of what he gave him to others, and ‘A male takes the share of two females.'

Third: He should seek for their clemency on the conditions that they grant him pardon out of pleasure and contentment not out of shyness or duress...

If he bestows a gift on one of them for memorizing the Qur’an, and he says to the others: ‘Whoever seeks for knowledge among you, I will give him the like of what I have given his brother’ or ‘Whoever memorizes the Qur’an, I will give him the like of what I have give his brother.’ If some seek for the knowledge and others do not, the latter group has no right to the gift. Nonetheless, it is not permissible to bestow the privilege on one of them without opening the door for his brothers."

And indeed WE created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth).

Thereafter WE made him (the offspring of Adam) as a Nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge and lodged it) in a safe lodging (womb of the woman).

Then WE made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then WE made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then WE made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then WE clothed the bones with flesh, and then WE brought it forth as another creation. So Blessed is ALLĀH, the Best of creators.

After that you will surely die.

Then, surely, you will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection.

ALLĀH ALONE IS THE BESTOWER OF GUIDANCE

ALLĀH says,

وَمَن لَّمْ يَجْعَلِ اللَّهُ لَهُ نُورًا فَمَا لَهُ مِن نُّورٍ
And he to whom ALLĀH has not granted light - for him there is no light.

One whom ALLĀH does not guide is ignorant and doomed, an utter loser and disbeliever...

We ask ALLĀH the Almighty to put light in our hearts and give us light on our right and on our left, and to increase us in light

{Tafsi‌r Ibn Kathīr}

It is Sunnah to recite the following Du'a when walking to the mosque from home:

"O ALLĀH, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light and in my sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and to my right light, and to my left light, and before me light and behind me light. Place in my soul light. Magnify for me light, and amplify for me light. Make for me light and make me a light. O ALLĀH, grant me light, and place light in my nerves, and in my body light and in my blood light and in my hair light and in my skin light.

O ALLĀH, make for me a light in my grave... and a light in my bones.

Increase me in light, increase me in light, increase me in light.

Grant me light upon light."
