Guys aren't immune, I guess

Buddy of mine reached out for the first time in a while (I'm just as guilty of being bad about staying in touch as he is) and I had a feeling the interaction would be MLM related as soon as he asked for help with something. At least all his eggs aren't in the Primerica basket?

1st, build hype for a (at best) mediocre product. 2nd, create FOMO by saying if people don’t buy it the moment it goes on sale, they’ll lose out forever. 3rd, have only a very limited amount available. 4th, claim it sold out in 12 mins, or was it 28, or 30 mins?

Do I warn the other potential victims?

Two dudes from a table I served a week ago used a lot of my time to tell me about their awesome debit card MLM. Because I was at work I said yes when they asked for my number.

The dude texted me the name of the scheme and it only took 30 seconds of googling to find that it’s not legit. He also texted me that there’s a meeting this Thursday at 7pm and that he expects about a dozen people to show up.

Obviously, I know it’s MLM. However I can’t help but think of the supposed dozen others that might be getting suckered into a losing battle.

Do I go to the meeting and warn these people? Hand out little info cards warning that it’s MLM and that they’re being scammed? or do I just forget about it and lose this guy’s number.

Any hope for getting a friend to see the light?

A good friend of mine is real roped into an MLM and has been for at least a few years. I think it's her second one but could be the third. I've stayed out of discussing it for the most part and honestly didn't even get confirmation it was an MLM until a couple weeks ago when she tried to pitch me on an investment thing. I actually now realize that the creams she had given me before as gifts were also products of the MLM and had I shown any interest she may have tried to pitch me on that too. I guess come to think of it she did invite me to a webinar once also 🤔

Anyway, I actually got the details now and sent her the income disclosure and gently let her know that I don't think she'll be able to make the money she hopes for and I stupidly thought she'd by like, "oh man you're right that sucks", but nope. She gave me a whole spiel on how her company is positioned to grow like Amazon and if we only knew we could have been referring people with our prime memberships long ago we'd be rich now, etc. Etc. So I said regardless of if this company works out or not I think getting into sales is a good idea (it's what I do, legitimately) and sent her a link to a sales guy I like to follow. She never responded which isn't like her. Now I'm wondering if I should just let the whole conversation go and move on, send her links to interesting side gigs I think she could pursue, or give her my honest and heartfelt opinion that I think she has so much potential and that this MLM is taking advantage of her vulnerability.

Any advise? I feel like at this point she's at least 3 years in and not seeing it so she may need it spelled out. She's a single mom in crippling debt and I feel like standing back and watching her go down this path is a serious disservice as her friend, but also not sure if anything I do will help her see the light.

My aunt sent me a 2nd message about Plexus. 🤦🏻‍♀️

So, my aunt, who I’ve not seen in many years but who is my friend on Facebook has now sent me a second message on Facebook about Plexus. I ignored the first one, but feel bad about ignoring her again, but I also don’t want to be rude or really engage with her about how Plexus is an MLM and how stupid and destructive they are. She’s a widow and in her early 70’s. Gah!

Any advice on a nice way to stop this or should I just ignore the message again?

Genuinely concerned for their mental well-being

Just as the title says. Is anyone else concerned? It blows my mind the 'fake' and flip-flop reality they portray.

For the past 10 months, a friend has gushed about her AMAZING life. Never felt better, has a ton of energy, her health is excellent, and so on. Every. Single. Day. All because of THRIVE.

Today, she posted she's been feeling pretty terrible for a while now. Super tired, sluggish, mentally slow, zero energy, etc. She's starting THRIVE's new reset/detox program for the next week. Promoting it of course, and asking everyone to join.

Do they not realize how stupid this looks? The stories/narratives are beyond conflicting. They do understand their posts are going out to the same audience, right?

I honest to god feel as though they have some kind of multiple personality disorder. All of this to make what, like an extra $22 per month?

Is Future of Digital a MLM?

Hi.

A relative of mine is involved in this company, she often advertises their meetings and courses on how to promote your company online and how to be a digital nomad. I cannot find lots of info about this company but it seems to me that it's a pyramid scheme, having all these people recruiting other people.

What do you guys think? Their website is https://futureofdigital.info/# . You can switch to english on the top right corner

Would you ever go to a “tea and shake” shop?

So, in completely normal circumstances I would NEVER go to one. I think the MLM associated with these shops is predatory, especially to Mom’s without much money. Where I live they are a dime a dozen and at the end of the day, they don’t actually provide a good product.

However, I have family that lives in a VERY rural area. The sort of place where there aren’t a lot of jobs, especially for people who also have children to watch. Where my family is from there are only two of these shops in a 100 mile radius. There used to only be one but it was doing really well and a family member who worked there decided to open her own. Women owning a business up there is almost unheard of. This is the one time I am tempted to go to one. I actually do want to support a local working mother, like they all accuse us of not wanting to do by not supporting their MLMs. I’m pretty torn about this because despite it being an MLM, this girl is actually doing really for herself in a place where there isn’t a lot to accomplish. Since she’s the only one in a large area her shop is very popular and people up there LOVE MLMs so no one else in the area has the issue I’m having. Also, since she wasn’t encouraged to open her shop in an area saturated with these stores, it feels less predatory to me. The predatory part comes when they tell everyone they can be a millionaire when only a small number of people can make it to the top. But this girl actually is a mother who opened a successful business that happens to be associated with an MLM.

Would you visit this tea shop? Like I said, normally, not only would my answer be no but I’d probably go out of my way to deter people from going there. But this feels a lot more personal. I also don’t know a ton about how these shops work and maybe they still are super predatory? Just trying to figure out whether I’d be doing more harm than good.

How can I convince my brother this is an MLM?

After rescuing my brother from one MLM called Vitric 7 a couple weeks ago, he was hit up by another company last week that sells life insurance. They hosted two informational sessions where they talked up the role and how “easy” it was to make all this money. Then, hours later, he interviews for 20 minutes and BAM! He got the job.

They told him he would have to pay $100 to get his license to sell life insurance and then after that, he will be training…on his own computer. Unpaid. He said the manager will put his name on sales so he can also get credit and make money while training. This is a 100% commission gig, naturally. Allegedly, the commish is 50% of the contract values sold, but you don’t get the lump sum at once. The amount is divided by 12 and you’re paid monthly…most likely because people can cancel at any time.

The big MLM red flag was when they told him that he could start managing his own team in as little as 6 months. They also brought some guy into a zoom to tell my brother how he made $600,000 his second year selling. 🙄 yeah…OK.

This screams MLM to me but he is refusing to see the red flags. I tried to tell him that it doesn’t make sense for a company to push you into management before they even see your performance or know whether you possess leadership qualities to begin with. They’re pushing leadership because that’s how the pyramid is built and how this manager can be pushed further to the top of the pyramid. The insurance is GlobeLife however the company operating this whole thing has a totally different name and is “owned” by some guy in his late 20’s.

How do I prove that this isn’t legit and is an MLM? Or should I let him figure it out on his own?

Help identifying if this is an MLM or not?

Hi!

I'm looking for advice regarding this company here in the UK. One of my friends just got a job with them, and I'm seeing a lot of red flags. I just wanted to make sure before jumping in and telling her what I think about it. Also, I did check the list/website of confirmed MLM schemes, and this isn't on there (maybe because it's exclusive to the UK? I'm not sure).

The company is called RedSeven marketing, and her position is Brand Ambassador/Sales Assistant. There is apparently no hourly wage, it is based around commission. For every customer she sells to, she gets £24. She doesn't have to pay anything to be involved in this, which is why I'm not sure if it completely fits the criteria of an MLM. I'll attach a photo of the flyer she applied from.

The pay seems massively overinflated, and they say she has to sell to at least 15 people per day (rough estimate). Like, realistically, she is never going to reach the top level. There's different bands with different levels of commision. We are still in university, and this is copy/pasted directly from a message she sent me:

'they were like usually we wouldn’t consider hiring someone in your circumstances (bc the commute and im going back to uni) but we really like you and think you’re a good investment for the company'.

That gives warning sign to me. They're already even trying to get her to come back next summer, and potentially even a permanent job after uni.

I care about her, and I just genuinely think she's being a bit stupid and hasn't actually thought about any of this. If this does sound like an MLM, I'll find some way to tell her, but I just don't want to get ahead of myself.

Any thoughts are appreciated :)

My mum's colleague has set up a GoFundMe for an "Affiliate Marketing Opportunity".

No idea what it's for, we're based in the UK, and the GoFundMe is for £10000. Has all the usual Hun lingo in the description, and so far she's had a single £20 donation.

Told Mum to stay well clear and say something to her if she can, but I fear she is determined to raise the money and instantly lose it. Any ideas as to what the MLM might be?

My (40M) parents (~70) “retired” a few years ago and started a new MLM.

Dad started a new MLM about that time (he has a long history with Amway/Quixtar). They don’t own a home, and I don’t think they ever will. My best guess is they have around 175k in IRAs and SS coming in. I don’t know how they’re making it. I started getting collections calls from people asking for my dad. I think they’re calling known associates. I don’t know what to do. Dad and mom will not easily, possibly decline to, discuss finances with me. But I’m not sure that all of their needs are being met. Their rent is 3k a month for a home that is obscenely large for their needs. Dad travels weeks at a time “building” his business. What do you do? When is the time to step in and intervene?
