MLM Victim Interview Inquiry

Hello! I am conducting an investigative journalism piece on MLMs and their controversial business practices. The goal of my project is to inform audiences on the hidden prevalence of these businesses and the danger of getting involved in them, as well as to analyze the popularized characterization of them as cults. I am looking to interview people with first-hand experience working for MLMs. If this interests you, please respond to this post with a description as to why you would be a suitable source. Thank you!

Why does everyone hate amway?

Can anyone in this subreddit tell me why amway is over hated? my mum and step dad are founders platinums and are always going in free trips to places like dubai and hamilton island every november but it’s come to my attention that people think amway is a scam. it certainly doesn’t have a good reputation because the system around 6 years ago was so crappy that if someone bought from your store you could just not deliver the packages to them (which a lot of people did) but even then it’s all pretty much online now. i dont really see the issue as the son of a mother with a founders platinum business because it looks like everyone is just improving themselves and teaching themselves how to stop bad habits and get into the right mindset. maybe it’s only an australian thing though idk what america amway is like. so, what made you guys despise amway’s network affiliate marketing?

MLM question

So I’m trying to get my head around MLM’s and how they work.
A local business person I know is now selling for Color Street Nails. She usually just does wedding or party cakes so thinks it’s a nice add on to what she already does, just to make a bit of extra money m. She’s hasn’t to recruit anyone else.

So my question is- if she just sold the nails and made a little extra money and didn’t recruit anyone else, is there any harm in it?

My friend is going to one of her Color Street nail events and when I said that’s a pyramid scheme, I didn’t really have an explanation as to why she couldn’t go. She just sees it as supporting someone’s new business adventure.

Hydrogen water

Can anyone tell me if this website healthyhydration.com is an MLM? There is a trade in your old filtration system page and the new system is $5k.

A woman bought it and is using it in her coffee stand and has printed out flyers on the windows making bullshit claims. She says she isnt making the water into 'hydrogen water' for use in her drinks. Her drinks have tasted different/just..off since she started pushing this.

She is posting glam type photos with her water bottle. Also posted pics of some getaway with her hydrogen water mentor and buddies. They are always dressed up and portraying a glam look. 🙄

She's usually smart, but this makes me sad.
I am guessing its maybe kangen?
If anyone could verify, so I can find legit anti links to post, that'd be awesome.

Harmonic Egg?

My Mom keeps on talking about this Harmonic Egg thing, where you go into a little chamber and get "blasted with frequencies" or something for $100 an hour. She really wants to buy one for her business, but I'd rather not. Its literally $70,000. My brother's education or this? Does anyone know more about this harmonic egg thing? When I look it up in Reddit all I see is ads. Appreciated.

Depictions of MLMs in television and film?

The only times i’ve seen MLMs drifted in film are in On Becoming a God in Central Florida and the timeshare episode of It’s Always Sunny. (i love both of these). Are there any other shows or movies about them? I know there’s some documentaries but i’m more looking for fictional stories.

It seems like despite the MLM industry being pretty big, it is rarely shown in tv/film. I feel like a lot of interesting/funny/sad stories could be told about the people involved.

Alliance Group? Producers Group?

Has anyone heard of them? There’s a woman in my local moms group who’s trying to recruit other moms to join her “team”. Her and her husband apparently do financial counseling and sell insurance. She’s sponsored by: Alliance Group, Five Rings Financial, and Ideal Producers Group. These sponsors all seem fishy to me, and she says she’s not an MLM but I just don’t buy it.

Familiar with this company?

I met a woman at a networking event who took interest in me and said she wanted to connect me with one of her friends who has her own business to see if there was any synergy.

The first convo was her telling me about her legitimate business (I googled it - very impressive) but then she shared that she has several business partners for an affiliate marketing type of business. She didn’t tell me about it but told me to read an excerpt from Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

We had our convo and it’s network marketing and some of the brands they work with listed were Netflix, Visa, Universal, etc. Still the convo was high level but the scenario she provided was that I and others would be making our regular purchases through my store and I’d profit in addition to bringing people into the opportunity. I googled her business partners name and there is no trace of what he does but his LinkedIn says online marketer.

She said there will be a couple more calls. I don’t like being led on - anyone know what company this is?

Isagenix is disgusting

My gym has been trying to find a new supply of whey protein to sell to members ever since COVID ruined the one we had and members have been asking. My boss’ kid is fresh out of college and has been “hired” to take over the family business and make these decisions for the company. Despite all the suggestions by people that work there or attend the gym, she hasn’t been happy and wants the “perfect” brand without sucralose and other “toxic ingredients”. She’s been sampling a few and leaving on the counter for us employees to sample and asking for feedback. Turns out, dear daughter just got sucked into Isagenix and is now trying to peddle the stuff at the gym. Today, after class, I came out and there were three tubs of Isagenix protein sitting behind the front desk with “SAMPLE” written on them. She was there, so I decided to try some in front of her.

The “rich chocolate” was absolutely disgusting, even with my hatred of MLMs. It tasted like cocoa powder, and mixed about the same. When I said I give it a 1/10 I was told it’s because my body is used to the chemical sweeteners and I need to get used to the “natural ingredients” used to sweeten the protein.

So yeah, this should be fun for me 🤦🏻‍♂️

But why do they have to be so shady?

I'm an accountant. I work a full time W2 job and own my own business. I work completely remotely.

A few months back, this woman hits up my business facebook page about like networking. Like telling me she has a bookkeeping background and just likes to network with other accountants and such. I'm a super introvert, but I'm like, sure we can talk and network. Maybe we can refer clients to each other, right?

So we have like a zoom coffee meet thing. Where out of nowhere, this girl launches into a freaking power point presentation about whatever damn life insurance company she is pedaling for and blah blah blah. I'm like "look I have my own business. I have TWO jobs. I have a kid. I really don't have time for anything else"

"But it's passive income. Perfect for someone with kids! You can work remotely! You'll be a business owner and get to pass off your business to your child!"

I'm already all those things. And you're sitting here telling me don't even worry about studying for the licensing exam because you basically have a cheat sheet for all the answers, and then at the same time, telling me that MY investments are bad and that I need private life insurance and that it's a better deal than the $500K insurance I have through work that cost like $8/month. I think life insurance as an investment tool is stupid, and I'm pretty happy with my 401k, IRAs, and other investment accounts. Like... y'all. Why.

My experience working at American Income Life

TW: mention of drugs, sexual harassment, illegal practices

I worked at AIL from 2016-2017, both as a recruiter and an agent. I met my “manager” through a friend of a friend. Manager owned a lot of really expensive things and seemed very successful without a college degree.

The interview process was much like the other stories, I was told to look very interested in group and was pulled back for a one on one. My manager offered to pay for all of the start up costs since she knew me.

I was told to plan on making $4k+ a month once licensed, which was a dream come true having made only $800/month prior. My manager knew I needed money while I was waiting to get my license, so she paid me to recruit for interviews.

I was so excited about the golden egg I’d landed on that my interview attendance ratios were amazing. I sold people on the job solely through enthusiasm. A lot of people I recruited were hired on.

After I became licensed, my manager sold a few policies with me and put them under my name so I’d get the upfront payment. My first solo policy accidentally cleared the client signatures, and my manager resigned herself. I was uncomfortable but being naive and meek, I didn’t argue much.

I worked 12 hour days, 7 days a week. I was doing okay for myself, and in the beginning I had insanely high closing ratios because of how much I believed I was helping people.

The craziest part of my experience was the agency itself. It was most definitely a boy’s club, the higher level agents all in custom suits, overly manicured and reeking of cologne. There was a lot of drama because they slept around the office. There was constant wild partying, but I only saw a small part of it myself.

One agent constantly sexually harassed the women in the office. I have a video of him laying underneath a desk while he was trying to look up my skirt. My dad urged me to file a complaint against him but I wanted to continue to be “one of the boys”. He had a rampant cocaine problem, never followed rules, and constantly went missing for days. I witnessed interactions he had with women and couldn’t believe the degradation these women put themselves through to sleep with him. He passed nudes around of women we worked with. All was forgiven though since he regularly pulled in $10k+ in bonuses at the weekly meetings. After I left he ended up getting fired for submitting oral swabs that he took himself. Policies got rejected because the swabs were coming back positive for coke, nicotine, and THC. He was sent to rehab, but last I heard he was using again and hired back on to the agency.

I started to lose faith when I saw how the people I’d recruited were struggling. One agent was about to lose her house after not seeing a check for months. If we had low sales we were told we weren’t trying hard enough. I was close to being promoted but I couldn’t push policies on families who could barely afford food, and the disappointment on their faces over “missing out” on something that would help their families was more than I could take.

After I left, I had documents with sensitive information in my possession. Agents were expected to maintain records themselves, but there was no guarantee that this was done securely, there was no tracking system. I disposed of my documents properly, but I have no doubt that there are thousands of people’s social security numbers floating around. We’d been told at every weekly meeting that we were worth more than an hourly rate, but damn was I grateful to make minimum wage after all of it.

Forgot to add: months after I resigned I got a call from home office saying my policy was going to lapse since I missed payments. I’d never signed up for a policy, and the rep told me one of my higher level managers was the signing agent. I called him, and he denied any knowledge of the policy. My theory is that he signed me up and paid a few months of the policy to get a new agent a small payday.
