How do they not realize it’s a scam??

My mom is a personal trainer. She has quite a few clients, one of which is big into doTerra. He’s tried to sell her products several times, all of which she’s turned down. At one point, she even told him she isn’t comfortable being his personal trainer if he’s just going to try and recruit her.

This week, he came and asked her for a favor. He said he didn’t have enough people buying a certain product, and as such he wouldn’t be making money on account of not reaching a quota. He said he can’t buy it himself, but he can venmo my mom $5K to buy it for him, which he’s willing to do.

She declined, and said she is no longer interested in being his personal trainer. But holy shit, how can they not realize they’re being shafted when they have to pay thousands for their own products in order to make anything???

Fell for Primerica

Fell for Primerica

I feel like such a moron.

For context, I've been without work for over 4 months. With applications going nowhere, ive been desperate, and latched onto this 'opportunity' i was given to do Primerica.

The signs were there right from the start. Couldn't share the information with people, the recruiter trying to convince me to not take time to think on it, even having to pay for my own darned background check.

I realize now what I've fallen for, and I gotta know, how do I get out of this???

The contract says that either party can terminate the contract at any time, and I don't see a fee anywhere for doing so. So if I just... ignore them, will they sort of go away?

At this point I'd rather take my losses and leave before they take anymore of what little money I have left and just go to a temp agency tomorrow.

Any advice is appreciated

Hun in the wild

Met a lady today all for 5 seconds at the park. Went to go play with my LO and this woman came to find me to see if we could “connect on social media”. During the 5 seconds I met her it was really saying hi to her kid that ran up to mine to play. Then off we went. It gave me MLM vibes the way she said it, “connect on social media”. I told her I didn’t have SM and she insisted I get her number. I never texted her mine but I have a feeling if I do, it’s going to be about a “business opportunity”
My husband thinks she was just being nice but he doesn’t understand MLMs 🥴

WFG and being a clieny

client sorry typo

Hi folks I am a nurse and recently, a nurse friend I adore, respect, and admire educated me on jumping aboard WFG/Transamerica. Im not savvy on money matters so I was bought in after talking with her a lot….i paid $125 for an administrative fee/background check, and an hour long session with the WFG powerpoint along with introducing how the folks who work the grind like us can make 6 figures with this passive income. The fee also covers 9 months of online educational materials/sessions.

The senior manager on zoom seemed knowledgeable but notably pushy.

Im a financially-non educated, people trusting pushover so i signed on to be an agent and paid the dang 125 dollars. Nursing is all that I really know how to do in terms of career growth and expansion tbh. Im regretting this really bad. How fcked am I…. And how do I back out of this scheme 100% and tell my friend that this is not what I want to do and somehow keep our amicable friendship, amicable??

So far i told her that business with WfG is not for me as business is not something I want out of this and she seems OK with that answer since Im still investing in their education materials for licensing etc etc. please help. Thank you.

Any one heard of Nu Skin? Is it some scam?

My dad and I visited one of his friends for like 2 days. The moment I was there this woman started talking about the company Nu Skin and all their products. She insisted how their products are really good for all these types of diseases. They have some vitamins or whatever, juice thats supposedly very good for gut health. She bragged about how successful this company is but I really have never heard of Nu Skin for a company that’s supposed to be so successful? She showed us an award she got in the 90s in the US congratulating her for being one of the people who was awarded a million dollars. She discussed all the products cause she had some kind of book that listed all the ingredients and what they were good for. She also had this magazine that had pictures of very successful and well-known figures and physicians around the world and in the country. I started getting very uncomfortable after that, because she was insisting my dad who is a medical doctor should prescribe the supplements to his patients. I started telling him later on that night on our first stay how suspicious everything was and that it was probably a scam. This woman flaunted her $1 million dollar award and how she was able to retire early outside of america, she invited us to her penthouse in such an upscale area in the city. She insisted we come with her to the company offices where all the products were. Even though I saw all those things in their very luxurious company office I was still doubtful but my dad seemed so smitten and engaging. What bothered me the most was when this woman invited another doctor who works with her, she had retired as a medical doctor and is only working with the company. She asked my dad if he still prescribed statins to his patients and she explained it’s useless medicine and why those supplements from the company works. Load of bs. Every single minute of our stay in her penthouse this woman could not talk about anything else except for this company and her products. I don’t know I’m so skeptical and I’m worried about my dad cause this might ruin his career. I’ve tried to do my research online about this company since theyre apparently so well known. they have over half a million followers on instagram, number of likes hidden and little to no interactions. Not much said on google either

I decided not to continue contact with this guy when I sensed he was in an MLM. Was I probably right?

At work the other day a customer came in and I started talking him through some of the products. Conversation turned to the city we lived in and how as native-born people we had seen it change. He started saying how he found it was “just so hard to work up the corporate ladder” which wasn’t a red flag at this point.

Then he told me he had started a “side gig” recently and had multiple mentors. I’m genuinely impressed by entrepreneurs so I asked where he found his mentors, to which he said “they found me”. Which I don’t think is really a thing? Seems like most mentors are sought through internships or programs or personal connections but anyone claiming to be a mentor and seeking people out feels fishy.

Last nail in the coffin, he told me how he’d tried to start his own business of buying and selling kitchen wares and it wasn’t until he met these mentors that he made it successful. He then said he really liked my energy and asked for my contact info.

This dude purely wants to sell me on his MLM, right? These all seem like massive red flags to me

How to help my friend who's into herbalife

Hello, first time posting here. In the beginning of the year, my friend (M26) invited me (F27) to a "fitness club meeting" which was herbalife advertising. I wasn't too motivated because I'm not too interested in that stuff but because he's a friend and was really happy about it I came. They were giving there some herbalife milk shakes and pancakes, and later there was a presentation where several people showed their results (which wasn't too unconvincing) and also explained how they got money by "coaching".

In the following months, he convinced me to do a nutrition bilan and even sold me a few products (a tea that tasted like shit, some pills, some bars and the famous milk shakes ofc). He even tried to make me advise other friends of mine about herbalife, which I tried with one single coworker and he wasn't interested so I eventually stopped there. The whole becoming a seller thing is not something I'm very receptive to (I have a good paying job that I really like precisely because I don't have to interact with customers). My gf at the time saw the scam but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm personally not particularly fat or anything, but I did want to loose some fat. I also started eating more healthily at this point, making my own meals with organic and local food instead of ordering pizza or uber eats, eating way more vegetables to the point most of my meals are now vegetarian, an habit I kept since, unlike the herbalife products which I stopped buying after 3 months when I discovered this sub and read about the risks coming with them. I did loose the fat I wanted to loose, which is more due to the change in food habits than to the milk shakes (case in point, I didn't regain the fat).

My friend ended up stopping messaging me about the monthly nutrition bilan or about the products, although we continued to discuss other things. 10 days ago, he sent me a message asking me if I wanted to do it but I also ignored it, and a few days later messaged him about video games and we chatted about them and he didn't really mention the herbalife stuff since. Yesterday, he came home and complained about money issues, I showed him a new game that was on sale for 14€ and proposed him to buy it so that we could play together and he said he did not have any money left after paying the bills (ended up buying him the game). I'm increasingly worried about him. He works in insurance so he should at least be aware about the risks of MLM stuff, right? How can I help him without coming off as hostile?

Hi Reddit, I’m Jane Marie, host of investigative podcast “The Dream” and author of the forthcoming MLM exposé, “Selling The Dream: The Billion-Dollar Industry Bankrupting Americans,” AMA!

I am a Peabody and Emmy award-winning journalist and producer. In past seasons of my podcast, The Dream, I’ve probed MLMs and the wellness industry. In the most recent third season, I took on life coaches and gurus to see if they really hold the secret to living our best lives—including a tense convo with the controversial Jessie “Boss Lee” Ward. And yes - I even hired my own life coach for six months to see if they could kick me out of a funk.

My book, “Selling The Dream: The Billion-Dollar Industry Bankrupting Americans,” reveals how these MLMs—often owned by political and corporate elites, such as the Devos and the Van Andels families—have made a windfall in profit off of the desperation of the American working class. It is now available for pre-order.

Ask me anything about the MLM-to-coaching pipeline, why the American Dream is kinda BS, and whether life coaching is always a scam. I promise not to sell you any herbal supplements or coaching courses in the process.😝 Let the questions roll in!

I feel betrayed and sad

Apologies for messy writing. I just feel horrible right now and want to write about it.

I’ve been living abroad with not much friends for about a year now. I was minding my own business at a lively park and then I was approached to some people who “just moved here” and were asking me of a good place to eat.

We talked a bunch and it was all cool. I was happy to meet a group of new friends!
They introduced me some skincare products because they asked how my routine was. They demo’d the products on me and I was impressed. However, I didn’t know what Amway was.

Then another person approached me on another day at the same park and said my skin looked good. Asked me to hangout and meet someone who can teach me more about skincare. I said ok. (by this time idk why i didn’t even catch what was going on) This person started talking about helping the world and making money by doing it or something. then brings a sign up sheet of amway. I just played along without making any commitment til i could get a chance to leave.

my heart kind of sunk and i felt scared and just.. idk broken. I thought I had new friends but nope…

tldr
Was alone abroad. Met new friends but actually not because they’re just trying to get me to join amway.
