Friends, stay away from Herbalife MLM scam. Use this post as a caution to all your loved ones.

Herbalife sells expensive diet supplements as meal replacements and market them as a “get skinny quick trick.”

My grandfather, at the time he started using Herbalife was 75 years old in 2013. This is the time which we found out about his usage of the supplements at least. He was an educated man, who had his own money so there is no telling when he started purchasing and consuming them exactly.

He was physically fit. He wasn’t obese. He had no comorbidities- no common ailments as well such as Diabetes, Hypertension, etc. He woke up at 6AM everyday to do yoga, meditation and pranayama. He went walking everyday for an hour at least even up to his last days. He ate more raw food (fruits and vegetables) and would avoid processed/oily food and basically whatever he deemed to be unhealthy. That was his lifestyle for decades before he started these Herbalife powders.

A woman in the apartment building he stayed at, got to him and convinced him Herbalife drinks are supposed to be some superfood substitute and would make him live up to 100. She knew he was a pensioner with his own money and she knew he could pay without consulting any of his family members.

After finding out about his daily consumption of these drinks, we urged him to stop. A couple years after continued consumption of the Herbalife products, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. They had to remove one of his kidneys to prevent the spread. We told him to quit the supplements immediately and the oncologist also advised him the same. This is when he stopped.

Being the healthy man he is, he bounced back after his kidney removal very quick and continued his active lifestyle. This time, he ensured not to consume HerbaLife.

Fast forward to May 2025, my dear grandfather passed away following a series of seizures which arose suddenly. The CT brain revealed lesions in his brain which was suspected to be metastasis of his previously diagnosed kidney cancer. Before we could do anything to treat him, he deteriorated very quickly in our own home. It was excruciatingly painful to see him lose his senses, one by one, every day. The 87 year old man who was more active than me in my twenties, was nothing but a vegetable, lying in bed and waiting for his time to go. With each day, I wanted his suffering to end quick but was devastated that I was going to lose him to such a horrific disease.

Please use this post as a caution to any of your family members consuming these supplements. Prioritize consuming real food- fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy and grains rather than ultra processed shakes which are just pyramid schemes designed to keep the consumer coming back for more. All you are doing is lining the pockets of people who have no remorse for others and are willing to prey on vulnerable, old people to make some quick cash.

Okay kids its my turn. My cousin just texted asking if I need cleaning supplies because shes using a new company that has less toxins and chemicals. I asked what company but she hasn't responded. Anyone wanna guess? Im going with Norwex 🤢

Edited to add: its Melaleuca! And she " isnt trying to sell me anything, just wanting to see if I want to try them"
I politely declined saying I dont participate in MLMs and got asked what a MLM is. I gave her a basic definition and again politely declined.

“Manosphere” documentary on Netflix - MLM connection

I just watched Louis Theroux’s new documentary about the Manosphere - on Netflix. There is a LOT to loathe about these scammers (the misogyny, bigotry, etc.) And holy cow....There are SO MANY ECHOES of MLMs in this cesspool:

* “The system” is rigged against you! (But if you buy into MY system, THAT'S not rigged, you'll get rich quick. But if you lose money, it's your fault.)

* Anyone who criticizes their "business model" is just a jealous hater/cuck/feminist/pedo" (also LGBTQ, Jewish, various scapegoats as they veer ever farther into the political sphere.)

* The bombastic braggadocio. Image is EVERYTHING because they're selling that fantasy. Muscles, expensive cars, mansions, cam-girls, jet skis. (You, too, can have all of this if you follow me and give me your eyeballs & money.)

* Their "success" is dependent on constantly luring new followers and money into their web with obnoxious Livestreamed content.

* The pyramid aspect is less clear, but there were definitely some hangers-on in the picture who'd won prizes + the "honor" of being a dogsbody. There were also a lot of online followers who clipped more provocative moments from the Livestream feed into short viral videos. There is definitely some sort of Level-Up in this whole disgusting enterprise.

Anyway, just wondered if anyone else saw this and connected the same dots.

My aunt just got sucked into Monat, and I'm watching the train wreck in slow motion

Ugh, you guys. My otherwise incredibly savvy aunt (seriously, she's usually the one giving me financial advice) has officially fallen prey to Monat. She just posted on Facebook about how her 'hair journey' is a 'blessing' and how she's 'empowering other women to embrace their natural beauty.'

I've seen the before/after pics she's sharing, and honestly, her hair looks... worse? It's frizzy and thin in places where it used to be thick. I'm so worried about her. She's already bought the 'starter kit' and is now hounding all of us on the family group chat to try 'samples' and attend her 'launch party' via Zoom.

How do you even approach this without sounding like you're attacking them? I want to help her see through the BS, but I know she's going to get defensive. She's usually so good at spotting scams. It's like a switch flipped. Has anyone had success talking a family member out of one of these? Or should I just prepare for the inevitable 'I told you so' moment and try to pick up the pieces later?

Girl from high school hit me up after 8 years and it was obviously a pyramid scheme pitch

Got a DM on Instagram last week from someone I barely knew in high school. We maybe talked twice ever. Message was like "hey girl! hope you're doing well! would love to catch up sometime!"

Should've known right then but I was bored so I responded. We chatted for like two days, normal small talk stuff. Then she asks if we can hop on a call to "discuss an opportunity."

Oh no.

Got on the call and within 3 minutes she's talking about financial freedom and being your own boss and how she's made $40k in the past 6 months working part time from home.

Asked her what company. She dodged the question. Asked what the product is. More dodging. Finally she's like "it's not about the product it's about the business model" and I just knew.

Primerica. It's always Primerica.

She wanted me to pay $99 to "get licensed" and then I could start "building my team." I said no thanks. She got pushy. Sent me income screenshots that were obviously fake. Testimonials from her "team."

Asked my budget app to look at my finances and tell me if I could afford to lose $99 on a scam just to make her go away. It said no lol. So I just told her I'm not interested.

Now she's sending me motivational quotes every day and acting like we're still friends. "Just wanted to check in!" with a bunch of emojis. Girl we weren't friends in 2016 and we're not friends now.

Blocked her yesterday after she sent me a voice message about how I'm "letting fear hold me back from my dreams."

My dream is to not get scammed by someone I haven't talked to in almost a decade thanks.

Why do these people always come out of nowhere and act like you're best friends? It's so weird. Thanks to this sub. I could easily identify the scam here.

The time I was called homewrecker for not joining amway

Tldr: I got lured into a friends amway pitch and when not joining got accused of trying to sabotage my friends marriage.

This was some 18 years ago, i had a friend whom i met years prior through playing Diablo online. We met a few times in real life and had a very pleasant friendship. Him and his fiancé visited when they travelled past my state, I went and got wedding stuff with the fiancé, we had gaming nights online etc. We didn’t live in the same county so it was sporadic.

One of these times I was travelling past, my friend mentioned that they were hosting a ”business-meeting” and if I wanted to come since I had started my own business. I was working as a graphic consultant, and though ”wow, how fun with like-minded people”, but when questioning what the meeting was actually about he just vaguely said that his mentor was going to teach ”business”? ”As in? Taxes? How to be freelancing? What?” No, just business apparently.

Anyhow, I went, sat there though this weird culty -buzzwordsy- nothingspeech of no substance and felt weird. This was in Sweden and I had never heard of MLMs, so I sat there listening without objections, smiling politely. When they asked me afterwards if i wanted to join I said I already ran a registered business, so I am good, and the whole room kind of got quiet. Movie-style collective draw of breath. Since i was staying with my friend that evening I couldn’t do much more than stick it out, getting side eyed all afternoon. Anyhow, evening arrived and my friend and his then wife was so weird. I tried to compliment random things, like ”oh, this kitchen knife was really easy to use” ”YOU SHOULD BUY THE SET, WE CAN HOOK YOU UP”. When asked if I could borrow shampoo it was again, ”this shampoo is amazing you need to get the set! You should sign up, nownownow” etc. So oddly pushy. I tried to gently say I was happy as I were, and glad they found something they liked.

Next day his mom arrives, takes me aside and starts ripping me a new one because she just knew I was this horrible homewrecker, here to steal her son from his wife, she had seen the ”advances” I made all the day before, my ”longing looks” (what the actual?!😅), my desire to rip their marriage apart, and pretty much forced me to leave the house. She was nasty! As I have come to understand she was their upline.

Just for clarification, there were definitely no looks of desire.

Sadly that was the end of that friendship.

Worried for my friend who joined Amway... and has tried to recruit me

TLDR: What's a good way to start the conversation about suggesting this may not be a great idea to join Amway even though she's already very much convinced that it's the best?

It's been a while since I've seen my sweet friend but I just got to come to town to visit her again and we got chatting about the text she sent me weeks ago regarding joining a "e-commerce business opportunity". She wouldn't go into further details and asked if she could send my number to her "mentor" to reach out, I said yes out of curiosity.

Her "mentor" texts me this long blurb about how my friend has "earned their trust" and that they're "taking on a select few people" and eventually asked if I supported MLMs. I texted back that I didn't think it was for me and got a big text and long voice note back essentially saying that it's fine that I'm not interested but that I should take advantage of the opportunity and hop on a call. My friend let me listen into a call just now and I gathered the key terms for their tiers (emerald, diamond, eagle) and started doing my research. I quickly discovered this is Amway and I'm pretty concerned for her.

She's a new mom and struggling financially with her partner, very much in debt and has had to borrow all of the money to pay for this "business" and for her "business trip" (amounting to a few thousand) to go to the USA (we're in Canada) for their company conference called "Family Reunion". My experience of MLMs has only been from when I was a kid and when my mom got sucked into them and spent a lot of money and forced me as a child to help her recruit and it was a major factor that caused our relationship to end (amongst other things).

Quite concerned also that my friend thinks as a "Independent Business Owner" under Amway, she can't write off all of these expenses but I dont think she's registered as a business in the government or has this limited income taxed at all so these thousands dollar "write offs" for this conference or business coffee meetings with recruits are actually legally legitimate. Send help.

Serious Question. Has there ever been a study of mental illness and the using/buying into MLM's?

Hi all,

I am seriously wondering this: has anyone ever done a study of how mental illness may or may not play a part into involvement/usage of MLM's (and/or their products)? I notice in quite a few posts by various 'Huns' that many have either wording/verbiage that refers to mental illness, or there are other clues from pictures and such. Quite often the most vulnerable are the biggest victims. I have to admit to feeling sadness and empathy for those who get sucked into MLM's AND seem to have mental issues. What are everyone else's opinions/thoughts?

Vector Marketing Almost Got Me.

As the title states I was almost suckered into the unethical world of Vector Marketing/Cutco.

Coming off the back of 3+ years in retail & wireless sales and a recent divestiture of my corporate wireless location.

During my interview we were told about the "base pay per appointment" you'll get paid $25/appointment even if you don't sell anything!

This differs from their job board postings which advertise it as a base rate which was honestly my first hint.

Had my first 8 hour training today utilizing the 40 page slop script, manager seemed to have good intentions at first but the more I listened the more it became apparent his only real motivation was profiting off the backs of the reps (Mainly 18yos and young college students)

I would've left early but honestly with a background in ethical sales I was just dumbfounded by what this guy and his colleagues were spewing out.

"Download the Vector impact App that doesn't exist on app stores and give us all your contacts and calendar access" yeah no.

At the end of the meeting myself and 4 other potential reps were pulled into a breakout room on teams and told we seemed like the leaders of the bunch with real potential. With a promise of 1on1s later in the day. Never happened.

I've blocked all contacts and deleted all correspondence, can't believe I was blind enough to almost fall for it.

Honestly there is (some) money to be made dependent on alienating friends / family / anyone they can sucker you into "Presenting to" but it's so unethical and doesn't pass the sniff test.

Do you have experience with Vector/Cutco? Positive/Negative drop it below.

TLDR. Vector Marketing/Cutco is preying on the young and Ill informed to staff their scammy sales agency. Don't recommend.

Back at it... Former Scentsy folks?

Hi everyone! First a request, then an update.

\---------

Request!

Thanks to everyone who told me their Mary Kay stories. You all are making this work possible and I am so grateful for your cooperation. I am still hoping to speak to 2-3 more folks who did Mary Kay in the past, but I am also moving forward and looking to interview folks who did Scentsy. If that's you and you're down for a zoom talk to tell me your story, send me a DM or email me at nmuffi2@uic.edu

\--------

Updates!

I'll be doing a conference at the end of the month about Mary Kay and the Limits of Corporate Feminism and the stories of both current and former MK consultants are critical for demonstrating that even in the best of circumstances (which are few), women are sold a narrative that they can have it all (family, friends, fortune) while ultimately having to make difficult choices that often betray their reasons for joining.

I also have a short and sweet article out about some observational work I did. It's linked here, but behind a paywall: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/15365042251386829

If you would like a PDF, you can email me at nmuffi2@uic.edu.

Anybody know about these weird solicitors at Barnes and Noble who tried to recommend that I read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad"?

I thought this might be a good subreddit for this. For my own background, let me say I know about Robert Kiyosaki and I read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" a long time ago. I know how the advice is poor and generic, how Kiyosaki went bankrupt and is obsessed with increasing his debt etc.

So, I was at a Barnes and Noble just browsing books near the business section. This guy dressed in a black jacket and shirt strikes up a conversation with me, asks what I'm reading, what I like to read and so on. Meanwhile, his partner, dressed the same, is walking around the same area until he finds somebody else and starts talking to them. The guy talking to me asks about my work, and then starts talking all about how great it is to stop working for others, start your own company, be your own boss, and that anybody can do it if they have the right guidance or mentor. At this point, I just ask him to get to the point and tell me what he and his friend want people to join or buy. He says they're not selling anything, they just want me to consider reading self-improvement "mindset" books, and that they specifically recommended that people read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad."

I was honestly surprised to hear that all he wanted to say to me was that I should read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad." I thought for sure he was part of some weird religious movement like the Ahn Sanghong people, or just convincing people to join an MLM. But nope! Him and his partner just want people to read Robert Kiyosaki? Is Robert Kiyosaki actually paying people to convince others to buy his books? That would be just unbelievably hilarious and ironic. So, does anybody know if that's true, or who the hell those guys are working for?

Frustrated w/the amount of posting

I'm super frustrated but feeling guilty at the same time. One of my closest friends has been sucked in and the amount of posting she does on the products has me THISCLOSE to unfollowing her.

At first she claimed she was only going to do it for the discount. But then she started to grow her team. Now she's working towards incentives and in order to meet the goals, she has been nonstop posting on all social media forms about the product. Like no where on her socials is anything about her or her life anymore. The text messages are always about new team members, can I come to one of her set ups, can I place an order.

She was in a really weird place before starting this and now she seems to be happier (?), motivated, more social, so I feel terrible that this annoys me so much. I also don't hate the product and do use it occasionally 🙄 (solely because I can't find anything that lasts as well), but it is becoming Too Much and I'm struggling as to how to proceed. I know if I say something, she will spiral... just frustrated and confused.
