WFG ruined my family’s life
this is a very long post, i will include a tldr at the end.
this started back in 2011. my mom had just split from my abusive father and was left alone to fend for herself and her two young kids (i was about 5, my sister was 2). an agent approached her probably around the lines of “i can help you build wealth for you and your children and give you an opportunity blah blah.” it took an incredible amount of courage to leave my father since she was an immigrant with literally no job experience. i will say, even though the hope was false hope, the agent gave my mom enough courage and belief in her financial future to leave my dad. maybe that’s what she needed to get out of there.
i had a pretty fucking rough childhood, and i’m only learning why now.
1. when i started going to school, i had a good amount of confidence and made a good amount of friends. slowly, people stopped talking to me, i lost a bunch of friends and was treated like an outsider. this effected my social abilities and i never quite recovered. this was over the span of my core development years, age 5 to 13ish. the reason? my mom would ALWAYS talk to the parents of my friends and try to pull them into this stupid mlm. the parents, sensing the scam, would tell their child to stay away from me or not to come to my place or whatever. small thing, but it impacted me drastically. i didn’t know why, but when i went to highschool, i instinctively stopped telling my mom about my friends because i knew she would try to reach out to their parents to have them “work with her” (my sister and I are also isolated from our cousins, cuz my aunts and uncles don’t want to deal with my moms pestering. my mom isn’t even annoying, her “agent” keeps trying to use manipulation to force her and even invites himself to family functions to force my mom to talk to her family)
2. we were always financially fucked. i gained financial awareness at a very young age and this has messed up my brain to this day (im 20 now). my mom would always say “just wait until my business grows!! it will grow by next year and i will give you everything. just give mom some time.” now that im grown up, i realize that the predatory agents kept using my brother and I as leverage for my single mom. they kept bringing her back everytime she suggested it wasn’t working for her by using my brother and I as manipulation tactics. they knew she was vulnerable and used it against her. they kept promising her a bright financial future for her kids and my vulnerable, immigrant mom was a victim. it also sucked never having enough money for sports/extracurriculars. i guess that just comes with being poor.
3. i had no savings for university. ironic right? since wfg tells you they’ll help you plan for your child’s future??? my mom never got the chance to help me with my resp because she had no money from the scam these people were pulling on her. she could assist others with their education savings and had all the knowledge, but never enough money for me. i’m 3 years in, and i have over $40k of student loan debt already.
4. they fucked my moms mental health horribly. if i try to talk to her about this job and how it’s impacting her and us, she breaks down. she’s having major “sunk cost fallacy-ism” (or whatever) and everytime she brings it up to her “team leader,” he keeps manipulating her with “you’ve been with us for 15 years, you will be fine. you will have financial freedom for your children.” i really want to strangle this man. my mom gets so emotional everytime i try to tell her she needs to leave, and she even gets emotional when i tell her i will not be using her accounts for my finances. she hasn’t gotten upset that i haven’t joined her, though. i can’t describe it— i think it’s a type of panic where she’s forced to realize how much time she has wasted and she would rather believe it will work out the way it’s going, rather than taking the pivot and moving on. as i said, reminds me of the sunk cost fallacy.

My girlfriend (20F) joined a local company that sells Verizon products by knocking door to door.
It was extremely sketchy from the jump for me. When she applied, it was for a “Customer Service” position and was told she would be working in an office getting paid $1,200 a week. That was in the first interview. By the 3rd interview she is selling Verizon service door to door making commission (no base pay) and within a year she could move up to manager. She had orientation yesterday where they told her within a year she could be a manager and start her own branch even in another state.
Today was her first day, and she has been invited to a conference hundreds of miles away, completely comped with free everything, and she’d be riding with a complete stranger. All of this seems completely off to me, but they are making it seem so appealing to her that she won’t listen to anything I have to say about it.

I need your advice regarding my mum's case with Herbal Life products.
Guys, I genuinely need some advice here, so let me explain the whole story.
My mum got introduced to Herbalife through my bua. For some context, my bua isn't very educated and can be quite easily influenced, so she got into Herbalife first. Before this, she had also introduced my mum to Modicare. I never really had a problem with Modicare itself because I actually liked a couple of their products, especially their multipurpose cleaners and one scrub, but anyway, that's a different story.
My mum was actually looking for some supplements at the time. And knowing my mum, she did what she always does: she researched the hell out of it. 😂 She's one of those people who will research every single medicine prescribed by her doctor, every university, every course, every review, literally everything before making a decision.
During this whole process, she came across Herbalife and also learned about the whole MLM aspect of the business. She knew exactly what she was getting into. My bua kept pressuring her to join, but my mum eventually decided to try a few specific Herbalife products after doing her own research.
She also started attending their classes, but she made one thing very clear to the lady running it. She basically told her, I know what this business is. I'm not going to force my friends, relatives or neighbours to buy anything from me, and I'm definitely not going to ruin my relationships because of some MLM scheme. I only want a few supplements for myself. I'm also going to continue eating all three proper meals every day.
And to be fair, she actually stuck to that. She never replaced her meals with Herbalife.
Over time, she lost quite a bit of weight. But the funny thing is, weight loss was never even her goal. Her attitude was basically, weight kam karke kaunsa mujhe Bollywood jaana hai, mujhe toh bas energetic aur healthy feel karna hai. 😂
She also has cervical spondylosis, but according to her, while she was taking these products, she genuinely felt more energetic and felt that she was getting some other benefits from them as well.
Then I started researching Herbalife myself, and that's when I became concerned. I came across reports and discussions about possible liver problems associated with some Herbalife products, along with some other pretty alarming claims. Obviously, I don't know how credible every claim on the internet is, but enough of it concerned me that I started telling my mum to stop taking them.
Eventually, she did stop.
Now here's where the problem starts.
Since stopping Herbalife, she has been feeling very low on energy, has a lot of body pain and gets tired quite easily. And because she genuinely remembers feeling much more energetic while taking those products, she's now thinking about restarting them.
I'm obviously worried because I don't want her to start taking something again just because she feels it made her energetic, especially when there are concerns about potential side effects.
At the same time, I also don't want to dismiss her experience because she genuinely did feel better while taking them.
So what should I actually do here? Should I convince her not to restart Herbalife and get her health checked properly first, or could there actually be some benefit to her restarting the specific products she was taking?

UK/Manchester: has anyone experienced this “mentorship” approach linked to Amway/Team Mak?
I’m posting about a friend who I’ll call Alexa [20’s, F\] for privacy. This happened in the UK and happened recently.
DISCLAIMER: I’m not accusing anyone of fraud or criminal activity. I’m merely sharing what Alexa experienced, what she later researched, and asking whether anyone else has experienced something similar.
Initial Approach
Alexa works in a store. One day, a female customer complimented something she was wearing (a jewellery piece set), and they got talking. Alexa became particularly interested when she found out the woman worked in a field Alexa wants to enter and which is relevant to her degree. She seemed friendly, they exchanged social media, and within days or weeks they arranged to meet outside work.
First discussion about the opportunity
During that meeting, Alexa was being asked many questions about herself. Like what she does for work, how many hours, the degree, what she wants from life, etc. The woman started discussing another business opportunity she was involved in alongside her full time job. There was talk of entrepreneurship, aims of financial freedom, personal development and successful mentors, with examples of what could supposedly be achieved, but Alexa still couldn’t clearly explain what the actual business was or how people made money from it.
Alexa specifically told her something along the lines of: “Don’t put me onto anything yet. I’d rather we actually build a friendship first and us getting to know each other before you start recommending me for opportunities.” … something like that.
Introduction to the mentor
A couple of days later, the woman messaged saying her mentor had agreed to meet Alexa. Alexa was excited, but also confused. She had literally just asked not to be put forward for anything yet, and somehow she had already been discussed with a mentor and progressed to another meeting. That was her first yellow flag.
Selection and reading assignment
As the meeting continued, there seemed to be an element of being selected/vetted by successful mentors. Alexa was given Robert Kiyosaki’s The Business of the 21st Century to read before one meeting… except Alexa didn’t actually read it. 😭😭
She used ChatGPT to understand the main arguments, network-marketing concepts and general message of the book, then discussed those ideas in the meeting. She knew enough to talk about it generally, but definitely not like somebody who had properly read it.
Passing the apparent vetting process
She was genuinely surprised when she apparently passed/progressed anyway, because she thought it should have been obvious she only understood the basic concepts. In hindsight, that made her wonder what exactly the “vetting” was assessing. Or maybe she was very convincing at making them believe she did read the material.
AMWAY was mentioned
There was this event happening where a lot of people go, I believe it was a conference, Alexa wasn’t clear. That immediately made Alexa more sceptical because she knew of Amway’s association with MLM/network marketing. What bothered her was that the opportunity hadn’t initially been presented simply as “this involves Amway” or even Herbalife! There had instead been a lot of discussion around mentorship, financial freedom, entrepreneurship, building assets and what was described in terms of a cashflow business. Alexa felt that if Amway had been named at the beginning, she could simply have researched it immediately and decided whether she wanted anything to do with it.
After The Event: Team Mak podcasts and the “cult” discussion
She was also given podcasts/audio material through Team Mak, including material involving Dom McKenna. One recording discussed the fact that people had apparently described this kind of environment as a “cult”, REPEATEDLY, before explaining why the speaker disagreed.
The thing is, Alexa hadn’t called it a cult or even considered that word, so hearing them proactively address it made

Screw Southwestern Advantage for exploiting students from overseas and calling a “cultural exchange program”
We just had a young lady from Eastern Europe come to our door selling “educational resources” from Southwestern Advantage. My husband let her in and agreed to look at her stuff. One of the first brochures she showed us notes they are members of the DSA and my red flags went up immediately.
But she was very nice and pleasant to chat with so we listened to her spiel. A couple of the books piqued our interest for our kids but when we got to the price I was knocked over! Over $1100 for the “program.” We asked about just getting the one set we liked and even that was nearly $300 for 12 books. We had to tell her it was a no go but I felt awful for her. She’s riding her bike around in humid, muggy weather on a Sunday with it raining on and off. She said she has to talk to 30 families a day!
I almost felt compelled to buy something because of her situation and how kind she was. (I’m sure she had to pay her way to get to the US and probably expenses while here, at least.) But I also realize that that’s why the company is targeting college students from overseas. They are counting on you feeling like you should help them out. And if I did buy it just perpetuates the system.
Anyway we offered her the use of our restroom and gave her water for the road. Looking back now I wish I had offered her a few bucks cash for her time but didn’t think of it in the moment. I hope at least she’s not significantly financially harmed by this company and her English was incredibly good so maybe she is honing a skill that will help her in the future. I also hope she gets to come back someday and experience real cultural exchange, not working 7 days a week.
Just reminded me that while some of the more ridiculous huns definitely earn their ridicule, these insidious companies really do target vulnerable people who act in good faith and then get screwed.
**I realize that Southwestern Advantage isn’t technically an MLM but dang does there seem to be a lot of overlap in tactics and scamming.

My mom possibly got tricked into the Doterra MLM scheme
My mom’s “functional doctor” set up account on Doterra for her and ordered things for herself snd sent them to our house. When I asked her if she knew what she was getting into, my mom said “she said she’d cancel it right away”. I’m uneasy and skeptical about this women as it is, and I knew it was only a matter of time before she shilled her Doterra MLM on my my mother. How likely is it that her account will be canceled right away? My guess is not that likely or that it’ll be difficult to get out of.

I just got roped into doing a interview with a brokerage company that turned out to be primerica
I just finished doing an interview for a financial brokerage company called level up financial and at the end of it she told me they’re a primerica company…… can I just ghost them from here on out?
She used words like “we can become besties” and “if you have friends talk to them about this.” And the red flags started going off and I immediately knew it was an mlm company.
Now I just feel really dumb for even agreeing to the interview.
Edit: I sent her this message right after I did more research.
“Thanks for reaching out and for taking the time to explain the opportunity.
After giving it some thought and doing a bit of research into the company and its business model, I’ve decided that this is absolutely not something I’m interested in pursuing.
I’m looking for legitimate employment opportunities with clear responsibilities, transparent compensation, and a business model that doesn’t rely on recruiting other people into the same opportunity. What you’re offering simply doesn’t align with what I’m looking for, and I’m not interested in being persuaded otherwise.
So, respectfully, I’m going to pass and I’d appreciate it if you didn’t continue trying to convince me that I’m “missing out,” that I just need to have the right mindset, or that I need to hear the pitch one more time. I’ve heard enough to make an informed decision.
There’s no hard feelings, but my answer is no. Please remove my contact information from your recruitment list and don’t reach out to me again regarding this company or opportunity.

Having to buy MLM product to post on a job board...
So, there is this Facebook group popular in my country, that is meant for women that are looking for jobs, career advice, and such. Very "women supporting women" vibe. Of course, every now and then I saw MLM girlies advertising there, but it is normal in every jobseeking related group I am in, so I didn't pay it much attention. There were hundreds of normal posts from different women, including some that I know irl.
Recently I lost my job and wanted to post that I offer translation and content writing services in the group. Imagine my shock, when my post was rejected and I got a DM from the group admin saying that "to post an offer" on the group I had to "contribute" and "support her running the group"... Accompanied by a link to an aloe vera MLM page of hers.
Apparently, to post a job offer or a "looking for work" post you have to BUY SOMETHING FROM THE ADMIN'S MLM. I did some quick calculations on how many job ads I saw in the group and I was annoyed, but also amazed at how this woman figured out a way to sell her crappy aloe gel...
Anyone seen something like that before? I don't remember the MLM name but they sell aloe vera gels specifically, marketing it as pretty much a miracle treatment for every issue.

ever before. it has ruined the financial futures of my sister and I, and it has ruined her financial future for retirement as well, all because a predatory agent used my moms vulnerability to his advantage, and still uses her to this day.
i love my mom, i really do. i don’t have very harsh feelings towards her because i really see her as a victim. she was a struggling single mother with two kids that came out of violent abuse with no experience in the real world. it hurts me to much to see that this stupid mlm has taken over her life and i have no faith that she will be able to recover from the damage. i think she will be stuck here forever and it hurts so bad. she’s just a mom that was worried for her kids financial futures and she got taken advantage of so brutally. she did what she had to to make ends meet, and it brought her here— just barely above the surface.
if you are a parent who was approached by an agent telling you the same thing—- that you have this opportunity to free your children of financial burdens, please take a moment to look at their lives in 5-10 years if things don’t work out. please don’t take the risk. i wouldn’t wish this on any family. you and your children deserve REAL security. things can work out in this mlm if you can make the scams to climb, but if you are pure-hearted like my mom, and you can’t pester or push or scam, you will get nowhere.
TLDR:

When Did Hiking Trails Become a Place to Recruit MLM Customers?
Was finishing up a hike last weekend, taking some shots of the view before heading back down. My dog was doing his usual thing, being extremely photogenic without trying. A woman stopped to pet him, which is normal, happens all the time on trails.
Within two minutes she had gone from asking about his breed to telling me she works from anywhere she wants and just got back from a retreat in Sedona. I did not ask about any of this. Then came the part about how she sells supplements that help with energy and joint health, and she was looking at my dog when she said the joint health part.
She was pitching pet wellness products through her Plexus business. She handed me a card with her name and a QR code and said something about how people who love the outdoors make the best brand partners because they have an authentic lifestyle.
The trail was the audience. My dog was the prop. I was the lead she was qualifying.
I've noticed this is becoming a specific tactic, finding people midhobby when their guard is down and they're visibly enjoying something. It's harder to brush off when someone just pet your dog. Has anyone else gotten cornered like this, somewhere that felt like a genuinely offlimits context for a sales pitch?

Did anything ever happen regarding the leaked Young Living email?
It's been like 6 months since Hannah Alonzo posted the video about YL allegedly getting rid of the MLM model. I don't follow anyone in the company and haven't heard any other creators talk about them so I don't know if anything has happened. I remember in the video she mentioned there was some kind of conpany-wide live stream type thing, but obviously she had to take the video down so she never posted anything else about it and I have no idea what was said on the stream. I was wondering if anything ever came of that situation. It seems like it was most likely a fake email, but who knows.

Discovery:
She discovered Team Mak’s public connection with Amway and then started reading Reddit, watching YouTube experiences and searching Google.
What really unsettled her wasn’t necessarily the more extreme allegations online, which she obviously can’t verify, but how similar the recruitment process sounded.
She repeatedly found stories resembling:
friendly approach → ambitions/business conversation → financial freedom → successful mentors → mentor meeting → selection/vetting → books → podcasts → personal development → vague business explanation → Amway becoming clear later
Then she found a Reddit post from May 2026 involving Manchester/London where someone described being approached about building a business and financial freedom, being introduced to mentors, meetings/Zooms and educational material, before later saying the organisation was Team Mak and worked with Amway.
That was when Alexa sent me links and said “this is far too similar to what just happened to me🤨”
She eventually withdrew and told the people involved she no longer wanted any further involvement.
Aftermath
The strangest consequence, however, has been what this has done to Alexa’s trust in people. This whole thing began with something as innocent as a stranger complimenting her jewellery. After reading so many similar stories, Alexa has become extremely sceptical of people’s intentions, probably more than is necessary. She’s even caught herself questioning completely unrelated people already in her life at a party. Pulling me aside asking:
“Why are \[they\] being nice to me?
Do \[they\] genuinely want to know me?
Is there something \[they\] eventually want from me?”
She logically knows that most people aren’t secretly trying to recruit her into something. But the experience has temporarily made her analyse ordinary friendliness in a way she never did before. She’s basically on a social hiatus at the moment and doesn’t particularly want new people getting close to her until that feeling settles down. That is probably the part she dislikes most.
Regardless of anybody’s intentions, an interaction that started as “I like your jewellery ” somehow ended with Alexa questioning whether seemingly genuine connections are actually genuine.
So I’m curious:
Has anyone else in in the UK experienced this?
Were you approached casually or befriended first? Were “mentors” introduced before you fully understood the business? Were you given The Business of the 21st Century or Team Mak podcasts? At what point was Amway actually mentioned?
And if you went further than Alexa did: what happened next, what were you eventually expected to pay for, and how were you actually supposed to make money?
