A place for Aryan (European) Folkish Pagans
An example of a man sporting a traditional Slavic style Svyatolav had is Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk

His appearance was as follows: he was of moderate height, neither taller than average, nor particularly short; his eyebrows were thick; he had grey eyes and a snub nose; his beard was clean-shaven, but he let the hair grow abundantly on his upper lip where it was bushy and long; and he shaved his head completely, except for a lock of hair that hung down on one side, as a mark of the nobility of his ancestry; he was solid in the neck, broad in the chest and very well articulated in the rest of his body; he had a rather angry and savage appearance; on one ear was fastened a gold earring, adorned with two pearls with a red gemstone between them; his clothing was white, no different from that of his companions…

At the end of the third century bc, Ptolemy IV Philopator established in Alexandria a shrine to Homer in which the cult image was surrounded by images of the cities which claimed the poet, and a famous late Hellenistic relief (the Apotheosis of Homer) sets Homer, crowned by Time and the Oikoumene (the inhabited world), in parallel with Zeus. If in time ‘divine’ (θεῖος) became a banal description of poets, as it is already a standard epithet of bards in the Odyssey, with Homer the epithet retained its full force.

Adam and Eve once rose from mushrooms and created this world. From mushrooms, from the earth... They grew like mushrooms…That's what I heard, that from mushrooms, from the ground they germinated – a generation is formed forever.
Two mushrooms grew. And one was a man and one was a woman, and then they created a generation…They grew out of the ground, out of the bottom. Man – from mushroom. So our grandmother told us that man was created from mushrooms
While the origin of giants is a mystery with man it’s more clear. Most folk tales claim that God (christianized of course) was involved and threw something on the ground. What that something was differs. Some tales say that God perspired and wiped himself with a cloth which was then thrown on the ground and first people grew out of the earth like mushrooms. Implying the direct connection between humans and the God. Other versions say that the God threw lumps of earth from heaven and those ended up sprouting first humans.

Each tore a huge chunk of rock from nearby mountains with their bare hands and tossed them as a contest. The one whose stone landed further won and settled the land with his people.

Giants, sweat and mushrooms
Even though our sources on the topic are few and far between as well as mostly christianized, a keen eye still can spot the Pagan elements and separate them from the abrahamic veneer.
Done a deep dive into Slavic lore recently. Need to gather my thoughts and write them down. Should be done in a few days.

Paganism and death of the author
Most of you have probably heard of the literary theory called Death of the Author. While it sounds modern and was coined by a 20th c. critic, the idea that the author’s own interpretation of his/her text is irrelevant is ancient and comes from Pagan belief concerning inspiration. For example, Homer wrote The Iliad, but he wasn’t the only one who created the text since the Muses bestowed it on him. A poet is a conduit, a middleman between Gods and men.
That’s why we often see authors misunderstand their own work. Some modern examples include Ray Bradbury, Ridley Scott and Jeorge Lucas.
Of course it doesn’t mean that anyone can be creative, but the source of creativity is outside a man.

Читать полностью…Tale of Bygone Years has another account which matches the previous ones, but is suspicious to me. Supposedly given by volkhvs (Pagan priests) retelling their myth. What those priests say sounds like christian propaganda, probably written by the chronicler himself to make Pagans sound like devil worshippers. They describe their gods as black, winged and tailed creatures who live underground.
Читать полностью…Humans growing out of earth was evidently a very widespread belief in the past since even 19th and late 20th c. sources allude to is albeit without much detail.
1875 text Can God be Denied? by a Czech pastor also alludes to and argues against such folk belief:
So where did man come from...? Did he grow out of the ground like a mushroom after a warm rain, or did he come out of the ground to the surface...? That couldn't have happened and certainly didn't happen, because even now people would have to grow out of the ground...
Next batch of posts will be dedicated to Slavic lore about human origins

Читать полностью…It’s not known how the giants were created and more importantly how they disappeared. A rare few surviving members of that ancient kin can be found in epic and fairy tales, but the race as a whole is extinct. A good example is Svyatogor who is a giant (the last one?) unable and unwilling to live in a human world which is why he kills himself after giving a magical sword and some of his power (but not all of it since that would be too much) to a friend and student Ilja of Murom. The latter ended up beaconing the strongest and most beloved of heroes in the Kyiv Cycle of epic songs (bylina).
Читать полностью…It is implied implied that before humans the world was populated by giants. We might also just say that those were the first humans and just happened to be big and almost immortal, but let’s just call them giants. Unusual geographical locations are often explained to be their handy-work.

Having some health and family issues. Sorry, will try to write soon.
