የአብክመ ትራንስፖርትና ሎጅስቲክስ ቢሮ ምክትል ዋና ዳይሬክተር አቶ ወርቁ ያየህ በመክፈቻ ንግግራቸው እንደገለጹት የትራንስፖርትና ሎጅስቲክስ ባለስልጣን ተቋምን ለማዘመን ከባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ ጋር እጅና ጓንት ሆነን በመስራታችን ዩኒቨርሲቲው የአሽከርካሪ ተሸከርካሪ አገልግሎት አሰጣጣችን በቴክኖሎጅ በተደገፈ ስርአት እንዲሆን በማድረጉምክንያት ከፖሊስና ሌባ እንዲሁም ከጉልበት ስራ ወጥቶ ተቋማችን ትርፋማ እንዲሆን አድርጎታል ብለዋል፡፡
አቶ ወርቁ አክለውም አንዲት ሀገር አድጋለች ከቴክኖሎጅ ጋርም አብራ ተጉዛለች ከተባለ የትራፊክ አደጋ ትርጉም ባለው መንገድ መቀነስ አለበት፡፡ ከማይቀረው እና ተፈጥሯዊ ከሆነው ሞት ውጭ ከፈጣሪ ቀጥሎ ሞትንማምጣትም ሆነ መቀነስ በእጃችን የተሰጠው ለትራንስፖርት ክፍል ነው፡፡ ነገር ግን ሰው መሞት ሳይገባው እየሞተብን ስለሆነ የትራንስፖርት ጉዳይ የጋራ ጉዳያችን አድርገን ቀድመን መከላከል አለብን፤ አደጋን ተከላክለን እናሽከርክር በማለት መልዕክት አስተላልፈዋል፡፡
በመቀጠልም የመንገድ ደህንነትና መድን ፈንድ ክፍል የስልጠና ባለሙያ አቶአበበ አላምራው የዚህ ስልጠና ዓለማ አሽከርካሪዎች በእንቅስቃሴ ወቅት ከአደጋ ሌሎችንም ራሳቸውንም እንዲጠብቁ ለማድረግ ነው በማለት አደጋን ተከላክሎ ማሽከርከር እንዴት ይቻላል? የትራፊክ መቆጣጠሪያ ህግ 557/2016 ምን ይላል? እና ከሦስተኛ ወገን ጋር ተያይዞ554/2016 ደንብ የትራፊክ አደጋ ከተከሰተ በኋላ ጉዳት የደረሰበት ግለሰብ የሚከፈለው በጣም ዝቅ ያለ ስለነበር ተሻሽሎ የቀረበውን ህግ ሰፋ አድርገው ለሰልጣኞች ገለጻ አድርገዋል፡፡
በስልጠናው በተነሱት ሀሳቦች ላይም በሰልጣኞች ውይይት ተደርጎባቸዋል፡፡ በስልጠናው ላይም የዩኒቨርሲቲው ከፍተኛና መካከለኛ አመራሮች፣ መምህራን፣ሹፌሮች፣ ረዳት ሹፌሮች፣ የጥገና ሰራተኞች እና ሌሎች ባለሙያዎችም ተሳትፈዋል፡፡

Bahir Dar University Enhances Driver Safety and Legal Awareness Through Collaborative Training Initiative
BDU, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia (April 14, 2025) – Bahir Dar University, in a proactive commitment to ensuring the safety and legal compliance of its transportation operations, recently conducted a comprehensive training program for its drivers. Held at the University's Wisdom Hall, the initiative was a collaborative effort between the Bahir Dar University Vehicle Maintenance and Transport Directorate, the Training Directorate, the Bahir Dar City Government Development Organization Drivers Unity Association, and the Transport Logistics Authority.
The training focused on critical aspects of road safety and legal frameworks, specifically addressing the Transport and Traffic Control Laws 557/2016 and 554/2016, along with best practices in safe driving. These laws, as amended by the Council of Ministers, were thoroughly reviewed to ensure drivers possess a clear understanding of their responsibilities and the legal implications of their work.
The opening address by Ato Worku Yeyeh, Deputy Director General of the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the Ethiopian Transport and Logistics Authority, underscored the significance of the partnership with Bahir Dar University in modernizing the transport sector. He highlighted the University's role in adopting technology-supported systems for driver and vehicle service provision, leading to increased efficiency, security, and profitability. Ato Worku emphasized the national imperative to reduce traffic accidents, stating, "Apart from the inevitable and natural death, it is the responsibility of the transport department to bring about or reduce death after the Creator...we must drive safely and prevent accidents."
Ato Worku added that if a country has grown and moved forward with technology, traffic accidents must be significantly reduced. He conveyed a message saying that we should drive safely and prevent accidents, emphasizing that while natural death is unavoidable, the transport sector has a responsibility to minimize preventable fatalities. He stressed the importance of making transportation a common issue to prioritize safety.
The training fostered an interactive environment, with participating drivers actively engaging in discussions and raising pertinent questions. The event saw significant representation from various departments within the university, including senior and middle management, faculty, drivers, assistant drivers, maintenance personnel, and other relevant experts, demonstrating the institution's holistic approach to safety and compliance.
Bahir Dar University Holds Partnership Discussion with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)

April 11/2017 (Bahir Dar University) Bahir Dar University held a partnership discussion with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to work together on the war caused problems of unemployment, education quality, access to energy and technology for rural communities, and the health of children and mothers.
During the discussion, Bahir Dar University’s Research Affairs Corporate Director and the coordinator of the discussion, Professor Netsanet Fantahun, explained Bahir Dar University’s collaborative engagements in areas of teaching and research with international partners and institutions, including the future joint works with UNICEF. The professor said that in order to fulfil its responsibility of scientifically solving societal problems, Bahir Dar University with its rich experience of coordinating projects, in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), agreed to work on matters of the region’s child and maternal health, the returning of more than 4.5 million children to school, the health and nutrition problems seen in the region, expanding access to energy and technology for the vast rural community, and the problems related to training and job creation.
Saifeldin Nemir, Chief of Field Office of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), said that UNICEF agreed to collaborate on the aforementioned areas, recognizing Bahir Dar University as a well-established institution in research and teaching, and one that is closely connected to the community it serves.
Bahir Dar University’s President Dr. Mengesha Ayene underscored the University’s good record of coordinating various projects at both the national and regional levels. Dr. Mengesha added a collaborative effort between the two institutions on shared themes will significantly accelerate the achievement of their most highly aspired common goals. At the end of the discussion, Professor Netsanet Fantahun, emphasized that a memorandum of understanding outlining the agreed themes will be prepared, followed by a signing ceremony in the presence of representatives from the federal government, UNICEF, and regional authorities.

Water and Development Partnership Programme
(Remote Sensing Applications for Community Development, RS-4C Project)
As part of the Water and Development Partnership Programme, we are offering 15 fellowships for MSc studies at IHE Delft to staff members of our partner organizations in the focus regions of the program.
These fellowships can be used for either a one-year Master's program or a two-year Research Master's in Water and Sustainable Development. This opportunity aims to strengthen the capacity of our partner organizations and directly contribute to the Water and Development Partnership Programme, as the MSc fellows will conduct their thesis research as part of your project.

Bahir Dar University Hosts Constructive Panel Discussion on Transforming Research and Innovation into Commercial Ventures
BDU, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, (April 4, 2025) Bahir Dar University (BDU), guided by its Office of the Vice President for Research and Community Engagement, organized a productive half-day panel discussion on April 4, 2025. This event focused on actionable strategies to effectively connect academic research, innovation, and business development. Held in the university auditorium, it brought together a vibrant mix of faculty, students, and senior administrators, encouraging a rich dialogue aimed at enhancing Ethiopia’s innovation landscape.
Professor Nigus Gabie, Director of Community Engagement and Industry Networking at BDU, provided an insightful keynote address, highlighting the university’s commitment to transforming research into viable market solutions. “Our institution has generated numerous research projects that tackle societal challenges. To stay competitive, we must prioritize business models that unlock the commercial potential of these innovations,” he emphasized. Professor Gabie showcased BDU’s proactive approach in creating specialized centers focused on commercialization, such as the BiTec and EDIC Entrepreneurship Product Prototyping and Business Center, the STEM Innovation and Talent Identification Center, the CDC and ELIC Career Development and Employability Center, and Living Labs dedicated to sustainable energy innovation.
These initiatives aim to nurture entrepreneurial talent, accelerate product development, and strengthen collaborative industry partnerships.
Esteemed panelists, including Professor Enyew Adgo, Professor Seifu Admasu, Professor Tamrat Tesfaye, and Dr. Fikresalam Gared, engaged in a constructive discussion about the barriers and opportunities in research commercialization. Moderated by Dr. Amare Kassaw, Startup Director, the dialogue highlighted budgetary constraints as a significant challenge in scaling research into successful enterprises. The panelists advocated for the need for clear institutional objectives, mission alignment, and sustained commitment to foster university-industry collaboration, drawing lessons from global best practices and adaptive strategies that can help navigate Ethiopia’s unique socio-economic landscape.
The panelists collectively affirmed the dual role of universities as knowledge hubs and economic catalysts. “Standing still due to fear of challenges is not an option. We must face obstacles directly to make a positive societal impact,” noted Professor Seifu Admasu.
The discussion reinforced BDU’s vision of incorporating social responsibility into its commercialization efforts. Panelists called for a focus on community-centered services and sustainable value creation rather than short-term profits. Faculty were encouraged to broaden their roles beyond traditional academic publishing, taking on mentorship of entrepreneurs, advising startups, and directly engaging in transforming research into market-ready solutions.

Onion Post-harvest Management Technology Introduced

February 27/2017 (Bahir Dar University)
Bahir Dar University IUC Project (BDU-IUC) presented a technology that prevents post-harvest loss of onion and that preserve it for months in the presence of farmers and agricultural experts from different kebeles in Fogera Woreda, South Gondar Zone, on the occasion of Farmers' Day. The project leaders, farmers, teachers and researchers concerned with the matter at the university, and other stakeholders were present at the Bahir Dar University Institute of Technology campus.
Speaking at the event, Professor Melkamu Alemayehu, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at Bahir Dar University, said that the BDU-IUC project, a sub-project of the Food Production and Post-harvest Management System, has been working on onion post-harvest management technology for more than five years; he said that the main objective of the day’s program is to introduce a research based technology that reduces the post-harvest losses of onion to partner organizations.
Bahir Dar University’s Vice President for Research and Community Engagement, Professor Enyew Adgo, said that using improved onion varieties to reduce post-harvest losses of onion, drying the product through technology, and distributing improved onion varieties in the form of seedlings to farmers will reduce post-harvest losses.
Professor Enyew added that if farmers are continuously educated about the careful production of onions and if post-harvest losses can be reduced, farmers can not only benefit themselves but also provide the community with better production.
On the occasion of Farmers' Day, Dr. Aynadis Molla, a lecturer in the Department of Food and Chemical Engineering, presented a research paper titled "Onion Post-harvest Loss and Causes in Ethiopia" at the Technology Awareness Program on Onion Post-harvest Management.
In addition, farmers and agricultural experts visited Mr. Andualem Wasihun’s innovation, solar-powered greenhouse dryer which can be used for onion curing, and tomato production during winter.
Finally, discussion was held based on questions from farmers and agricultural experts regarding the research papers presented and the design of a solar-powered greenhouse dryer for onion curing technology.

Ministry of Education holds talks with university officials

Ministry of Education’s higher education development sector team held talks with leaders from all campuses of the university at the President’s meeting Hall to monitor and support the implementation of the 2024/25 key performance indicators/ KPI of higher education institutions.
Opening the discussion, Dr. Mengesha Ayene (PhD), Bahir Dar University President, said that the team from the Ministry of Education will assess where we are since we started our work, the experiences and successes garnered; in addition, they will provide a general analysis of the problems Bahir Dar University has faced, how it can solve them on its own, and how it can get support from the government. The President expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education for its follow-up and anticipated support. Noting that Bahir Dar University is in the process of becoming an autonomous research university, the President urged the Ministry to take this into consideration and provide objective feedback on the University's readiness for the autonomy.
The discussion paper was presented by Dr. Abunu, the Research and Development Representative under the Executive Director of Research and Community Engagement of the Ministry of Education. The main purpose of the 2017 E.C. monitoring KPI of higher education institutions is to identify the progress of the key performance indicators that they have agreed to achieve by the end of the year; to identify the level of implementation achieved by creating understanding with the community and stakeholders of the institution; and to create a capacity to achieve the agreed goals in a better way. The participants of the discussion also expressed their views by listing the key points that should have been include in the presented paper.

Bahir Dar University School of Law Partners with UNODC and EU to Enhance Access to Justice
BDU, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia (April 10, 2025) Bahir Dar University's School of Law has been selected by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the European Union (EU) to implement a significant project aimed at improving access to justice within the criminal justice system. This collaborative initiative will provide crucial free legal aid services to vulnerable populations in the region, including the poor, women, and other marginalized groups.
The primary objective of this impactful project is to dismantle barriers to justice and ensure that all individuals, regardless of their socio-economic status or background, have access to legal representation and support. By offering free legal aid, the Bahir Dar University School of Law, in partnership with UNODC and the EU, seeks to empower individuals navigating the complexities of the criminal justice system and uphold their fundamental rights.

BDU Enhances Postgraduate Research Capacity with Specialized Training
BDU, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia (April 9, 2025) Bahir Dar University (BDU) has successfully concluded a comprehensive 7-day training program designed to bolster the research capabilities of its postgraduate students. The initiative, spearheaded by the University's Directorate of Training in collaboration with the Department of Postgraduate Studies, underscores BDU's commitment to fostering a robust research environment as a leading research institution.
The intensive training, held from March 31 to April 8, 2025, equipped postgraduate students from diverse academic disciplines with essential skills in R-software, a powerful tool for statistical computing and graphics. Key topics covered included the fundamentals of R-software, data management techniques, descriptive statistics, exploratory data analysis, data visualization, and linear regression.
The Director of the Training Directorate at Bahir Dar University, Ato Worku Abebe, emphasized the strategic importance of the program. "As a research university, it is paramount that we continuously enhance the capacity of our researchers," he stated. "This training will significantly empower our postgraduate students to rigorously analyze their dissertations using scientific methods, ultimately contributing to the quality and impact of their research."
The training was expertly delivered by instructors from the Department of Statistics. Previously, the university had also trained 98 postgraduate students in Advanced R-software, organized into four distinct groups, demonstrating a sustained focus on developing advanced analytical skills within the postgraduate community.
Dereje Tesfaye, a lecturer in the Department of Statistics who participated in the training, highlighted the potential impact of this initiative. "We encourage the trainees to actively utilize this software in their research and publications," he noted. "If the entire university community, particularly those engaged in research, receives such training, it will undoubtedly elevate Bahir Dar University's international standing and recognition."
The successful completion of the program was marked by a certificate presentation ceremony. Ato Worku Abebe presented certificates to the participating postgraduate students, acknowledging their dedication to enhancing their research skills.
This strategic training initiative reflects Bahir Dar University's ongoing commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and the development of highly skilled postgraduate researchers who will contribute significantly to their respective fields and the advancement of knowledge.
