Bahir Dar University today on June 21, 2025 graduates 6,174 students. Among the graduates, 1,715 are female students. This year also marks the graduation of the university’s first bachelor's degree holders in Data Science and Cyber-security.
Among the total graduates, 111 students will receive PhD degrees, and 182 will be awarded Master's degrees. In the field of medicine, 90 doctors will graduate in various specialties, including 8 in subspecialties.

የ3ኛ ዲግሪ ተመራቂዎች በክብር እንግዳው ዶ/ር አህመዲን መሐመድ እና የዩኒቨርስቲው ፕሬዚደንት ዶ/ር መንገሻ አየነ በሬጅስትራሩ ዋና ዳይሬክተሩ ዶ/ር አለማየሁ ቢሻው አቅሪቢነት በመመረቅ ላይ ናቸው::

ባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ ነገ ሰኔ 14/2017ዓ/ም 6174 ተማሪዎችን ያስመርቃል። ከተመራቂዎች ውስጥ 1715 ተማሪዎች ሴቶች ናቸው። ዩኒቨርሲቲው ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ በዳታ ሳይንስ እና በሳይበር ደህንነት በመጀመሪያ ዲግሪ ያሰለጠናቸውን ተማሪዎች ያስመርቃል።
አጠቃላይ ከሚመረቁ ተማሪዎች ውስጥ 111 ተማሪዎች በዶክትሬት የሚመረቁ ናቸው። በህክምናው ዘርፍ ደግሞ 90 ሐኪሞች በስፔሻሊቲ 8 ሐኪሞች በሰብ ስፔሻሊቲ ይመረቃሉ።

በ2017 ዓ/ም ለሚመረቁ ተማሪዎች የስራ ተኮር ምክር አገልግሎት ስልጠና መስጠት ተጀመረ
ሚያዚያ 27/2017 ዓ.ም፣ (ባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ-ባዳዩ)የባሕር
ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ የስልጠና ዳይሬክቶሬት ከዩኒቨርሲቲው ዉጤታማ ትግበራ ክፍል ጋር በመተባበር የአሰልጣኞች ስልጠና በወሰዱ መምህራን አማካኝነት የስራ ተኮር ምክር አገልግሎት ስልጠና ለሶሻል ሳይንስ፤ ለቢዝነስና ኢኮኖሚክስ ፤ለግብርናና አከባቢ ሳይንስ ኮሌጅ እና ለትምህርት ኮሌጅ ተመራቂ ተማሪዎች ለ 3 ተከታታይ ቀናት የሚቆይ ስልጠና ለመጀመርያ ዙር 576 ተማሪዎች ስልጠናው መስጠት ተጀመረ ፡፡
በየአመቱ ለሚመረቁ ተማሪዎች በዩኒቨርሲቲ ቆይታቸው ካካበቱት እውቀት በተጨማሪ እራሳቸውን ለመቻል በሚያደርጉት ሂደት ስራ እንዴት ይፈልጋሉ፣ የስራ ቃለ መጠይቅ ስርዓትና አፃፃፍ፣ ወደ ስራ በሚገቡበት ስዓት በምን መልኩ መስራት እንዳለባቸው፣ በኦንላይን እንዴት ስራ መፈለግ ይችላሉ እና የስራ ማመልከቻ ለመፃፍ የሚያስችሉ የስራ ተኮር ምክር አገልግሎት ስልጠና መስጠት መጀመሩን የዩኒቨርሲቲዉ የስልጠና ዳይሬክቶሬት ዳይሬክተር አቶ ወርቁ አበበ ገልፀዋል፡፡
አቶ ወርቁ አክለውም በቀጣዩም በሁሉም ግቢዎች ለተመራቂ ተማሪዎች ስልጠናዉ በተያዘለት መርሃ ግብር መሰረት የሚሰጥ መሆኑን አሳዉቀዋል፡፡

ሚያዚያ 25/2017 ዓ.ም፣ (ባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ-ባዳዩ) የባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ የሕክምናና ጤና ሳይንስ ኮሌጅ በጤናው ዘርፍ ያሰለጠናቸውን 89 የስፔሻሊቲ ሐኪሞች 2በሰብ ስፔሻሊቲ 64 የማስትርስ ድግሪ እና 178 በመጀመሪያ ድግሪ በድምሩ 333 ተማሪዎችን የባሕርዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ የቦርድ አባል እና የጥበበጊዮን ስፔሻላይዝድ ሆስፒታል የቦርድ ሰብሳቢ የተከበሩ ወ/ሮ አስቴር ዘውዴ በዋናው ግቢ የመሰብሰቢያ አዳራሽ በድምቀት አስመርቋል፡፡
በምረቃ ስነ-ስርዓቱ ላይ ተገኝተው የእንኳን ደህና መጣችሁ ንግግር ያደረጉት የባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፕሬዚዳንት ዶ/ር መንገሻ አየነ ዛሬ የመጀመሪያ የስኬት ምዕራፋችሁን በማጠናቀቅ ለዚህ ታላቅ ቀን በቅታችኋል ያሉት ፕሬዚዳንቱ በባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ ማህበረሰብ ስም የእንኳን ደስ ያላችሁ መልዕክት አስተላልፈዋል፡፡ ፕሬዚዳንቱ አክለውም ተመራቂ ተማሪዎች ባሳለፋችሁት በርካታ የዕንቅልፍ አልባ ሌሊቶች ሁሉ እናንተን በግል በማገዝ ከጎናችሁ ሆነው ያበረታቱ ቤተሰቦችን ፣ በጥበብ እና በጥንካሬ ከጎናችሁ ሆነው ላገዟችሁ እና መንገድ ላመላከቷችሁ ብርቱ መምህራን፣ አማካሪ ፕሮፌሰሮች እና ለአስተዳደር ሰራተኞች የምስጋና መልዕክት አስተላልፈዋል፡፡ የባሕርዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ ለበርካታ ዓመታት ዓለማቀፍ ተማሪዎችን ተቀብሎ በማስተማር እና በማስመረቅ በተደጋጋሚ ዓለማቀፋዊነቱን አሳይቷል፡፡ በዛሬው እለትም በህክምናው ዘርፍ ሁላት ሴት እና ሁለት ወንድ በድምሩ አራት የደቡብ ስዳን ተማሪዎችን ማስመረቁን ተናግረዋል፡፡
በተማሪዎች የምረቃ ስነ-ርዓት ላይ የዕለቱ የክብር እንግዳ የሆኑት የባሕርዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ የቦርድ አባል እና የጥበበ ጊዮን ስፔሻላይዝድ ሆስፒታል የቦርድ ሰብሳቢ የተከበሩ ወ/ሮ አስቴር ዘውዴ በበኩላቸው ለአመታት የደከማችሁበትን ውጤት አሳክታችሁ ለዚህ ክብር በመድረሳችሁ የእንኳን ደስያላችሁ መልዕክት አስተላልፈዋል፡፡ በዛሬው እለት በተለያዬ የጤና ሳይንስ መርሃ ግብሮች በህክምና ስፔሻሊቲ እና ሰብ ስፔሻሊቲ ድግሪ የምትመረቁ ውድ ተማራቂ ተማሪዎች በትምህርት ቆይታችሁ የቀሰማችሁትን እውቀት የተቀበላችሁትን ክህሎት እና የበጎ አመለካከት ጓዝ አድርጋችሁ በተግባር ወገናችሁን ወደምታገለግሉበት ዓለም እየገባችሁ ነው ሲሉ ተናግረዋል፡፡
በመሆኑም የህዝባችንን ጤና ለማሻሻልና ህይወትን ለማዳን ከመቼውም ጊዜ በላይ በቁርጠኝነት፣ በቅንነት እና በታማኝነት ልታገለግሉ ይገባል ሲሉ የተከበሩ ወ/ሮ አስቴር ዘውዴ ተናግረዋል፡፡ በ21ኛወ ክፍለዘመን እጅግ ውስብስብ ችግሮች እና እድሎች ያሉበት ጊዜ በመሆኑ የእድሎችን ቀጣይነት ባለው የመማር ልምምድ ውስጥ እንድትሆኑ አደራ በማለት ከትምህርት እና ከፈተና በተጨማሪ በከባቢያዊና ሀገራዊ ችግሮች ውስጥ አልፋችሁ ለዚህ ክብር በመብቃታችሁ በድጋሜ እንኳን ደስ ያላችሁ ብለዋል፡፡ የተከበሩ ወ/ሮ አስቴር አክለውም በቀጣይ የህይወት ትምህርት ቤት ውስጥ በጥልቅ ማሰብን፣ ጥበብን ትጋትን እና በፈተና ጎልብታችሁ እንድትወጡ እየተመኜሁ፤ በሙያ እድገታችሁ እና ቀጣይ ትምህርታችሁ ውስጥ ሀገር በቀል ውስብስብ ፈተናዎችን ብሎም አህጉር እና አለማቀፍ እድሎችን በመጠቀም ሀገርን የምትጠቅሙ ዓለማቀፍ ባለሙያዎች እንድትሆኑ ሲሉ ለተመራቂዎች መልዕክት አስተላልፈዋል፡፡
ዕለቱ በማሕጸን እና በፅንስ ስፔሻሊቲ እና የማህፀን ካንሰር ሰብ ስፔሻሊቲ ትምህርታቸውን የጠናቀቁ ዶ/ር ዋለልኝ ክንዴ እና ዶ/ር ምርጥዘር በቀለ ከባህር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ አካዳሚክ ም/ፕሬዚዳንት ከፕሮፌሰር እሰይ ከበደ እና የህክምናና ጤና ሳይንስ ኮሌጅ ዲን ዶ/ር በቃሉ ውብሽት እጅ የእውቅና ሽልማት ተበርክቶላቸዋል፡፡
በመጨረሻም በኮሌጁ የላቀ ውጤት ላስመዘገቡ ተመራቂ ተማሪዎች ለአንሙት አምባዬ እና ለተማሪ ኤደን ያለው የሜዳሊያ እና የእውቅና የምስክር ወረቀት መርሃ ግብር ተካሂዷል፡፡

የባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ ቴክኖሎጂ ኢንስቲትዩት "ሕይወት ከምረቃ በኋላ" የተሰኘ የውይይት መድረክ ለተመራቂ ተማሪዎች አዘጋጀ፡፡ የመርሃ-ግብሩ ዋና አላማ ተማሪዎች ከዩኒቨርሲቲ በኋላ ላለው ህይወት ራሳቸውን እንዴት ማዘጋጀት እንደሚችሉ፣ በገብያው ላይ ስላሉ የስራ አማራጮች እና ወደ ስራ አለም ሲቀላቀሉ ሊገጥሟቸው ስለሚችሉ እውነታዎች ግንዛቤ እንዲያገኙ ታስቦ የተዘጋጀ ነው፡፡
በመርሃ-ግብሩ ላይ የዩኒቨርሲቲው ፕሬዝዳንት ዶ/ር መንገሻ አየነ እና የአመልድ ዋና ሥራ አስፈጻሚ ዶ/ር አለማየሁ ዋሴ በውይይቱ ተገኝተው ለተመራቂ ተማሪዎች የሕይወት ተሞክሯቸውን አካፍለዋል፡፡
ዶ/ር መንገሻ ለተማሪዎች ልምዳቸውን ያካፈሉት ከዶ/ር አለማየሁ ዋሴ ጋር በተጋበዙበት መድረክ ሲሆን የፖሊ ግቢ ተማሪዎች ህብረት ከግቢው ስራ ሃላፊዎች ጋር በመተባበር ነው።
ሁለቱ አካላት ተማሪዎች ከተመረቁ በኃላ ሊኖራቸው የሚገባውን አጋጣሚ ከራሳቸው የህይወት ተሞክሮ ጋር በማዛመድ በ2017 ዓ.ም በዩኒቨርሲቲው ለሚመረቁ ተማሪዎች በፖሊ ግቢ ዋሸራ አዳራሽ የህይወት መንገዳቸውን አካፍለዋል፡፡
የመድረኩ ዓላማ ተመራቂዎች ከምረቃ በኋላ ስለሚያጋጥማቸው ሁኔታና የመውጫ መንገዶች፣ በሙያቸውና ከሙያቸው ውጭ በገሀዱ አለም ከዩኒቨርስቲ ውጭ ምን ሊያጋጥማቸው እንደሚችልና ከወዲሁ የአእምሮ ዝግጅት እንዲያደርጉ ለማስተማር ነው።
በ1984 አለማያ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በተፈጥሮ ሀብት ትምህርት ክፍል በጥሩ ውጤት የተመረቁት ዶ/ር አለማየሁ ዋሴ ከምረቃ በኃላ ስራ ለማግኘት የሄዱበትን ውጣ ውረድ በማስታወስ ‹‹ ህንፃ ወደ ላይ ከመገንባቱ በፊት መጀመሪያ ወደ ታች ተቆፍሮ ይሰራል›› ህይወታቸውም በዚህ መንገድ እንዳለፈ ተናግረዋል፡፡
ዶ/ር አለማየሁ ዋሴ ተማሪዎች የወደፊት ህይወታቸው በፈተና እና በፅናት ማለፍን እንደሚጠይቅ መገንዘብ እንዳለባቸው ሁሉንም ትክክለኛ አማራጭ እንዲጠቀሙ ገልፅዋል፡፡ ነገር ግን አግባብ ያልሆነ አቋራጭ መንገድ ለሚያስቡ በራሳቸው ያጋጠማቸውን ተሞክሮ ሲያካፍሉ ‹‹ አንዳንዶቹ እኛ ወደ ላይ ስንወጣ እነሱ ሲወርዱ አገኘናቸው›› ሲሉ ትክክለኛ ባልሆነ መንገድ ህይወትን መጀመር ዋጋ እንደሚያስከፍል ገልፀዋል፡፡ ለተማሪዎችም ሲመክሩ እንዳሉት ሁልጊዜም ዝቅ ብሎ መጀመር ለለውጥ እጅግ በርካታ ትምህርት እንደሚያስገኝ መክረዋል።
ዶ/ር መንገሻ በበኩላቸው እሳቸው ዩኒቨርሲቲ በገቡበት ዘመን ትንሽ ተማሪ በሚቀበልበት ባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ BIT የገቡ መሆኑን አውስተው በስራ ፍለጋው ዛሬ እንደድሮው እንዳልሆነና ተመራጭ ለመሆን ጠንክሮ መስራትን፣ መጻዒው ዘመን ከነባሩ ዓለም ፍጹም ወደተለየ ልማድና አኗኗር በፍጥነት ስለሚለወጥ ለዚህ ራስን ማዘጋጀት ይደር የማይባል መሆኑን ለእጩ ምሩቃኑ መክረዋል።
ፕሬዚዳንቱ ለተማሪዎች የባሕርዳር ዩኒቨርስቲ የአልሙናይ ማህበርን እንዲቀላቀሉም ግብዣ አቅርበዋል።
ተማሪዎች የቀረበላቸውን ልምድና ተሞክሮ ካዳመጡ በኋላ ጥያቄዎችን ለእንግዶች በማቅረብ ሰፊ ምክክር አድርገዋል።
የምረቃ በዓሉን ደማቅ የሚያደርጉ የቅድመ ዝግጅት ሁኔታዎች ተጠናቀዋል።
እንግዶቻችን፣ የተመራቂ ተማሪዎቻችን ቤተሰቦች ወደውቢቷ ባሕርዳር ከተማ ገብተዋል። ነገ ሰኔ 14/2017ዓ/ም በደማቅ ስነ-ስርዓት 6174 ተማሪዎች ይመረቃሉ።

Student Feven Gurju Awigchew, a Cyber Security student from the Faculty of Computing, has emerged as a shining star. With an outstanding CGPA of 4.00, achieved with only one A- grade across her entire four-year study, Mss. Feven exemplifies excellence, determination, and brilliance.

በመደበኛው መርሃ ግብር ብቻ ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ ከተፈተኑት 96.11% አልፈዋል!
ባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ የመውጫ ፈተና የመጀመሪያ ጊዜ በሰጠባቸው 77 ፕሮግራሞች 46 ትምህርት ክፍሎች 100% ተማሪዎችን ማሳለፍ ችለዋል፡፡
አንጋፋው የዩኒቨርሲቲያችን ባሕር ዳር ቴክኖሎጂ ኢንስቲትዩት-ፖሊ ካስፈተናቸው ተማሪዎች ውስጥ ከ3 ተማሪዎች በስተቀር ሁሉም ተማሪዎች አልፈዋል!
ዩኒቨርሲቲያችን በመደበኛው መርሃ ግብር ብቻ ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ ከተፈተኑት 96.11% ያለፉ ሲሆን ከአጠቃለይ በሁሉም ምርሃ-ግብሮች ማለትም በመደበኛ፣ በተከታታይ፣ በክረምትና በርቀት መርሃ ግብሮች ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ ከተፈተኑት ውስጥ 94.4% ተፈታኞች በትምህርት ሚኒስቴር የተሰጠውን የከፍተኛ ትምህርት መውጫ ፈተና አልፈዋል፡፡
ባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ በ Cyber Security እና በ Data Science በሁለት ትምህርት ክፍሎች በኢትዮጵያ በመጀመሪያ ምሩቃንነት ዘንድሮ ተማሪዎችን ያስመርቃል፡፡
በእነዚህ ትምህርት ክፍሎች ፈተናውን የወሰዱ ሁሉም ተማሪዎች የመውጫ ፈተናውን አልፈዋል፡፡ በዚህም ለአገራችን የዘርፉን የመጀመሪያዎቹ ምሩቃን ባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ በዚህ ዓመት የሚያበረክት ይሆናል፡፡

Bahir Dar University Celebrates Exceptional Achievement in National Exit Exams

Bahir Dar, Ethiopia (June 19, 2025) – Bahir Dar University (BDU) is proud to announce its students' outstanding performance in the recently administered national higher education exit exams by the Ministry of Education. These remarkable results underscore the dedication of BDU students and the high caliber of education provided by our institution.
A stellar 96.11% of students enrolled in regular programs who took the exit exam for the first time successfully passed. When considering all programs combined (regular, continuing, summer, and distance), BDU first-time exit exam takers achieved an impressive 94.4% pass rate.
BDU is especially delighted to report that 46 departments across 77 programs achieved a perfect 100% pass rate for students taking the exit exam for the first time. This significant accomplishment reflects consistent excellence across a broad spectrum of disciplines within Bahir Dar University.
Furthermore, the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology-Poly, BDU's esteemed oldest institution, achieved a near-perfect success rate, with all but three students passing their exit exams.
Adding to BDU's pioneering achievements, Bahir Dar University is poised to graduate the first-ever students in Ethiopia in the fields of Cyber Security and Data Science this year. BDU confirms that all students who took the exit exam in these groundbreaking departments passed, marking our university's contribution of inaugural graduates in these vital fields to the nation.
This exceptional success is a powerful testament to the diligent efforts of our students, the unwavering commitment of our faculty, and the supportive academic environment fostered at Bahir Dar University.

Sustainable Water Solutions in Motion for Lake Tana Basin

On April 28, 2017 (Bahir Dar University) Bahir Dar University’s BDU-IUC Project Ground Water Ecosystem Sub-Project hosted a stakeholders’ dissemination workshop on Sustainable Solutions for the Management of Aquatic Resources in the Lake Tana Basin at Wisdom Hall.
Dr. Tesfaye Shiferaw, the BDU-IUC Project Coordinator, outlined the project's purpose, its activities to date, and the progress achieved so far. He highlighted that the BDU-IUC project has led to the development of various community-benefiting technologies. Additionally, he said that research has been conducted on the wetlands and fish species in the Lake Tana sub-basin.
Dr. Tesfaye added that although the project focuses on various areas that benefit farmers economically, the desired results have not yet been achieved due to lack of participation of stakeholders in finding sustainable solutions for water resource management in the Lake Tana basin. Therefore, he said that stakeholders in the region should come together with sense of belongingness and save the biodiversity and wetlands of Tana from danger.
During the discussion, Professor Mulugeta Kibret, team lead of the Water and Ecology Sub-Project under the BDU-IUC Project of Bahir Dar University, gave an overview of the overall project activities, including research on wetlands and fish species. At the workshop, Dr. Ayalew Wonde, a researcher on the project, presented a research paper titled “state of wetland degradation and management in lake Tana basin”. In his presentation, Dr. Ayalew noted that the wetlands of Lake Tana are being severely damaged due to various natural and man-made factors. He added a coordinated effort involving multiple stakeholders under the auspices of one institution should be undertaken to overcome this problem.
On the other hand, Dr. Wonde Zelalem, a researcher at the Water and Ecosystem Sub-Project, under a study titled “Spawning movement, breeding and nursery habitat use of the migratory labeobarbus species of Lake Tana: implication for future population” stated the presence of 27 species of fish in Lake Tana and that these fish are at risk of extinction due to illegal fishing during their breeding season, which is from August to September. Dr. Wonde indicated in his study that it is appropriate to reduce the fishing process in the breeding area, conduct awareness-raising schemes for fishermen, and determine the standards of fishing nets to prevent the extinction of these fish species.
Similarly, Dr. Bayeh Abera, a researcher of the Water and Ecosystem Sub-Project, presented a research paper titled “Pesticide Residues in Surface Waters (River, Wetland, Lake) and their Presence in the Districts of Lake Tana Basin.” Dr. Bayeh stated that the use of pesticides and herbicides impact the life of ground and aquatic biodiversity and humans. He pointed out that pesticides and herbicides that are banned from use globally are being in use, and that control measures should be taken before it seriously damages aquatic biodiversity and humans.
Stakeholders from various regional offices shared their extensive views on the research papers presented. It was also stated that this workshop will be organized in the form of a conference in the future to bring about sustainable and inclusive solutions.
In conclusion, participants emphasized the importance of collective action—calling on all stakeholders to pool resources and efforts to safeguard the sustainable and healthy use of water in Lake Tana, its inflowing rivers, and the surrounding wetlands. The workshop wrapped up with a closing address by Prof. Mulugeta Kibret, coordinator of the sub-project.
The conference was attended by teachers and researchers and stakeholders from relevant Amhara regional offices.

Bahir Dar University Honors Legacy of Dr. Andualem Dagne with Monument and Department Naming
BDU, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia (27 April 2025) In a moving ceremony filled with reverence and pride, Bahir Dar University paid tribute to the late Dr. Andualem Dagne, the trailblazing surgeon who performed the first surgery at Tbebe Gion Specialized Hospital. Led by University President Dr. Mengesha Ayene, the event marked the laying of the foundation stone for a memorial monument in front of the hospital and the official naming of its surgery department in Dr. Andualem’s honor.
The newly christened "ዶ/ር አንዷለም ዳኜ ቀዶ ሕክምና ክፍል | Dr. Andualem Dagne Operation Theatre" stands as a testament to his groundbreaking contributions to medicine and his unwavering dedication to patient care. This historic recognition follows resolutions passed by the Bahir Dar University Senate, ensuring that his legacy endures for generations to come.
The ceremony also commemorated Dr. Andualem’s 80th Day Memorial Event, bringing together his family, colleagues, university leaders, and medical professionals. A special Dr. Amdualem Dagne Biography and Testimonial magazine, chronicling his life and achievements, was unveiled during the event, further immortalizing his impact on healthcare and education.
In his address, President Dr. Mengesha Ayene praised Dr. Andualem’s visionary leadership and surgical excellence, which laid the foundation for the hospital’s success. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to upholding his legacy through meaningful tributes and continued support for his family.
In line with this commitment, Bahir Dar University has appointed Dr. Andualem’s wife, a qualified academic, as a lecturer at the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, ensuring that his family remains an integral part of the institution he served so diligently.
The event was graced by senior university officials, medical professionals, and community members, all united in celebrating the life of a man whose work transformed healthcare in the region. Once completed, the memorial monument will serve as a lasting symbol of Dr. Andualem Dagne’s enduring influence on Bahir Dar University and Ethiopian medicine.
Bahir Dar University Spearheads Early Childhood Development Study in Amhara Region
BDU, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia (Late Post) – Bahir Dar University (BDU), in collaboration with the African Center for Early Childhood Development (AFC-ECD), has initiated a significant “Early Childhood Development Study” in the Amhara Region. A workshop was recently convened at Avante Blue Nile Hotel Resort, bringing together key stakeholders to mark the commencement of this crucial research endeavor.
The workshop was held under the auspices of Dr. Mengesha Ayene, President of Bahir Dar University, who underscored the institution's strong track record in conducting impactful research. Dr. Mengesha expressed his enthusiasm for BDU's research team being entrusted with this vital project for the Amhara Region. He highlighted the university's existing capacity and experience, citing the ongoing USAID-funded national project on disaster risk and management involving 11 regions and 10 universities, as evidence of BDU's ability to effectively coordinate and lead such comprehensive studies.
"Bahir Dar University possesses the capacity and experience to coordinate and lead any capacity available in the region, making a quality study entirely possible," stated Dr. Mengesha. He further charged the university's team of scientists to prioritize data quality, ensure a diverse and expert composition, and remain mindful of the profound implications the study's findings will have for the people of the Amhara region throughout the entire research process, from data collection to analysis.
Professor Netsanet Fentahun, a Professor at Bahir Dar University and a key member of the research team, presented a preliminary overview of the early childhood development landscape in the Amhara region. The study's objectives include a comprehensive assessment of current early childhood development outcomes, an evaluation of child nutrition levels, an analysis of the quality of existing preschool development services, an integration of relevant policies and regulations, and an exploration of critical factors influencing child development outcomes.
Adding valuable insights from a different regional context, Dr. Tabor Gebremedhin (PhD), a guest of honor, shared Addis Ababa City's experience with its Early Childhood Development Program. Dr. Tabor emphasized the fundamental importance of early childhood and the necessity of early childhood care, drawing upon research findings to assert that investing in children is the most effective strategy for breaking the cycle of poverty.
The workshop also featured robust discussions on the study's proposed methodology and valuable lessons learned from Addis Ababa's early childhood education initiatives.
High-ranking regional officials from the Amhara Regional Council, the Office of the Woman and Child Affairs, the Amhara Health Office, and the Amhara Education Office actively participated in these discussions, expressing their strong commitment to supporting the study's implementation and fostering collaborative efforts throughout the process.
This initiative underscores Bahir Dar University's dedication to contributing to evidence-based policy and practice in critical areas such as early childhood development. The outcomes of this study are expected to provide valuable insights that will inform strategies and interventions aimed at improving the well-being and future prospects of children in the Amhara Region.
