Name one or more films that you surprisingly enjoyed, while it was a box office flop and generally wasn't received well by the film critics and audience at large.
For me, it would be Ghanchakkar (2013). It had a superb climax. The opening scene where Emran Hashmi and his partners-in-crime are performing a bank heist while wearing the different face expression masks of Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Utpal Dutt is hilarious. I also loved Zubeidaa (2001). Karisma Kapoor as the eponymous Zubeidaa, did a terrific job in that film.

A question for Katrina Kaif defenders
Why is it that whenever Katrina Kaif’s standing in Bollywood is questioned her supporters always jump out and say “well she’s got a very humble personality outside of films” I get paid to be good at my job not to be nice to people and I expect the same from actors I watch in films. Another defence they’ll use is “Katrina’s a superstar, there has to be a reason for it”. Or my favorite “She’s the best dancer in the industry”- Nora Fatehi could give her a run for her money in my opinion. The reason for her fame and following in the Indian audience is solely because of her ethnicity according to me.
She was the first white women (if you believe her to be no-part Indian as I do) to come onto the scene in Bollywood. Many copycats have come and gone including Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, and Amy Jackson but noone has lasted as long as Katrina Kaif because she was the only one accepted by Indian audiences. India’s always been fascinated with white women, we all remember how famous Lauren Gottlieb had gotten from her television dance stint. A Miley Cyrus background dancer thrown into the forefront of Indian televisions dance scene and tauted as the best female dancer in India. She has appeared in several music videos and starred in a dance movie all because of her ethnicity.
But back to Ms. Kaif - another reason she was so openly accepted by audiences was because of her alignment with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar for the better part of her career and being the “eye candy” in all their blockbuster movies gave her “Superstar” status. Without Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif would be a forgotten white women. Acting wise I would call her 100x worse than Salman Khan, atleast he can speak the language he is “acting” in.
Her refusal to learn the language she is acting in is such a disrespect to the audience. I mean if you’re watching a Katrina Kaif movie for her performance you aren’t really someone that thinks highly of what they’re watching. Living in a country for this long you would assume a person would have some kind of hold on the language. People saying that she would make a better career in Hollywood is a joke. One still needs to know how to act and she wouldn’t be able to emote in either language. Instead of having her entire focus on learning choreo for her songs, maybe she could focus more on the characters she is playing. If she was a good actress she wouldn’t need to go back and do a film with Salman Khan everytime her career starts to decline.
I’m not a hater without a purpose. I’m just a frustrated movie watcher who doesn’t understand the following of Katrina Kaif and the people that come out to defend her knowing she is talentless. Growing up I was a massive Katrina Kaif fan. She was my favorite “actress” if thats something you can call her. A grew up watching her and as I saw more good cinema my confusion for her popularity grew more intense. As I aged I realized I wasn’t a fan of her but a fan of her coupling with Akshay Kumar in the several movies that they did together and she had just become synonymous with the movies I used to love.
Just because she has been unlucky in their lovelife or is more humble than other actresses doesn’t mean she deserves the career that she has.

Singh are actors (not talking about their respective talents). Maybe nepotism can be good for something and by pushing an actress like Suhana Khan, directors may cast more female actors that look more like the audience that watches them.
Either cast male actors who are more attractive or cast female actors that look more attainable like their male counterparts do.
I’m honestly so happy for teen girls right now as they have someone like Rohit Saraf they can watch while I was a teen watching the almost 40 year old Khan’s in romantic roles when I was there age and actors like Ranbir Kapoor (who I thought was the most attractive guy in Bollywood at the time his career was taking off.. I’ve now understood this was also because he was a younger guy in an industry full of men my fathers age) and later on Aditya and Sidharth came onto the scene (sadly one is bad at choosing scripts and the other is a mediocre actor at best).
I know a lot of redditors will comment other actors they personally find attractive and I completely understand. I personally am a fan of Vicky Kaushal and find him super attractive but others may disagree. The point I’m trying to make right now is the lack of conventionally attractive actors for the female audience to watch as movies are always catered towards the male eye.

Which celebs in BW seem to have high IQ?
Based on their interviews, social media, background or IQ tests etc. which ones do you think have high IQ? Here are some of my guesses:
1. SRK (sword of honor in school, thinks, reads, speaks well)
2. SSR (rank holder, understands astrophysics)
3. A. R. Rehman (blends musical styles, hands-on with technology)
4. Preity Zinta (Master's in criminal psychology, also an entrepreneur)
5. Shreya Ghoshal (Dad's a nuclear engineer, also social media posts)

In Defense of 90s Movies
I saw Anjaam for the first time recently and thought of this sub. There’s so much negativity, at least among my generation, toward 90s BW. Off-key humor, bad acting, stalking, plots leading nowhere, are some of the reasons why the decade is out of fashion. But, the message behind SRK’s negative role in that ’94 thriller made me re-think the decade. Here are some of the reasons why I decided the 90s were not so bad:
First, stars looked like actual people. Sure, there was plastic surgery then (Sridevi) & makeup to lighten skin (Kajol). But, mostly, stars looked natural - brown skin, black hair, real noses, natural eyebrows. And, there was room for unconventional looks, like SRK. Hate on Govinda, sure, but let’s first admit that an average looking guy could become a male lead then. I’m not even sure Manisha’s Nepali looks would make it today, not without eye (& nose) surgery. Because now, here, this is the time of cookie-cutter nepos who filter, bleach, & pay surgeons to turn mediocrity into passable beauty. The next generation will judge us harshly for this, I think, as harshly as we judge the one that condoned stalking in DDLJ.
Second, the 90s had social justice cinema before it was fashionable. There’s a line in Bombay I can’t get over. The male lead, a Hindu, chastened by his Muslim wife, playfully asks her if should convert to Islam. Image that line, much less that story, in a single-screen theater film now. I cannot. Because, unlike today, BW, then, didn’t shy from inter-faith love, religious riots (Zakhm), or the northeast (Dil Se). And, there was still room for patriotism, with Border, and critiques of terrorism (Sarfarosh, Roja). Others took on disabilities long before Black or Barfi. Khamoshi may lack sensitivity toward the differently abled we expect today, but I’ll give it credit. It was one of the first (w/Koshish) movies to ever depict a deaf family.
Third, there were strong female characters. Confident women existed on screen before Queen or Delhi Crime. The feminism in Damini, Lajja, & Anjaam wasn’t the western corporate kind, though, it wasn’t about representation. Think Arth or Deewar, not Captain Marvel. That is, portrayals of ordinary women standing strong in the face of real problems. With those hard choices came open discussion about sex & women’s sexuality. Kya Kenha dealt with pre-marital sex for the first time. Women began wearing skirts & athletic wear without shame on screen. Rani’s short dresses in KKHH may not mean much to someone living in the west, or to the urban elite, but they’re still, to this day, off limits for many Indian women.
Fourth, 90s films encouraged men to be allies. That’s what I took from Anjaam: don’t be an entitled jerk who thinks women are property. SRK’s fate at Madhuri’s hands is about as strong a feminist message as anything I have seen. Darr & Sadak meanwhile took on toxic masculinity before the phrase existed. With SRK’s help, a new male lead arose, more vulnerable, but also resolute. And, that includes Raj. Would I prefer Raj didn’t chase Simran around like a maniac? Of course. Would I prefer Simran have more say over her fate? Fuck, yeah. But here’s the thing about DDLJ: it had a male lead that stood up to patriarchy and in defense of love. That might not look like much against the last 25 years of film. But think about the fifty before that: Raj was no Devdas. He didn’t whither in the face of authority. He took that ass kicking in the hope that we, now, might be able to choose our own partners. Kinda romantic.
There’s more. Diaspora films like Aa Ab Laut Chalen or Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham, however conservative in content, provided a place for the diaspora to communicate long before Indian Twitter or Reddit. They also made it possible for Indians to think of themselves on a world stage. Films like Raja Hindustani & Agneepath dealt with class in a way that elevated the rural poor rather than turned them villains, unlike NH-10 or Gangs of Wasseypur. But I will stop here. I, for

I DESPERATELY NEED TO SHIT ON LOVE AAJ KAL 2 AS A FIRST TIME WATCHER
I don't know what got into me, I'm bored during vacations and like a masochist I decided to watch LAK2 on Netflix. I'm 16:23 minutes into the movie, WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON? Is this a psychological thriller about a guy with mental health issues who becomes obsessed with an obnoxious girl? He beat up a guy randomly after seeing Zoe leave a bar with her date???? Is this a parody on the hookup culture showcased through the disillusionment of Karthik Aaryan's character? Why does he look like he's trying a PK caricature? WHY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD did he say "tu special hai" while on top a girl he JUST MET in a club???? Why do all "career-oriented" people in Bollywood movies work in hipster cafes? Why is typing furiously on the laptop the ONLY way Sara's character is shown to be serious about work? Are workplaces out of fashion???? Why is Imtiaz Ali (who fucking made Jab We Met, man I watched it last week, it's comedy and romance is still SO RELATABLE 10 years after release) so fucking out of touch with modern day romances and the urban middle-class youth? This is fucking intolerable. I keep getting flashbacks of the OG Love Aaj Kal, how natural the conversation between Deepika and Saif were. Maaaaaaaan, this is AWFUL.

Anyone else find Hasee Toh Phasee to be one of the best Rom-Coms of Bollywood in recent years?
Am I the only one that thinks that HTP is one of the most underrated romcom gems of bollywood in recent years? The movie did average buisness when it came out but it's a movie I've seen so many time because of how fun it is. I didnt have high expectations when I first saw it but I was pleasantly surprised. The acting of the supporting cast and Parineeti were highlights, and Sid seemed very comfortable in the role and I didnt find him bad at all, in fact his chemistry with Pari was cute imo.
The Soundtrack is another point I found very good and underrated when compared to other BWood soundtracks. Zehnaseeb, Ishq Bulava, Manchaala, are amazing tracks
The plot was simple but yet engaging. Funny without being overly cringy(some scenes did bother me ofc it's not a perfect movie by any means but hey,its a bollywood romcom, you arent going in expecting Nolan level of filmmaking)
Overall, I feel like I don't see this movie being talked about much, but when I do see it being talked about, people generally agree with me that it was a solid film.
What do you guys think? Do you guys agree or think that it was a bad/forgettable movie?

The Lack of Conventially Attractive Male Leads.
Remember the craze for Fawad Khan when the ‘Khoobsurat’ trailer had dropped.. the collective fawning from both female audiences and Bollywood actresses.. well there was a reason for it and that reason was the lack of conventionally attractive male actors in mainstream Bollywood films.
When I say conventionally attractive I mean Hrithik Roshan, Sidharth Malhotra, Aditya Roy Kapur, maybe Siddhant Chaturvedi (on a side note: doesn’t the male lead for Netflix’s Bridgerton look a lot like Siddhant!). Men that are tall with a six pack and sharp features and its sad that I can count them all of one hand.
Bollywood’s mainstream female leads are always beautiful and fit (lets not get into colorism right now) and unattainable looking while the male leads are always more relatable and built as someone the audience can sympathize with. As a female viewer all I ever see is women I could never relate to while the men look like any Indian guy walking around my city (perhaps not even as good).
In an industry controlled by men, full of sexism I shouldn’t be surprised by the lack of conventionally attractive male actors for the female audiences to fawn over as their is for men. But I’m still disappointed.
I also get shocked when I see individuals argue that someone like Aditya Roy Kapur is not attractive compared to a Salman Khan or a Shahrukh Khan and I 100% disagree with this. While some might find them attractive because of their personalities, charisma, and aura surrounding them (the less said about Salman the better), I am specifically talking about conventional looks, the face you would see in a Men’s Health Magazine for example. And some men just might not understand Aditya Roy Kapur’s attractiveness like Nick from the show ‘New Girl’ who just couldn’t understand why everyone around him was fawning over a conventionally attractive male model.
While Indian women have crazy beauty standards to look up to because of what they see in the media, men have it much easier. While men like Rajkumar Rao, and Vicky Kaushal (both of whom I adore) are becoming more mainstream with their unconventional looks its not the same for women and I wish it was. Seeing women who have surgically enhanced their faces and bleached their skin to look even more conventionally attractive for the male gaze is so sad to watch (plus surgical enhancement hinders their already subpar performances, one can’t emote if they can’t move their face). And men like Aditya Chopra, and Karan Johar are the ones forcing these standards onto women. Karan Johar for forcing Alia into having an eating disorder while the likes of Vaani Kapoor and Anushka Sharma have gotten enhancements on the behest of Aditya Chopra.
Another reason for the almost none existent amount of conventionally looking men also has to do with the fact that our male leads refuse to play characters of their age and its getting gross watching the likes of Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgan romancing girls my age while women like Kajol are playing mothers to younger actresses like Mithila Palkar. When the older generation of actors finally start acting their age, younger actors can finally come into the scene. The male audience wants male leads to look relatable and female leads to look like women they fantasize about in their heads. So if Bollywood isn’t going to make female leads more attainable why not set the same standards for men?
Nepotism is also one of the causes for this since every daughter of every past actor debut’s after spending lakhs on cosmetic surgeries, dermatologists, dieticians and everything else they can do to fit into the entertainment industries beauty standards and then we get male leads like Boney Kapoor’s son and the latest of the lot Sunny Deol’s son who neither look attractive nor can act.
When I see people question someone like Suhana Khan (assuming she may have acting chops) wanting to become an actress because of her looks I’m disgusted because noone questions why average lookers like Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer
What do you guys think, which movie is he talking about?
