President Biden Moves to Halt U.S. Exodus From World Health Organization
🇺🇸 President Biden is taking steps to reengage with the World Health Organization (WHO), reversing a decision the Trump administration made in July, several months into the coronavirus pandemic.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Biden signed an executive order Wednesday to stop the U.S.'s departure from the organization, fulfilling a promise he made during the campaign.
Formal withdrawal requires a year's notice, so former President Trump's decision would not have taken effect until July 6.

More and More U.S. Health Workers Refusing COVID-19 Vaccine
🇺🇸 Scores of health care workers are still declining to take the COVID-19 vaccine, presenting problems to the pandemic response by sending the wrong message to the public and risking staff shortages if workers become sick.
It’s all happening as a more contagious variant of the virus begins spreading in the U.S. CDC on Friday warned this strain could be the dominant one hitting the United States by March.
While there is no national data showing the number of health workers who have declined to be vaccinated, governors, public health officials and health care executives have sounded the alarm on what appears to be a higher than expected refusal rate.

Incoming CDC Director Expects 500,000 COVID-19 Deaths by Mid-February
🇺🇸 The incoming CDC director said Sunday that she expects the U.S. will reach 500,000 COVID-19 deaths by mid-February.🤔
Rochelle Walensky, President-elect Joe Biden’s named CDC director, told CBS News that she “unfortunately” agrees with outgoing CDC Director Robert Redfield that the pandemic is going to get worse.
She noted the U.S. has reached nearly 4,000 deaths a day.
“By the middle of February we expect half a million deaths in this country,” she said.
Walensky emphasized that those numbers do not account for the “tens of thousands” of people who recovered from COVID-19 but have an “uncharacterized syndrome.” She also said the U.S. has not yet seen “the ramifications of what happened from the holiday travel,” which the incoming director said will lead to “high rates of hospitalizations and deaths thereafter.”
“I think we still have some dark weeks ahead,” she said.

Dutch Government Proposes First Curfew Since World War Two, Flight Bans
🇳🇱 The Dutch government on Wednesday proposed the first nationwide curfew since World War Two and a ban on flights from South Africa and Britain in its toughest moves yet to limit the spread of new coronavirus mutations in the Netherlands.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the curfew must be approved by parliament, which is set to debate measures against the coronavirus on Thursday.
The flight ban, which Rutte said also will apply to all South American countries, will begin on Saturday. The curfew was expected to take effect this weekend, he said.
“This is a very tough measure, but we are at a crossroads,” Rutte said in a televised news conference. “The British variant doesn’t leave us with an alternative.”

🇺🇸 Cannabis activists in Washington, D.C. are planning to offer a free bag of marijuana to those receiving the vaccine for COVID-19, the group DC Marijuana Justice announced this week. The free cannabis giveaway, dubbed Joints for Jabs, is being arranged to coincide with vaccine clinics expected to open in the nation’s capital soon, DCMJ wrote in a press release on Monday.
With Joints for Jabs, the DCMJ activists hope to highlight the need for further cannabis policy reform at the national and local level while bringing awareness to the importance of equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. Once local health officials begin offering vaccines to the general public, dozens of home cannabis cultivators will celebrate the occasion by handing out free bags of marijuana outside vaccination centers.
Locations and times of the Joints for Jabs giveaways will be announced after DCMJ has more information about local vaccination sites.
“We are looking for ways to safely celebrate the end of the pandemic and we know nothing brings people together like cannabis,” said Nikolas Schiller, the group’s co-founder.

Portugal's Health System on Brink of Collapse as COVID-19 Cases Surge
🇵🇹 Portugal’s public health system is on the verge of collapsing as hospitals in the areas worst-affected by a worrying surge in coronavirus cases are quickly running out of intensive care beds to treat COVID-19 patients.
“Our health system is under a situation of extreme pressure,” Health Minister Marta Temido told reporters on Sunday afternoon after a visit to a struggling hospital. “There is a limit and we are very close to it.”
The health system, which prior to the pandemic had the lowest number of critical care beds per 100,000 inhabitants in Europe, can accommodate a maximum of 672 COVID-19 patients in intensive care units, or ICUs, according to health ministry data.
The number of people in ICUs with COVID-19 reached 647 on Sunday, according to health authority DGS.

Spain Reports 38,869 New Coronavirus Cases in a Day, a Record High
🇪🇸The number of new coronavirus infections reported on Wednesday by the central Health Ministry, 38,869 in 24 hours, is by far the worst seen so far in the pandemic. The previous record was 25,595, on October 30.
The figure was 53% up on the previous day, and is triple the highest figure seen during the first wave last year—although it should be noted that tests were only being carried out on the most serious cases at that time, and around two-thirds of infections are thought to have gone undiagnosed at that time.
But even bearing this in mind, the nearly 39,000 cases reported yesterday would still be at the maximum levels seen, and the real figure is likely even higher taking into account the fact that even now not all infections are detected by tests and that many asymptomatic cases do not seek medical treatment at all.
