Gotta hand FDev a major W on storytelling/drama this time.
Yesterday I tried AX combat for the first time at Alpha Centauri.
One panic attack and a rebuy later I realized I hadn't equipped a Caustic Sink for my no-Guardian no-engineering Phyton MkII.
So I went to Inara to find the Caustic Sink, it pointed me to Rescue Ship Cavell. Cool, it's on the same system I was. Jumped there and BAM!
Before me: just millions of metal chunks and a yellow cloud.
"Where is the Rescue Ship? They got it?" I literally felt goosebumps. I hadn't read the last Galnet News yet.
I had to share this because there have been so few times that a game has made me feel this way, I can count them on one hand and still have fingers to spare.
Major cool factor.

Jumped to Sol, got hyperdicted, joined 0% club, then manual landing with 1:30 oxygen left amidst AX combat. How I love this game!

I've been playing and exploring Elite for many many years but this is the first time I found an undiscovered Super Giant while out in the black. Even better is that there is a near 1 Solar Mass star right next to it for perfect scale to show the sheer size of the Super. 312 Solar Radii, what a sight.

I believe that the Martian relic is of Guardian origin.
In Mars's orbit, there is a tourist beacon saying that in 2280, an artifact was found buried in the Martian soil. The only publicly known property of this artifact is that it is smaller than the palm of a child's hand, therefore, measuring a few centimeters. We know that this artifact is of alien origin. The only alien species that we know of in the galaxy are the Guardians and the Thargoids. The known Thargoid artifacts do not match the size of the Martian relic. Furthermore, the solar system, especially Mars, does not have anything that we know would be attractive to the Thargoids, as they generally seek systems with ammonia worlds or that are rich in ammonia in some way. Mars does not match this information, even pre-terraformed Mars. But Mars does match the type of planet that the Guardians liked. According to the Codex, the Guardians liked planets with low gravity and this is confirmed both by Ram Tah's decoding of the libraries and the planets on which we found Guardian sites, which are either rocky/metal-rich worlds with low gravity. But more than pointing out which alien species this relic is from, I believe that this relic is probably a neural implant that the Guardians used to connect to their network. If this is true, the Feds (the power that confiscated the relic) know a lot more about the Guardians than we imagine and may even be using this technology for other purposes. Anyway, that's my hypothesis. What do you think?

Powerplay 2.0 - what am I missing?
I've been playing Elite for years, on and off, but I've never bothered with Powerplay. Now Powerplay 2.0 is out I thought I'd give it a go because I might be missing something great.
I enlisted with Edmund Mahon because of where my home station was and I've been playing fairly consistently since Powerplay 2.0 started. The conclusion I've come to is that Powerplay is just another tedious gameplay mechanic wherein I have to repeatedly carry out boring and repetitive tasks in order to gain tiny increments towards a goal that I don't really care about. I've just taken about 15 minutes to go and get commodities to trade at 40%+ profit and made about 12 merits. When I've done that for about a fortnight I'll gain a rank where I can rebuy for 5% cheaper or something, but only if I get killed in an Edmund Mahon system. Marvellous.
I can't believe I'm right about this. I must be missing something. What is it? I know I can get weapons and stuff later on, but it's going to take me so long to earn enough merits that I'll have long given up by then.

Posts Discussing Being "Ganked" or Asking About "Ganker Motivation" Are Now Banned
This includes:
- "I was Ganked by Person"
- "Ganking sucks, here's why"
- "Ganking is Great, here's why"
- "Why was I Ganked?"
- "People who Gank are adjective"
- "My Friend was Ganked, does this mean FDEV will release Ship Interiors?"
etc.
Reasoning:
These posts are generally responded to as unintended (or sometimes intended) rage-bait. They are locked almost every time due to the massive amount of trolling comments that will come in and defend ganking or tell OP to "git gud," and the discussion about the morality of these actions have been written about from Beagle Point and back.
These posts will be removed under Rule 1: Quality.
However, we would like to add a helpful removal reason to include with the removal of these posts. Please comment below with links that can be given as part of the removal reason to aid the player (such as a Mobius FAQ, Defensive / Evasive ship building videos from a reputable source, etc).

To all AX combat pilots: ignore Sol, repel invasions in neighboring systems, this must be done by next Thursday!
It's hard to admit, but Sol is temporary lost, and there's nothing we can do as long as Titan controls the systems around it. That's the mechanics of the Thargoid war, Titan is only vulnerable if it loses the systems it controls.
Focus your rage on the systems that are currently being invaded, as if not repelled they will be lost by next Thursday.
(if you doing evacuation missions from Sol - ignore this message and please continue)
Use this table to find a place to put your efforts and find other AX pilots.

Eight years into the game, I've just found a new, dumb way of dying.
Into the black, exploring, some 5k ly away from the bubble.
Gravity is low. Drivings are long. Boosting over hills. Ship is nearer and nearer. I have the dumbrilliant idea of landing my scarab on my conda. Succeeded. Sort off: upside down.
Not a problem, just use the boost. Boost is unavailable close to the ship. Can't disembark as well. But I can dismiss the ship! Another brilliant idea.
Ship powers up and starts to move. Damage sounds. Scarab destroyed, along with some research and exploration data.
Brilliant.

FDev, can we please get Stronghold Carrier skins for FCs? Or maybe just buy these as alternatives?

The issue isn’t merit rates, it’s with how the player approaches the game
When all a player cares is about numbers then everything will always feel like a grind, and feel forced to only do the most optimal activity, regardless of merit rates. No amount of reasonable merit rate increases can change that.
Do what you enjoy doing, let the numbers be on the back burner. You’ll rank up a bit slower but you’ll ENJOY the time you spend doing stuff so it will overall feel faster.
This goes for practically everything in elite. They could quarter the grind of everything and it wouldn’t change what happens when you hard focus the numbers. I’ve managed rank 24 doing nothing but stuff i enjoy, a mix of combat and S&R.
The intention is to be able to play and make progress over a LONG period of time while just doing the things you enjoy. Not get everything in a month (which you can very easily still do if you truly wanted to, overall in a shorter time period than PP 1.0 and it's permanent...).
I know most people will likely disagree, and that is fine. All I ask is try to forget about the numbers, do the activities you enjoy doing and enjoy playing the game, not stare at a number and getting frustrated it's not immediately maxed out.
(And if your preferred activity doesn't earn merits and it seems like it should, make a suggestion on the forums. Personally I wish more missions gave merits, or if we could have PP-specific mission boards at stronghold carriers instead of the weeklies.)
