Bayer 04 Leverkusen v VfB Stuttgart - DFL Supercup 2024 Photo by Rene Nijhuis/MB Media/Getty Images I guess they don’t like him THAT much then... It seemed impossible to stop Frans Krätzig last year. After an incredible pre-season with Bayern Munich and a brilliant goal against Liverpool FC, the youth player became a member of the senior team and impressed. It seemed his hot start had died after his minutes started declining as the season wore on, but he then moved to Austria Vienna on loan in January and impressed again. Riding on a wave of confidence and form, he moved to Vizemeister VFB Stuttgart in the summer and set up a goal within a minute of his debut against Bayer Leverkusen. And then the hot streak finally died out. Krätzig has struggled to beat out Germany’s starting left back Maximilian Mittelstädt in the left back role and even failed to make head coach Sebastian Hoeness’ matchday squad in the two Bundesliga games before the October international break. Does that make this move a bust or can it still work out? @iMiaSanMia_GER captured a report that says the latter may be the case:VfB Stuttgart is very happy with Frans Krätzig so far. As a backup to Maximilian Mittelstädt, however, he only gets a few appearances. The purchase option for him is under €10 million, the club says it is more likely to be ~€5 million The point of adding the buy option, from a Bayern point of view, is to give clubs an incentive to develop these players. The people at Bayern will keeping an eye on the youngster and hope that the club’s happiness with Krätzig results in some actual playing time, as well.Looking to get ready for Bayern Munich’s big Bundesliga showdown with VfB Stuttgart? Eintracht Frankfurt v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images Bayern Munich vs. VfB Stuttgart should be a battle... Bayern Munich is back in action on Saturday when VfB Stuttgart will visit the Allianz Arena. For Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany, the match represents a chance to improve upon how things have looked of late. ”We’re playing against Stuttgart tomorrow. Obviously we’ve analyzed the last few games. The important thing is always the question of how often we’d win if we played the game 10 times. We want to improve details. We 100 percent believe that we can have success this way. That’s why we’re looking forward to the next game,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Stuttgart have shown what they’re capable of. When you look at their games, they always want to play their way. They always apply a lot of pressure and want to play their way through. They’re a good team. Hopefully, it’ll be a good game. They’ve done very good work in recent years. Their players have grown. It’s good for us that we get to play against teams like them”Many have criticized Kompany’s tactics in recent weeks, but if you are expecting Kompany to change the high defensive line that he has become known for, you might be disappointed. “I’ve already answered the question. We’re usually very pragmatic in Belgium, a bit like the Germans. It’s not about belief, but about analysis. We had a lot more chances than our opponents. Of course we have to optimise that. If you stay objective, it would be stupid to change everything just because the result didn’t work out. We believe that we’ll win a lot of games in the future in this way,” said Kompany. As for who is in and who is out, fans will not see Jamal Musiala, who is still being held out due to a hip injury, but could see more of Leroy Sané, who has been brought along slowly this season after having surgery this summer. “Everyone’s come back from the international break fit. Unfortunately, not everyone is 100 percent ready to play. Jamal Musiala won’t be involved. We need to wait and see with Dayot Upamecano. We’ll hopefully have the whole squad back together in the coming weeks,” said Kompany (as captured by @FCBayernEN). “I can imagine that we will see a top Leroy Sané in the coming weeks. His minutes will come. He will show how good he is. There’s no time pressure.”Looking to get ready for Bayern Munich’s big Bundesliga showdown with VfB Stuttgart? FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Two weeks off wasn’t enough to get Musiala back on track. The international break is OVER! Bayern Munich somehow survived the break without suffering any new injuries, which is more than you can say for their opponents this weekend. After three winless games in a row and two whole weeks to think about them, Vincent Kompany faces a second gauntlet of major fixtures that will really test his mettle as coach. First up, Sebastian Hoeneß’s VfB Stuttgart. Team newsIn his pregame presser, Vincent Kompany confirmed that Jamal Musiala will miss the game. No exact reason was given, but it’s probably the same hip issue that sidelined him before the break and kept him from being called up to the national team. The fact that two weeks of rest and recuperation wasn’t enough to fix the problem is definitely worrisome — hopefully the coaching staff is being simply being conservative with his comeback. Dayot Upamecano also remains doubtful for the game, while Josip Stanišić and Sacha Boey work on their comebacks. Therefore, when it comes to the lineup, Kompany doesn’t have too many options. Harry Kane mercifully survived his international outing with the Three Lions, so he should be able to start up top. Joining him will likely be Thomas Müller, assuming that Kompany doesn’t prefer Michael Olise in that role like he did against Aston Villa. With Serge Gnabry, those four players should round out the offensive end of the lineup. In midfield, Aleksandar Pavlović is reportedly fit, which should allow him to pair up with Joshua Kimmich in the center of the pitch. Calls for João Palhinha to start have grown louder following the last-minute draw against Frankfurt on MD6, but the coach has given no indication that he wants to change his pivot. At the back, assuming Dayot Upamecano is fit, we should see him and Kim Min-jae start together in the center — alternatives to Upamecano include Eric Dier or Leon Goretzka. As for the left and right-back spots, you have to assume Alphonso Davies and Raphaël Guerreiro will reprise their roles from before the break. With Manuel Neuer in goal, here’s what a potential lineup could look like: Media Looking for a more in-depth preview of the game? Then check out our preview podcast! Real Madrid CF v Atalanta BC - UEFA Super Cup 2024 Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images This would be a tragic end to his career. When David Alaba left Bayern Munich for Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, he never could have imagined what awaited him at the Spanish capital. In his very first season at Los Blancos, the Austrian won the Champions League, which included now-iconic photos of him celebrating with a chair. Since then, however, Alaba’s Madrid dream has become a bit of a nightmare. The Austrian suffered an ACL injury at the beginning of December last year. Back then, Bayern Munich actually helped Alaba secure treatment from a world-renowned specialist in cruciate ligament injuries. However, according to Spanish publication Onda Cero, the Austrian’s injury appears to be much worse than initially thought. Alaba experiences extreme pain after training sessions due to reduced cartilage in his knee, which makes bones rub against each other. His return date has already been pushed back to January 2025, which would mean he would miss the first half of this season. Real Madrid are apparently concerned that Alaba may not be able to return to football at all. If true, this would mean a tragic end to the player’s career. Alaba played at Bayern Munich ever since he was a teenager, rising through the ranks and helping the club win the treble twice. No one wants to see him retire before his time because of an injury.

PSV v Sparta Rotterdam - Eredivisie Photo by Raymond Smit/BSR Agency/Getty Images But are the youngster’s chances at Bayern well and truly over? Malik Tillman’s nine years at Bayern Munich ended in the summer of 2024, as his loan to Eredivise side PSV Eindhoven was made permanent. Part of the initial loan agreement contained not only a buy option for PSV but also the option for Bayern to nullify the buy option in exchange for a certain fee, as long as the Bavarians notified the Dutch champions within a certain date. What the required fee was or when the notice had to be handed over was subject to contrasting reports, but Bayern clearly decided against bringing Tillman back under the previously agreed circumstances. It is relevant to note that Bayern Munich’s sporting team had changed in the year that Tillman was on loan at PSV, which might explain the club cooling on their former player.“The whole thing was up to Bayern, and they basically didn’t want me anymore,” Tillman confirmed recently, as captured by prosoccerwire. “PSV had the right to buy me. They were the first option, and so I didn’t really have a chance to say anything.”Tillman reached the knockout stages of the Champions League last season and is fast rising as a prospect, so things are looking good.“I’m still happy at PSV. I also wanted to stay at PSV, so it’s a good thing,” the 22-year-old added. One just needs to look at the attacking depth Bayern currently possesses to realize why it may have been detrimental to both Bayern and Tillman to keep the former Greuther Fürth youth player around any longer. Nor does that mean his story in Munich is over. There were prominent reports of a buy back clause as well as a matching right for Tillman, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. Perhaps he will go on to complete a decade at Bayern after all...

SOCCER: OCT 17 Mexico vs Germany Photo by Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Who says the international break brings no drama? Ah, the international break. The few periods of time every year in which Bayern Munich is not the most controversial footballing organization in Germany and the German national team assumes the title of FC Hollywood for a brief period of time. In this week’s drama, Fulham keeper Bernd Leno refused a call up to the German national team and gave a rather blunt statement as to why. Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann was also rather terse when asked about Leno’s refusal.“He made demands that I couldn’t fulfill. I showed him an interesting perspective, but he wasn’t so happy with that,” Nagelsmann explained, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Everyone has to decide for themselves.”But how does Leno’s decision reflect on his national team hopes? Probably not too well.“I’m not closing the door, but that hasn’t opened it very wide either,” Nagelsmann said.At 32, one has to start wondering how many more years Leno will be considered for a call up to Nagelsmann’s side. With Alexander Nübel and Oliver Baumann now taking their own significant steps towards solidifying their spots in the national team, and the injured FC Barcelona man Marc-André ter Stegen the presumptive No. 1 before that, one must now wonder if Leon will ever have any kind of future with the German national team.Looking for more thoughts and analysis from Germany’s 1-0 victory over the Netherlands? VfB Stuttgart v TSG 1899 Hoffenheim - Bundesliga Photo by Christian Kaspar-Bartke/Getty Images Ah, Manchester United. Never change... Sebastian Hoeness, head coach of VFB Stuttgart and one of the masterminds behind their incredible leap from 16th in the Bundesliga to 2nd within a year, has a list of several top clubs that admire his coaching talents. According to Christian Falk, Manchester United joined that list in the summer:During the summer break, Manchester United contacted Sebastian Hoeneß (42), manager of VfB Stuttgart. Even before they extended the contract of head coach Erik ten Hag (54), the United bosses wanted to know whether Hoeneß would be available for the job as United’s manager and inquired about possible transfer modalities. Hoeneß, however, declined.Another of those top clubs keeping an eye on Hoeness is, of course, Bayern Munich. But they were rebuffed before the 2023/24 season was even over as Sebastian Hoeness extended his contract back in March of 2024, as a clear sign that Uli Hoeness’ nephew would stay at Die Schwäben for at least another season. Somehow, it took until the summer for Manchester United to realize this. But what happens if the Red Devils come knocking again next year? VfB Stuttgart v TSG 1899 Hoffenheim - Bundesliga Photo by Christian Kaspar-Bartke/Getty Images Catch our full coverage of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga clash against VfB Stuttgart right here! After three games winless and two weeks to think about it, Vincent Kompany will be anxious to get Bayern Munich back on the pitch. Following a relatively uneventful international break (in terms of injuries) the Bavarians host Sebastian Hoeneß’s VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena. Kompany is under fire for his team’s lack of defensive solidity. The 3-3 draw to Eintracht Frankfurt in the last minute was a gut punch that has yet to heal. Given that Stuttgart are a high-octane attacking focused team, it’ll be a good chance for the coach to test whether his defense is capable of actually handling a decent offense, or whether it’ll be back to the drawing board before the FC Barcelona game. Join us here on Bavarian Football Works for the full story. We have news, updates, podcasts, analysis, and a lot more besides — for this game and so many others! Real Madrid v FC Bayern München: Semi-final Second Leg - UEFA Champions League 2023/24 Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images This says more about Lewandowski than it does about Kane. Here’s some food for thought. Harry Kane has not scored in his last 350 minutes for club and country, the longest he’s gone without a goal since joining Bayern Munich last summer. Per a statistic compiled by Bild (shared via @iMiaSanMia) the Englishman has already surpassed Robert Lewandowski’s longest ever goal drought at the club. Honestly, that says more about Lewandowski than anything else. Kane’s numbers still look good compared to the likes of Claudio Pizzaro, Giovane Élber, and even Gerd Müller — all of whom went significant periods without a goal during their Bayern Munich careers. Harry Kane is currently on a 350-minute goalless run for club and country. Here's the longest some of Bayern's 'top strikers' in the past have gone without a goal [ @BILD] pic.twitter.com/6zeNDb1FWT— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) October 15, 2024Of course, football is a little bit different today, and the pressure on Kane is immense. Given his age, the fee that Bayern Munich paid to acquire him from Spurs, and the simple fact that the club has no other recognized striker, the onus is on Kane to score as many goals as possible, as often as possible. It’s no coincidence that his current goal “drought” coincides with a three game winless run at Bayern — Vincent Kompany needs his striker scoring again. Of course, there’s also the matter of his fitness. Kane sat out the game between the Three Lions and Greece so he could start vs. Finland. The player has been nursing a knock since the Leverkusen game, which could play into how he performs against Stuttgart this weekend. Then it’s off to Spain to face off against FC Barcelona and Robert Lewandowski — a true striker-vs.-striker duel. Ironically, Lewandowski may be facing fitness issues of his own. Imagine if the two FCBs meet without their main strikers able to play to their fullest.

FC Bayern München Training Session And Press Conference - UEFA Champions League 2023/24 Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Tuchel takes over for Gareth Southgate. After weeks of speculation it’s finally official — Thomas Tuchel is the new coach of the England national football team, taking over for Gareth Southgate. The former Bayern Munich boss will be joined by his assistant Anthony Barry, who he originally brought to Munich from Chelsea FC as a set piece specialist. The English FA made the announcement official via their Twitter account (still not calling it X):We’re delighted to announce that UEFA Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel is the new England senior men’s head coach and will be assisted by internationally renowned English coach Anthony Barry.— The FA (@FA) October 16, 2024We’re delighted to announce that UEFA Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel is the new England senior men’s head coach and will be assisted by internationally renowned English coach Anthony Barry.Tuchel will now be tasked with guiding the Three Lions to an elusive trophy. Nabbing the English top job also reunites him with former players like Harry Kane and Eric Dier (provided the latter gets called up). Can Thomas Tuchel be the man to finally break the English trophy drought in football? If he does, then given his accomplishments with Chelsea FC, he may find himself becoming one of the most respected (and despised) coaches in modern football.
