Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has come out in full support of a second referendum on independence for Scotland. Corbyn emphasised that he ‘hopes that it will happen soon’, according to GB News.
This recent statement by the godfather of the contemporary British left is eerily familiar with his backing of a second referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union. Such a move proved to be fatal to Labour’s chances of winning the general election of 2019.
It seems that even though Corbyn is operating outside the Labour Party – and that he may even stand against Labour in a 2024 general election at his constituency, Islington North – Corbyn is still heavily manipulated by the Labour Party elite. Corbyn’s attempts to kowtow to the Labour left on subjects such as Brexit and bogus antisemitism charges have resulted in nothing short of political suicide.
In spite of all this, we in the Workers Party hope that Jeremy Corbyn will stand and believe that he has a good chance of winning against a Labour candidate. If Corbyn were to win as an independent in the heart of London that would be yet another high-profile blow to Labour.
However, we do not support the tactic of ‘neverendums’ (non-stop referendums until the populace arrives at the ‘correct’ answer) as an antidemocratic way for the political elite to impose its will on the country. We believe that the breakup of our island nation will hinder the class struggle.
