The Trotskyist Socialist Appeal group have said of yesterday's TUC motion “This is an inter-imperialist war between the reactionary capitalist regime of Putin in Russia, which has imperialist ambitions, and US imperialism and its allies in NATO, which want to degrade Russia to a point where it is unable to challenge their interests.
The war is being fought in Ukraine, and it is Ukrainian (and Russian) working people who are dying. But at bottom it is caused by the conflicting and equally reactionary interests of Moscow and Washington.”
The old Trot line. They just don't stop hating Russia but the analysis has no relevance to the here and now. That here and now demands that Russia’s security concerns regarding NATO should be the primary consideration for anyone not wishing to see this conflict escalate to the point that directly involves a European war or at worst a nuclear one.
It wasn’t Russia that expanded to the borders of NATO but NATO that expanded to the borders of Russia. It’s nothing to do with Russian capitalism or supposed imperialism, but everything to do with US hegemony and whether one prefers a U.S. dominated unipolar world or a multipolar one.

The union leaders present squirmed when taxed with being over how comfortable they were in the company of neocons, merchants of death, Tory grandees and blowhard generals. They had no answer to how the interests of their members were served by pointless backfiring sanctions on Russia. John McDonnell slid off before he could be reminded that it was a Labour government in power in 2008 when Ukraine began its long march of folly by tabling a request to join NATO when a true friend of Ukraine would have advised them not to invite trouble.

£500 million for British industry is pathetic.
In 2022 we gave £2.3 BILLION to Ukraine and committed the same again in 2023.
Let this be a lesson to all those in the trade union movement so committed to the cause of Ukraine and British imperialism foreign policy interests.

Andy spoke about the ongoing State attacks on labour rights, and the sterile response at the TUC Congress where the debate is sanitised and opposition controlled.
Andy explained that the important decisions in the movement are taken at the highest levels, not the rank and file, and if we wanted to influence those decisions we need to bring comrades on at those levels.
