In 1986, British police used DNA profiling for the first time in a criminal investigation to help solve two murders.

Geneticist Alec Jeffreys developed the technique, which compares patterns in DNA to help distinguish individuals.

In the case, DNA evidence cleared an initial suspect and later helped identify Colin Pitchfork, who was convicted of the murders of two teenage girls:
Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth, in Leicestershire, England.

In the traditional courtship customs of the Wodaabe people of Niger and neighboring parts of the Sahel,
men take part in a festival called Gerewol, where elaborate appearance and dance play a role in attracting partners.

Men apply facial makeup, emphasize their eyes and teeth, and perform synchronized dances while women observe.

The festival is associated with courtship and social gatherings, although its meaning and practices vary across communities.

The striking makeup and expressive facial displays make Gerewol one of the more distinctive courtship traditions documented in West Africa. 🎭🌍

In 1859, the United States and Britain nearly went to war over a pig.

On June 15, an American farmer named Lyman Cutlar shot a pig belonging to the British-owned Hudson’s Bay Company after finding it eating potatoes on his land in the San Juan Islands.

The dispute escalated when British authorities threatened to arrest him, prompting American troops to arrive.

Both sides eventually sent military forces to the islands, but no soldiers were killed.

The only reported death in the original dispute was the pig.

The islands were finally awarded to the United States in 1872 through arbitration by German Emperor Wilhelm I.

Why can a relationship feel more exciting when it is forbidden?

Psychologists sometimes explain this through reactance theory:
When people feel their freedom to choose is restricted, they may desire the restricted option more strongly.

A relationship opposed by family, society, or authority can therefore feel more appealing precisely because it is off-limits.

Scarcity and secrecy may also intensify attraction by making the relationship seem rarer or more emotionally charged.

However, forbidden relationships do not automatically produce stronger or more lasting love. 🖤🔒

Partible paternity is the belief that a child can have multiple biological fathers, accepted in some South American cultures like the Bari and Tapirape.

Multiple men who have sexual relations with the mother during pregnancy share paternal responsibility.

This practice is linked to increased child survival rates due to shared resources.

It contrasts with the Western model of a single biological paternity.

2-nonenal is the compound that makes people smell different from age 40 and up.
It's not because of food or personal hygiene.

One theory is that the smell is an indication if someone is a suitable partner or not.

The only thing you can do against it is gently wash yourself daily and get fresh clothes and bedding regularly.

2-Nonenal is an unsaturated aldehyde. The colorless liquid is an important aroma component of aged beer and buckwheat, and is insoluble in water.

Australia’s first cops were (former) criminals themselves. In 1789, Governor Arthur Phillip formed the Night Watch, a civilian police force made up of 12 of the most well-behaved convicts. Despite their past, these men were entrusted with keeping law and order in Sydney Town, New South Wales. This unusual beginning laid the groundwork for Australia’s formal police system.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii.

People can become infected by eating undercooked meat containing the parasite or by accidentally swallowing the parasite from contaminated food, water, soil, or surfaces.

Cats are part of the parasite’s life cycle, but not all cats have it.

An infected cat can shed the parasite in its feces, which can contaminate the environment.

Simply owning or touching a cat does not cause toxoplasmosis.

Most healthy people have no symptoms, but infection can be serious during pregnancy or with weakened immunity.

In 1054, Christianity experienced a major split between the Church of Rome in the west and the Church of Constantinople in the east.

This event became known as the Great Schism.

The division developed over centuries of disagreements involving papal authority, theological differences, and church practices.

It formalized the separation between what became the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, two major branches of Christianity that continue to exist today.

Have you ever felt your phone vibrate in your pocket, only to check it and find no notification?

This is known as phantom vibration syndrome. It describes the experience of mistakenly sensing that a phone is vibrating when it hasn't. Researchers have linked the phenomenon to how people become accustomed to checking their devices and interpreting ordinary bodily sensations as alerts.

It has been reported among frequent mobile phone users, including students and healthcare workers. 📱

Eating carrots can improve your night vision — but only to a point.

Carrots contain beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A.

This vitamin is essential for producing rhodopsin, a light-sensitive pigment in the retina that helps the eyes function in low-light conditions.

However, eating extra carrots won't give someone with sufficient vitamin A unusually sharp night vision.

The popular belief was also amplified during World War II, when British authorities promoted stories about pilots' exceptional night vision to conceal the use of radar. 🥕👁

Have you ever felt embarrassed about something and assumed everyone noticed?

Psychologists call this the spotlight effect — our tendency to overestimate how much other people notice our appearance, mistakes, or behaviour.

In a 2000 experiment, researchers asked students to wear an embarrassing Barry Manilow T-shirt into a room of other students.

Those wearing the shirt estimated that far more people would notice it than actually did.

Most people are too occupied with their own thoughts to pay as much attention to us as we imagine.

Today (in North America) is Indigenous Peoples’ Day,
In honors to the diversity, history and different cultures of the Indigenous peoples of the United States, including Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities.

The holiday was already suggested in the 1970s as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day, which remembers Christopher Columbus’s landing in the Caribbean on October 12, 1492, and the beginning of Western colonialism in the Americas.

Since that time, a number of states have begun to observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and in 2021 U.S. president Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to officially recognize the holiday.
