More than 8,000 metres beneath the ocean’s surface, a remarkable fish lives in the darkness of the Mariana Trench.

Known as the Mariana snailfish, it has been recorded at depths where the pressure is more than 800 times greater than at sea level.

With no sunlight, near-freezing temperatures, and crushing pressure, this tiny fish is specially adapted to survive in one of the most extreme environments on Earth. 🐟

A lightning bolt can heat the air around it to about 30,000°C, making the air suddenly expand. This rapid expansion creates a shock wave that travels through the atmosphere as thunder. The temperature inside a lightning channel can be five times hotter than the surface of the Sun.

Some people experience sexual attraction toward fictional characters, a phenomenon sometimes called fictosexuality. Psychologists suggest that imagination, emotional attachment, anthropomorphism, and exposure to a character's personality or appearance can all contribute to this attraction. Experiencing such attraction does not necessarily mean someone believes the character is real; it can exist entirely within fantasy and imagination.

Oranges are not always naturally orange. In some places, they stay green even when ripe because of the weather. To make them look orange, farmers use either a safe red dye called Citrus Red No. 2 or treat the fruit with ethylene gas, which helps the skin change color faster.

A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus.

Venus takes about 243 Earth days to rotate once on its axis, but only about 225 Earth days to complete one orbit around the Sun.

Even stranger, Venus rotates in the opposite direction to most planets. If you stood on Venus, the Sun would appear to rise in the west and set in the east.

It’s one of the strangest planetary rotations in our solar system. 🪐

A copy of Charles I’s 1649 death warrant is displayed in the Robing Room at the Palace of Westminster. Charles I had ruled without Parliament for 11 years before the English Civil War. He later fought Parliament’s forces and was tried for high treason. He was found guilty and beheaded on 30 January 1649. Some interpret the warrant’s display as a reminder of the limits of royal power, although this is not officially stated as its purpose.

Ancient Slavic households once observed a ritual known as Dziady, a ceremony honoring the spirits of deceased ancestors. Families left food, bread, honey, and drinks at graves or inside their homes, believing the spirits returned on certain nights to visit the living. People would wear Karaboshka masks, made of wood or clay, come night to imitate the dead. Elements of these pre-Christian Slavic pagan traditions still survive in parts of Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine today.
