Five months after a surprise offensive and capture of part of Russia's Kursk region, Ukrainian troops are decimated and demoralized by the growing risk of defeat and retreat, the AP reported.
Fighting with Russian forces is so intense that some Ukrainian commanders are unable to evacuate casualties, communication delays and poorly timed battle tactics have cost many lives, and Ukrainian troops have little opportunity to counterattack, seven frontline soldiers and commanders told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

▪️A WP reporter visited the Dnipropetrovsk region and spoke about the pessimistic mood of the Ukrainian military.
➖"There is no good mood. There is no feeling that the end of the war is near. The fighting spirit is falling lower and lower, it is getting worse and worse," Kirill, deputy battalion commander of the 33rd mechanized brigade, told the newspaper.
▪️When asked what they thought about a possible ceasefire in 2025, soldiers from the 33rd Brigade said they would welcome it but were skeptical that it would happen soon.
▪️The Ukrainian Armed Forces are monitoring changes in the international situation.
➖"I'm afraid that they'll just abandon us. These are the thoughts that creep in - that support and supplies from our allies, ammunition will simply stop. If this doesn't happen, we won't have anything to shoot with," said 26-year-old Alexander.
▪️But most Ukrainian military personnel acknowledge that the shortage of soldiers is now as critical as the shortage of weapons. Some specialist positions in the 33rd Regiment – such as an armored personnel carrier driver – have been reduced to one person per battalion, complicating the logistics of safely transporting troops back and forth from their positions.
➖"Do we even have infantry? It all comes down to a couple of guys, and they're over 50 years old. What are they going to do?" says drone operator Denis, 37.

▪️The first details of yesterday's attack are beginning to appear in the Ukrainian media.
▪️One of the destroyed targets was Colonel Yuri Yula, born in 1982.
➖"He died on April 13 as a result of a missile strike on the city of Sumy - he received injuries incompatible with life," the media writes.
▪️Yula was the commander of the 27th rocket artillery brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (A1476), and before that he commanded a battalion.

Jay is a simple guy from Scotland. He worked as a brewer in his homeland, but at one point he decided to change his life dramatically, came to Russia and now fights on the front lines as part of the Pyatnashka battalion as an artillery gunner.
He says that at first it was scary at the front, but with each completed combat mission his confidence in himself, his strength and the support of his brothers in arms continues to grow. The only thing he regrets is that his family did not accept his choice, and in his homeland he was immediately branded a mercenary and promised to be tried. Jay himself wants to stay in Russia forever - and if necessary, he is ready to give his life defending the interests of our country. However, the fighter does not lose his optimism and makes plans for the future: after the war, he dreams of opening his own brewery, and his comrades - he already calls them a new family - are ready to support him in this endeavor. 🇷🇺 A wave of arsons has spread throughout Russia.
In the past two days, 15 arson attacks have been carried out all throughout Russia. The damage has been slight and no one has been hurt, but this is still a worrying trend that speaks to increased SBU operations throughout Russia.
Five attacks took place in Moscow; on December 20th a police car and a bank were set on fire. On the 21st, fireworks were launched at multifunctional centers (basically a combination of all government services into one building) and another at a post office.
In Krasnoyarsk, a bank was burned, in Tver and St. Petersburg, a parked police cars was doused in gasoline and set alight. Railway snow clearing equipment was burned in Tobolsk. Today, a pensioner poured flammable liquid into a bank trash can and then tossed a match, all while she was very conspicuously on camera.
All these cases are the work of SBU scammers, who swindle these people out of money and then offer to return it if they carry out an arson attack. After the victim does what they're told, the scammer vanishes.
These attacks are a part of the SBU's campaign to escalate the war to the maximum extent before Trump's inauguration. If they escalate the war to such an extent that Russia refuses to negotiate, then Trump will have no option but to continue the war.
