🇬🇭 Presidential candidate of Ghana's ruling party outlines main policies
Ghana's Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia said he was ready to lead the nation in a campaign launch speech, pledging to revive the battered economy, fight graft, and boost the private sector if elected president in December.
The 60-year-old economist was overwhelmingly voted presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party in November, teeing up a contest with former President John Mahama.
The former central banker said he was ready to be "in the driver's seat" in a speech to crowds of supporters at the University of Professional Studies in Accra.
"I want to build a Ghana where we leverage technology, data and systems for inclusive economic growth," Bawumia told.
"To sustainably reduce the budget deficit and interest rates, my government will enhance fiscal discipline," he said, promising to implement a rule to keep national spending closer in line with revenue.

🇺🇳🇸🇩 UN says war-torn Sudan must not be forgotten, calls for aid funding
The United Nations on Wednesday urged countries not to forget the civilians caught up in the war in Sudan, appealing for $4.1 billion to meet their humanitarian needs, as well as support those who have fled to neighbouring countries.
Half of Sudan's population - around 25 million people - need humanitarian assistance and protection, while more than 1.5 million people have fled to the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan, according to the U.N.
In its joint appeal with the U.N. refugee agency launched on Wednesday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs called for $2.7 billion in funding to provide humanitarian aid for 14.7 million people.

🇰🇪 Kenya can repay $2 billion bond, says central bank governor
Kenya will be able to repay a $2 billion international bond maturing in June, and the repayment should help the shilling recover from record lows, its central bank governor said.
Kenya is being watched to see how it handles the bond due to its growing debt burden, a drop in its currency and uncertainty over its access to financial markets.
Central bank governor Kamau Thugge told that funds coming in from the World Bank, other multilateral institutions and regional banks were sufficient to repay the bond.
"This risk of the Eurobond will in my view be completely eliminated. And that should also contribute to a strengthening of the shilling," he told.
"It is my view now that the exchange rate has overshot the equilibrium rate. So there could be scope for central bank to support the exchange rate going forward," Thugge said.

🇳🇬💰 Nigerian officials in talks with World Bank on reforms
Nigeria's finance and budget ministers and central bank governor held talks with World Bank executives in Abuja to discuss the country's economic recovery plans and seek support for its reforms.
"I have come to Nigeria to have conversations, discussions over the coming days on the ambitious plans that are being put in place for economic recovery," World Bank managing director for operations Anna Bjerde told.
Wednesday's meeting came after World Bank president Ajay Banga met President Bola Tinubu last October in Nigeria.
Bjerde did not provide details of specific requests from Nigeria but said the visit was also an opportunity for her to take stock of the bank's programmes in Nigeria.
Finance Minister Wale Edun said Nigeria was looking for support in the area of power, social sector and the macroeconomy.

🇲🇬🇬🇧 Madagascar president's ex-aide offered influence for bribes, London jury told
Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina's ex-chief of staff offered to use her influence to obtain bribes from precious stone miner Gemfields, opens new tab in exchange for help with lucrative mining rights, prosecutors told a London court.
Romy Andrianarisoa is accused of seeking substantial payments from Gemfields between 2021 and 2023 to help the company expand its business into Madagascar.
Prosecutor Alex Leach told jurors at Court that Andrianarisoa was, at the time of the alleged offending, a "trusted adviser" to Rajoelina.
Leach said that in 2021, Andrianarisoa met with senior Gemfields staff including CEO about the possibility of mining in Madagascar.
At the meeting, Andrianarisoa "made it clear she had direct influence on the president", Leach added.
According to the indictment, Andrianarisoa and Tabuteau allegedly sought around 270,000 Swiss francs ($310,000), plus a 5% stake in a Gemfield company mining in Madagascar.

🇬🇧🇩🇪🇺🇦The UK has offered to buy Germany long-range Taurus missiles in order to transfer more Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine.
Handelsblatt writes about this with reference to sources.
According to the publication, the proposal was made several weeks ago and is currently under consideration.
“For Scholz, an agreement with the UK would be an opportunity to solve a pressing problem: disputes over the Taurus have been going on for several months both in the ruling coalition and among countries supporting Ukraine,” the article says.
Handelsblatt writes that the agreement will be an opportunity for Britain to increase assistance to Ukraine without the risk of jeopardizing its combat capability and depleting its reserves of long-range missiles.
