In most cases, people flee from volcanic eruptions. However, this is not the case for the recent Erta Ale volcano eruptions, which began last Wednesday. The event has turned into an unexpected natural attraction, drawing keen interest from adventure travelers and researchers.

Abdu Ahmed, Director of Resource Promotion and Market Development at the Afar State Tourism Bureau, says, "Visitors currently in the area are watching the eruptions with a mix of awe and fascination. The spectacle has significantly increased tourist activity, especially among foreign visitors who have come to witness this rare phenomenon up close."

Ethiopia’s Parliament has finally given the green light to the Startup Law, which the Council of Ministers approved recently. The law aims to tap into the potential for economic growth by boosting innovation and helping startups get funding.

The plan involves the federal government down to local levels. But while the law indicates a positive impact for the growing startup scene, there are still major concerns about whether this law can tackle the persistent issues like lack of funding, poor infrastructure, and rigid regulations that have held back startups.

Breaking: Visit Oromia's Telegram Channel Hacked

Oromia Tourism makes an announcement that its official Telegram channel 'Visit Oromia' has been hacked. The channel has nearly 18,000 subscribers and is used by Oromia Tourism as a digital broadcasting tool to promote Oromia Region's tourist and travel attractions.
Oromia Tourism further warned it followers not to open links the may see on or receive from the channel until further notice and asked it's follower to a new channel if is setting up.

Ethiopia Considering Reducing Dependence on the Dollar: A Depart from the Bretton Woods Legacy?

In a recent interview, the Minister of Finance, Eyob Tekalign, did with the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, he stated that the Ethiopian government is working on ways to trade in currencies other than the US dollar in order to “facilitate trade and investment cooperation in a way that protects Ethiopia’s interest and expands the country’s access to foreign markets.”

While diversifying currency use in trade could help shield the country from  the vulnerabilities tied to dollar dominance, the challenge lies in the deeply rooted global financial system still influenced  by the Bretton Woods legacy.
Can Ethiopia pull this off?

Ethiopia is positioning itself as Africa’s top pharmaceutical export hub through strategic investment, regulatory reforms, and expanded production. At a July 18, 2025 meeting at Kilinto Industrial Park, officials and partners, including the World Bank, reaffirmed support. “We are placing our bets on Ethiopia,” said Maryam Salim of the World Bank.

The economy is looking stable, and the debt situation is set to shift from high to medium levels in the next few years. There’s a growing interest from private investors in the energy sector, but small and medium-sized businesses are still struggling when it comes to getting non-collateral financing. Digital lending platforms could really help with improving access to loans and boosting financial inclusion.

Former Senegalese professional footballer, El Hadji Diouf, has been named brand ambassador of Wanaw, an Ethiopian sportswear company.

The former international star signed the agreement in Addis Ababa following his visit to the company’s production site at Habte Garment and Printing.

“I have signed a deal with the best sportswear manufacturer in Africa,” Diouf announced after touring the facility.

An Effective Prevention Against HIV?

It seems like the search might be ending. On June 18, the FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) approved Lenacapavir, a drug to prevent HIV that only needs to be taken twice a year.

Lenacapavir currently carries a price tag of 28,000 USD per person per year. This is expensive, even in developed countries. While the drug manufacturer  mentions this large price is the consequence of the R&D cost, questions remain over whether it can be accessed equitably. There is hope that generic version of the drug  can be produced  for as little as 35 to 45 USD per person per year. This is still in the higher price range when converted to local currencies of developing countries.

So, the question is: Will this new drug be accessible and durable through time? Or will it be a medical fortress only for the financially able?

The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute began the fourth edition of the 2025 Youth Summer Camp. The program includes engaging sessions exploring topics such as robotics and machine learning. The summer camp aims to introduce students to solid AI skills to the selected 300 participants while also advancing technological learning. One of the most widely used crypto exchanges among Ethiopian users, Bybit, has announced it will remove support for the Ethiopian Birr (ETB) on its peer-to-peer trading platform.

The announcement, delivered via email to local users, states the change will take effect on July 21, 2025. The move is expected to create major challenges for Ethiopian crypto traders who rely on the platform for direct access to digital assets using their local currency.

Dutch-based Ethiopian entrepreneur Kanessa Muluneh recently announced the launch of the Nyle firm on her social media. Currently operating in Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa, the diaspora-based firm presents a structured investment model for African diasporas. Backed by Epic Edge and led by a founder with $9.5M in merger value, Nyle sets a $50,000 minimum and targets sectors like tech, agriculture, and real estate.
