come una stella cadente;

🥀🥀🥀

When our boss calls us and we feel overwhelmed by anxiety or fear, when someone in the family makes demands of us or is angry with us, when we feel overwhelmed by the world’s endless problems, we always have a choice.
We can feel stuck and constrained, or we can use this difficulty to open ourselves up and discover how to respond wisely
to the surprises of the journey.
Sometimes life flows joyfully, at other times it is more difficult, and at still others deeply painful.
Perhaps there is war all around us.
But whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, we can always take a deep breath, soften our gaze and remember that courage and freedom lie within us, waiting to be awakened and offered to others.

In this life, we are free and capable of love, regardless of everything else.
Deep down, we know this to be true.
We recognise it every time we feel part of something greater:
when we listen to music,
when we make love,
on a walk in the mountains or perhaps a lovely swim in the sea; or even when we stand beside the mystery of a person who is dying and see their spirit leaving the body in silence,
like a shooting star;
or when we witness the miracle of a child’s birth.
In moments like these, we feel a joyful harmony with the world blossoming within us, and our hearts are filled with peace.
Freedom begins here, where we are.

“Inspirando vedo me stesso come un vasto spazio; espirando mi sento libero”.

The Pebble Meditation

Go for a walk and collect four small pebbles; put them in a bag and keep them in your pocket at all times.

The first pebble will represent the flower.
I place it on my left hand and say: ‘As I breathe in, I see myself and my body as a flower; as I breathe out, I feel as fresh as a flower’, three times.
Through the freshness of the flower, we too become fresher and more beautiful.
Those who suffer and are sad lose much of their own freshness; in this way, it will be easier to regain it.

The second pebble represents the mountain.
So I say: “As I breathe in, I see myself as a mountain; as I breathe out, I feel solid” three times.
The mountain represents stability and solidity.
Those who are agitated cannot be happy; constant ups and downs make one unstable.
Anger and fear cannot sweep me away, because I am as stable as a mountain and offer stability to those around me.

The third pebble is the calm water of a mountain lake.
I place it in my hand and say: “As I breathe in, I see myself as still water; as I breathe out, I reflect things as they truly are”.
When water is calm, it reflects everything as it is; when it is agitated, it reflects things in a distorted way, and so it is with our minds.
When we are angry or agitated, we do not see things clearly.

The fourth pebble is space, the space in which to move freely; it is freedom.
“As I breathe in, I see myself as a vast space; as I breathe out, I feel free”.

Few people truly grow.
Growing up isn’t about building a career; making money has nothing to do with it.
You grow up in your soul.
As a result, your mind is transformed.
This is where the capacity to love comes into play.
We can love if we have been loved, or we can love if we manage to understand why and how we were not loved.
To love others, we must love our inner child – that is, ourselves as children.

In tedesco, significa
In silenzio.
Analizzando il tavolo da gioco.
Minuti dopo, la guida tornò.
— Stiamo andando.
— Come cosa?

A volte, tutto intorno a noi grida: "È finita. Scacco matto."
Ma non è finita.
Il re ha ancora una mossa.
E finché c'è movimento, c'è speranza.

♟️

In the Louvre Museum, amongst so many magnificent works, there is a painting that inspires more than mere admiration; it invites reflection.

The title of the work is “Die Schachspieler”.
In German, this means
“The Chess Players”.
In the scene, a silent game is taking place: on one side, the devil watches with a serious expression, staring at the young man.
On the other, the young man stares at the chessboard with a lost look — as if all hope had vanished.
In the background, an angelic figure observes the scene with a sad expression.
Like someone who is watching, but cannot intervene.
More than a painting, it is a symbolic battle between perdition and hope.
During a guided tour of the museum, a group of athletes stopped in front of the work.
Among them was a world chess champion.
The guide explained:
“This painting depicts a man who has lost a game against the devil. A game for the soul.”
The group moved on.
But the champion stayed behind.
In silence.
Studying the chessboard.
A few minutes later, the guide returned.
— We’re leaving. Are you staying here?
— Something’s not right here,” replied the champion, without looking away.
— What do you mean?
— I’ve been studying chess for years. And looking closely, I’ve noticed something.
Then he turned and said:
“The king still has one move left.”

This story is a powerful metaphor.
How often does life make us believe it’s all over?
When debts are piling up.
When a marriage is on the rocks.
When children drift away.
When health fails.
When dreams seem buried.
Sometimes, everything around us screams: “It’s over. Checkmate.”
But it’s not over.
The king still has one move left.
And as long as there is movement, there is hope.

For what it’s worth, it’s never too late – or, in my case, too early – to be who you want to be.
There’s no time limit; start whenever you like.
You can change, or you can stay as you are; there’s no rule about it.
We can experience everything for better or for worse.
I hope you experience everything for the better.
I hope you get to see amazing things.
I hope you get to feel new emotions all the time.
I hope you meet people with different perspectives.
I hope you can be proud of your life.
And if you realise you aren’t, I hope you find the strength to start again.

One day, you’ll suddenly miss the life that seems so difficult to you today.
The problems you can’t wait to escape from now will become memories you look back on with a tenderness you never expected.
You rush through your days convinced that everything is too complicated, too stressful and too much to handle.
You just want to get to the next stage where perhaps things will be easier, but when that day comes, you’ll look back and realise that these difficult moments weren’t actually that bad.
You’ll miss the freedom you had, the possibilities you didn’t see, the simplicity you couldn’t recognise because you were too focused on what wasn’t working.
It happens to everyone.
We convince ourselves we’re suffering, only to look back years later and long for precisely those situations we wanted to escape from.
Stop waiting for everything to get better, because what seems unbearable today might be exactly what you miss the most tomorrow.

The older you get, the quieter you become.
Not because you have less to say, but because you’ve finally realised what’s really worth saying.
Life humbles you in ways you’d never have expected.
You start to see how much energy you’ve wasted on things that didn’t matter at all.
How much time you’ve wasted trying to impress people who’d forgotten all about you the very next day.
You stop trying to fix relationships that were over from the start.
You really start to accept things for what they are, not for what you wish they were.
But above all, you stop worrying about what others think of your choices.
And it’s one of the most liberating feelings there is.
You finally live for yourself, not for other people’s expectations.

La mia ciotola mi ricorda la terra.
Quando piove questa terra contiene il cielo.
Sembra una bugia, ma non lo è.
Ecco come fa:
il cielo bussa gocciolando e inizia a versarsi lentamente nelle ciotola.
Da infinito si fa finito.
Prende corpo piccolo.

My bowl reminds me of the earth.
When it rains, this earth holds the sky.
It sounds like a lie, but it isn’t.
This is how it happens:
the sky knocks, dripping, and begins to pour slowly into the bowl.
From the infinite, it becomes finite.
It takes on a small form.
Then the sky peeks out little by little, and the stars and the moon are reflected in it.
See, it’s not a lie!”

Of all the paths you choose, of all the crossroads that make you pause and reflect, of every possible path, enjoy that first step – because the first step is never just a step, but a transition.
It is a declaration of existence.
It is the moment when you stop waiting for life to happen to you and decide to make it happen yourself.
The first step doesn’t know where to go; it has no guarantees.
Sometimes it trembles a little because the path of joy also involves the company of fear.
But enjoy that first step, for it trusts you, and it is precious to devote time to those around us who place their trust in us.
It’s the hardest one to take, I know.
Because it carries the full weight of all the steps you haven’t taken before.
All the excuses, all the fears…

Embrace the stranger, bless the new, celebrate the different, and then don’t think about it anymore.
Just move.
Do you know how?
Just as living things do.

Pain is the price of growth.
Every master was once a disaster who simply refused to give up.
The people we admire most did not avoid pain.
They simply learnt to experience it differently.
They did not treat it as a stop sign, but as a compass pointing the way to their next stage of development.
Comfort, on the other hand, is the most expensive thing we can afford.
The paradox of life is that we grow the most precisely in the moments when we feel most broken.
The real question is not whether we will feel pain, but whether that pain will shape us or define us, whether we treat it as a fixed point.
Or as a comma in a much longer sentence we are still writing.
So the choice is simple.
Pay the price of transformation or accumulate the debt of regret.
Two paths, both with consequences that last a lifetime.
Choose carefully.
One hurts for a season; the other will haunt you forever.

You’re afraid of what others think.
But do you know who ‘others’ are?
They’re people who are afraid of what you think.
Everyone is playing the same part.
Everyone worries about how they look whilst watching how others look.
It’s a theatre where no one is really watching the show because everyone is too busy wondering how they’re performing.
And yet we let this invisible theatre decide everything:
what we wear, what we say, what we dream of, what we use.
We give up things we love for fear of people we won’t even remember tomorrow.
But think about the last time you judged someone harshly.
How long did you think about it afterwards?
Five minutes.
Then you got on with your life.
That’s how much space you take up in other people’s minds.
Exactly how much they take up in yours.
Almost nothing.
So stop living for an audience that isn’t watching.
The stage is yours.
Act for yourself.

Yes, I could do that.

All right.
Let’s look at the logic.
You create man.
Man endures pain and enormous suffering; at the end of his life, man dies.
You could have worked on it a bit more before moving straight on to creation.
You rested on the seventh day.
You could have devoted that seventh day to compassion.

🥀

One day I left my hermitage to go for a walk.
It was a beautiful morning so before I went out I opened all the windows and doors, but around four in the afternoon the weather changed: the wind picked up and it started to rain.
I knew I had better go home.
Once I arrived I found my hermitage in a terrible state: it was dark and cold inside, it was depressing; it was no longer a pleasant place to be.
But I knew what I had to do.
The first thing was to close all the doors and windows; the second was to light a fire in the wood stove.
Then I lit a kerosene lamp and went to collect the sheets of paper that the wind had scattered everywhere.
After putting everything back in its place, I sat by the fireplace and warmed myself by the fire.
By then the hermitage was once again an intimate and pleasant place to be.

This image can illustrate what to do when we feel depressed in everyday life.
We try very hard, but the harder we try, the worse we feel.
We try to say or do something to improve the situation but it does not work.
That is the time to return to our inner hermitage and close all the windows.
Come 'home' to yourself through conscious breathing and recognise the feelings within.
Perhaps there are feelings of anger, fear, anxiety or despair within you; whatever feeling is there, recognise it and embrace it with great tenderness.

It’s never too late to change.
It doesn’t matter how much time has passed.
Nor how many mistakes you’ve made: you still have the strength within you to grow, heal and start afresh.
Progress has no expiry date.
Regret only takes hold if you let it.
If you let it stop you from trying again.
The past cannot be changed, but what you choose to do now is still in your hands.
You are not defined by what went wrong.
But by what you decide to do at this very moment.
Moving forward doesn’t mean erasing the past, but deciding that your past has no right to dictate your future.
