Fermarsi e respirare

Stop and breathe

I know a good method to remember to stop and breathe when you are nervous or angry.
First, go for a walk and choose a pebble that you like.
Then, go and sit near the Buddha, if there is one in your house, or outside under a special tree or rock that is especially dear to you, or simply in your room.
With the pebble in your hand, say:

"Dear Buddha,
this is my pebble.
I will practice with it when things go a little wrong with me.
Whenever I get angry or am about to get upset, I will take the pebble in my hand and breathe deeply.
I will do this until I calm down."

Now put your pebble in your pocket and carry it with you wherever you go.
When something happens during the day that makes you unhappy, put your hand in your pocket, clutch the pebble, breathe deeply and say to yourself:

"On the inhale, I know I am angry.
By exhaling, I take good care of my anger."

Do this until you feel better and can smile at your anger.

You know, you’re my “thank goodness”.
It’s not a bad thing – in fact, it’s brilliant: it’s like saying “thank goodness you’re here”,
“thank goodness you love me”,
“thank goodness you make everything perfect even when it isn’t”.
You’re my “thank goodness” because… well, because everything’s been “thank goodness” ever since I’ve had you.

Un maestro alla ricerca del suo discepolo

Ho iniziato a cercarti, figlio mio,
ho scrutato terre lontane
e riconosciuto le tue orme
in tanti sentieri diversi.
Dove stai andando figlio mio?
tuttavia tu continuavi a vagare in quelle terre lontane.
restando in silenzio per ore, uno accanto all’altro,
Hai raccolto e dato a me la prima foglia d’autunno

dopo decenni passati a vagabondare in posti lontani.
Qualche volta ti sei disteso incosciente
Qualche volta ti ho riconosciuto a Birmingham,
Qualche volta ti ho incontrato a Shanghai, San Pietroburgo o a Berlino Est.
Qualche volta, benché tu avessi solo 5 anni, ti hi riconosciuto,

Spesso ti ho visto,

And we’re also foolish because we insist on comparing ourselves to other people’s lives, which all seem perfectly tailored, neatly arranged and tidy to us – and perhaps they only seem so perfect because we’re viewing them from a distance.
Instead, all we see before our eyes are these meaningless scraps of paper.
Which are a far cry from the shape we had
imagined.
But we can still huddle round the fire and remind ourselves that, in the end, all pieces of paper are good for keeping warm, and sometimes that’s all you need by the fire.

One of the most important skills you can learn is maintaining a positive mindset even when you have a hundred reasons not to.
Anyone can feel good when life is easy.
That requires nothing.
The real work is choosing your state of mind when everything around you is giving you permission to break down.
Bad news comes along.
Plans fail.
People let you down.
And yet, despite it all, it’s still up to you to decide how to react.
Your state of mind isn’t something that simply happens to you.
It’s something that protects you.
Something you choose.
Even when choosing it is the hardest thing you’ll have to do that day.
A real skill.
Don’t avoid problems.
But learn to manage yourself in the midst of them.

Hai portato tanta bellezza, gioia e sollievo agli esseri viventi.
lo sono in loro, e loro sono in me.

Dear Buddha, I see that I am the ocean; all the rivers of planet Earth flow into me.
I see myself as vapour turning into clouds, rejoicing in travelling through the sky and turning into rain, snow or hail falling on mountain peaks and immense forests.
I see myself transformed into streams of water, which little by little return to the ocean.
I bring life to millions, to millions of species, to the trees, to the earth, refreshing them, nourishing and healing existence.
I know I am about to return to the ocean, but I am in no hurry, because at this moment I have become the ocean; I am already the ocean.
I am this particular river, but I am also other rivers.
There has never been a moment when I have not been water, not been the ocean.
That is why I am in no hurry.
I rejoice in the passing of time, using it to make life and all species beautiful.
Dear Buddha, you are also the ocean.
You have also been clouds, snow and rivers.
You continue to be ocean, clouds, snow and river.
You are not just one river.
You are many rivers, and I am the same.
You have brought so much beauty, joy and relief to living beings.
I am in them, and they are in me.

I am as close to you as you would like me to be,
for I am already a thought in your mind, and all that I am comes from that thought, just as what I am not comes from a different thought.
You will have to learn this through experience.
Some claim that I speak through them, but they are listening to another voice.
My voice never condemns nor instils fear.
My intention is to bless everyone.
I would like to let you know once and for all that you are not guilty except in your own minds, and that imaginary guilt can and must be eliminated.
My teaching is simply this:
I preach the forgiveness of sins.
I teach that sin in itself is not sin, but that it only seems so because you believe you can be hurt.
You think you are a body, and when the body is hurt, you believe an injustice has been done to you.
I understand how difficult it is for you to let go of this belief, yet that is what I
ask you to do.
You are not the body, for the body is born and dies, whilst you are neither born nor do you die.
You are not a limited thought, for every thought that limits you is a body that begins and
ends.
The body is merely the extent of your beliefs. […]

I am a thought without limits, for I am in constant expansion towards the formlessness
of God.
There is no form that can contain me.
I am united with God in perfect forgiveness.
I am free from guilt.
I am free from resentment.
I do not believe anyone can wrong me, nor do I believe I have the power to wrong others, for I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that every living being is equal before God.

Nothing is truly random.
Every person you meet comes into your life for a reason.
To teach you something, to heal you, to love you, or to break you in ways that force you to grow.
When you start to see it that way, everything changes.
The person who hurt you was not a mistake.
The friendship that faded away was not a waste of time. Even those who left without explanation had a role to play.
Everyone who crossed your path was meant to do so in some way.
It is an idea that can be reassuring or unsettling, because if nothing was by chance, then you can no longer blame luck or fate.
You must accept that even the most painful parts were part of the journey.

According to God, I was born from a rib
But he doesn’t know he was born from my fear
If I’d been Eve, I’d have swallowed the core too
Along with the whole apple and its seeds
Life, here I am, I want to be light without staying
On the surface like the sea level
I just hope that my heaviness
Isn’t mistaken for my depth
I never speak without saying stupid things
I like, you know, even taking the mickey out of myself
Boasting about the way I fuck
In front of you, still feeling like a novice
I don’t want to plan, think about what to do
Give meaning to evil and not go through it.
Endure emotions, know your secrets
I want to make everything I take in with my eyes beautiful.

The toughest challenge you’ll face in life is finding the balance between what you want and what you really need.
You want to stay up late but you need proper rest; you want that dopamine rush, but you need to focus.
This conflict forces you to admit that your desires hold more power than your needs.
There are two versions of yourself inside.
One wants comfort, approval, shortcuts and instant relief; the other needs friction, discipline and delayed gratification.
One wants to feel good right now.
The other wants to live well in the future, and you live right at the point of collision between these two selves.
The paradox is that what you desire often protects your most fragile side, whilst what you need builds up your strongest side, because freedom isn’t about doing whatever takes your fancy.
It’s about choosing what you truly need, trusting that your future self will be grateful for it.

This is the basic wall.
You let everyone in.
Then there’s this other wall: only close friends are allowed inside.
Acquaintances aren’t allowed in; this is just for the people you love.
When Mario turns up asking for a leaflet for the caciocavallo festival, tell him to get lost.

Who can get in here?
No one.
This is the fortress.
If anyone sneaks in, it all comes crashing down.
Maybe it’ll grow on you, you’ll get used to it.
But sooner or later they’ll discover a trapdoor.
They open it and what do they find?
A weed, ugly and full of thorns.
What do they do?
They run away and take everything with them, leaving holes and cracks.

You can hold your breath for a long time, wander the world.
But at the end of the day, you have to say goodbye and return to the only place where you can breathe: the only place where the air is breathable for your diseased lungs.
At the bottom of that trapdoor, you go into the midst of those twisted thorns.

Isn’t it ironic that you can’t change until you fully accept who you are?
It’s a real paradox.
You might think that accepting yourself means standing still, but in reality it’s the opposite.
The more you fight against who you are, the more stuck you remain, but the moment you stop fighting, change finally becomes possible.
Why is that?
Because hating yourself drains you.
Denying your flaws prevents you from facing them, and pretending to be different from who you are disconnects you from reality, but when you finally accept yourself with all your imperfections, something inside you unlocks.
You stop wasting energy on denial.
You begin to see clearly what needs fixing, and only then can things truly change because you are no longer fighting against yourself.
The paradox is that self-acceptance feels like surrender.
But that is precisely what sets you free.
You must be at peace with who you are before you can become who you want to be.

Dear girl, yesterday I saw you living your life.
Just a little bit – it’s not as if I was standing there spying on you.
You caught my eye, so I watched you for a while
And I wanted to say thank you.
I wanted to tell you that you know how to live life whilst doing a really great job on yourself.
You can tell it’s not a great time, eh?
Because a bit of the glue has seeped out from the edges of the wounds you’re carrying around.
But I wanted to tell you that you’re absolutely shattered.
I mean, you’re hurting but you’re okay—I can’t explain it any better.
I mean, you really know how to handle pain.
You clearly embrace it, work through it; I can tell from the fact that you never turn it into anger and that you don’t take it out on the people around you.

A master in search of his disciple

I began to search for you, my son,
when the rivers and mountains were still shrouded in darkness.
I sought you whilst you were still in a deep sleep,
even though time and again the echo of the conch shell
resounded in all ten directions.
Without leaving our ancient mountain,
I scanned distant lands
and recognised your footprints
on so many different paths.
Where are you going, my son?
There were times when the mist descended
and shrouded the remote villages,
yet you continued to wander in those distant lands.
I have called your name with every breath,
trusting that though you had lost your way,
in the end you would find a path back to me.
Sometimes I appear right on the path you are walking,
yet you still look at me as if I were a stranger.
You cannot see the connection between us, from past lives.
You cannot remember the ancient promise you made.
You did not recognise me because your mind is trapped in images
of a distant future.
In past lives, you often took my hand
and we walked together in joy.
We sat together for a long time, at the foot of the old pines,
remaining in silence for hours, side by side,
listening to the sound of the wind gently calling us
and gazing at the white clouds floating up above.
You picked and gave me the first autumn leaf
and I took you and led you through the snow-filled forest.
But wherever we go, we will always return to our old mountain
to be closer to the moon and the stars,
to invite the great bell to ring every morning,
to help human beings awaken.[…]

Together we blazed the trail and walked in the space beyond space,
after many years of labour to tear the web of time to shreds.
We have saved the light of shooting stars
and made it into a torch to help those who wish to return home,
after decades spent wandering in distant places.
But there have been times when the seed of the wanderer
within you has come back to life.
You left your teacher, your brothers and sisters.
I look upon you with compassion,
I know this is no true separation
(for I am already present in every cell of your body).
Perhaps you just need to play the prodigal son once more.
That is why I have promised that I shall be there for you
whenever you are in danger.
Sometimes you have lain unconscious
in the hot sand of the frontier deserts.
I manifested myself as a cloud to bring you cool shade.
Later, in the night, the cloud became dew
and its compassionate nectar fell, drop by drop, to quench your thirst.
Sometimes you sit in a deep abyss of darkness,
completely estranged from your true home.
I appeared as a long staircase
and descended gently towards you so that you might climb up into the light
and rediscover the blue of the sky and the sounds of the stream and the birds.
Sometimes I recognised you in Birmingham,
in the district of Do Linh or in New England.
Sometimes I met you in Shanghai, St Petersburg or East Berlin.
Sometimes, even though you were only five years old, I recognised you,
because you carried the seed of bodhichitta in your tender heart.

I have often seen you,
but you have not seen me,
as you walked through the evening mist with your clothes soaked through.
But in the end you always returned home to our old mountain, sat at my feet,
to listen to the birdsong, the cries of the monkeys
and the morning chant echoing from the Buddha hall.
You returned to me determined never to wander again.
You and I have never truly been apart.
Spring has arrived.
The pines have sprouted bright new green needles
and, at the edge of the forest, the wild plum trees
have burst into bloom.

Do you know when peace comes?
When you stop needing it.
You spend so much time fighting what you can’t change.
You wish people were different.
That things had turned out differently.
But none of this is within your control.
You can’t stop people from leaving.
You can’t force life to be fair.
You can’t make the world kinder just because you need a break.
But you can choose how to react.
You can decide what to give your energy to.
You can choose what’s worth holding on to and what’s best to let go of.
Let people talk.
Let life happen.
Let go of what you cannot control.
And take full responsibility for what you can.
Your mind, your reactions, your focus.

Remember that this human experience is temporary.
You arrive with nothing, spend your life chasing everything, and in the end you leave again with nothing.
Money, cars, the house, all the things you’ve stressed over, the promotions for which you’ve sacrificed your health.
None of this will come with you.
So what’s the point?
We exhaust ourselves collecting things that will never follow us through the exit door.
Make sure your soul gains more than your hands.
Make sure you have lived, not just accumulated.
Make sure you have loved deeply.
Not just worked endlessly.
The things you cannot measure are the ones that really matter.
Your hands will be empty when you leave.
Make sure your soul is not.

Oh, the first time I saw Alice was in 2001. I didn’t understand a single thing; I was 17 and sitting my A-levels at the same time as Roma won the Scudetto.

Back then, specifically, I’d just got back from the G8 in Genoa where they’d beaten us to a pulp.

All this to say we were all in a whirlwind of emotions where we didn’t understand a thing.
One moment you had Manu Chao telling you that if you wanted to live well you had to have three hundred shags a day, and the next Tiziano Ferro saying you should throw yourself off the bridge in Ariccia.
Mao claimed, ‘Great is the confusion under heaven; the situation is excellent’.
I don’t know about that, but if he was referring to hormonal confusion, I for one remember that towards the end of that summer I was at a concert with my friend Sara, who one day said to me, ‘Zero, this is Alice, a friend of mine – have a quick chat with her while I go and get some beers.’

Taking demons for demons, that is the danger.
Knowing them to be vain, there is the way.
To understand what they really are, here is the deliverance.
Acknowledge them as father and mother, here is their end.
Admitting them as a creation of the mind,
There they turn into ornament.
Knowing these uses, the All will be liberated.

Krishna, Buddha, Mosè, Maometto, Lao Tzu e molti altri stanno consapevolmente insieme a lui lì, o forse più precisamente dovrei dire "qui".

To think that Jesus is separate from and independent of
your mind is to fail to understand the reality of
things: it is precisely within your mind that Jesus speaks to you.
He is the closest friend who speaks to you, sometimes through words, sometimes with words, sometimes beyond words.
Your
communication and communion with him are essential to putting his teachings into practice.
Let us make it clear straight away that Jesus has no exclusive place in the Mind of Christ:
Krishna, Buddha, Moses, Muhammad, Lao Tzu and many others are consciously with him there—or perhaps more precisely I should say ‘here’.
If you feel more at ease turning to Buddha or Krishna, by all means do so.
Jesus will not take offence; on the contrary, he will be pleased to see you following his teaching of non-separation.
We all share in and communicate with the Mind of Christ (you may say the Mind of Buddha or Brahma or the Holy Spirit if you prefer) inasmuch as we are all united with the Mind of God.
If this were not so, our experience would be completely dark, with not even the promise of redemption.
Each of us possesses a tiny spark of light that illuminates the darkness of our unawareness.
It is the divine spark of awareness that keeps our connection with God alive.
This spark also connects us to the divine teacher in our tradition and to the divine essence of our brothers and sisters.

Be proud of yourself because no one really knows what it means to be you, day in, day out.
No one knows the battles you face in silence, the challenges you overcome every day, or the strength it takes to pick yourself up time and time again.
Every lesson you refuse to learn will keep coming back in new forms until you’re willing to change.
A negative mind can never build a positive life, and change begins within you – in the way you think, the way you talk to yourself, the choices you make each new day.

And the houses we live in aren’t made of stone, but they aren’t made of straw either.
They’re made of all the rubbish we’ve accumulated over the years.
A jumble of scrap metal, a makeshift contraption held together by spit and Xanax.
With debts we can never repay and promises made and received that no one ever keeps.
And inside are we.
Huddled up and alone, praying that the wolf won’t come and blow down our door tonight.

malattia, perdita, delusione, ansia, rifiuto, invecchiamento.
Ma poi arriva la seconda freccia.

"Perché sta succedendo a me?"

The Two Arrows

In this parable, also known as
‘The Parable of the Arrow’, the Buddha offers one of the
most psychologically profound teachings in Buddhism.

He states that when an ordinary person experiences pain and suffering, it is like being struck by two arrows.
The first arrow is the inevitable pain of life:
illness, loss, disappointment, anxiety, rejection, ageing.
But then comes the second arrow.

“Why is this happening to me?”
“What if it gets worse?” “This shouldn’t be happening.”
“I’ll never recover from this.”

The mind resists the pain,
constructs stories around it,
fears it, relives it and
feeds it
with incessant thoughts.
This second arrow is often more painful than the first.
The Buddha teaches that, although physical and emotional pain may arise in life, much of human suffering
is intensified by attachment and mental resistance.
The awakened mind still feels the pain,
but does not continually wound itself with fear, resentment and rumination.
This teaching seems deeply relevant today.
Modern minds are often
trapped in vicious circles of anxiety, anticipation and inner storytelling.
A difficult moment
turns into a hundred imagined moments.
Meditation and mindfulness, therefore, are not
ways to escape pain.
They are ways of not adding
the second arrow.
And in that space, suffering begins to subside.
