Saint Onuphrius the Great
Born in fourth century Egypt and raised in a monastery near Hermopolis, young Onuphrius learned from the monks about the angelic life of the desert dwellers and he longed to live like them. One night, he secretly left the monastery and followed a brilliant ray of light into the desert until he found a cave where an old man lived. The elder taught Onuphrius about the life of solitude and the war against demonic temptation and then led him to another cave and left him alone, visiting him once a year. Saint Onuphrius lived in complete isolation for over 60 years, cared for by the Lord. Near his cave, a date tree bore fruit all year and a spring issued forth pure water. An angel brought Holy Communion to the saint every Saturday and Sunday. When it was time for Onuphrius to join Christ, God sent the monk Paphnutius to find him. Paphnutius learned the great ascetic's life story, he prayed and chanted with him, ate angelic bread with him, and when the saint reposed, he buried his body.
