When you do not have much time for prayer, be content with what you have, and God will accept your will; remember that the publican's feeling is pleasing to God in prayer, and be careful not to put a price on your prayer: this is God's work, not ours.
In your present vain time, if you happen to fail to fulfill the rule, do not be embarrassed, but replace it with humility.

Saint Tikhone de Zadonsk

secular name Timofey Savelyevich Sokolov (1724, Novgorod region – 1783, Zadonskiy Nativity Virgin Monastery).
Russian Orthodox bishop and spiritual writer whom the Eastern Orthodox Church glorified (canonized) as a saint in 1861.

While standing in church attend diligently to the reading and singing. This gives birth to compunction, true prayer, heartfelt singing and thanksgiving.
Avoid, then, standing bodily in church while wandering outside the church in mind, and standing bodily before God while wandering about in spirit in worldly affairs, lest that saying be applied to you, “his people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoureth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me” (Mt. 15:8).

GLOSSAIRE SUCCINCT DES TERMES LITURGIQUES

Canon : constitué de neuf odes (la seconde n’est lue que pendant le Grand Carême), commençant par un hirmos, continuant par plusieurs tropaires en l’honneur de la fête ou du saint commémoré, puis se terminant par une catavasia.

Catavasia : nom donné à l’hirmos, lorsqu’il est repris, les jours de fête, à la fin de chaque ode du canon

Exapostilaire : chant précédant les Laudes après le canon des matines.

Hirmos : chant commençant chaque ode du canon, basé sur des textes scripturaires. Par exemple, l’hirmos de la première ode est le récit abrégé du cantique de Moïse (Exode XV, 1,19). Néanmoins, les jours de grande fête, référence est faite seulement à l’événement commémoré, par exemple ici à la Nativité du Christ.

Ikos : strophe suivant le kondakion.

Kondakion : hymne décrivant en général les circonstances extérieures de la fête, placé après la 6è ode du canon.

Prokiménon : littéralement, ce qui est placé avant. Versets des psaumes chantés avant l’évangile des matines ou l’épître lue à la Liturgie.

Stichère : tropaire intercalé entre les versets des psaumes du lucernaire aux vêpres et des laudes aux matines.

Tropaire : courte composition en l’honneur d’une fête ou d’un saint. Généralement, le tropaire d’une fête donne plutôt son sens intérieur, spirituel, tandis que le kondakion décrit les circonstances de l’événement.
