Looking for an "easy" method to GPU procgen

I would like to make a procedural planet, so render huge worlds. I already managed to do this with the CPU and without LOD. It uses the inflated cube method, it's not voxels, so quadtrees could work.

What would be the next step to make the procedural generation more efficent, to create bigger world ?

I assume the optimal thing would be a quadtree algorithm running on the GPU, but the implementation I found here are hard to implement because I don't understand it fully, and it runs on a geometry shader (which I don't have access to, because I'm gonna use Godot compute shaders). So if anyone has an easier implementation to GPU quadtrees, or even just a suggestion for a "good enough" algorithm for huge worlds, I'd be happy to hear about it.

Mods, can we allow videos in this subreddit please?

A lot of procedural generation content is best showed as video. It would be an obvious choice to allow videos in this subreddit, wouldn't it? Mods, can we do that?

We already see lots of videos in this subreddit, but it's based on confusing and deceptive restrictions. To be clear, this all relates to how reddit works in general; I'm not accusing mods of this subreddit for this mess:

In various parts of the interface, the subreddit interface claims that videos are not allowed.
However, if you use the Image tab under Create Post and try to drop a video, it will appear to let you do that as long as the video is shorter than 60 seconds. The interface claims that the video will be converted to a GIF.
The part about converting to a GIF is just straight up a lie though, they actually remain videos. For example see [this post of mine](https://www.reddit.com/r/proceduralgeneration/comments/17h50a8/procedural_water_stream_with_varying_amounts_of/). I uploaded it as a video and it also plays back as a video. And it's never been converted to a GIF as an intermediary step either; that would have reduced the colors to a palette of max 256 colors, and that clearly hasn't happened. So despite what the interface claims, videos are sometimes successfully posted, although the audio is stripped.
However, it only works sometimes. Today I tried to use the exact same approach to post a video again. The first time I dropped it, reddit said it was too long, and I could post a video shorter than 60 seconds to have it converted to a "GIF". I then tried with a shorter version of the video and dropping it did work then: The video appeared in the post draft with the Make GIF toggle underneath the video toggled on and grayed out (since it cannot be disabled). However, when I tried to click the Post button, red text appeared underneath saying "This community doesn't allow videos". So the interface first tells me to post a shorter video, and then when I do that, it ultimately rejects it anyway at a later step. Even though it worked fine in the past and probably still works fine for others too and maybe will for me in the future. I have no idea what the actual criteria are for whether a video gets accepted or not when clicking the Post button. I have also seen comments from others in this subreddit about not being able to post short videos even though they followed the same steps that sometimes work fine.

Now supposedly, if this subreddit were to switch a toggle to actually allow videos, these maddeningly confusing and deceptive restrictions would no longer be there.

If one searches for how to allow videos on subreddits, every result has replies that it can't be done for subreddits that are private or allow NSFW content. Since it's possible to apply a NSFW tag when posting here, I'm guessing NSFW content is currently allowed in this subreddit? I assume that would have to go to be able to post videos here.

What do you all think about that? What do you value more:

The ability to post NSFW content?
Or the ability to post videos (consistently and without the above restrictions)?

I would respect either choice, but it seems to me that in this community, way more people would benefit from being able to post videos than people who would benefit from being allowed to post NSFW content.

I'd love to hear what you all think, and what the mods stance are on videos here.

Any current gaps in PCG research that's feasible for a bachelor's thesis?

Hello, I'm new to Procedural Content Generation and I'm interested in diving into this topic for my bachelor's thesis. What are the current research problems as of now in PCG? Specifically in optimization part? Most of the recommended sections in papers that I've red are mostly about improvements of their work.

P.S. Is there any discord server for this subreddit or just any server for PCG enthusiasts? I want to join.

Are compute shaders limited in PCG?

Hello guys,

I managed to create procedural planets using the CPU, and I was now wondering about if I should try the generation using the GPU and compute shaders. But I don't know exactly the limitations of it. For example, can I generate the same kind of stuff I would generate on the CPU ? I see that Perlin noise seems to be available in HLSL, but what about voronoi cells, or other algorithms ? I am afraid to end up limited in the generation by going this way.

So I'd appreciate if anybody used compute shaders before, and could indicate the plus and cons of using them, regarding PCG.

Thanks !

Some city names from generated languages I'm working on

Naz Nuth If Am Zhzip Shu Et Oming

I'm roughly basing myself on Martin O'Leary's work, but with a couple of differences.

For one, I'm not using a squared random number to create bias, but am actually using a Zipf-Mandelbrot distribution (which works for word frequencies, so I assumed it works for letter frequencies too).

For another, I occasionally generate a language that has more than one syllable pattern to make some languages look (even) less regular.

For yet another, the set of consonants that are used in a language is drawn from three pools: 8-20 of the common ones nkmtrlhpswjbd, 0-8 of uncommon ones gʔʧŋʃɣfq, and 0-7 of the rare ones vʤzcχθʒ. The sets are then shuffled individually and concatenated, and then Zipf-Mandelbrot is applied. The ordering I got from this paper, which I didn't actually read properly, but it works for me.

I also messed with the orthography, adding e.g. the Turkish ı, Scandinavian ø, English th, and more such twists to increase the fun.

Advice for procedurally generating a 2D city in sideview, i.e. for a sidescroller or Terraria-like game?

Hello. I'm looking for some advice about a project I'm starting out. I'm hoping to procedurally generate modern-style cities using a finite set of pixel art assets. I want the view to be like that of a sidescroller, but when I search for 2D procedurally generated cities, I only find topdown ones.

The only thing that I know of that is even close to this is Starbound's villages / cities. However, the cities themselves I think are just premade assets that are dumped wholesale into a procedurally generated world, so I don't think it's really what I'm looking for in terms of the generation process. But in terms of the end result, it's similar to what I'd hope to generate procedurally in a sideview.

Does anyone know of any game that has successfully done what I'm describing? Or any methods that would be helpful? I'm having trouble thinking of how exactly to plan this out
