In-Group Cringe: Insecurity Breeds Persecution Fetishes?

in Cringe, Natalie develops these different kinds of ‘cringe’, including in-group cringe. she exemplifies all of this with trans communities: people cringe at people who they are similar to (at least in one way that is important enough to differentiate an in-group from the out-group). through cringe, they start creating this idea of being ‘true’ members of the in-group and they start persecuting/investigating ‘fakers’/‘trenders’/whathaveyou so that they can say ‘I am the real X not a fake X like that person’ with a nice megaphone

I feel like Natalie hints at/entertains the idea that this persecution fetish might be based in some sort of insecurity of the ‘true’ members about their membership status: are they really the real deal? don’t they sometimes have doubts? or are not ‘in line’ the way they think everyone else should be? etc — basically persecuting ‘trenders’ to exorcise the ‘trender’ within

today, I had a somewhat unhinged interaction with someone on reddit and their whole thing seemed to be identifying people who ‘fake mental conditions’; and sure enough: r/fakedisordercringe is a thing (because of course it is) — while my first impression of that space is not that it is mostly populated by people who will fight anyone in a thread and allege that everyone is faking everything (except for the person themself, of course), but the idea of ‘cringe’ is in the name, so I guess it applies

if we apply this in-group cringe to persecution fetish through insecurity pipeline to mental health: is it a common theme in mental health spaces that people are insecure about their diagnoses? like, after I was first diagnosed, I spent a lot of time over at r/bipolar2 and there was a running joke that basically you questioning your diagnosis is just a symptom of slipping into (hypo)mania and the next thing you’ll do is quitting your meds cold turkey. so I thought it might be specific to this community side note: the idea of ‘you disagreeing with an external judgment means that you’ve lost your ability to make sound judgments and you’re proving the correctness of the judgment’ always gives me chills

and of course, there are people who feel good in the morning after their mom made them breakfast but feel bad in the evening after receiving a C on a test who then take to the internet to talk about their rapid cycling bipolar disorder. or people who like things neat and organized who them proclaim to ‘be’ OCD. but I guess my questions are this:

1. is this a thing? is there some sort of Rose of Dawn of the clinically insane?

2. are such insecurities about one’s diagnosis really a general thing? I don’t mean at the very beginning, but generally?

I feel like my point is somehow trivial (like, ‘duh, of course it’s a thing!’), but it seems so different to Natalie’s trans example: while trans people are motivated by making sure that people understand they’re ‘real’, i.e. not some sort of fad or confusion or mental disorder, the same can’t be said about people with mental health diagnoses, can it? like, yeah, of course it sucks when people think you alphabetizing your books is identical to having blood-crusted hands from washing them 66 times 6 times a day or whatever, but that’s only the external view: what does this look like to others? while that’s def also a thing for trans people, it seems silly in mental health spaces? like, how do you do ‘having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder/schizophrenia/depression/whatever’ wrong? there can’t be any pressure applied within groups to adhere to the truscum-equivalent of psychotic disorders? can there?

I hope I’m making sense. also: when I write ‘them’ about trans people, I do mean me. so all of this is written aS a tRaNs wOMaN

Dialogic videos

In Natalie's interview with Riley Grace, when asked about if she plans to do more dialogic videos Natalie says she is more into an essayistic format at the moment and that she feels like she lost some of the role models she had for these more dialogic videos. Anyone knows who she might be referring to? I think that format is really interesting and want to watch more videos of that kind. I have seen Innuendo Studio's Alt Right Playbook in which they sometimes take a dialogic approach when representing different political views but they have a mainly essayistic approach to the series in my view

Download video on patreon?

Hi friends, does anyone know if there is a download option on the Patreon? I'd love to be able to watch ContraPoints when I'm traveling without having to stream. I know YouTube Premium has an option to download videos, but I would prefer to give Natalie my money if possible.

Thanks!

Tangent, The Goddess Bunny

I really appreciate Natalie going through the story of The Goddess Bunny. I had seen the edited video a few years ago, with no context, and was terrified - the reaction most fifteen year olds probably have.

Now I'm nearly twenty and my reaction was pretty much the same. I had forgotten the video and had the same visceral terror. I don't know why exactly but I suppose the abrupt cut from the already creepy face, combined with the music is rather powerful framing. Natalie discussing the story of the woman in the video and showing footage of her in an interview context was rather a big revelation. It undid the dehumanization that the edited video leads the viewer to unintentionally engage in. That being said, I'm rather ashamed to say that I still can't watch the edited vid - that feeling of terror remains. Which goes to show how powerful a nefarious music choice can be.

It was a strong lesson in empathy for me and makes me think of all the people who have seen that video without ever knowing who that woman is and all she achieved in her life.

If anyone hasn't heard - The Tangents are on another level

I recently subscribed to the Patreon to check out what the hype was for these tangents Natalie has been doing.

Holyshit. This is like when your favorite band drops an album and it is all bangers. I marathoned all of them in a night and they're incredible and informative and unique. The Liminal Spaces one especially goes in so much different directions and ties them all together amazingly.

I'm just an idiot on the internet, but I feel like the essays on the main channel have changed direction slightly since Cringe. Not to say they're less enjoyable (the avg view count is higher post-Cringe than pre-Cringe), but they seem to be more reflective/educational than listening to Natalie freestyling philosophy. The tangents are back to freestyling philosophy and no one else freestyle like this.

TLDR - If you, like me, thought that the last video on the main Contrapoints channel that you were truly awestruck by was "Cringe" or "JK Rowling".... you really need to go check out the Tangents.

Feelings of monstrosity

Natalie briefly mentions struggling with feelings of monstrosity in the new tangent. I am cis but can relate for other reasons (sexual orientation, body issues, family of origin). Wondering what you think about it? Can you relate? How widespread of a feeling is it in this sub?

a common criticism

I have seen at least a few videos that have argued that speculating about JK Rowling’s trauma when trying to understand and combat her bigotry is gross or disrespectful and i would usually agree, but seems so weird to me in this case because JKR herself published an essay in which she claimed that her reasons for caring about “gender issues” include her trauma. if she herself makes this claim, using her trauma to bolster her anti-trans argument, it seems fair to address it. idk it seems like people were referring to natalies video specifically and it doesnt seem right to me. i am curious what other people think about this.

When someone is attracted to the way a person identifies

In "Are Traps Gay?" Mother said that people are not attracted to the way a person identifies. While this is mostly true, I think there are some situations where a person's identified gender definitely does influence whether people find them attractive.

In high school I knew a trans guy who was out, but didn't socially transition until uni - so he looked and dressed feminine, used female name and pronouns etc. All that really changed was the way he identified. But a lot of the straight guys he was seeing at the time stopped seeing him, not because of the way he looked or acted but simply because he identified as trans.

I think this is because self-image impacts attractiveness regardless of gender. For example Mother has said something like this along the lines of "Nothing is less attractive than a self-pitying person."

However, I can't figure out why. What exactly is it about self-image that impacts someone's attractiveness?
