Billy thinner bookcase has LESS of a weight capacity?
So I'm looking to get some cheap bookcases for my rather heavy book collection (I have mostly hardbacks like art books and reference books). I saw that the longer Billy bookcase (the 30" wide one) has a load capacity of 66 pounds but I've measured the weight of my shelves and they can be around 80 pounds. I thought about going through the hassle of cutting wood for center supports or to buy metal u-shaped braces and then go to a hardware store to cut them to size and then affix them to the shelves to prevent sagging but then I figured why not just get two thinner ones that are half the width?
Alas, I just checked the specs of the 15" ones and the load capacity max is...31 pounds (see attached pic)?! Doesn't that break the laws of physics or something? I always though load was better distributed across shorter distances. Are they using cheaper materials for the thinner cases or something? I mean, I know they just divided the load capacity of the 30" one in two because the shelves are half the length, but I think in practice the shorter shelves could hold a lot more. I measured 14" of my heaviest books and it was 49 pounds!
Does anybody have experience with the thinner bookcases holding up (literally!) better? Especially with newer Billys as I've heard the materials have gotten cheaper over time.
I guess if all else fails and I want the cheapest and easiest solution I could just buy extra 15" wide shelves to stack onto the existing ones so they'd be super thick (and half the length of the 30" ones!) so they should be VERY sturdy then.

Open closet idea help
So I’m building a sorta open closet on one bedroom wall. My thought is to have some shelving unit on one side (ideally from IKEA) with a clothing rod running from said shelving unit to the wall. How and what should I use? I want it to be as sturdy as possible as I have a lot of things to hang.

Fjällbo desk: shelf backing, dust cover, vibration damping ideas?
Hello, all! This is fairly light as far as hacks go, but hopefully still within scope of this subreddit.
I just bought a Fjällbo desk, and while I'm mostly happy with it, it has a few problems that I'm trying to solve to suit my needs. Would y'all have any ideas or thoughts?
I'd like to line the walls and floor of the shelf section, to avoid dust accumulation (while still letting the nice steel pattern be visible).
What materials could I use that are easily available, will look nice/not cheap, be easy to clean, and last long / not get damaged from regular use of the shelves?
I've considered foamcore boards, but I'm afraid the surface will get damaged with regular use of the shelves if I install them on the inside, and that they could pick up marks and be hard to clean (paper surface).
I've also looked at craft foam and ≈4 to 10mm EVA foam. Unsure how easy they'd be to make nice flat panels out of and keep clean. Craft foam colours can be a bit garish, but maybe just plain white or black. Hard to find big enough pieces/rolls on Amazon to avoid visible seams, might need to poke my head into art/craft stores next.
Maybe fine mesh like you find in some PC case dust covers? Also hard to find big enough pieces/rolls to avoid seams, and kind of expensive.
I'm thinking of using magnetic tape for ease of installation/removal, since the desk frame is all steel.
Also looking for a solution for a back panel (the shelves have a fully open back).
The desk is loud thanks to the steel frame—any little knocks on the desk surface reverberate. Any thoughts on how to dampen it? I don't expect to be able to dampen it completely given the hollow steel pieces, but if I can reduce some of it I'd be happy.
I'm a crafter and not averse to DIYing things, but I don't have a full workshop to do substantial woodworking. (If I did, I'd probably just cut and stain/finish some nice birch plywood or something as lining panels... still not out of the question if I can recruit a friend to help, but putting feelers out here for easier solutions that might still meet my needs.)

Add arms/armrests to a Lycksele
I’ve had a Lycksele for 7 years and find it still comfortable and easy to use as an occasional bed. However, it is my main sofa for my living room, and I find the lack of arms/armrests on it to be uncomfortable, as I like to lie down on it and there’s no support to lean a pillow against. Right now I have it pushed against a wall to use that as support while lying down, but I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas/tips to add some sort of arms or armrests or something to have instead.

# I would like to get the SKRUVBY sideboard, but would like to have the glass doors from the SKRUVBY Cabinet with glass doors. IKEA hack for an enclosed corner cabinet (22" x 22", ~36" tall) — possible?
Hi r/IKEAHAcks — I’m trying to solve a small-apartment storage problem and I’m hoping someone here has done something similar.
I’m looking for an enclosed corner cabinet to fit into a tight corner. Ideally each wall-facing “arm” would be about 22 inches, and the cabinet would be around 36 inches tall, with one interior shelf (nothing fancy). I’ve looked at bespoke/built-in options, but they’re out of my budget, so I’m wondering whether an IKEA hack could get me close.
Has anyone hacked an IKEA piece (or combined parts) to make a small triangle footprint cabinet with doors? If it’s possible, what are the big considerations I should be thinking about — things like door swing/hinges in a corner, stability, how to finish exposed sides, or any pitfalls with cutting down cabinets to size?

Vinyl floor mat as desk surface?
This isn't really specific to hacking Ikea, but I hope it's enough in the spirit of the sub to pass. Plenty of Ikea items have a tendency to grow bulges if the surface is scratched, so this is a potential solution to that as well.
I have been thinking about using vinyl floor mat to cover my work desk. By mat, I mean the sort that is sold by the metre and cut into size, NOT the planks. (See this image: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fDUD36VPD\_U/maxresdefault.jpg )
Has anyone ever done this? Am I crazy for even thinking about it? My main concern is of course finishing the edges neatly. I don't know if I can wrap the mat around my desk top nicely. Floor mat seams can be sort of welded with a special tool, but I don't know if that would be suitable for a desk, and also I'm not sure I could justify the expense when I'm not renovating a whole floor.
