Ps1 games that impressed you technically
What kind of Ps1 games impressed you technically back then, one of the games was Metal Gear especially the fight against psycho mantis with the memory card switches to defeat mantis
The second game is Soul Reaver the switching between the worlds and the fact that there are no loading screens during the game was groundbreaking for me

Digimon World 3 might be the worst RPG I’ve ever finished.
The leveling/ digivolve mechanics are pretty okay but what the FUCK was wrong with the direction of this game? They so rarely tell you what to actually do or where to go. The backtracking is the worst I’ve seen in any video game and I speedrun resident evil games for fun. And the encounter rate? Oh my god. And don’t get me started on how slow the game in general is.
How did any human being without a strategy guide beat this game back in the day? At least without spending dozens of hours wandering aimlessly trying to find the one dude to talk to to progress the plot. What a dumpster fire of a game. I finished this cause I loved the game as a kid despite never getting very far in it and I fully see why now. Child me would’ve never even probably gotten the first badge.

What games really pushed the ps1 hardware graphically?
What are the best looking games on the ps1?? I just recently played final fantasy 8 for the first time and damn it looks pretty good in 2025!
What other titles have you played on the ps1 that hold up pretty well in terms of graphics??

Tutorial: How to play PAL PS1 games on NTSC PS1 with Xstation.
So I spent the better part of a weekend, and a bunch of trial and error, trying to figure out how to get PAL PS1 games running on my NTSC PlayStation w/ XStation, on an NTSC CRT. I learned a lot, so I figured I'd give a rundown of what works and what doesn't.
\[If you're here then you've already figured out that trying to play PAL games on an NTSC PS1 (without any Frequency Oscillation mods) can result in such issues as black and white picture and/or vertically scrolling, or garbled images.\]
My Setup is a 550X Series NTSC PS1 with Xstation, on an NTSC CRT (Panasonic TAU CT-32SL15N). Since the CRT accepts 480i through Component. The cables I use are HD Retrovision (Sega Genesis Model 2 cable w/ PS1 adapter). I'll also being going over standard Composite cables and a RAD2X setup.
The issues:
\- With the HD Retrovision cables I was getting color via component input but the gameplay resulted in the screen image vertically scrolling.
\- With standard Composite (RCA) cables the game would display as black and white, and I believe there was also vertical scrolling, but I'm not recalling fully.
\- With RAD2X I had no issues playing PAL content, so if this is your setup you're good to go. Granted your mileage may vary depending on what screen you're using. Though, my flat panel TCL was able to accept 480p 60hz from the RAD2X, and once the PAL game booted the resolution would switch to 576p 50hz with no problems.
The workaround:
For both Component, or Composite, the solution was the same. I had to use a boot disc called "ImportPlayer Light". The main issue was trying to get a boot disc to work on a PS1 that no longer accepts discs. And, there's a lot I'm not going to go over because most of my trial and error was messing around with filetypes I didn't need to mess with. Ultimately, you just need to find a .BIN/.CUE version of "ImportPlayer Light" (or make your own .BIN/.CUE version from an .ISO)
Once you have those files, drop them in a folder, and copy it over to the same location as your games on the SD Card. Now, back at your PlayStation, there's an order of operations that no one told me about and I had to play around a lot until I figured it out, it's not complicated but I never used a boot disc before.
1.) Press TRIANGLE to go into your options and "Refresh Game List" so you can see your newly added software.
2.) Hover over your "ImportPlayer Light" folder and press SQUARE to "Start Playlist". (you'll see a number "1" to the left informing of the queue order.)
3.) Next, hover over the folder of the PAL game you want to play and press SQUARE again, to "Add to Playlist". (you should a "2" for this entry.)
4.) Press X (or Cross :P) to enter the Queue Options menu, and select "FastBoot" or "FullBoot" to start your game. (doesn't matter which)
If it worked correctly you'll see that the PlayStation loaded you into the "ImportPlayer Light" software. Just verify that the Video Mode is set to "NTSC" and select "Start Game".
The next screen that pops up will have a message that says "Insert Game CD, and press any button to boot." but DON'T PRESS ANYTHING... yet. (you won't break anything if you do, but the process won't work, and you'll have to power down your PS1 and restart again from Step 2.) \-- What you need to do first (before pressing any button) is press the "Open" lid button on the PS1, like you're going to physically swap out a disc (but you're obviously not), then close the lid back down and NOW press any button.
This should now boot up your PAL game forced in 60hz mode. You may have some screen positioning issues since PAL has more lines in the vertical (576) than NTSC does (480). Some games let you readjust the screen position within the options menu.. but not all do. I haven't tested that many yet. But the ones I did test worked well enough, with enough of a viewable screen for me to enjoy them.
Anywho, that's it!! Hope this helped anyone that wanted to enjoy PAL games on their NTSC
PS1 PU-8 XStation & Recap questions
I have two questions regarding the repair of a PS1 I own. I bought a SCPH-1001 recently from a flea market and modded it with an MM3 Modchip just to find out the laser was worn out. After installing 2 440BAMs with new lube, cleaning, and pot tweaks, I've got no luck.
I have decided to go the XStation route as I have a compatible PU-8 board (1-658-467-23).
My questions are:
1. Where can I find a well-priced, compatible XStation? I want the best price for a kit that emphasis easy installation rather than all the bells and whistles.
2. Where can I buy a set of new capacitors for my board? I know that there are dozens of different PSX boards, and I don't want to buy the wrong set on accident.
PS, if anyone wants my MM3 chip, DM me and I'll ship it out to you for a few bucks, I'd rather it be in someone else's hands who needs it.

Since we’re approaching the mid-year mark, I thought I’d post up micro-reviews of all the PS1 era games that I’ve played this year… so far!
- Bushido Blade - 9/10 repeatable body damage fun
- Parasite Eve - 8/10 that last boss sours a little
- Koudelka - 9/10 amazing atmosphere and quick JRPG. Voice acting and stage-play cutscenes are wicked good
- Xenogears - 8/10 disc two wasn’t as bad as people say but was tough. Legit tough final boss as well.
- Chocobo Racing - 7/10 easy, stupid fun. Unlock more chars soon. Gotta tap X to drift
- Ridge Racer Type 4 - 10/10 so fucking good. Arcade racing that you know you love
- Panzer Dragoon - 7/10 Great on rail shooter. Easier than most
- Panzer Dragoon 2 - 9/10 So fucking slick and inventive. It’s the most cinematic action game that I’ve played from this generation
- Panzer Dragoon Saga - 9/10 Disc 4 had a frustrating quest but overall beautiful game and amazing story. But the real enjoyment comes from its world building.
- Rugrats: The Search for Reptar - 6/10 good nostalgia, okay mini games.
- Digimon World - 10/10 still the nostalgic gem I remember, frustrating Numamon evolutions and all. This is the game I think about when I think of the PS1 and I see why.

Does anyone else here feel good giving games away to people who actually play them?
I’m not talking about selling these games, but rather giving them to a friend or coworker or acquaintance or family member who you know will actually play the games.
I bring this up because last month I gave a friend my extra copy of Xenogears because I knew they’d play it and keep it. I had no use for a second copy (as of now, at least). And they’ve been loving it, sending me screenshots and talking about the game.
Just makes me feel good being able to pay a game forward instead of letting it collect dust. Though, don’t get me wrong, I do let quite a few games sit unplayed for awhile. I love collecting but I’m glad someone else can enjoy something that I was likely not going to use.
Anyone else here do the same?

Ps1 doesn‘t load saved game
I got my old ps1 out and started playing tomb raider 4 (last revelation) and got to 3 hours ingame playtime. (I think the current level is temple of Seth? It had the first car chase)
Everything worked fine so far. Then I died and my last save refused to load. I reset it a lot but always stuck at 90% loadingscreen.
The disc is not scratched or dirty. I can start a new game no problem. Turning the ps1 upside down did not help load it. The other save points all stopped working too.
I copied the saved points for this game to my other memory card and then it let me load my last saved point again. (I could finally proceed playing)
Then I died some time later and the problem started again. I don’t believe that both my memory cards are broken.
So I deleted my saved games from the memory card (maybe they just got messed up somehow) started a new game and used the level skip cheat to get back to where I was.
The level still won’t load if I cheat my way there. It gets stuck at 90% loading screen.
So does this mean my copy of this game is just broken and won’t let me progress further than 50% of the game or could it be the ps1s fault? Cause the disc isn’t scratched or dirty at all and I don’t want to buy a new disc without being sure.

Will a dual frequency oscillator help an NTSC PS1?
I have a 5500 series NTSC PS1 modded with an Xstation. It's connected to my CRT with HD Retrovision cables (genesis model 2 w/ PS1 adapter)
Everything works just fine when I play NTSC games. But when I try to play PAL games the TV displays vertical scrolling. I was reading about the dual frequency oscillators but all the info out there makes it sound like the PAL games will still run at 50hz. Wouldn't this still be problematic for a CRT? Or does the dual frequency oscillator allow the PAL games to play in 60hz?
Has anyone tried adding a dual frequency modulator to an NTSC PS1? I'd be willing to do the mod but I don't want to waste the money or time if it doesn't work.
