What to read during 4 hours of uninterrupted chill time
After being on the non stop go for 5 months, I have 4 hours of uninterrupted chill time tomorrow afternoon and all I want to do is fill that time with a cup of tea and a good book.
Could you please suggest a book that I can make a decent dent in and is not too complex that I can pick it up again when things get hectic?
I enjoy historical fiction, romance, fantasy, thriller, suspense... Authors I've enjoyed are Katie Quinn and Taylor Jenkins Reid. Examples of books I couldn't put down are Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, Tender Is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica, The Martian by Andy Weir, The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary, and The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang.
Thanks for the help!

A "chosen one" that is not special
I've been rereading the Vorkosigan saga by Lois McMaster Bujold and one character I'm really fascinated by is Gregor. He is the emperor of a planetary system through inheritance and even though he doesn't want the job but there's no clear alternative enough people can agree upon so he's stuck with it.
I'm really fascinated with this concept of someone having this kind of responsibility foisted upon them without any kind of magical or practical reassurance that they will be able to do it well but also no real choice not to do it.
Do you know of other books with this kind of story line? A plus if it's something else than a inherited rule. The ones I can think of is The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison or Fool's errand by Robin Hobb which are both also about kings/emperors.

Best war novels/memoirs?
I know I'm probably a little morbid, but I'm really looking for some to sink my teeth into. Not extremely partial to any particular setting, I'll take WW1, WW2, Napoleonic Wars, Yugoslav Wars, pretty much anything. From the point of view of a civilian, a soldier, just about anyone else too.
I've generally got a pretty strong stomach for gory or dark content. What I'm really looking for is good research and compelling historical details. Honestly, I'd take narrative nonfiction too, but not really looking for something that is just dry facts.
Books in this genre I've really enjoyed lately include City of Thieves by David Benioff and Between Before and After by Edita Mujkic.

A book about the history of cancer
My grandfather died of cancer. I'm a avid reading and, while dealing with this lost I thought about reading s book about cancer.
I'm not necessarily looking for a book ehrte a character has cancer or something like it. I'm actually looking for a book that talks about the history of cancer. Not in a oncology-med-studant-text-book-sort-of-way, more like a biography of sorts.
How it was discovered. How the treatment wore developed etc.
I know that my request it's kind of weird. Such a book even exists? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Unique historical fiction?
I feel like there are three main categories of historical fiction that I always come across: medieval setting, WWII, beginning of the United States, or the Gold Rush. Would prefer that the book is not war related.
I would love something really unique. For example, I’ve been going through Michener’s work and am excited about his book Space. Please don’t recommend Michener because I’m already reading his work.
Can anyone recommend truly worthwhile historical fiction that are unique in both setting and whatever point in history they’re covering? I’m not looking for a long family saga, just an interesting event/unique point in history.
I’m also not the best with books that are over 400 pages. If it’s that long, unless I absolutely love the author, I’m not very likely to read it.
I’m aware of Shogun but am not sure about this one due to SA’s in the book. Likewise, tried Pachinko, but too many SA’s.
P.S. I’ve read Amor Towles
A unique one I’m thinking of covers the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami in Japan called The Phone Booth at the Edge of the World by Laura Messina. It’s probably more literary fiction and I really liked that it covered a different part of history that you don’t often hear about.

Best books about 17th-18th century voyages similar to The Wager by David Grann?
I just finished The Wager and was completely captivated by the storytelling of the adventures of life at sea and the harsh conditions the crew members endured.
What are your favorite books about sea voyages that you would recommend?

A book that made you hold your heart in your hand
Umm yeah technically something like that only.
I have been reading a lot of contemporary and smutty books (and smiling like a maniac) but somehow they all feel very short lived with a super predictable plot (i know this but I still read them like a crazy person).
But I really really want to read some classic romance novels (please spare jane austen, Charlotte Bronte). I want to read something different from the main stream but still based on human love only (no vampires, half humans or sci-fi) - just love. Something that goes in deep, maybe something written by men (i want to read their pov as well) and something that takes you on a cinematic journey (generally and exactly how classic literature does - pure ecstasy).
Give me your best classic romance novel.

Recommendations to get back into reading
So I’m an avid reader, and I worked in bookstores almost all my adult life. I would read a book a week sometimes. But about 2.5 years ago I got into a bad car accident which gave me a concussion amongst other things. I couldn’t hold a book or even keep my head up to read. But I miss it terribly and am wondering what you’d recommend to get me back to reading. I’m mostly a mystery fan (not gory or scary stuff). I also love books with historical themes. A few of my favourites are The Nightingale, Lessons in Chemistry, Gone Girl and Magpie Murders. Thank you in advance!

Looking for a new crime/spy series to read
I am currently on paternity leave and just finished the last book in Slow Horses by Mick Herron and I am looking for my next book series to read. Before Slow Horses I also am caught up on the Bosch books, so I am looking for a book series similar to either of those two to fill my reading time!

Books that capture the history of a thing (e.g., commodity, food). Something like “the cigarette - a political history”
Am looking for books which write about a single topic, like the story of McDonald’s. It doesn’t have to be political! but more detailed than trivia.

a book you think is frustratingly underrated
Hey everyone…So I’m back again asking for book recs! I actually made a little page where I’m keeping track of every book that’s been recommended to me that caught my eye…Kind of like my personal to-read list. I plan to work through them eventually, but I’d love to keep adding more, so if you have any suggestions, send them my way. I made the site public too, so anyone can take a look. I’ll drop the link below.

Looking for a book on how to accept an average life
I’ve come to the realization that I’m a mediocre average person and will lead an unremarkable life of unmet potential. I’m looking for a book that can help me come to terms with this. Googling has mostly turned up advice that tries to be inspiring and gives tips on how to start excelling and becoming better than average. But that’s not what I’m looking for (I’m too old for that lol). Any recommendations welcome, thank you!

Suggest me a book that has the same energy as The Emperor’s New Groove
Yes, the Disney movie. It’s my turn to pick the next book in my book club and I’m currently watching The Emperor’s New Groove, and feeling inspired.
What book has the same energy as this work of art!? I’m thinking seemingly high stakes plot with fantasy/magical realism elements and almost cozy vibes and lots of humor.

Need an "edge of my seat" book... thriller/suspense/horror...paranormal or crime. Totally new to the genre.
Within the past year, I really got into reading, and I read a lot of fantasy romance. But I got pregnant and reading became very difficult for me, since i have some attention difficulties and can't take my medication.
But I'm trying to get back into it, and so I'm looking for a thriller/suspense/creepy/"nail biter". I don't mind horror...i actually enjoy horror. I especially enjoy paranormal horror, if I had to choose. And I like crime thrillers. I like "something really creepy/mysterious is going on here (in this house, with this person, etc.) and we need to figure it out quickly" whether it's realistic or paranormal...don't care. I'm totally new to this book genre. But I love movies like that. I did start Lights Out a few months ago, but haven't finished it.
But i really want an "on the edge of my seat" type of book.....since it's more difficult to concentrate when I'm pregnant. Preferably under 500 pages.
Thank you

Books about people who love their children

Books with married couples in healthy, equal and loving relationships
I’ve been reading a lot of books with female leads that are burdened by the domesticity that comes with marriage and kids (eg. Most elena ferrante books) I’d really appreciate suggestions of books that show that marriage and a family can actually be pleasant for women with the right partner
Edit: the relationship doesn’t have to be the main story in the book
