Let’s play a real game of "Suggest Me a Book" to open up new doors to reading recommendations!
I’ll start by sharing a sentence or two about my current mood, thoughts, or life situation. The first person to comment need to recommend a book based on that. Also, the first one needs share his/her own mood, thoughts, or life situation, and the next person will recommend a book for him/her. And so on.
Let’s build a chain of personalized book recommendations together!
Let me start:
Lately, it's been raining nonstop. The gray skies make me feel drowsy, and my mood has taken on the same heaviness. I've been feeling sentimental, thinking back to days that held special meaning.

Recs for my boyfriend (30M) who only ever read Harry Potter
I’m encouraging my bf 30M to get into reading fiction. He only ever read Harry Potter and Of Mice and Men and really liked both and then stopped reading. He doesn’t really know what he’s into but I’m thinking fantasy might be a good place to start - something fast/medium paced and not overwhelming to grab his attention. I don’t really read much fantasy so I don’t have any recommendations myself
edit: doesnt need to be strictly fantasy

Suggest me a book that refers to returning to oneself - concept from Marcus Aurelius
Hello everyone! I am reading at the moment Meditations - Marcus Aurelius. I find it interesting how he talks about returning to oneself. I am curious if there are other books speaking about this so I get to have a more comprehensive view. Could be a biography/motivational book/stories etc. I am just curios in reading more about this concept.
Thanks in advance!

I read underground man from dostoevsky.
Now i have not read many books in my life. To be honest i have not read any novels in my life other than some self help books like 48 laws of power and one more whose name i do not remember. Now while reading the book, the first half started easy but as i kept reading it became more and more complicated, somethings i understand other i did not.
But when the second half started the book became 200% more enjoyable and easy to understand. Little after little i understand that the underground man is pathetic and pitiable man even though it does not deserve any pity.
Now after reading i still do not get the satisfaction of reading the book because many things from the first half i did not understand.
Please suggest some books that i can read as a new reader.
Also for anyone who is thinking why i read underground man as a new reader. A friend suggested it as it is small and something that i may found relatable.

I need to read a book to get me out of a slump
For some context, I've been an on and off reader for all my life. I despise chessy romances (if someone can change my mind, go ahead), and I really don't have a genre I prefer. I want to read more, really build myself intellectually (become a better writer myself, read and analyze better, etc) while having fun, so I'm open to non-fiction too. My favorite books were from when I was very young, so Love does by Bob Goff, The bridge of Clay, the emperor of anyplace, and even just mercy by Byan Stevenson. I prefer non-spicy books (not trying to get second-hand-embarssment). Also, not a huge fan of poetry, barely can understand it, so thanks for any recommendations y'all can give.

“Nonfiction style” novels
Hello! I’m looking for books like World War Z by Max Brooks, the revolutions podcasts by Mike Duncan, or Bubblegum by Adam Levin. A book written like its target audience exists in the same world as the novel.
Edit: Looking for books that do not take place in our world, and are not written in the traditional novel style but instead like a historical nonfiction book or memoir.

Looking for books with the same vibe as Sinners by Ryan Coogler
I have been gushing about Sinners to everyone who will listen, ever since I watched it last week. It immediately went on my favourites list and I was in complete awe of how alive and textured the film felt. It felt like a living breathing thing. I'd love to read a book (or five) in that same vein.
While watching it, I was reminded of P. Djèlí Clark's writing. I absolutely adore his books, so I guess something similar would be great. Dark but not necessarily horror, I don't mind heavy subtext, I do like recontextualised history like Clark does. I loved the sense of community in Sinners. While I'm not necessarily looking for works of fiction by Black writers, I am looking for fiction that draws on folklore/mythology and weaves that into historical contexts. I imagine there is indigenous fiction out there that would also fit the bill. I would like the setting to be in North America.
I'm basically looking for Ring Shout but not Ring Shout, if you get me. I have also read and loved The Deep by Rivers Solomon which does something similar. If any of their other works fits the description above, let me know.
(Please, for the love of god, do NOT recommend Lovecraft to me. Thanks.)
GO WATCH SINNERS! It's fantastic.

Book that feels like fantasy but is actually completely mundane.
Hopefully this makes sense. Looking for a story or book that is written in the style and structure of a fantasy novel. but it's set in modern day with no magic or sci-fi stuff at all. Flowery prose that makes everything feel larger than life, even though the characters are actually doing pretty normal things. Something that elevates the mundane to heroic proportions.
sorry if I'm confusing.

Books that are written beautifully
I just finished reading Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates and I was blown away by his writing. It felt like poetry. Circe by Madelline Miller was another book that made me feel this way. I would love recommendations for more books like this, any genre works!

Contemporary novels about being single as a woman in your 30s/40s
Being single in my 30s I often feel lost because I always hoped I'd have a relationship and kids by now. Do you know any books on being single as a woman in that age range? Dealing with expectations towards life, how they change as things develop etc?
As an example, I really like Dolly Aldertons books because they usually center single people in their 30s.

Book recommendations for a 12 year old girl. Fantasy and non fiction especially.
My daughter is about to turn 12 and loves books. She's into fantasy (Keeper of the lost cities, Twilight, LOTR were recent reads) and non fiction (history, math, science). Looking for book ideas to get her for her birthday. Bonus points for strong female characters.

Read Alouds for 10 year old boy and 30 year old man
Since birth I have read to my son almost every night. He loves stories of all kinds and as we’ve moved into chapter books over the last few years we’ve been going through a book every 2-3 weeks. My personal book shelf is starting to run dry and I’m looking for recommendations to add to my list for the future.
Currently we are reading Series of Unfortunate Events which seems to be an all time favorite. Our next read will likely be Chronicles of Narnia. He’s reading Percy Jackson on his own.
Other books he’s enjoyed have been:
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, Tales from the Odyssey by Mary Pope Osbourne, anything by Andrew Clements or Roald Dahl, The Borrowers, Grimm’s fairy tales.
Although he likes a little of everything, he’s fascinated by classic stories and myths-he’s been begging to read the full Iliad and Odyssey but I’m worried they might not live up to his expectations/be too hard to grasp.
Please suggest books for ten year old boys. Bonus if they have a classical or mythological flare. Extra bonus if they would also appeal to a 30 year old man as 9 times out of ten my husband snuggles into our reading pile too. TIA!

Book that got you out of creative slump?
So I’m in the middle of creating my art portfolio and the tight schedule and deadlines I set for myself got me into this creative burn out. ☠️ Thought I’d rest for a few days to recover and watch or read a book.
Do you have any books that got you out of creative slump or burn out? Can be fiction novels, poetry etc. not necessarily about creativity itself
Thanks!

Books like 100 Years of Solitude and East of Eden
My two favorite books of all time are 100 Years of Solitude and East of Eden. I love stories that follow families over generations. I also really enjoyed the lush imagery of both Colombia and the Salinas Valley in these two books. What else would I love?

I need a book that will grip me
I am in a book slump and I need help. I love adventure and angsty romances and honestly I just want to get consumed by a book. I've read Maas and Yarros and Aster. I also just lost my Kindle Unlimited as an FYI. Any long series or angsty romances? Fated mates or forbidden romances? I am so desperate to find something that moves me, please help.

Suggest me the book with the best dialogue and the best characters you have ever read. (either or both)
I am taking a creative writing class next semester - we are allowed to skip the final if we've written a fiction book (novella, really - 150 pages). So, I tried to write one. As you may have guessed, it was horrific. A regular abomination. I will, of course, settle for writing a shitty book if necessary - that'll probably happen anyways - but I would prefer to write something that's not terrible. In light of this I am hoping to learn from the masters. My (future) professor said my biggest problems were in writing dialogue and characters, so that's where I plan to start.
Thanks in advance!

Non-fiction book recommendations that read like a great investigative piece
I love basically all of Patrick Radden Keefe's books, John Carreyrou's Bad Blood, Dopesick by Beth Macy, and Evicted by Matthew Desmond.
Basically non-fiction books that feel like you're reading an expose into some societal or historical issue with amazing writing.

If you could erase the memory of one book just to experience it again for the first time, which would it be?
I know it’s a tough one, because I personally couldn't answer, but if you have an answer on the top of your head, please share 🥰
I’m looking for books that take me somewhere unexpected. Stories that stay with you, shift something inside. So tell me, what’s one book you’d forget, just to feel it all again for the first time?

Books for someone who likes David Mitchell's work...
As the title implies, I've been working my way through David Mitchell's works and I'm curious about what else similar is out there. In case it helps:
I've read four David Mitchell works so far (Ghostwritten, n9d, Cloud Atlas and Black Swan Green) - Number9dream is my favourite but they've all been excellent
I think what I particularly like about the Mitchellverse novels is the authenticity and believability of the various character voices, the prose, the humour* and how he balances his themes and his plot. I don't mind the mosaic novel / linked stories aspect, but it's nowhere near my favourite thing about these works and not what I'm thinking of when asking for recommendations
I generally like literary science fiction. Put another way, I often like literary books (i.e. where a book has themes and is about more than the plot/characters), and I often like speculative fiction, but I especially like books that tick both those boxes
Other favourite authors include China Mieville, Richard Russo, Simon Jimenez, Martin MacInnes and Dexter Palmer.
I've checked the earlier similar threads for ideas. I have read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (enjoyed it, but not as much as Mitchell), and On a Winter's Night a Traveller (didn't enjoy this - found it dull and confusing).
Any suggestions very much appreciated!
\ I laughed like crazy at the Neal Brose part of Ghostwritten. He's awful but it works.

Suggestions of books with simple yet deep lessons?
I'm fascinated with horror books, but I think it's time for a break.
I want something that will touch my soul in a different way. I love Le Petit Prince and the way it is presented. Anything similar? Something simple for a child yet deep for adults? Life lessons in the form of a story? Like an old man and a child sitting in the grass sharing they're experiences so far? Thanks!

Slice of Life, Family Dramas, Interpersonal Relationships?
I’m honestly not even sure if you could say these books are all that similar…but I am looking for more books that focus mostly on the characters more so than the plot itself. Im looking for more books like these:

-Blue Sisters
-Maame
-Adelaide
-Lessons in Chemistry
-Wellness
-The Nix
-Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow
-We are the Brennans
-Really Good, Actually
-The Half Moon
-Marrying the Ketchups
-Anxious People
Any suggestions? Thanks!

What next after Harry Potter to read aloud to almost 9 yr old ?
I just finished reading the Deathly Hallows to my almost 9 year old son. I think it took like 10 or so months to read them all with him since he loves being read to. I was thinking maybe the Lord of the Rings? I’ve never read them. He already listened to the entire Chronicles of Narnia on his Yoto Player. And we have read or listed most of the Roald Dahl books.
