Suggest me some books to get me out of my 5 year reading slump

I have been on a reading slump for about 5 years, I’m not sure how to get out of it. Started when I was beginning highschool, then covid came around that same year and you would think with all that free time I would have broken it, I had tried but nothing really worked. now in college, and still trying to get out of it, the furthest I have made it is about 1/3 into a book which took me a month to achieve (book in question was rise of kings by Brandon Sanderson). I enjoyed every bit I read but for the life of me I could not finish it. It’s been about a year since I last tried, so with that said, my favorite genres are Fantasy and romance.but not picky and willing to try anything.

Tldr; need some suggestions to get me out of my slump my favorite genres are fantasy and romance. But am not picky and willing to try anything.

Mystery Book Where You Are Forced To Solve The Mystery

So, I have an obsession with ergodic novels. They fascinate me.
And I discovered a novel entitled Cain's Jawbone.

It is a 100 page mystery novel with multiple murderers and victims. What makes it so unique, is that there is no conclusion. You are supposed to solve the mystery. The 100 pages are out of order, and you have to put them in the correct sequence to figure out who the murderers are. As of this date, only 4 people have ever officially solved the book.

I'm curious if there's anything else at least sort of like this., where you have to solve the mystery.

I'm In A Bookstore RIGHT NOW!

Edit 2: I found my two picks. Thank you everybody for your suggestions. These may be the two I picked, but quite a few others made my list.

Butter by Asuko Yuzuki

A Furious Sky by Eric Jay Dolin

I feel like I wouldn't have come across these on my own or if I had asked somebody who knows me which is why I turned to Reddit. Thanks for indulging me!

Edit: Apparently, I posted this in the wrong thread. I think Reddit is too damn big for someone like me to keep track.

I should have mentioned in the last one, I don't read comics (that includes manga).

So, let's try this again.

This is it, Reddit. The moment if truth. I'm in a bookstores right now.

Recommend me a book to buy/read. I'm open to most genres other than romance, erotica, or that LitRPG stuff. I'm looking for fiction, but let's be as spontaneous as this post is being. Feel free to recommend fiction AND non-fiction. I'll buy one if each.

When it comes to non-fiction, I'm partial to history, biographies, and philosophy. But if there is a topic you're passionate about, make your case and maybe that's the one I'll pick.

I'm gonna go get a coffee. I'll probably be Herr at least a couple of hours.

But I don't have have all day so hurry your butts (I'm being cheeky, if that's not obvious.)

I need new (for me) detective fiction series, please

I love the sense of place a good long series can provide. Great example for me is Upfield's Bony books, set in 30s-50s Australia. One of my favorites.

I've read a ton of them. Spenser, T. McGee, Archer, Robichaux, Elvis Cole, Ed BcBain's, Reacher, so so many. My mind goes blank. Just finished Bruno Chief of Police. Now I want to live in France.

If you kind folks would just start listing your faves, willy nilly. I'll paw through them for ones I haven't read. Thanking you!

Rare opportunity to binge read - what’s an unputdownable book that I can read in a weekend?

I get very few opportunities to binge a book these days but I have a few upcoming flights where I can read the whole time and I can’t wait.

Looking for an unputdownable book that I can finish in a weekend.

Some books that I couldn’t put down - The God of the Woods; Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow; The Heart’s Invisible Furies; the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo; The Goldfinch; Rules of Civility; Pillars of the Earth

Broadly looking for fiction with memorable characters but with a compelling plot not just character driven, but open to recs in any genre!! (Recently I loved The Cold Vanish which was nonfiction)

Thank you!!!

Fiction or non-Fiction book about the day to day life of an average person in WW2 Germany or Italy.

I want to read about someone who didn't enthusiastically embrace the fascist life, who just tried to get through it as best they could.

Give me a book with a good con or heist please :)

As a young adult I really enjoyed the heist society series and six of crows/crooked kingdom. I also enjoyed the tv series white collar and the mission impossible movies. Are there any adult books with similar vibes? I’m finding mostly murder mysteries and thrillers. I don’t really like scary/creepy. I just like the fun, “how did they pull that off!”, slow reveal sort of thing.

Thanks!

Do you know any novels that remind you of Studio Ghibli films?

What book will make you feel like you're in a Studio Ghibli film?

I'm reading Treblinka, which a user on this forum recommended to me, and before reading it, I read Voices from Chernobyl (also recommended here). Then I'll read War Has No Woman's Face and Hiroshima.

After so much human cruelty, I would like to read a book that is sentimental, but also invites reflection and makes you feel happy.

I think that, after reading this book, I would like to feel like I feel after watching a Studio Ghibli film: at peace, fulfilled, calm, nostalgic, and happy. (I don't rule out shedding a few tears, too)

Do you have any recommendations for a book like this?

Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading.

What are fast-paced books that got you out of a reading slump?

So I've been having a hard time getting back to reading because of, well, life.

Recently I've devoured the likes of Dark Matter and Sunrise on the Reaping, so I'm looking for similar fast-paced "can barely put it down" books to help me get back on my (reading) feet!

Thanks in advance 💛

Books with villainous women.

I'm a fan of a good villain, the kind of petty vindictive bastard that really makes you love to hate them. However, I've realised that my list of favourite villains is made up entirely of men.

Now I've only just got into proper novels, having spent most of my teenage years reading comics that tend to struggle with women as villains and none of them are really high up in my list. Not because their aren't any just that they don't tend to grip me as well as the male ones do.

So, I was hoping someone here could point me towards some quality villainesses.

Reference for villains: Dexter Morgan, the Reverse Flash, Dracula, Jack Torrance and Hannibal Lecture.

Reference for books: The Dexter series, Stephen King, Sherlock Holmes, the chronicles of Narnia (weird on this list I know but it's my favourite book from when I was a kid), and Lord of the rings.

Genre reference: Mystery, fantasy, modern fantasy, thrillers and horror.

Looking for a book with a kind, inspirational mai character

I’ve recently gotten in to reading fiction, mostly fantasy, and I’d lo e any suggestions of books where the main character (or at least one of them) is incredibly kind to others, deserving or not

I love these types of characters and always enjoy them in media, the best example i can think of is Ichiban Kasuga from the like a dragon games, one of my favourite characters in anything, kind and with a positive attitude no matter how much hardship is thrown at him, if you know of any fantasy books with similar characters in that sense please suggest away! Thank you

Books with a gay protagonist which is secondary to the story - if that makes sense?

Might sound a little odd but does anyone have any recommendations for books with a gay main character where them being gay isn’t really focus of the whole book?

I’ve tried a few but they usually seem to quickly fall into romance/ erotica.

Guess I’m just looking for a book where them being gay isn’t all they’re about, if that makes sense? Like a book with an interesting protagonist who just happens to be gay.

I don’t mind a little angst or romance as long as it’s not all it’s about. Fantasy, historic, and horror are my usual genres but I’ll read anything, so if anyone’s got any recommendations please feel free to share.

Update: What I read during my 4 hours of uninterrupted chill time

Hi fellow readers. Yesterday I asked what I should read during my 4 hours of uninterrupted chill time and I just wanted to thank you all for the wonderful suggestions.

The reading time ended up being 2 hours instead of 4, but it was such an incredible session. I ended up choosing the audiobook of Project Hail Mary and it is phenomenal. Honestly, I am not an audiobook person but the story is soooooo well told, it's like the book was made for the narrator or the narrator was made for the book... You get the picture.

As for the other suggestions, I thank you but my wallet will be weeping in the upcoming months. Can't wait to get stuck in. The session today reminded me of my love for reading and how much I have missed it. I'm going to make sure I prioritise reading going forward.

Historical fiction recommendations

I seem to really enjoy historical fiction lately. I recently read the radiant emperor duology and the mercies and really loved them both!
So I'm looking for more historical fiction books. I would love some suggestions that aren't super cheesy. I'm open to romance but I'd prefere if it wasn't the main plot point. I would also like to read from different times and cultures. Maybe something that hasn't been done thousands of times before.
I hope that all made sense and I'm looking forward to some good suggestions!

Suggest me a captivating autobiography where the author isn’t trying to prove a point.

I feel like so many autobiographies (especially of famous people) is of the narrator wanting to be heard or prove something, and then there are the occasional ones where people are raw and think their story may interest or help a reader. Please share! I.e Cheryl strayed, Ishmael beah, glass castle etc.

Enemies to lovers but they're both villains?

Hi!

I'm looking for an enemies to lovers where:

> They both really hate each other.

> They've both done messed up stuff. Morally grey or ambiguous/anti-hero is fine.

> No sexist tropes like good girl x bad boy, please. I want them to be one-uping each other in terms of wickedness.

> HEA is optional. I don't need it, but it's a good add-on.

> I usually read F/F and F/M, but M/M is welcomed too.

Thanks in advance!

Books for 8 year old who doesn't love reading??

My 8 year old isn't very fond of reading, when I do get him to read its typically comic type books or books with lot of pictures like the Dragon Masters series. I would like to get him into more age appropriate books with less pictures. I can certainly understand the appeal of graphics so maybe some sort of transition to a more boring non-picture type of book? Would love to hear suggestions on what to get him started with as I'd like to help him get into more serious books.

Probably pretty typical but he likes shooting, roblox, any technology like PC games/smartphones, fast cars, etc.

EDIT: Thank you for all the advice, it really resonated with me that he should be encouraged to read what he likes. So graphic books it is, I just picked up many of the suggestions on here for his Kindle. I did sneak in a couple of non-picture books, but I'm not even going to tell him and see if he discovers them on his own.
