Restricted book library.

Hi. I’ve been wanting to add a small “garden library” to my front yard since I have many people walking by every day. Space will be limited so I want to fill it with books that are important to LGBTQ+ members and books containing US history that are banned/restricted in schools/libraries. I’m especially interested in books that talk about racism, sexism, homophobia, and just awful things the US government wants to hide from public view. As well as self help type books and books that may help struggling kids/teens. I think these topics need to be available for everyone.
If you know of any books that really impacted you, that are at risk of becoming restricted to the public, please comment!

What to read after something exceptionally awful?

I just read something that gave me a headache, it was so obnoxious and terribly written. I need something fun and easy to read (preferably romance with comedic elements). Thank you!

Book to read on a cruise

Hi everyone!

I’m going on a weeklong cruise and need some recommendations on books to read while I’m relaxing around the ship. Not looking for anything overly serious or complicated. Just want something I can pick up whenever I feel like it. My tastes are all over the place and usually love any recommendations I get off of here. In case it’s important, I usually do audiobooks so something that’s better to read than the audiobook would be awesome.

Some of my favs are DCC, lonesome dove, 11/22/63, East of Eden, Remarkably Bright Creatures, house on the cerulean sea, and flowers for algernon.

Thanks!

Books with fae and beautiful worlds

The ACOTAR series is one of my favourite series because I love the world building. Whenever I see books mentioned as being like ACOTAR it's because of the spice, and I'm not that fussed about that. Like I dont think Fourth Wing is like ACOTAR at all but is always recommended as being similar. In ACOTARlove the ideas of the seasonal and solar courts and the descriptions of them, I wish there was more about the courts. I love the library and the sentient house, the descriptions of the clothes and jewellery, etc. Are there any books with beautiful world building that you can get lost in?

I know there are people who criticise the world building and thats fine. I love it and am looking for more!

What are some good female authored books for someone who mainly reads books written by men?

I've noticed that I've been almost exclusively reading books by dudes about dudes. I've been on a massive binge of just male authors who write very male orientated plot lines such as Cormac McCarthy, Larry McMurty, John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac etc.

I'm a guy myself and I love reading gritty and brutal books but I feel like I'm missing out on female authors.

Could someone please give some recommendations? Bonus points for female authors that write gritty and bleak books!

I have not loved many of the fiction books I've read lately, suggest me a page turner?

Hi, I've recently getting back into reading this year but every fiction book I've read has fallen a little flat for me. I've read The Midnight Library, The Silent Patient, and Yellowface, and none of them really hit the mark for me.

I love and miss the feeling of not being able to put a book down. What's a book you'd recommend that made you feel that way?

(For some context into my preferences, my favorite books are The Book Thief and Song of Achilles. I love a tragedy but I also love a good romance and/or coming of age novel. I find the classics a bit daunting but I am definitely not opposed to them!)

Suggest me some really well-done hard sci-fi

Hey friends! Looking for books for my father-in-law to read while he's in the hospital. I'm a big reader, but we have very different taste, so I could use some help!

He's an incredibly smart former research neuroscientist and field orinthologist who loves sci-fi. He loved The Martian, Project Hail Mary, The Three Body Problem, and Saturn Run. Any ideas?

Any audiobooks told from the perspective of an AI?

I recently started the bobiverse series and I'm already a fan of murderbot, and I'm loving the show so far

I'm curious to see what else is in this vein, I really enjoy the ability of these characters to exist in a wholly unique sensory mode, handling multiple inputs, having unconventional means of manipulating and interacting with the world, etc while still being recognizable as human

One thing I really liked about the early bobiverse book was the expansion of abilities, he didn't start with full functionality but expanded over time.

And in murderbot I deeply enjoyed murderbot's desire to absolutely not be human, despite not knowing exactly what it wants, so I'd like that theme explored instead of the AI being pinnochio wanting to be a real boy

Something cool would be following the AI evolve from activation as a chatbot to benevolent machine god or something

What you are looking for is the library

What You Are Looking For Is in the Library
Book by Michiko Aoyama is the book for every adult who feels they are stuck in a loop would like to change their life.
It's a literary fiction, it's a breath of fresh air you would feel so calm reading it.

My backstory,I am a tired 26 year old adult who is yet to complete her education,I am a Student clinical psychology student and I have recently started thinking was 8 years of my education even worth it as everyone around my age is working all settled, getting married, having kids and here I am who has invested so much time in something - I am starting to think I don't like it as much.

Then I read this book, I suddenly don't feel that hopeless. I feel yeah! I can do it,it will all be fine.
And not because it was a self help book about how can you live your life better,it was just a very common knowledge thingy yet said it in the most beautiful narration and characters.
I don't know what else to say without giving away the story itself.

Books about solitary women

I’m looking for fiction or non-fiction about women living life alone—either adventure-stye, in nature, or in more mundane settings.

David Markson’s Wittgenstein’s Mistress and Gretel Ehrlich’s The Solace of Open Spaces are a couple past favorites.

Preferably written by women and without a heavy emphasis on self-discovery (like Eat Pray Love); looking more for quiet reflections and stories by about women who aren’t still in the process of redefining themselves without their male parters. (I state this specifically because I feel like most literature in this sub-genre fits this description and I’m looking for something different.)

Thanks!

I'm trying to get back into reading after a long slump, and I'd love to hear what book pulled you back in. Could be fiction, nonfiction, something comforting or totally gripping - just something that reminded you why reading is magic.

Bonus points if it made you lose track of time. I need that kind of book.

Romance/Comedy/Satire or Simple Light-Hearted Books

Can anyone please suggest a light read? Lately I've only been reading deep, serious books and I want something light-just to take a break. It could involve a bit of romance too but not a cliched rom-com. I was thinking of reading A Man Called Ove, but is it sad/heartbreaking? In the past couple of months I have read: The Bell Jar, Eleanor Elephant is Completely Fine, The ABC Murders, The Endless Night and while I have enjoyed all of them, I now want something light and funny,

Can someone recommend me a book with a similar vibe to Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong bookshop or A Psalm for the Wild-built?

I’ve recently read both of these and really loved the vibes, they’re calm and there are life lessons woven into the stories. They both kind of give “slice of life” (even though a psalm for the wild-built is based in a made up world). I just realized both books really felt calming and I loved it! I’m reading the sequel to psalm for the wild-built right now. Any other books I should try?

Look at your bookshelf. What is one book that you have NEVER seen mentioned on here, but you think is pretty darn good.

It doesn't have to be the perfect book, or a book you even though much about much after you finished it, it just has to be one that hasn't been mentioned here and deserves a mention.

Books with women who kick ass that aren't fantasy?

I find it depressing that whenever there's a book list of tough, fighting women, it's usually 100% fantasy novels. Like the idea of women being strong and great fighters is so preposterous, that we have to create another world or give her magical powers (that inevitably make her faint) for it to be believable. Have any authors ever seen the Olympics? UFC? Women fight.

I've been trying to put together a list of books with regular ol' human women who are tough as nails, put fist to face, and ideally have no romance or romance as just a subplot. Books akin to every action/adventure novel ever written, but with a female lead. This is what I have so far:

The Red Sparrow series

Whiskey When We're Dry

The Fair Fight

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series

Can you please help me add to it?

Looking for a dystopian future novel that focuses on relationships

I've recently been on a dystopian/post apocalyptic/gentle sci fi kick and looking for more! Some of my recent favourites include the MaddAddam trilogy, Station Eleven, and I Who Have Never Known Men.

I'm looking for books that focus more on relationships than battle tactics. I liked the Silo trilogy quite a bit, but my eyes started to glaze over when descriptions of uprisings began.

So yeah, gentle, preferably female-led dystopia. Got anything like that?

Looking for books with morally questionable narrators who try to justify their actions

I really liked The Secret History, Notes on a Scandal, and Yellowface. I enjoy books where the main character or narrator is clearly in the wrong, but still tries to explain or justify what they did.

I like seeing how they think and why they made those choices, even if they’re lying to themselves (or to us). I find it interesting when the character thinks they’re right, even though the reader can tell they’re not. what are some other books like this?

i’m deeply ashamed to admit this, but i haven’t read a book in years

i’ve decided i’m going to post and keep it 100% transparent.

because i want… i crave, that feeling i once felt.

the last time i was deeply invested in a book was in high school, when i quickly tore through the twilight saga.

i couldn’t get enough. and i didn’t even really read back then either?!

i’ve picked up several books since, hoping to fall back in love with reading. but i have add, and my life is… well, never boring.

i’m open to anything, truly. the only thing i’m looking for is to feel something. and that can be heartbreak, but what i’m really hoping for is that “life is beautiful” feeling, not the one that makes you appreciate life, but the one that plants hope in the soul. there’s a difference, at least to me. i hope i explained it well enough.

thank you for reading, taking the time to comment, and for not judging me.
