A slow burn romance book with very little to no spice?
I have such a hard time finding good romance books. I can’t stand the instalove tropes and relationships that don’t make sense so I’m looking for more slow burn, NA, contemporary romance books. They can also be dystopian or in a different timeline. Just pleaseeee suggest anything with a good, slow love story. Thank you all!

Eldest daughter anything tbh. Complex relationships and all of the above.
The only one on my list is Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I was going to read Chinese parents don’t say I love you but didn’t see great reviews for it.

Looking for a book where the MC is born in captivity and doesn't know anything about the outside world?
I know this is oddly specific! I am currently reading a recently popular book (to avoid spoilers, I'll put the name of the book down at the bottom). In this book, the MC is in a land of infinite rooms, with only one other person, and he starts learning more and more about the outside world as the story progresses.
The book I'm reading has fantasy/magical realism elements which aren't my favorite. But it's making me really want a book set in reality, where the MC is very naive to the way the outside world works, because all (s)he knows is her life in captivity. It doesn't matter to me if they know they are in captivity or not.
***Spoiler***
The book I'm reading now is Piranesi. A lot of people say to go into it completely blind, which is why I'm trying to be careful not to spoil it. I'm not too far into it so my description might change as i get deeper into it!

i’ve spent the last spring semester and the current accelerated summer semester drowning in technical readings - now i’d love something fun!
my favorite romance authors who write a mean “trashy beach read” with plot are:
rosie danan
evie dunmore
authors that i don’t click with are:
tessa bailey
colleen hoover
hannah grace
emily henry
i’d appreciate any suggestions!!

What book has motivated you to make the most positive changes to your life? Fiction and non-fiction suggestions welcome.
I’ve always found self-help or motivational books to be kind of cliche or only helpful in the short-term. I’ve read some Tony Robbins, 7 Habits, Atomic Habits, etc… But I’ve actually gained a lot more from fiction books like Les Miserables and The Godfather.
Has anything actually had a positive impact on your life long-term?

Authors with dry wit/humor
Lately I've really been enjoying the work of Kurt Vonnegut, Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. I'm currently reading White Noise by Don Delillo and I think what I like that all these authors have in common is that they use humor or satire in a really sarcastic way. Can anyone suggest more authors/specific books with a similar style?

Going to be in hospital and need something engaging but not too cognitively demanding
I’ve just been admitted to hospital, and the next few weeks in particular will be especially distressing. I have a pretty long reading list, and don’t know where to start. Couldn’t begin to tell you what mood I feel like - I guess I don’t mind the idea of something that gets the mind going despite how tired I am, but ideally something easy to get lost in. I’m typically a classics, contemporary or speculative or historical fiction person, but am really open minded genre wise. Think Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens, Hamnet, Shuggie Bain.
I’m typically not a fantasy reader other than my annual guilty Harry Potter read, and would perhaps love to explore some classic mystery or thrillers?
I tend to veer heavy but wouldn’t mind something more propulsive and escapist.
Really, just tell me what you’d go for, or what someone who really had just trying to read as much as they can despite it being more effortful than usual, had lots of time should read!
Edit: don’t do straight up scary/horror

books with unforgettable main characters like holden caulfield?
I’m looking for novels where the main character really sticks with you someone with a unique voice, lots of personality, maybe a bit flawed but totally relatable. Holden caulfield from the catcher in the rye is a perfect example.
What are some books you’d recommend with characters that stay in your head long after you finish reading? I’m open to any genre. Thanks!

Suggest me a book!
Sorry this may come off as a misogynist asshole, but I’m trying to be less of one! I just started getting into reading as an adult last year. Thus far I have enjoyed historical fiction the most. A friend asked me if I have read anything from a women or queer perspective, and my answer was no. And I was watching Before Midnight and I had never heard or been inspired to think so much before about being a women and motherhood. And it made me want to try to change, or learn more. So what would be a good book that could tackle this little area of trying to broaden my horizons. I think I’d like some from both queer and womens perspective. And I think I’d prefer more fiction or like fiction based on truth? Don’t know if I’d be interested in a memoir. Thank you!!

Books about/set in Appalachia
Hey everyone!
As the title suggests I’m looking for books about it set in Appalachia. Ideally, I prefer fiction books set in Appalachia but non fiction is also very welcome!
I recently read demon copperhead and knowing about the unique lived experiences of people living within the Appalachian mountains was really intriguing to read and I want more of it.
I would also especially love reading about the experiences of BIPOC there.
Thank you! :)

NEED that gender ideology. Left Hand of Darkness, Imperial Radch, Lilith's Brood, some of the characters in Vorkosigan Saga and A Voyage to Arcturus. These are all I know! Please suggest/list all scifi (or fantasy) books that you know with atypical gender/sexuality. I need to build my collection.

Young kids book recommendations?
My 6 year old is an avid reader. She loves the magic tree house series and Anne of Green Gables (though I read that one to her), Bluey, Princess 5 minute Stories, Star Wars 5 minute stories, etc.
We recently tried both the Ivy and Bean series and the Junie B. Jones series and she didn’t like either of them. She told me the children did bad things and she didn’t like it and we needed to send them back haha. The two chapters I made it through of Ivy and Bean had me agreeing with her! I’m struggling to find stories that are fun and engaging without awful behavior.
Any suggestions??

Books that "found you"?
Going through a small slump right now and just wondering which books you stumbled upon and found to be exactly what you needed. I'm having a hard time with fiction atm, but wouldn't mind just about anything- mystery, Sci, fi, fantasy, or (preferably) historical non fiction with large sweeping narratives. What was that perfect rec at that perfect time for you? Also anyone ever notice how hard it is to take recommended books from people irl. I have to feel like it was almost accidental(*?) To get the full feeling.
Recent books I've enjoyed were "shadow divers" by Robert kurson- awesome diving non fiction about a crew of divers who find something wild deep und3r the ocean and have to investigate. There's a ton here about sailing and diving to learn and does a good job with pace.
"The horse: a galloping history of humanity" by Timothy winegard was a necessity after reading "empire of the summer moon" by s.c gwynne about settling the american west. Did you know Horses evolved in north america, left/ died out here, only to return with the Spanish and become one of the greatest tools of resistance by the commanche? So cool... a people acclimated to the arid plains reunites with the perfect creature to withstand white encroachment for almost 200 years.
Matterhorn, all quiet on the western front and kill anything that moves are all 5/5s for me as well
I've done a lot of popular fantasy stuff like Brando sando and rothfuss. I enjoyed enders game...
I couldn't stand project hail Mary or tender is the flesh. Any ideas? Haha thanks.

Seeking a short but good book to get out of reading slump
I`ve been in a reading slump for months now, and I really want to get out of it. Figured a short and good book would hopefully do the job 🙏
In terms of what I enjoy. Some of my favourite books are "And every morning the way home gets longer and longer" - Fredrik Bachman, "Chess" - Stefan Zweig, "Wuthering Heights" - Emily Bronte and "Kim Jiyoung born 1982" - Cho Namjoo.

An audiobook I can listen to while my daughter screams and fights sleep?
My 3 month old is in her fighting sleep at all costs phase and I can only listen to so much screaming while rocking her to sleep before I go insane. I'd love something light-hearted and easy to follow if I'm not giving it 100% of my attention. I love classics, but I'm open to pretty much anything as long as it's not super dark, and I really don't like any spice in my books. Thanks in advance🩷

suggest me books that ground you
suggest me books that quietly change the way you see life. not necessarily self-help, just the kind that makes you pause, reflect, and feel something real. i’m turning 22 and lately i’ve been feeling a little lost, like life is moving too fast and i’m stuck in place. there’s so much i want to do, so much i want to become. i know i’m still young, but sometimes it feels like i’m already running out of time

If you had to read only one genre for the rest of your life, which one would it? Why?
I think most of us prefer some genres and usually read more in a particular area. However, for people who like to dabble in books in general without any confinement to the genre, what's your one favorite genre that you always keep coming back to? Something you can't give up reading?
For me this is usually thriller. I can't stay away and end up reading a fast-paced thriller between self help, horror or anything else in my TBR.
I'd love to know your favourite genre. Throw in some recommendations and author names too please!

I’m looking for good books that can help shape a man’s character things like mindset, attitude, discipline, confidence, emotional control, and overall how to become a better version of myself.

Please suggest fantasy books with a cozy, funny or positive vibe
I can't handle grim or violent books right now. Reality is bad enough. Please recommend fantasy or sci/fi titles that are cozy, uplifting, or funny. Clean-ish romance subplots (straight or queer) are fine although not required. Thank you!
